It’s My Secret to
Keep
By

Chapter One – Kakushikoto
It’s my
secret, dammit, and I intend to keep it! Why would I be so intent on keeping
it? It’s a big secret and I mean a really big secret. I know that it’ll
come out in time, and when it does… I’ll lose everything. I’m trying to prevent
that.
My name is
Joey Wheeler and there are only three people who know my secret other than me.
My dad knows, but in the drunken haze he has lived in these past ten years he
has completely forgotten. My mom knows but she’s disowned me so she couldn’t
care less about it. The other person who knows is my little sister, Serenity,
and she helped me sort out all the details so I could keep this secret. She
wouldn’t tell a soul. But we both know that one day, one of us will slip up and
the secret will be revealed.
That will
be the day Joey Wheeler dies…
I just hope
that today is not that day. That is the thought I think as I wake up every day.
I hope today is not the day Joey Wheeler dies.
My morning
is typical. I get up and change into my uniform since I bathed the night
before. I grab a breakfast bar as I’m scrambling out the door, and I start to
make my way over to the Kame Game Shop where Yugi lives. Today isn’t much
different, except I don’t put my uniform on. It’s Saturday and our school is
hosting a small carnival, so even though we still have school and are required
to be there, we don’t have to wear our uniforms. These are the days I most love
to be at school.
I love
today especially. My school is hosting the carnival but other schools are
coming as well. It’s a big charity gig, kind of like a smorgasbord. The little
Kaiba, Mokuba, will be there. His school is running/hosting one of about five
food stands. Serenity’s coming too. Her school is hosting a few of the smaller
rides. Most of the big rides are of course being hosted by Kaiba Corp… headed
by the arrogant, bastard, cute Seto Kaiba.
Now before
I go on, let me make one thing clear. I am NOT gay! I may think Kaiba’s
cute, but I’m not gay. Now we have that settled.
So I walk
to the Kame Game Shop, eating my breakfast bar as I go. It doesn’t take me long
to get there. It never does, and Yugi’s always waiting outside, just like he is
now. “Hey, Yug’!”
“Hi, Joey!
Are you ready to have some fun at the carnival?” asks Yugi with a happy smile.
“You bet I
am! I can’t wait to see Serenity again!” I exclaim with a smile.
“This will
be the first time you’ve seen her since the Battle City tournament, won’t it?”
asks Yugi as we start to walk to school.
I nod. “Mom
hates me and doesn’t want Serenity to hang out with me.”
“I don’t
understand your mother. Why does she hate you so?”
“Well… she
thinks I’m a slut and a thug and an overall bad influence on Serenity,” I say
shrugging my shoulders.
“You’re not
a slut. I’ve never even seen you go out on a single date,” says Yugi, “Not even
with Mai, and I believe she asked you so you could take her to bed.”
“I’m not
that kind of guy though. I…” I sigh. “I’m saving myself for the person I love,
even though that person will never love me back.”
“You know
what I think?” asks Yugi stopping before the gates to the school.
“Um… no. I
don’t know what you’re thinking.”
“I think
you should just ask Kaiba out on a date and be done with it!” Yugi winks at me
and gives me his most innocent smile.
My eyes
widen, and I feel the blood rush to my face. I’m either extremely angry or I’m
blushing. “I am not gay and I certainly don’t like Kaiba!”
“Then why
are you blushing, Joey?”
Dammit. I
turn away from Yugi. “I am not gay.”
“Oh. Sorry,
Joey, but I think you and Kaiba would make a very nice couple,” says Yugi, “And
well… you might be good for each other.”
“What is
that supposed to mean?” I ask turning back towards Yugi.
“Is that a
new bruise on your neck?” Yugi pulls my shirt down so a little more of my thin
neck is showing. He frowns at the bruise.
“Yeah. Last
night was sure fun,” I say quietly pulling my shirt to cover the bruise again.
“Kaiba
could protect you from him,” says Yugi.
“I can
protect myself. I have it all worked out. In a few more weeks, I’m moving out,”
I say, “I know this nice guy who’ll let me stay in his apartment while he’s
gone.”
“You’ll be
house sitting?” asks Yugi.
I nod. I
hate to lie to Yugi, but there are some things he just wouldn’t understand… like
why I would go against the school’s regulations on students having jobs so that
I could work at Selene’s. He’d also wonder why Selene would have hired a minor
in the first place.
“Joey!
Yugi!”
We turn to
look at the rest of our little group of friends as they rush up.
I slap
Tristan on the back before putting him in a headlock. “Now let’s clear up a few
things.”
Bakura
smiles at me before pulling Tea and Yugi to the side. “I think Joey needs to
have a few words alone with Serenity’s admirers.”
I glare at
Duke who is unfortunately out of arms’ reach. “If I see either one of you
hitting on my sister, I’ll make mince meat out of you! Got it?”
“Got it,”
mumbles Tristan, and I let him go.
“Hey! It’s
not my fault if your sister finds me attractive!” exclaims Duke flicking the
end of his sissy ponytail over his shoulder.
“Why I
ought to…”
Tristan
grabs my arms from behind to prevent me from attacking Duke. “You don’t want
Serenity to know you’ve been fighting!”
“She won’t
know!”
