Summary: Ficlet for Jou’s birthday.
Jou’s having a bad day…
It had
started when he woke up, as most bad days do.
Sitting up in bed, his entire world turned upside down and the next
thing he knew he was blinking at the ceiling, back in a laying position. He tried again, more slowly, with a hand
pressed firmly to his forehead as if it would steady him. The room swam in front of his eyes but he
remained upright.
His
forehead was hot under his hand, which meant on top of that nagging cough he’d
had for two days and the strange aches that had started last night, he now had
a fever. Regardless, he dragged himself
out of bed, albeit slowly to avoid falling on his face.
After a
precarious stumble to the bathroom, cold water on his face helped somewhat with
the dizziness. Filling a Dixie
cup with water, he swallowed two pills for the headache and fever, followed by
two more for the congestion, and some syrup for the cough. “Why today?” he grunted at his reflection,
more to force his voice into working order than to really question fate’s need to screw him.
He forced
himself into his uniform and after a very small breakfast of a piece of
unbuttered toast, he went out the door.
Halfway to
school he realized the reason he felt so light was not the medicine kicking in
but that he’d forgotten his backpack, along with all his homework. He groaned and looked at his watch. If he ran he’d make it back to the house and
to school on time. Without fully
thinking that through, he turned and started.
About the
time he reached his house again he realized his mistake. He was panting harshly, with a stitch in
either side. Sweat rolled down his face
and he’d soaked through his uniform under his arms. Grabbing his backpack and a hurried glass of
water, he ran out again.
About
halfway, he’d slowed not only to a walk but nearly a crawl. A block after that, and he lost both the
glass of water and the piece of toast, along with what seemed like everything
he’d eaten in the past three weeks into the bushes of some poor woman’s
home. That added a guilty conscience to
his morning, along with an uncomfortable taste in his mouth.
By the time
he managed to get to school, use the bathroom to clean up, and go to class, he
was a full half hour late. The teacher
didn’t even pause in her lecture as she handed him a pink detention pass on his
way to his seat.
Jounouchi,
upon discovering that his homework hadn’t actually been inside his backpack,
slumped dejectedly onto his desk. He
didn’t even look up for the first hour, and the teacher must have sensed his
sick because she left him alone.
Eventually
he lifted his head long enough to look around, and then wished he hadn’t. Not only did it make him dizzy, but Yugi was
sending him concerned glances, as were Anzu and Ryou. Honda wasn’t even here, probably home with
the same bug Jounouchi had. And to ice
the cake, his entire reason for dragging his ill ass to school was for naught.
When the
lunch bell rang, Jounouchi refused to move.
The thought of food made him want to vomit again, though he was pretty
sure that there was absolutely nothing left in him to dispel.
“Jou?” Yugi asked.
“Are you alright?”
“No,”
Jounouchi grunted.
“You should
have stayed home,” Anzu started, as Ryou put a hand to Jou’s forehead.
Yugi
kneeled so his eyes were level with Jounouchi’s. “Especially today, Jou. You’ve never had a problem missing school
before. Why didn’t you stay home?”
Jounouchi sat
up a little too quickly, making the floor roll like ocean waves. He mumbled something about school and being
with friends, and hoped it was enough to please them. Movement outside the room was had caught his
eye, and perhaps there was still hope.
By last
period, however, Jounouchi had personally murdered hope. Along with fate, love, and
romance. They could all rot in
hell as far as he was concerned. He felt
completely dreadful. The smells of the
cafeteria had proven too be too much for his queasy stomach, and he’d lost
everything he’d eaten for at least the past year in the boys bathroom. Yet hope and put him back into class. Hope for some stupid romantic sign, as if
today would be any different than every other.
He’d earned
another detention by sleeping straight through history, though his math teacher
had at least been kind enough to tell him to put his head down and leave him
be. With his forehead resting on his
arms, he tried to count the lines in the wooden desk without crossing his eyes
as he did his best to block out the noise of the room.
The last
bell caused him to sigh in relief though he stayed very still. People rushed around him to leave quickly,
and he didn’t trust himself to stay standing in that crowd. Eventually the noise passed and he felt
Yugi’s hand on his shoulder. “I called
Grandpa. He’s going come
pick us up and drive you home.”
“Thanks,”
Jou grunted.
Yugi went
to pull up a chair, and Jou did his best to sit up. “I’m sorry Jou. It really sucks that you had to get sick
today of all days.”
Jounouchi
hardly heard him. A small piece of paper
sat on his desk. It had been set there
while his head was down. He opened it, and
hope was revived with very little ceremony.
“It wasn’t
so bad,” Jou said, rereading the note.
You look like shit. Happy
Birthday, Mutt.
