Chapter 1

Seto Kaiba stirred. Slowly his eyes opened. It took him a moment to realise that something was wrong. Very wrong.
It was so dark, he couldn't see a thing. He blinked, but the darkness did not go away. He frowned, but that didn't help either. "What in the world...? Where am I?" He tried to move and the top of his head hit something. Kaiba froze. He slowly, carefully, reached up his hand to feel above him. His frown deepened as his hand moved, exploring the area around him as he tried to work out where he was. The results of his exploration did not please him at all. He glared into the darkness as he took stock of the situation.
He was sitting curled up in a small space about four feet square. His searching fingers had discovered a row of reasonably-sized holes around the top of the enclosing walls, so he knew air would not be a problem, but that seemed to be the only bright side to his predicament. He was trapped who knew where, for who knew how long, with nothing to eat or drink. The previous night's dinner suddenly seemed a very long time ago.
Sighing, Kaiba decided to make the best of things. For now, there was nothing he could do except wait and hope that someone would come to let him out of wherever he was. In the meantime, he needed to distract his mind with something.
Closing his eyes again, since he found it rather unnerving to have his eyes open but still be unable to see anything in the total darkness, Kaiba began to go back over the events leading up to that moment.

It all started with the snowstorm.
Of course, it wasn't any ordinary snowstorm. When it snowed in Domino City, it didn't just come down in a gentle fall of wafting snowflakes that you could take a pleasant walk in. Oh no. The snow came down in a raging torrent, accompanied by howling galeforce winds.
As if the snow wasn't enough of a problem for Kaiba, who was forced to work from his home office since the snow was too deep for him to get to Kaiba Corp., he received a call from Yami mid-morning.
"Kaiba. Do not allow Mokuba to go outside in these winds."
Kaiba arched an eyebrow and bit back his immediate reaction, which was to tell Yami off for giving him orders. Something in the tone of the ex-Pharoah's voice made it clear that this was no idle call made purely to annoy him. "Why not?"
Yami sighed. "Because he is smaller than my light and Yugi just tried to take the trash outside and ended up blown off his feet. Fortunately, he was able to catch hold of the lightpost as he flew by it, otherwise there is no telling where he might have ended up."
Kaiba somehow managed to restrain from snickering. "I see. I shall keep that in mind." That was no lie. He doubted if the mental image conjured by Yami's words would leave him for the rest of the day, at least.
He was still smirking to himself a few minutes later, as he entered Mokuba's room.
His younger brother was exactly where Kaiba had expected him to be; lying on the floor in front of his television, playing a video game. Kaiba positioned himself where the boy could see him and waited patiently. Although for the most part, he and Mokuba had very different personalities, they shared a dislike of being interrupted when they were focused on something. They also could not stand to have someone in the room waiting for them while they were trying to concentrate. Sure enough, within a few moments, Mokuba hit pause and looked up. "Is something wrong, Seto?"
Kaiba smiled a little and shook his head. "No. I received a telephone call from Yami. Apparently the wind is currently strong enough to blow Yugi off his feet. You are not planning on going outside today, are you?"
Mokuba grinned and shook his head. "Don't worry, big brother, I have everything I need right here." He held up the game controller as he spoke.
"Good." Kaiba turned to go but Mokuba's voice made him turn back.
"Seto..."
Kaiba arched an eyebrow, making a note that it was Mokuba's 'try and get big brother to do something I want which he won't want to do' voice. He was instantly wary. "Yes?"
"You and Yami seem to be getting along a lot better now. Why don't we invite them and the others around here for... Oh, I don't know... Maybe a... Christmas party?" Mokuba looked up at his brother hopefully. "You're always telling me that I need to socialise more."
It had always been a mystery to Kaiba how Mokuba was able to make his eyes go almost twice their usual size, on demand. It was also a mystery to him how the sight of his younger brother looking up at him out of those big eyes always made it almost impossible for him to say 'no' to whatever Mokuba was asking of him. This time was no exception.
"That is not exactly what I had in mind." Kaiba turned away, trying to minimise the damage done. If he wasn't looking at his younger brother, then Mokuba's eyes wouldn't influence him. Theoretically. In practice, Kaiba realised that he could still feel the boy's gaze upon him.
"What makes you think I want any of them in our home?" There was no heat in Kaiba's tone. He was already defeated and both of them knew it. But that didn't mean he was going to just give in without a fight.
Mokuba smiled a little. "Because it's Christmas, Seto. Remember when we were little, that Christmas we spent together at the orphanage? You told me then that Christmas isn't about toys, or trees, or lights, or decorations. It's about friends and family, and being with the ones you love. We're family, and they're friends. We should all celebrate Christmas together. At least for a few hours. Right?"
Kaiba didn't know what stunned him more, that Mokuba remembered what he had said so clearly, even though it had happened so many years earlier, or that he could still remember saying it... and why.
He turned around again, meeting Mokuba's wide eyes without fear as he smiled. "All right, Mokuba. We will have a Christmas party. My secretary shall start making the arrangements tomorrow." The moment he said it, he knew he'd said something wrong.
Mokuba frowned up at his big brother as he moved into a sitting position and folded his arms across his chest. "Seto! You can't just ask your secretary to plan everything! It's a *Christmas* party! It needs to be done personally or else it will be just like one of your business parties." The boy grimaced in disgust at the thought.
Kaiba winced at the thought of all the hours that were going to be sucked out of his busy schedule if he allowed Mokuba to have his way on this. He could see it all now. Mokuba dragging him off to shop for party things. Mokuba directing him as he put up the decorations. Mokuba telling him that the decorations weren't right and having him re-hang them all another way. Mokuba hugging him and smiling up at him happily at the party before he ran off to talk to his... no, their... friends. Kaiba smiled just a little. Perhaps it was worth the time out of his schedule, after all. "Very well. But I expect you to help me."
Mokuba's face lit up with a big beaming grin. "Of course I will, big brother! You don't think I'd let you have all the fun?" In a flash, the boy had his game turned off and was up, heading for his desk. "I'll start making out the guest list! There's only a couple of weeks to go before Christmas, so we'll have to have it soon."
Kaiba raised an eyebrow at his brother's sudden display of energy, but knew better than to question it. When Mokuba became enthusiastic about something, he always gave it everything he had. "In that case, I shall go back to my office and start rescheduling my appointments for the next two weeks, to allow for preparation time." Mokuba nodded in agreement, already deeply focused on his list. He didn't even seem to notice when his brother left the room.
For a few minutes, Kaiba stood outside his brother's room, his hand still resting lightly on the doorknob as if it had the power to keep him grounded in the present when his mind was turning towards the past.
He remembered the Christmas Mokuba had mentioned. He remembered saying the words Mokuba had repeated. He also remembered why he had said them.
It had been their first Christmas at the orphanage and Mokuba had been upset. He had known there wouldn't be presents, or all the wonderful decorations and music that had filled their home with such joy each Christmas, while their parents had been alive. Kaiba had wanted to reassure his little brother that everything was going to be all right.
Looking back at that moment, Kaiba realised that although he'd said it mainly to reassure Mokuba, a part of him had genuinely believed in what he was saying. The same part of him that still believed it.
All that sentiment aside though, he still couldn't believe that Mokuba had talked him into this whole party situation.
As Kaiba descended the stairs and started down the hallway towards his office, he made a mental note to himself that the next two weeks were likely to be rather busy.
He would have been more accurate if he had thought of them as being chaotic.
Not to mention... unforgettable.