Duke smiles
and touches the side of his face. “Oh, I’m all right, Serenity! Joey didn’t hit
me that hard!”
“Let me go,
Tristan! I’ll pound him so deep into the dirt, he’ll come out in America!” I
snarl.
“You should
learn to control your mutt, Motou!” exclaims Kaiba walking by.
I turn my
eyes to Kaiba’s back and growl as I rip my arms from Tristan’s grasp. I breathe
deeply as I watch his white trench coat flutter behind him. Damn that sexy
bastard. Why the hell does he have to wear something to show off his muscled
back and hide his nice butt? I lick my lips subconsciously. I smirk
confidently in the knowledge that he’ll take offense to my next words. “You
might want to watch who you’re calling a mutt, you rich snob. You just might
get bitten!”
Kaiba spins
around to glare at me.
All my
friends are staring at me… not me and Kaiba… just me. It’s as if they expect me
to jump on him and… oh, no! They don’t all think I’m attracted to Kaiba,
do they?
“Is that a
threat, mutt?” asks Kaiba stepping right up in front of me.
I growl.
“Or a
promise?” Kaiba smirks.
My eyes
widen as I gasp. I wasn’t expecting that! I can’t control it. My fist flies of
its own accord right into his pretty jaw.
Kaiba reels
back away from me and glares at me. “So, the stupid mutt does more than bark!”
“I’m not a
mutt, you fucking bastard!” I snap.
“Joey!”
exclaims Yugi stepping in front of me, “Don’t let him get to you! Remember…
Serenity will be here soon!”
“Yeah. And
besides… that snob isn’t worth my time!” I exclaim, “Come on! We have to check
into our home room before we get to the carnival.” I start walking away from
Kaiba and my friends.
“Learn to
control your dog, Motou. Next time he hits me, he won’t walk away!” exclaims
Kaiba before storming off.
My friends
hurry after me.
“What was
that about, Joey?” asks Tea.
“Yeah, I
thought you had the hots for Kaiba. Why’d you hit him?” asks Tristan.
“What? I do
not like Kaiba!” I exclaim.
“Then why
do you spend every waking moment sneaking glances at him?” asks Bakura. “You’ve
been doing it all year, but more so since the Battle City tournament ended.”
“I am not
gay, and I do not like Seto Kaiba,” I say, “Now drop the subject.”
“You know.
There’s nothing wrong with being gay or bisexual, Joey,” says Duke.
I growl.
“Subject
dropped,” says Duke quickly.
We finish
walking to our homeroom classes, Duke heading off as the rest of us enter our
room. We sit down at our desks just before the bell rings.
I glance
over to the corner where Kaiba sits impatiently. I turn back when I hear Bakura
giggle. I yawn and tune out the sound of the teacher calling out the names of
students.
“Joey
Wheeler! Is it too much to ask that you sleep at home and not at class?”
exclaims the teacher.
I snap to
attention and smile sheepishly. “Sorry, Sensei.”
“Now that
we are all present and accounted for… you have all been assigned duties to
perform before the other schools arrive which is in a half hour,” says the
teacher, “So hurry along!”
The entire
class rushes out of the room.
“So who’s
doing what?” I ask.
“Bakura and
I are on the food committee,” says Yugi.
“We have to
take the refreshments from the cafeteria’s refrigerators to the individual food
stands,” says Bakura.
“I’m on
decorating,” says Tea, “So we have some last minute banners to hang.”
“Duke and I
are on prize detail,” says Tristan smiling as the black-haired teen walks up.
“What about
you, Joey?” asks Duke.
“They stuck
me on safety! I’m going to have to go around with Kaiba talking to the ride
operators!” I say sadly.
Kaiba comes
up behind me and grabs my arm roughly. He starts dragging me away. “Let’s go,
mutt!”
“I’m not a
dog, asshole!” I exclaim ripping my arm away and walking ahead of Kaiba.
“Why do you
keep staring at me, mutt?” asks Seto as we leave the building and head towards
the field where the carnival is already set up and ready to go.
“I’m not staring at you,
moneybags.”
“Not now,
but earlier.”
“You’re
hallucinating! Why would I stare at your ugly face, Kaiba? There’s so much more
in life that’s a hell of a lot prettier than you!” I exclaim.
“Are you
attracted to me?” asks Kaiba.
I spin
around to glare at Kaiba. My eyes hold all the anger I possess. “Go fuck
yourself, Kaiba!”
Kaiba
smirks at me and ruffles my hair as he passes me.
“What the
hell?”
“Follow
your master, puppy Joey,” says Kaiba.
“You’re not
my master, and I’m not a dog!”
“Come!”
shouts Kaiba.
I start
walking, but I speed my pace up to walk beside Kaiba. “By the way, you ass,
don’t touch me!”
“A little
late, don’t you think?” asks Kaiba running his fingers up my side.
I jump and
swing my fist at him again.
Kaiba
dodges my blow easily. “I see Motou isn’t training you very well. You need a
new master. Do you want to be my new puppy? Mokuba’s been begging me for a
dog!”
“I’m not a
dog!” I shout.
Kaiba
smirks but doesn’t reply.
I don’t say
another word as I walk around with Kaiba to check that all necessary safety
precautions have been implemented. I nearly jump for joy after we talk to the
last man. I grab the checklist from Kaiba and race off as fast as I can to give
it to our teacher. I thrust the papers into her hand and head towards the gates
where the other schools are just beginning to arrive.
