“What do you mean you won’t be back tomorrow?” Jounouchi Katsuya screamed at his lover through the telephone while bits of the sandwich he had just taken a bite of hit the receiver. He had been eating his lunch in the kitchen of the Kaiba mansion when the phone rang. “The deal was supposed to be done by now and you’re supposed to be in the air in a few hours.”
“I’m sorry Katsuya, but it can’t be helped. Mr. Sullivan was called away at the last minute by a family emergency, or so he says. He’s going to be out of town for at least three days, if not longer. I honestly don’t know when I’ll make it back” Kaiba Seto tried to reason with his enraged boyfriend. He could tell by Jou’s initial reaction that this could easily degenerate into one of their rare, but ultimately bitter fights. Or rare since they had become a couple at any rate.
“Can’t you just have your lawyers negotiate with his?”
“No, he’s insisting on dealing with me personally or he won’t sell” Seto was unable to hide the annoyance he felt at the whole situation. “The negotiations weren’t going well when he was here, I don’t know that I would have been able to get away tonight anyway.” He had been working on a deal to buy a huge parcel of land to build a Kaiba Land on the outskirts of San Francisco. He had flown in the night before to be present for the completion of the purchase that was supposed to happen earlier that day. Mr. Sullivan was the final owner to sign his contract but at the last minute refused, and was now holding out for more money. The land he owned was crucial to the development of the amusement park and within reason Seto was willing to pay whatever the man wanted without much compromise. He wished that Mr. Sullivan would name his price so this transaction could be completed instead of playing this game to feed his fragile ego.
“Can’t you come home for a few days then return when Mr. What’s his name comes back,” Jou pleaded with his boyfriend, trying desperately to control the anger that threatened to turn this into a full-fledged fight. He really didn’t want to argue across the Pacific Ocean on the telephone, as he preferred his fights to be up close and personal.
“It’s just not worth all the time that I would spend in the air to be home for at most a day and a half and then fly back to San Francisco, I’d be exhausted.”
Jounouchi caught his breath and stifled the angered hurt feelings that scorched his heart. He thought he meant more to the bastard billionaire than a small bout of exhaustion, he thought wrong. The very small part of his brain that could think logically at the moment tried to reason that he was being irrational and that Seto was completely right. But being a passionate person who let his emotions rule his thoughts, that logic was run over roughshod. He tried one more time to put forth what he thought was a reasonable argument “well you can sleep on the plane both ways”.
“You know I don’t sleep well on planes, plus there’s the factor of jet lag. I wouldn’t be good company and you know it” Seto said unable to hide his irritation at what he felt was his boyfriend’s complete lack understanding and sympathy for his situation.
“Fine Seto, do whatever you have to do and I’ll see you when you get back. When will that be by the way?”
“Thursday at the earliest, more likely Saturday.”
“So a week? I won’t see you for a whole week, that’s just great Kaiba” Jounouchi didn’t try to hide his disappointment.
On the other side of the Pacific Ocean Kaiba Seto was as confused as he was angered by Jou’s reaction. He wasn’t quite sure why his boyfriend was taking this so personally. It wasn’t often since they had been together that he let his work take precedence, but this project was too close to his heart to jeopardize it and Jou knew it.
In a sudden flash of brilliance the perfect solution popped into his head and he spoke, “Jou pup, why don’t /click/ you come here” he finished into the dead line.
Seto stared at the phone in his hands “he hung up” he said rather stupidly to the empty room. He immediately started to redial and then changed his mind. From experience he knew that Jou would let the phone ring until someone else in the house answered or the machine picked up. Besides, he really didn’t want to talk to the puppy at the moment either. He was not ruining any important plans by staying here another week. And did Jou think that he enjoyed being forced to stay alone in a foreign country for a whole week by himself because of the insecurity and greed of one man? The more he thought about it, the more convinced he became that Jou was being completely unreasonable. After all he was the one who was all alone whereas his boyfriend had his summer job and friends to keep him busy.
