The telephone rang only twice before he picked it up, his promptness causing a slight smile to settle on the caller's face.
"What do you want, Saiyukiro?"
The abrupt non-greeting caused the dark-haired man to chuckle. "Ah, Ice, as cold as ever. Not even a word of greeting for your old friend?"
A sound, which might have been a snort if it had come from a lessor being, was followed by the expected response. "I'd hardly call you that. In fact, I wouldn't even be willing to consider you an acquaintance. So, if this is a social call, you should have spared yourself the trouble."
The dark-haired man chuckled again and leaned back into the comfortable leather of his chair. "Not merely cold but glacial, I see. No, this isn't a social call. I have a little job that needs your... expertise."
"Like I said, you should have saved yourself the trouble. In case you have forgotten, I'm retired."
The words earned the speaker a wry smile that was echoed in the dark-haired man's voice. "Oh no, I haven't forgotten. I was rather hoping I might be able to lure you out of retirement, just this one time."
"No." The voice was flat and unemotional.
The dark-haired man stopped smiling, his eyes narrowing as he spoke quickly, before his contact could hang up on him. "But you haven't even heard what bait I was going to use! And a particularly delectable morsel it is too."
"You could dangle a seven course gourmet banquet in front of me and I still wouldn't be interested." There was a hint of irritation in the voice now and the dark-haired man frowned at it.
"Oh, don't be like that, Ice. You're the best there is and it will take the best to capture The Cat." He let the name slip deliberately, his lips twisting into a cold smile as he waited for the reaction he was certain the name would get.
He knew Ice. He wasn't in the game for money or glory, or even the adrenaline rush that only a chase-and-corner could give a man. No, Ice was one of those Bounty Hunters in it purely for the challenge, and there was no greater challenge than the elusive cat burglar known only as The Cat.
"I am through with that life. Do not contact me again."
It took a second for the sound of the dial tone to register, then the late night silence of the small office was broken by a soft curse.
The dark-haired man slowly put down the phone, scowling at the machine as if it was to blame for this disruption in his plans. Fortunately, it was only a temporary setback. He already had an alternative bait in mind.
Picking up the receiver again, he dialled another number and waited impatiently for it to be answered. "Do it." As he hung up again, Takamora Saiyukiro leaned back into his chair and smiled a thin smile.
"Ice, my little goldmine. By this time next week, you'll be begging me to let you have this case."