“Joey! Over
here!”
I start
making my way towards the voice, and I scowl as I see my sweet, little sister
Serenity… surrounded by egotistical, hormonal boys. “Duke, Tristan! Get away
from my sister!”
“Joey!”
exclaims Serenity running to embrace me.
I pull
Serenity close and whisper a single endearing word into her ear, “Siren.”
Serenity
smiles, and I see her response in her brown eyes.
I smile,
knowing full well the word she just spoke in her mind, and even though it
wasn’t spoken aloud, I’m glad to have heard it.
“I see the
mutt has found a puppy playmate!” exclaims Kaiba as he walks up behind me.
“I’m in
such a good mood right now, even you can’t upset me, Kaiba!” I exclaim
shooting him a glare over my shoulder.
Mokuba
stands beside Kaiba, smiling at Serenity. “Hi, Serenity.”
“Hey,
Mokuba!” Serenity blushes as she greets the younger Kaiba.
I glare at
Mokuba with my best ‘touch my sister and die’ look, which I find totally
useless against the boy’s cutest puppy dog pleading.
“It looks
like the group’s all here,” says Yugi.
“Since when
is Kaiba part of our group?” I ask staring at Yugi with wide eyes.
Yugi smiles
and looks at me innocently. “He joined when Mokuba did. Besides, I’m sure
you’re glad he’s around!”
All the
blood rushes to my face again, and I turn away.
“Big
brother?” asks Serenity, “Are you blushing?”
Shit. “No!
I’m pissed off at Kaiba!”
“What did I
do?” asks Mokuba.
“Not you,
Mokie! The other Kaiba!” I exclaim.
Kaiba grabs
my shirt collar and spins me to face him. “Who gave you permission to call him Mokie?”
Double
shit. First slip-up.
“I did,
Seto,” says Mokuba, “Let Joey go.”
Kaiba
releases me rather reluctantly.
I couldn’t
help see something in Kaiba’s eyes that I’ve never seen there before. I don’t
know what it could be, but I think… I think I like seeing it there. “I need
some time alone, guys. Serenity, do you want to wander with me for a bit?”
“Of course
I do, Joey!” exclaims Serenity.
“How about
we all do our own thing and meet at the Ferris wheel in an hour?” asks Bakura.
“Sounds
good!”
With those
words, we all separate, most of us heading off in groups of twos except for
Tea, Yugi, and Bakura who head towards the game booths together.
Serenity
and I head towards the far side of the field where several small to medium
sized tents have been erected. We don’t notice the pair of Kaibas following at
a distance.
I stop
Serenity outside of a small tent, and I look around in all directions. I don’t
see anyone I know, so I pull Serenity inside.
“Are you
going to sing, Jo?” asks Serenity seeing the karaoke machine.
“For you,”
I say, “only for you, angel.”
Serenity
smiles so bright she lights up the tent. She sits down in one of the four
chairs and watches me expectantly.
I move to
the karaoke machine and quickly pick one of the songs. I lift the microphone
and prepare to sing.
I don’t
notice the tent flap move or the youngest Kaiba slip just inside. I stare into
Serenity’s honey-brown eyes, the eyes we share, and I sing my heart out for
her. I sing in a beautiful alto voice, and the words just flow past my lips.
“You think that I go home at night, take off my clothes, turn out the lights, but
I burn letters that I write to you, to make you love me…”
Serenity
smiles at me, and I nearly melt.
“Yeah, I
drive naked through the park and run the stop sign in the dark, stand in the
street, yell out my heart to make, to make you love me!” I sing enthusiastically,
“I am extraordinary, if you'd ever get to know me. I am extraordinary, I am
just your ordinary average every day sane psycho! Super goddess! Average every
day sane psycho.”
Serenity
giggles.
I’ve made
her happy. I smile. “You may not believe in me, but I believe in you. So I
still take the trash out. Does that make me too normal for you? So dig a little
deeper, cause you still don't get it yet. See me lickin' my lips, need a
primitive fix, and I'll make, I'll make you love me!”
“Jo,” whispers
Serenity softly.
“I am
extraordinary, if you'd ever get to know me. I am extraordinary, I am just your
ordinary average every day sane psycho. Super goddess! Average every day sane
psycho. Super goddess!” I sing, “See me jump through hoops for you. You stand
there watching me performing. What exactly do you do? Have you ever thought
it's you that's boring? Who the hell are you?”
Mokuba
watches my performance with wide eyes, but I don’t see him standing there. I
would die if I saw that look of remembrance in his eyes.
“I am
extraordinary, if you'd ever get to know me. I am extraordinary, I am just your
ordinary average every day sane psycho. Super goddess! Average every day sane
psycho. Yeah… Average every day sane psycho. Super goddess! Average every day
sane psycho. You know, an average every day sane psycho. Super goddess! Average
every day sane psycho. I’m just your average every day sane psycho!” I close my
eyes as the last note sounds and I set the microphone down. I don’t see the
shock of near recognition on Mokuba’s face.
Serenity
gasps as she sees the black haired teen. “Mokuba!”
I open my
eyes and look at the doorway fearfully.