He stood at the window of his hotel room and stared blankly at the thousands of lights that illuminated the city below him. Seto knew that his lover would need at least an hour before he would be calm enough to talk to again. He tried to convince himself without any real success that Jou was just overreacting because of his disappointment. That baffled him, and until they spoke again he wouldn’t know what had upset the blond. He knew it had to be more than just not being able to be back the next day, Jou could be a hothead but he wasn’t usually this irrational. He knew now that he should have thought out the situation before he called home, but he had been expecting a sympathetic ear not a fight. If only he had mentioned the idea of Jou coming over right at the beginning of the phone call, this would never have happened. Instead they were thousands of miles away from each other and he was at the receiving end of a bout of silent treatment. Because Jou had gone quiet and didn’t continue to scream at him, Seto knew that his lover had to be hurt badly, but why? He turned away from the window and in typical fashion chose to ignore his warring emotions of anger at and concern for the blond. He sat down at the desk to go over the proposals that he had made to Mr. Sullivan.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
After Jou hung up on Seto, he paced around the kitchen of the Kaiba mansion as he tried to get a grip on his emotions and not throw something at the wall. As he paced he kept hearing Seto’s voice in his head saying it wasn’t worth the effort to fly back home, meaning he wasn’t worth the effort. That to commemorate the year they spent together wasn’t worth a little jet lag. That thought was too much for Jou to accept and he screamed “you bastard” as he picked up his plate from the table and hurled it away from him. It sailed through the air and narrowly missed Mokuba’s head as it breezed past when he entered the room and smashed on the floor behind him.
“Jou” the younger Kaiba looked at his brother’s lover with a startled look on his face. “What’s wrong?”
“He won’t be back tomorrow” he felt as if Kaiba had taken his heart in his long bony fingers and was squeezing the love out of it.
“Oh Jou” Mokuba’s voice was full of pained sympathy for the man in front of him. “It must be terribly important, or else I’m sure he wouldn’t miss your anniversary.”
“I wouldn’t be too sure about that Mokuba, I don’t think he even remembers that it’s tomorrow.”
“I’m sure that’s not true Jou, he would never be that thoughtless” he tried vainly to reassure his brother’s lover.
“You don’t think so, well did he say anything to you before he left? Did he divulge any plans, ask you for any ideas on how to celebrate because he sure didn’t say anything to me.”
As much as he hated to admit it, Mokuba had to answer truthfully and tell his much-loved friend that no, his brother had not mentioned anything about his upcoming anniversary.
“I knew it, I should have known when he was acting baffled about why I was so adamant that he be back on the 26th. I thought it was an act, but it wasn’t was it. He was confused because he didn’t remember, he doesn’t care.” The arm that shot out to sweep the table clear of the rest of its contents was quickly retracted when he encountered a withering glare from Mokuba. Instead he stalked out of the kitchen and headed for the stairs that led to the room he shared with Seto.
“Where are you going” Mokuba asked in a panic.
“To pack.”
“You can’t leave Jou, you have to stay here with me until Seto comes back” he said with tears choking his breath.
“I’m just moving my stuff to another room, I’ll move it back to my apartment when your brother comes home. Don’t you dare call him either, if he can’t remember on his own he certainly doesn’t deserve a reminder,” he said over his shoulder to the boy who was following him up the stairs.
“I won’t Jou” Mokuba had a sheepish look on his face that belied his intentions of doing just that.
“I mean it Mokuba, don’t call him” and as an afterthought he added “or email, text message, send smoke signals or any other way you can think of to contact him.” Jou turned away from the boy and entered the room that he shared with Seto.
“Hmph you’re as stubborn as my brother” Mokuba said loud enough for Jou to hear then stomped off to his own bedroom.
Though Jounouchi still shared an apartment with Honda close to Domino University where they were both students, it was a rare night that he actually slept there. In the last six months he could barely remember spending one night there and definitely never two consecutive ones. He hadn’t officially moved into the Kaiba mansion but he was there most of the time. Seto took for granted that he would always be there in the evening and that he would stay the night.
