Summary: On an old wooden bridge in the middle of nowhere, Jou gets some life changing advice.
Rage and pain had driven him out into the night, but despair kept him walking after the initial flare passed. He didn’t pay attention to where he was walking; it didn’t matter as long as he was getting away from the one who tore his heart apart again. He didn’t understand why they couldn’t talk without fighting. In fact, it seemed that lately the only time they weren’t fighting was when they were between the sheets.
“Damn it,” he growled, swiping at the tears sliding down his face. “What the hell did I do to deserve this shit? Can’t I get a break?” He took a sobbing breath, pausing to lean against an old pole. “Damn you, Seto. Why the hell do I love you? You’ve always got to be in control, and you’ve always humiliate me, but damn it, I thought you loved me. How many fucking times do I have feel like I’m worthless? You just can’t stop rubbing it in that everything I have now, you gave me.” He lowered his head, resting his chin on his chest. He shook his head and looked up, taking in his surroundings for the first time. He blinked in surprise. He was leaning on a support pole that was holding up the roof of an old covered bridge. Curious, he walked out onto the bridge, not caring that the old wood creaked every time he took a step. He leaned against the rail on one side as he looked down at the rushing water below. He figured the river had to be at least two or three stories below the bridge. It was hard to tell in the dark.
“Are you going to jump?”
Jou felt like he’d jumped out of his skin when a young, masculine voice spoke behind him. He whirled around and blinked in surprise. Instead of a gang member or equally threatening person, a young man with a wild mop of black hair leaned against one of the supports. He was dressed in blue jeans and a white T-shirt with a leather jacket over it. A pair of battered high tops completed the picture. He looked like a local high school kid that was out a bit too late. However, Jou recognized the pain of a soul having to grow up too soon and saw himself in the younger boy, the way he had been when he’d first started high school.
“Well? Are you going to jump?”
The blond snorted. “Do you want me to?”
The black-haired boy raised an eyebrow. “That’s a stupid question. What would my opinion have to do with anything?”
Jou sighed, turning back to look down at the river. “No, I was just… I was just thinking.” He didn’t look up until the stranger leaned on the rail beside him. As he glanced over, he noticed that the boy had vivid green eyes and was only slightly shorter than him.
“The bridge isn’t really high enough to kill you,” the boy said suddenly, his eyes on the water. “Oh, it’s high enough that you’d break something if you jumped, but most likely you’d end up drowning because you couldn’t swim afterwards.”
They stood in silence a moment before the boy spoke again. “What brings you out here?”
Jou shrugged, not really wanting to talk, but found himself answering before he could come up with anything to say. “I got in a fight with my lover.” He bit his lip, fighting back tears, not wanting this stranger to see him cry.
“Ah.” The black-haired teen was silent for a few minutes before he went on. “Want to talk about it?”
The blond took a deep breath and spilled his soul to the dark-haired stranger as they stared down at the dark water below. The tears came back as he found himself describing humiliations and put downs that he’d never told anyone about, not even Yugi. He never told Yugi most of what happened because he knew if he did, Yami would make sure Seto could never hurt anyone again and Jou didn’t want him hurt. He loved the brunette too much. However, Seto had to be in control of everything all the time and had even started to dictate what Jou could do with his time. That was the last straw that had sent the blond out into the night, but he knew this outburst was the result of so much resentment and anger building up. In public, Seto was cold and condescending, at home he was warmer, but was constantly ordering Jou around as if he were some kind of slave. He shivered, remembering just how in control the brunette had to be when they had sex. He’d been tied up and hurt occasionally, but Seto had always apologized and Jou had enjoyed it to a certain extent. When he fell silent, he waited for the boy to express his disgust, to tell Jou how sick he was, and how he should be grateful that Seto put up with him.
“It sounds like he doesn’t deserve you.”
Jou looked up in shock, brown eyes wide. “What the…?”
The boy turned to smile at him. “He sounds like an ass. You shouldn’t have to put up with that.”
“But I…”
The black-haired boy shook his head. “It took me years to realize what I’m going to tell you: No one is worth tearing your soul apart for. You don’t need to stay there and put up with his shit.” He held up a hand to stop Jou’s protest. “Yeah, it’ll hurt. It may even hurt for a very long time, but the hurt will fade and you can move on with your life. You can stand there right now and say you’ll never love again, but it can happen. I’ve seen it happen before.”
The blond turned to face the water, thinking.
“Drowning isn’t a very good way to die.”
Jou looked at his odd companion in confusion, but the boy was watching the water below.
“When you hit the water, instinct kicks in and you fight like crazy for air, but even the best swimmer gets tired eventually. Then, you start going under and you try holding your breath until you can come back up ‘til it gets to the point that you can’t make it back to the surface. When you can’t hold your breath anymore, you let it out and instinct tells you to take a breath, but you inhale water instead of air.” He paused, closing his eyes briefly. “Your lungs burn and your heart beats franticly, but eventually you suffocate.” He looked over at Jou. “That’s what your relationship is doing to you. However, you’ve got a choice. You can choose to get out before you can’t keep head above water anymore. It may seem hopeless, but I’m sure you have someone who would throw you a lifeline.” He fell silent, vibrant grass green staring into murky brown.
Jou looked away first, hands clenched on the rail. “I don’t know, I love him so much and… and I don’t know if I can make it without him.”
The boy snorted, the reached out to lay a hand over one of Jou’s. “Trust me. You’re stronger than you think you are.” He smiled when Jou looked up. “Life is a gift, you deserve to enjoy every moment of it. Don’t let yourself throw it away for him or because of him.”
Jou stared into the boy’s eyes, knowing he was being completely honest. Suddenly, he blushed as he realized he had just poured out his heart to a complete stranger; one that strangely seemed to genuinely care about his well being.
The other boy chuckled and let go of Jou’s hand. “Go someplace you know you’ll be safe and sleep on it. You’ve got time to decide what you want to do. Don’t make your decision based on what he wants; it sounds like well past time you start thinking about what you want.”
Jou smiled. “Thanks. For everything, I mean. I really don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t been out here tonight.”
He chuckled. “You’d have probably jumped off the bridge.”
Jou laughed. “Probably. Thanks again. I’m gonna head back toward the city. You want to walk with me a ways?”
The boy shook his head. “That’s alright. I stay around here. Go on, go find a bed. You look like you’re about to fall over.”
Jou laughed again and clapped a hand on the boy’s shoulder before walking off the bridge and heading back down the road he had been walking. He didn’t know why, but his heart felt so much lighter and the future looked brighter. The kid was right. He had plenty of time to make his decisions.