“Sorry. I
didn’t realize the tent was occupied!” exclaims Mokuba very quickly, “Seto had
a phone call he had to take so I came over here to wait! I didn’t even hear
you! Would you sing another song, Joey?”
I breathe a
sigh of relief. I thought my secret might be forcing its way out. “Um… yeah, I
guess. How about…”
Mokuba
steps in and sits beside Serenity as I look over the songs on the listing.
“Someday
by Nickelback?” I finish.
Serenity
applauds.
“How the
hell did we wind up like this? Why weren’t we able to see the signs that we
missed and try to turn the tables?” I sing in a soft tenor voice, occasionally
dropping down into the bass range, “I wish you’d unclench your fists and unpack
your suitcase. Lately there’s been too much of this. Don’t think it’s too late.
Nothin’s wrong just as long as you know that someday I will…” I take a deep
breath. “Someday, somehow! Gonna make it alright but not right now. I know
you’re wondering when. You’re the only one who knows that. Someday, somehow!
Gonna make it alright but not right now. I know you’re wondering when!”
Whatever
recognition that had donned on Mokuba fades away as I finish the song and lower
the microphone.
The tent
flap flies open and in marches Kaiba. He sees me. “Mutt.”
“Let’s go,
Serenity. It’s getting crowded in here,” I say glaring at Kaiba.
Serenity
gives Mokuba a sad look for one moment before heading out with me.
“Seto, why
can’t you just tell him…” The rest of Mokuba’s hushed words fall on deaf ears
as I lead Serenity away.
“Big
brother. Look! It’s a fortuneteller! Maybe we could all go there after we meet
up with the others!” Serenity gives me her famous puppy pout.
I smile. I
can’t deny her. “Of course we’ll go!”
Serenity
wraps her arms around my waist, and we head towards the games so I can try to
win her a teddy bear.
At the end
of the hour, I lead Serenity towards the Ferris wheel. I rub my shoulder with
my left hand.
Serenity
cuddles the three-foot tall golden Labrador toy. She smiles at me. “Thank you
for the puppy, Jo!”
“It wasn’t
that hard winning twelve games in a row!” I exclaim with a smile as I rub my
shoulder harder.
“Which is why
it took you fifty dollars to win it!” exclaims Serenity.
I feel the
blood rush to my face. “You deserve it, sis!”
“Thank you,
Joey!”
I pull
Serenity into an embrace.
“Hey, Joey!
Quit hogging the most attractive girl here!” exclaims Duke as we reach our
group of friends.
I scowl at
Duke.
“It appears
the puppy family is expanding,” says Kaiba stepping up with Mokuba. He smirks.
“Let’s go
on the Ferris wheel!” exclaims Tea quickly trying to stop an argument.
“I’m going
up with Serenity!” exclaims Tristan.
“No, I am!”
exclaims Duke.
“You’re
both wrong! Serenity’s riding with me!” I exclaim.
We all get
into the short line for the Ferris wheel and make our way up front.
“Hey! These
can carry four people!” exclaims Yugi climbing inside.
Tea climbs
into the basket with Yugi.
I glare at
Tristan and Duke and shake my head.
Tristan
sighs and climbs in across from Yugi.
“Go ahead,
Bakura. I’ll ride with some of my lovelies,” says Duke winking at the giggling
girls just behind us.
Bakura
smiles and climbs in to sit beside Tristan. “Thanks, Duke!”
The basket
moves up as another comes down.
“Come on,
Serenity,” I say helping her inside.
“Mokuba!
Kaiba, you can join us!” exclaims Serenity.
I stop
halfway from climbing in.
“If the
mutt would move his tail, we’d consider it!” exclaims Kaiba.
“We’d love
to join you!” exclaims Mokuba pushing me inside. He climbs in.
“Sit by me,
Mokuba!” exclaims Serenity cuddling her stuffed toy.
My eyes
widen as Mokuba sits beside my sister and starts talking energetically to her.
I sit down across from Serenity to be joined a moment later by Kaiba.
“Joey?”
asks Mokuba as our basket moves up so more people can get on the ride, “Do you
like Seto?”
“No.”
Kaiba
glares at me.
“Be honest,
Joey,” says Mokuba.
“I told you.
I don’t like…” I glance at Kaiba. “Him.”
“Why?” asks
Serenity, “You two have some sort of chemistry together. Why don’t you like
each other?”
“Everyone
seems to think you’re both hiding very deep emotions for each other,” says
Mokuba looking at Kaiba.
“I don’t
want to love someone who thinks I’m a dog,” I say.
“And I
would never love someone as stupid as this mutt,” says Kaiba, “The others need
to get their eyes examined. If we are hiding any emotions, it has to be hate!”
I nod.
“We’re just
worried,” says Serenity.
“About you
two,” says Mokuba, “It isn’t healthy for you both…”
“To be
alone all the time,” finishes Serenity.
“I like
being alone.” Kaiba glances at me, and I see that unrecognizable emotion in his
eyes again.
I sigh.
“I’m sorry, you two, but I won’t let myself be hurt.”
“Who says
you have to be hurt to care for someone?” asks Mokuba, but Serenity places her
hand on his to silence him.
The Ferris
wheel, now completely full, starts to move in its designated path.