Slowly over time most of his clothes had ended up at the house. He even had his own drawer in the bathroom for all of his toiletries. It wasn’t something he had asked for or that Seto had made a big deal of at the time. He had come back from classes one day and Seto had simply mentioned in passing that he had cleared a drawer for him in the vanity in his bathroom. When he checked it out later he had expected to find an empty drawer that he would fill with his own things, instead the drawer was already complete with his favorite brands of shaving products, deodorant, and cologne. As he emptied that drawer into a box he remembered how giddy and excited he felt at the discovery, it said without words that Seto wanted him to be around for a while. He felt the polar opposite now, he was sad and heartbroken with the discovery that his boyfriend didn’t care enough to even try to spend their anniversary together. He picked up the box, walked out of the bathroom and gathered up the last of his things from Seto’s room and headed to the guest bedroom he had chosen to be his last place of slumber in the Kaiba mansion.
As he was hanging his clothes up in the closet, Mokuba came in lugging a suitcase and carry-on bag. “Get packing Jou, we don’t have much time,” he said as he dumped the luggage on the bed.
“Whoa Mokuba, did you change your mind? Are you kicking me out now?
“No I’m not kicking you out, but since you wouldn’t let me call my brother you are going to San Francisco.”
“Ah, no I’m not.”
“Yes you are Jou. I managed to get you on a flight that leaves at five, but you have to be at the airport two hours beforehand so you have to be packed and ready to go in about twenty minutes. You do have your passport with you, don’t you?”
He did have it, but he thought about lying to Mokuba. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to break things off with Seto but he knew he didn’t want to fly halfway around the world to be with him either. At the moment he hurt more than he ever knew was possible. He didn’t even realize how much their anniversary meant to him until Seto had forgotten all about it. When he had been thinking about what to do to celebrate, his ideas weren’t big. He hadn’t bought a present for Seto (what could he get a man who could buy whatever he wanted) and he didn’t expect one in return, Jou just wanted to lavish his lover with his undivided attention and he had wanted the same treatment in return. His wish was for the two of them to put everything else aside for just one day and be together. That wasn’t going to happen now though because his lover was on the other side of the world without a clue that there was anything special about the 26th. If the bastard had said anything to indicate that he was sorry about not being able to celebrate with him, Jou knew he wouldn’t be in such pain now. He needed the acknowledgement that the year just passed was as special to Seto as it was to him. Obviously it wasn’t. With that in mind he answered Mokuba sounding more broken hearted than he had before, “yeah I have it, but it doesn’t matter because I’m not going”.
“I didn’t want to say anything earlier Jou, but you’re right he probably did forget, in fact he may not even know that your anniversary is coming up. But…”
This was too much for Jou to bear and he cut Mokuba off before he could say anything else, “and you want me to fly to San Francisco so I can see in person that he doesn’t care about us.”
“No Jou, that’s not it. I know he loves you as much as you do him, please give him a chance,” Mokuba pleaded. “It’s just that when it comes to birthdays and I assume anniversaries his mind is a sieve. He never remembers my birthday on his own. Well he does but then forgets again in the next minute. He needs a reminder to pop up on his computer twice a day for the week preceding it or he would completely forget it. Half the time I don’t think he even remembers his own.”
“You expect me to believe that someone as brilliant as he is can’t even remember his own brother’s birthday, especially the way he dotes on you” Jou’s tone conveyed his obvious disbelief.
“Yes, because it’s true. It’s not very surprising that he forgot since this project has been nothing but trouble right from the beginning and has had him totally preoccupied, please understand Jou.”
“So tell me Mokuba, if this deal wasn’t consuming him would he have remembered our anniversary?”
“I hate to say this Jou, but probably not on his own.” At the look of anguish on his brother’s lover’s face he hastened to add, “please just go to San Francisco and you’ll see. He’ll make sure that he never forgets it again, check the planner on his computer the day after you arrive and I’ll bet he already has the reminders in place for next year.”
Jou considered Mokuba’s words; he was in love with Seto and wasn’t too keen to end their relationship despite how his heart ached at the moment. He desperately wanted to believe that this was a personality flaw that couldn’t be helped and not an indication of how Seto regarded their relationship, but still he hesitated. “I don’t know Mokuba.”
“Jou, did you mention anything to him about your anniversary before he left?”
The blond had to admit that he hadn’t.
“I didn’t know about it until after he was gone, otherwise I would have reminded him. And the way you were talking, I just assumed that the two of you had discussed it and had made plans. Please Jou, just go and give him a chance,” the younger Kaiba implored.
“He should have remembered on his own” his anger was abating rapidly but he was still reluctant to let Seto off the hook.
“You’re right Jou he should have, but he never does. It’s something I’ve learned to live with and you’ll have to compensate for as well. Please say you’ll go.”
“I don’t see why I have to go there, he should come to me.”
“Now you’re just being stubborn, you can go there and stay with him until he is able to come back. If he flies here, he’ll only be able to stay for a day before he has to return to San Francisco.”
“What time does the plane leave?” Jou sighed in resignation knowing that Mokuba was right and that he wouldn’t give up until he agreed.
“You have to be at Narita Airport by 3:00 p.m. which means we should be on the road now.” Interpreting this as the blond’s acquiescence Mokuba picked up the box with Jou’s toiletries in it and dumped the whole thing in the overnight bag. Jou grabbed a few shirts, socks and underwear and tossed them at Mokuba who threw them into the case with his shaving gear, leaving the suitcase empty. Jou then ran out the door with the other trailing behind him carrying the overnight bag.
-------------------------------------------------------------
In San Francisco Seto was futilely attempting to accomplish some work, but his mind kept drifting back to the argument he had with Jou. An hour had passed and he was still completely clueless about why his lover was so worked up about him not being back the next day. His reaction had been more than disappointment and Seto had the distinct impression that Jou was insulted and hurt that he wouldn’t be home tomorrow. What was so important that Jou wanted him back then? Seto had this niggling unsettling feeling that he was missing something of extreme importance. Whatever it was was hovering just out of reach of his conscious mind, teasing him with its presence. He went down a list of things in his mind that could be it. There were no important events they were to attend, Mokuba’s birthday had just passed, and he knew they had celebrated Jou’s this year as well, so that wasn’t it. What was it, what was so important about July (he looked at his calendar to see what the date was tomorrow) 25, no wait in Japan it was already the 25th. The day Jou was concerned about was July 26th. As soon as he said July 26th in his head, what he had been unable to grasp came crashing down on him with all the force of a tsunami.
Their anniversary! One year ago tomorrow the pup had gathered up all his courage and asked him out on a date. Seto could remember it like it was yesterday, but now was not the time to reminisce; he had to fix his blunder immediately. He picked up the phone and began to dial home, then changed his mind and called his pilot instead. The phone was answered on the third ring and Seto didn’t wait until the man said hello before he started barking out orders. He wanted the plane ready to go as soon as possible and he would be at the airfield within the hour.
“Of course Kaiba sama. Everything is ready to go and I haven’t cancelled the flight plans yet so as soon as you get to the airport we can leave.” The pilot had slept through the day in preparation of leaving for Domino at 10:00 pm. The plane was at a private airfield an hour outside of San Francisco, which meant that if Seto left the hotel immediately they could stick to their original plans.
“You’ve taken care of all customs documents?”
“Yes sir, everything is ready to go.”
“Good, I’ll be there shortly.” Seto disconnected without saying goodbye and then immediately called home. At the other end the phone rang incessantly until the answering machine picked up. ‘He can’t still be mad can he?’ Seto thought to himself, and then recalled the reason why Jou was angry with him in the first place. ‘Oh yes he can be. Face it Seto, you’re dog meat until you make it up to him in person.’