Serenity
bites her bottom lip. “I understand, Jo, but I want you to be happy.”
I smile.
“If you want me to be happy, Serenity, then you be happy. Your happiness is all
that matters to me!”
“I know
you’re thinking the same thing, Seto,” says Mokuba, “but don’t say it.”
Kaiba gives
a brisk nod of his head.
I lean back
in my seat and close my eyes. I feel a hand brush against my knee, but I don’t
pay any attention to it. I sigh and open my eyes to look at the window, not out
it as it may seem but at the glass itself.
The hand
leaves my knee after giving it a gentle squeeze.
I turn to
look at my sister and our two companions. “So, Serenity, after this should we
see if everyone wants to see the fortuneteller?”
“Yes!”
“A
fortuneteller? That is so cool! Can we go, Seto?” asks Mokuba.
Kaiba
sighs. “I hate people who pretend to know what they’re doing! No one can
predict the future!”
“Please,
big brother!” exclaims Mokuba giving Kaiba his best pout.
“Fine, but
I’m not letting that nut read my future!” exclaims Kaiba.
Mokuba smiles
and grabs Serenity’s hand.
I glare at
Mokuba. “Serenity?”
Serenity
smiles. “Yes, Joey?”
“Is there
something you’re not telling me… a secret perhaps?” I ask turning my eyes to
Serenity.
Serenity
opens her eyes wide so I can read her emotions through the honey depths.
I smile and
nod my understanding. I also smell a different scent upon her, a very light
perfume.
“How can
you talk to each other without using words?” asks Mokuba looking back and forth
between us.
“Well…” I
feel the blood rush to my face. I must be blushing.
“When we
were younger, we were very close,” exclaims Serenity closing her eyes, “We were
more than siblings! We were more than best friends! I don’t know what we were.”
“We had a
bond that was so deep we learned to read each other’s minds. We could see each
other’s deepest emotions, and we just knew…” I let my voice trail off as I
close my eyes. I can’t prevent the tears that slide down my cheeks.
“I don’t
know what I would do in your situation,” says Kaiba quietly.
I rub my eyes
before snapping them open to stare at Kaiba. He can’t possibly know, can he?
“What?”
“If Mokuba
didn’t live with me. I don’t know what I would do in your situation,” says
Kaiba.
I reach out
tentatively and pat Kaiba on the shoulder. “You’d probably go a little crazy,
like I am.”
Kaiba
glares at me. “Stupid mutt!”
I close my
eyes and nod my head.
Kaiba’s
eyes widen as he stares at me. “You agree that you’re a mutt?”
I open my
eyes and look into the icy blue pools of Kaiba’s eyes. I take a deep breath.
“I’m certainly not a pure blood. And I guess I am pretty stupid. It’s a lack of
energy.”
Mokuba and
Serenity smile at each other.
“I am not a
dog, Kaiba!” I exclaim as my lips curl up into a smile.
Kaiba
smirks.
Mokuba
catches Kaiba’s eye as Serenity starts talking to me about boys.
Kaiba leans
closer to Mokuba.
“Kiss him,
big brother,” whispers Mokuba, “I know Joey likes you, and you like Joey. Just
kiss him!”
“He hates
me,” whispers Kaiba.
Mokuba
glares at Kaiba, but his older brother only shakes his head.
“I have to
approve of any guy you want to date!” I exclaim smiling, “I need to make sure
they’re good enough for my little sister!”
“Okay,
Joey!” Serenity smiles. “And I have to approve of anyone you want to date! You
have a reputation to uphold! We can’t let just anyone try to change you into
some weakling!”
I chuckle.
“When are
you going to get a girlfriend, Joey?” asks Mokuba.
I sigh and
shrug my shoulders. “I don’t want a girlfriend. No offense, Serenity, but girls
are just too much work! They require all sorts of attention and gifts and
stuff. Besides, what girl would ever accept a date offer from me when they
still have a faint glimmer of hope that Kaiba might ask them out! I don’t stand
a chance against their hope… not until Kaiba has a steady girl…”
“Or boy!”
Mokuba giggles.
I raise an
eyebrow. “Are you bisexual, Kaiba?”
Kaiba
glares at Mokuba. “No!”
“He’s
actually just gay!” exclaims Mokuba happily.
“Congrats.
Just so you know, I’m completely straight,” I say. I turn my eyes out the
window until, just moments later, we descend to be let off the ride.
We gather
all our friends.
“Joey and I
found a fortuneteller!” exclaims Serenity, “And we thought it would be nice if
we all went there together!”
Yugi
smiles. “That would be nice!”
Tea
blushes. “Maybe I can have my love fortune told!”
“With my
luck, that fortune teller would say I’m supposed to end up with you, Tea,” says
Bakura sadly. He sighs.
“What would
be so wrong with that?” asks Tea.
I start
chuckling.
Tristan and
Duke burst out laughing.
Yugi
blushes. “Well, Tea. Let’s just say that you are not Bakura’s preferred body
type!”
“Oh!” Tea’s
eyes widen.
Serenity
and I lead the way to the medium-sized tent that houses the fortuneteller, and
we all head inside.