He left a message stating that he was sorry about missing their anniversary and that he would make it up to Jou sooner than he would guess. Seto knew that his only real hope to smooth things over would be to have his brother act as mediator on his behalf. If anyone could convince Jou that this was part of his socially retarded personality and not a reflection of his feelings for his lover, it was his brother. He called his brother’s cel and was not surprised that it wasn’t turned on. He wondered why he bothered with a phone for Mokuba when he could never get through to it. He didn’t leave a message as he assumed the one he left at home would suffice, besides he would be back in Domino before his brother ever thought to turn on his phone.
He then phoned down to the concierge to request a limo and to inform them that he would be gone for a few days and to take any messages for him. When asked if he wanted to leave a forwarding number where he could be reached Seto declined. He would be home soon enough and if Mr. Sullivan tried to get in touch with him before the three days were up, he could wait. As he had been unable to contact anyone at the house he thought it might be nice to surprise Jou. The message he had left at home was cryptic enough to hide the fact that he was on his way back to Domino. When he was finished he grabbed one of his key cards and wallet from the desk in front of him and headed for the hotel’s lobby.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Jounouchi and Mokuba were almost to Tokyo when the thought suddenly occurred to Jou that they should probably call Seto. He hadn’t thought of it earlier because they had been in panic mode in the rush to get out the door.
“No don’t” Mokuba laid his hand over Jou’s as he reached for the limo’s telephone.
“Mokuba I’m not going to start another fight with him, I just want to let him know that I’m coming over.”
“Don’t you think it would be more romantic if you just showed up on his doorstep?”
“Um, no. I want him to meet me at the airport.” Jou’s English was not very good and he did not cherish the idea of trying to navigate his way to Seto’s hotel by himself.
Mokuba released Jou’s hand and let him make his call. The blond bypassed the front desk by punching in the extension for Seto’s room and therefore he did not receive the message that his lover was gone. After seven rings Jou hung up and looked at Mokuba. “There’s no answer he must have gone out for a bit.” That thought angered him slightly but he was determined not to dwell on it. After all he was the one who hung up on Seto, not the other way around. If he needed to get out of his hotel room to cool off who was Jou to blame him for that. He knew the real reason for his unsettled feelings was that he didn’t want to head off to the United States without the assurance that his boyfriend would be there to meet him. They were pulling into Narita airport and Jou would not have another opportunity to call Seto from the car.
“I’m going to try to call him again once I get settled, but Mokuba promise me you’ll phone him as well.”
“I will” he assured the blond.
“Thanks, and you’re staying with Yugi until I or we get back right?”
“Yes Jou, I already told you that.”
“I know, but your brother will want guarantees that you’re well taken care of. He’ll kick my ass across the Pacific Ocean if he thinks for one second that I’ve neglected you.”
“Yeah and he’ll kick mine if he thinks that I sent you helpless half way around the world. Here’s some money, you can exchange it for US currency in the airport” Mokuba said as he pressed a stack of bills into Jou’s hand.
“Mokuba I have my own money, I don’t need yours” he pushed the money back to his companion.
“Yeah I know, but you might not have time to get to a bank machine.”
He gave his boyfriend’s brother a look that said don’t be an idiot, “if I have time to get currency exchanged, I have time to go to a bank machine”.
“Jou don’t argue, just take it and consider it to be an anniversary present.”
“That’s what the plane ticket is.”
“Actually I put that on Seto’s credit card, so just take it ok” he said with a sly grin. “Besides you need to save your money for school since the only help you’ll accept from my brother is a job.”
“Oh shit work, I completely forgot about that.”
“Don’t worry about it Jou, you’ve got an in with the boss. I’ll make your excuses to your supervisor, OK.”
“OK, and thanks a lot Mokuba” he put the money in his wallet, gave the boy a quick hug and then got out of the limo with the carry-on bag. He stood at the curb until the limo was gone and then entered the airport.