A fairly
young woman, probably in her mid-twenties, sits in the candlelight staring into
the clear depths of a crystal ball with her silver eyes. A red scarf wraps
around her head to completely hide her hair, but if her eyebrows are any
indication, it would be a dark brown. “Come in. Sweet lady, sit down.”
“You’re up,
Serenity,” says Tea.
Serenity
smiles as she sits down before the silver-eyed woman.
“Dear, dear
Serenity. I have much to tell you but I can only say this,” says the woman,
“The person whom drowned long ago will soon appear for you again. You will need
to choose the one you love most. If you cannot, you might lose them both.”
Serenity
blinks. “What?”
The woman
closes her eyes.
Serenity
wobbles as she stands up.
I rush to
wrap my arms around Serenity and hold her up.
“Sit down,
Tea,” says the woman.
Tea sits
down in the chair.
The woman
opens her eyes and looks into Tea’s blue eyes. “In the near future, you will
receive your first paycheck doing what you most love.”
“I’ll get
paid to dance?” asks Tea happily, “What else?”
“I have no
more to tell you now,” says the woman.
Tea sighs
as she stands.
The woman
looks to Yugi and holds her hand towards the chair. “Pharaoh’s light…”
“I’ll
stand,” says Yugi.
“Victory
will soon be yours, but not in what you think it will be,” says the woman.
Mokuba sits
down in the chair. “Tell me my future, Lady…”
“Who are
you?” asks Yugi looking at the woman.
“I am Lady
Raven of the Rogue,” says the woman lowering her eyes to her crystal ball and
touching it delicately with her long fingernails painted silver. “I have agreed
to come here today to tell fortunes for all these students because it is my
duty to the one who was once my Pharaoh.”
“Lady Raven
of the Rogue? Did you worship Isis?” asks Yugi.
The woman,
Lady Raven, shakes her head. “I worshipped then as I do now. I am Priestess to
Osiris.”
“I
understand,” says Yugi.
Lady Raven
looks at Mokuba. She takes a deep breath. “Listen for the sounds of the
sirens.”
“What?”
asks Mokuba.
“Listen to
my words and comprehend them, Mokie,” says Lady Raven, “Listen for the sounds
of the sirens.”
Mokuba stands and walks over
to Kaiba with his eyebrows furrowed in thought.
Lady Raven
beckons Tristan forward.
Tristan
stands behind the chair.
“Your true
love stands amongst us, but be warned that your behavior may push them away,”
says Lady Raven.
Tristan
turns to look at Serenity who still shakes in my arms. He smiles.
Lady Raven
turns her silver eyes to the white haired boy. “Bakura. I have little to tell
you, but you will understand it when it happens.”
Bakura
nods.
“Insanity
is contagious.”
Bakura
blushes and turns away.
“Sit down,
Wheeler. I have much to tell you, and you will not wish to stand for it,” says
Lady Raven.
“Jo?” asks
Serenity with a whimper.
“Sit with
me,” I whisper moving us to the chair. I sit down and pull Serenity into my
lap.
Serenity
curls up against my chest… her stuffed puppy forgotten near the entranceway.
“Do I want
to know what my future holds?” I ask clutching Serenity nervously.
Lady Raven
sighs and shakes her head.
“All right
then, Lady Raven of the Rogue. Let me have it,” I say.
Lady Raven
takes a deep breath and gazes into her crystal ball. “That which you have been
dreading these past six years will finally occur. Three weeks time you have
before the ultimate heartbreak and utmost pain attempt to destroy you. But if
you are not wary, this will not be the last pain you endure from the accident
of your blood. There will be the means of escape when you most have need of it
yet you will hesitate to accept it. Do not for it will be the light of Heaven
you seek.”
I stare,
wide eyed and trembling, at Lady Raven.
“Joey, do
you understand what she said?” asks Yugi noticing how pale I’ve become, “You
look like you’ve seen a ghost!”
“Jo?” asks
Serenity trembling in my arms, “What’s going to happen?”
I take a
deep breath and stop shaking. “Nothing. No future is set in stone!”
Serenity
stands up. She smiles determinedly. “Let’s change our futures together!”
I stand up.
“Deal!”
Serenity
hugs me tightly. “I love you, Joey!”
“I love
you, Serenity!” I squeeze her gently.
Duke steps
forward and smiles at Serenity. He looks towards Lady Raven. “What does my
future hold?”
“Seek not
love from the sisters fair. For neither would accept your vain heart. There is
but one to whom you are destined,” says Lady Raven.
“I’m not
interested in sisters! Just Serenity!” exclaims Duke.
I hold
Serenity tighter.
“We’re done
now. Let’s go!” exclaims Kaiba.
“What about
your fortune, Kaiba?” asks Bakura.
“I don’t
believe in any of this!” exclaims Kaiba heading towards the exit.
Lady Raven
stands up abruptly and slaps her hand on the table. “The girl you used to love
would have believed in me!”
Kaiba stops
in his tracks. He turns to glare at Lady Raven. “I’ve never loved a girl
before!”
“You say
that to me, but could you have said that to the little blonde girl you knew at
the orphanage? Have you really been searching for her all these years and not
discovered her?” asks Lady Raven, “I know where she is… your golden haired,
golden eyed angel.”
Kaiba looks
at me.
I see that
emotion, so confusing and unrecognizable in his eyes again.
“I have
given up that dream. I no longer care to find her. I’ve found something
better,” says Kaiba with a slight smirk.
My face
suddenly feels very hot. Dammit. I must be blushing again.
“Like it or
not, Seto! You will find what you thought lost, but it will not appear
as you expect it to be. It will be revealed before the final day of your secret
event.” Lady Raven straightens her clothes before retaking her seat.
“You are a
fool if you think your words mean anything to me!” exclaims Kaiba, “Let’s go!”
Serenity
lifts her puppy as we all file out of the tent.
“Seto? How
did she know about the event?” asks Mokuba looking up at Seto.
Kaiba
shakes his head.
“What
event?” I ask.
“I am
hosting another Duel Monsters tournament,” says Kaiba, “by invite only this
time.”
I hang my
head and look away sadly. “Well, I’m sure you’ll have fun, Yugi.”
“Don’t even
think I will allow you to refuse my invitation, Wheeler!” exclaims Kaiba
smirking at me, “The invites go out tomorrow!”
I feel the
blood rush to my face.
“If I
didn’t know any better, Kaiba, I’d say you were flirting with my big
brother!” exclaims Serenity happily.
Kaiba
blushes and turns away.
“So, Kaiba…
who was the girl at the orphanage?” asks Duke.
“She’s the
reason I’m gay,” says Kaiba.
“Must have
been quite some woman,” says Tristan.
Serenity
smiles at me, and I reflect her smile right back at her.
“She was,”
says Mokuba blushing, “So was her sister! Now she was a cutie!”
Serenity
blushes. “Really?”
“Yeah! She
looked a little like you, Serenity,” says Mokuba.
“Let’s go
on some more rides!” exclaims Yugi.
We all
hurry off to go on the rides.
After hours
of fun, I carry the small stuffed animals Tristan and Duke won for Serenity
while she stills cuddles her giant puppy. I help her onto the school bus with
her cargo and kiss her cheek. “When will I see you again?”
“If there’s
really a new tournament, I’ll come to watch you!” exclaims Serenity kissing my
cheek.
“I’ll call
you if I get an invite,” I say, “In fact, I’ll call anyway!”
“I can’t
wait to hear from you, big…” Serenity smiles and her eyes twinkle.
“I’ll call
as soon as I can!” I hurry off the bus with a final wave. I sit down on the
sidewalk and watch as the other students from Serenity’s school board the bus,
and I stare into the honey-brown eyes that I share with Serenity as she watches
me out her window. I make a hand sign to her, one of the few pieces of sign
language that I know.
Serenity
reads my ‘I love you’ sign with a smile and responds quickly as the bus starts
to move away.
“Repeat
Jo?” asks Mokuba coming to sit beside me, “Repeat what?”
“It’s our
little way of saying ‘ditto’, Mokuba,” I say watching the bus turn a corner and
move out of sight. “Is your brother really inviting me to join his next
tournament?”
“Would you
mind not talking as if I was not standing right behind you, mutt?” asks
Kaiba from behind me.
I jump to
my feet into the street and spin to glare at Kaiba. “Rich bastard! I’m not a
mutt!”
Mokuba
shoots Kaiba a pleading glance.
Kaiba
sighs. “Mokuba wants you to join us for dinner, Wheeler.”
I look at
the ground at my feet and step back onto the sidewalk.
“Seto…”
“And I will
try to refrain from calling you a mutt,” says Kaiba.
“This isn’t
some trick to get me alone to beat me up or some shit like that, is it, Kaiba?”
I glare at him, and my heart skips a beat.
“Nothing of
the sort.” Kaiba smirks.
I nod
slowly. “I could do with some dinner.”
Kaiba looks
at me with that same expression in his eyes. The edges of his lips curl up into
a slight smile. He has a beautiful smile.
“What
time?”
“We have
dinner at seven!” exclaims Mokuba happily.
“Be at the
mansion then, puppy,” says Kaiba ruffling my hair.
“I’m not a
dog, Kaiba!” I growl viciously at him, and he simply smirks at me.
Mokuba
smiles.
“I’ll be
there,” I say turning away from the brothers. “Is there anything else?”
“No, that’s
it,” says Mokuba.
I nod and
start to walk away. “Later, Mokie!”
Kaiba
growls.
I hurry
home and slip into my room quietly. I set my alarm clock for six pm before
lying down in bed and falling asleep.
My alarm
clock goes off and I climb from bed. I straighten my clothes and run a hand through
my hair to tame some of the wildness. I stop at the door to my room and listen
for any sounds indicating my father might be home. I sigh when I don’t hear
anything. I hurry out of the house and start the long walk to the Kaiba
mansion. I arrive at the main gate just shortly before seven, and the gates
swing open as if they were expecting me to march up to them.
I shiver in
the chill wind. I should have grabbed my jacket before heading out. I run up to
the doors leading into the mansion, and it swings open at my arrival.
An aged
butler stands in the doorway. “Master Kaiba has been expecting you. Please
follow me.”
I shiver as
I follow the butler into a warm room. I walk towards the fire as the butler
disappears.
“You look
like you’re freezing to death, puppy,” says Kaiba, and I spin to find the
source of his voice.
Kaiba sits
in one of the large plush chairs with a book in his hands.
“Hey! I
agreed to come cause you said you’d stop calling me a fucking dog!” I snap.
“I said I
would try to refrain from calling you a mutt,” says Kaiba smirking, “I never
said that I wouldn’t call you a puppy.”
I glare at
Kaiba. “Where’s Mokuba?”
“He’s
checking on dinner,” says Kaiba returning his eyes to his book, “You can sit,
puppy.”
“Why?”
“It’s
better than standing, isn’t it?” replies Kaiba eyeing me over the top of his
book.
I can’t see
it, but I can tell he’s smirking. “Jackass! I meant why you insist on calling
me a dog? Do you really get so much enjoyment out of degrading me like that?
I’m not a fucking mutt!”
Kaiba
mumbles something, but he says it so quietly that I don’t catch what it was, or
at least that’s what he thinks when I don’t respond to it. I have very good
hearing after all.
I raise an
eyebrow at the slight blush I see on Kaiba’s cheeks. “What was that?”
“I said
that you are a puppy,” says Kaiba.
“So you do
enjoy dehumanizing people.” I turn my back to Kaiba and stand in front of the
fire.
“You have
all the qualities of a puppy, and right now, you’re acting like I just took a
newspaper to your cute butt!” exclaims Kaiba.
“Cute?” I
ask turning to try to look at my butt to see what could be cute about it. I
spin myself in a complete circle, not once but three times.
Kaiba drops
his book to the floor and clutches his sides as he shakes with laughter.
“Chasing your tail, puppy?”
Shit. “I’m
not a god-damned dog!”
Kaiba just
continues to laugh as I glare at him. He has a very nice laugh.
“What’s so
funny?” asks Mokuba stepping into the living room.
“Our puppy
was chasing his tail!” exclaims Kaiba in between his chuckles at my expense.
Mokuba
starts giggling.
“Hey! Not
only am I not a dog, but I don’t belong to you, Kaiba!” I exclaim glaring at
him, “I am no one’s dog!” Not yet anyway.
Kaiba stops
laughing and turns his smile to me. He stands.
Oh,
Goddess, what a beautiful smile! Someone. Anyone. Help me. I’m melting!
Kaiba walks
towards me.
I take a
step back, then another and another. I feel the fire’s warmth getting closer.
Kaiba takes
another step towards me.
I take a
step backwards and the fire licks my leg. I yelp and leap forward, right into
Kaiba’s open arms.
Kaiba
smiles as he catches my gaze.
I push
myself away from Kaiba and fall to the floor. I scramble to my feet and rush
over to Mokuba’s side.
“You’re
funny, Joey!” exclaims Mokuba still chuckling, “It’s my turn to set the table,
so you play nice with my big brother, okay?”
My eyes
widen as my only source of protection scampers away.
“So how
straight are you, puppy?” asks Kaiba crossing the distance to stand right in
front of me in a matter of seconds.
“What?” I
freeze as I look into those suddenly blazing blue eyes. I can’t move away! Why
can’t I move away? I want to move away! … Don’t I?
“Are you
sure that you couldn’t be persuaded to change your way of thinking just a
little?” asks Kaiba reaching up one hand to gently caress my blonde hair.
“What are
you implying, Kaiba?” I ask gruffly.
“I’ve seen
the way you look at me when you think no one else can see,” says Kaiba, “I’ve
seen the things you try so desperately to hide, and I highly doubt you are as not
gay as you want us all to believe. So tell me. Explain it to me if you can.
How straight are you?”
Truth or
lie? Truth or lie? I’ve been lying so long; do I even know the truth?
“How straight am I? I could never be with a gay man. Bisexual maybe, but not
gay. It’s against everything I believe and feel. If I ever date someone,
or goddess forbid marry, it’s going to be with someone of the opposite
sex who understands who I am inside.”
“So you
wouldn’t even consider giving a man a chance?” Kaiba’s eyes turn hard as he
glares at me.
“What did I
just say? Or did you have problems understanding me?” I ask turning away from
Kaiba. He had problems understanding. I know that, but he doesn’t. If he knew
my secret, he’d understand. My words try to push him away, but is that what I
really want to do? Of course! I’m not gay! I don’t like him. I look over my
shoulder at Kaiba’s silence and catch a glimpse of the hurt in his cold eyes. I
don’t like him, so why does it tear my heart apart to see him hurting inside.
“I think…”
I turn
towards Kaiba quickly and pull him into my arms. He looks cute when he’s
surprised. I hold him tight against my body and whisper into his ear, “Maybe
I’m just a pathological liar who hasn’t spoken a word of truth in my life.”
Kaiba wraps
his arms around me and squeezes me tightly to him.
Mokuba
steps into the room and watches us for a moment before making his presence
known to us. “You two are so cute together! You should kiss him, big brother!”
My eyes
widen, and I push myself away from Kaiba before he gets the chance to follow
through on Mokuba’s suggestion, but, by goddess, it felt good to have been in
Kaiba’s arms! I’m still tingling! “Is dinner done?”
“Yep.”
Mokuba looks disappointed as if he wanted to see Kaiba kiss me.
I smile at
Mokuba. “Great!”
“Let’s go
feed our new puppy, Mokuba,” says Kaiba smirking at me.
“Bring on
the chow!” I exclaim. I’ll let the puppy comment slide for now.
