Dark Temptations Presents
A Wish of the Heart
@-->-->----
It was ten minutes to midnight on October 31st - the magical night of Halloween - and Kaiba was bored.
As always, the school's Halloween festival was nothing more than an excuse for the students to be as loud and childish as possible. Unfortunately, it was also mandatory for all students to attend it. So, Kaiba had resigned himself to waiting until the earliest time he could leave. In the meantime, he planned to mingle with the school board members he could see walking around the festival in a group. As he started towards them, though, he spotted a far more pleasurable way to spend his time.
A certain blonde male had just emerged from the fortune-teller's booth.
Since it was supposed to be a festival, why not engage in the pursuit of one of his favourite hobbies? With that in mind, Kaiba approached his target.
"Honestly, Wheeler, do you have any idea just how ridiculous you look?" He eyed the blonde's costume with disdain.
As far as he could tell, the other teen was supposed to be a Red Eyes Black Dragon. It was obvious that Wheeler hadn't had the money to hire a real costume, though, and so he'd tried - and failed dismally, in Kaiba's opinion - to make one himself. The cardboard he'd used was a little too flimsy to hold the shape though, and the paint job was woefully inadequate. The red and black paint had been watered down so much - no doubt to make them last because he had only been able to afford one tube of each colour - that they were really more deep pink and grey.
Kaiba, on the other hand, was dressed in an exquisite Blue Eyes White Dragon costume that he had ordered his tailor to make. Although it was made of material, every scale had been individually hand-dyed and sewn onto the skin-tight white body suit beneath it. It had taken the man three tries to get it right, but the realistic look of the costume was well worth the frustration Kaiba had felt with the man's incompetence.
Just because he didn't want to be there - there was no reason for him to look anything less than perfect.
Wheeler turned and scowled. "Get lost, Kaiba. Go find someone else to insult." He seemed to be a little distracted.
Annoyed that his entertainment was not responding with the usual hotheaded comebacks and one-liners, Kaiba tried again. "Are you supposed to be a dragon? You look more like some sort of large and unwieldy bird." He ignored the blonde's angry growl and sneered. "You should have stuck to the dog suit. It is perfect for a mutt like you."
Joey's growl became louder as he glared at the brunette. "What did you just call me?" His amber eyes flashed, darkening with rage.
Kaiba's lip curled up into a contemptuous smirk. Wheeler was so very predictable. "I called you what you are. A stupid mutt who does nothing but bark so much he annoys everyone."
Joey's eyes were now glaring so hard at Kaiba, they seemed to be blazing with fire. He turned around fully to face Kaiba and took a step forward. "I. Am. Not. A. Mutt." He said each word slowly and distinctly - even though he was speaking through gritted teeth.
Now thoroughly enjoying himself and immersed in his hobby of Wheeler-baiting, Kaiba felt invincible. After all, he had gone up against Wheeler many times in the past and the results were always the same. "Or you will do what? Every time you come up against me, the result is the same. You end up in crawling on your knees in the dirt... like the filthy dog you are." He almost purred out the last bit.
A sudden gust of wind whipped up from nowhere - surrounding the two adversaries in a whirling cloud of dust and leaves that sent all the other students in the area running in fear. As Kaiba looked around at the wind in shock, an eerie light came from in front of him. His head snapped around and he gasped at what he was seeing. "N...No!"
Something very strange was happening to Wheeler. His body was immersed in an ethereal red light that shimmered and pulsed with a steady beat that Kaiba seemed to feel echoing deep inside his heart. He stepped back as the light began to grow, but the whirling wind cut of his escape route. He could only watch in growing amazement as the light faded to reveal that the blonde teen who had been standing in front of him only seconds earlier had now taken on a new form.
Joey Wheeler was now a Red Eyes Black Dragon!
The dragon loomed over Kaiba and reached down, grabbing at his costume with his sharp talons.
Kaiba gasped as he was lifted off the ground. He dangled in the air - nose to snout with a creature that he had thought existed only as a drawing on a card and as a hologram in his own duelling system. "W...Wheeler! Put me down! What do you want? Why are you doing this? I said put me down!" He refused to show his fear.
The dragon growled and then spoke - the voice eerily similar to Wheeler's, but much deeper and with a growl to it. "What am I?"
For a second, Kaiba was confused. Then he understood. Fury engulfed him and he answered with far more rashness than he normally would have. "A mutt! A dog! A yapping puppy! That is all you will ever be!"
The dragon snarled and Kaiba could not keep from flinching at the hot, sulphur-scented breath that emerged with the sound. "No. I am a dragon. But it matters not what you think of me. You are nothing but an arrogant and spoiled child."
Even though most of his childhood fantasies had been left behind him when he was very young, Kaiba still often dreamed of meeting a dragon.
But he had never dreamed of being thrown across a tail and spanked by one!

Kaiba sat up in bed with a cry. He panted and looked wildly around - trying to see where the dragon had gone. It was several seconds before he realised that he was alone in his bedroom in the Kaiba mansion. He immediately fumbled for the switch to turn on his bedside lamp. The reassuring light came on, but it took another few seconds for his heart to stop racing and for him to remember two important facts.
He had already returned home from the stupid waste of time otherwise known as the school Halloween festival.
He had not seen Wheeler turn into a dragon and he had definitely not been spanked by him.
In fact, he had only seen Wheeler once all evening. He had caught sight of him helping the fortune-teller repair her stall, shortly before he'd gone to speak with the members of the school board. According to rumours he had heard later - some idiots had thrown drink cans at her stall and torn one of the fabric sides.
Definitely no dragon.
He really needed to stop having snacks before bed.
His dream had left him feeling restless. Kaiba decided he might as well get up, instead of just lying there tossing and turning. If he was not going to sleep, then he might as well get some work done.
As he slipped out of bed, his gaze happened to fall on the pool of material lying on the floor beside the bed - where he remembered discarding it before going in for his before-bed shower. He sighed. Although he doubted that he would ever wear the costume again, he had paid too much money to treat it so carelessly. He picked it up and began to fold it up - then went still as he realised what he was seeing.
The lower back of the costume - the part that covered his bottom - bore three long black scorch marks about the same size as the talons of the Red Eyes Black Dragon in his dream.
The clock began to chime midnight.

On the other side of town, a blonde teenager lay in the state somewhere between waking and sleep. He thought back over the night's fun and the special gift he had been given as a reward for helping a lady out when she had needed it.
'When your heart wishes strongly enough - your dream will come true.'
Joey Wheeler snuggled beneath his thin and ragged covers and smiled happily as he slipped into sleep - to dream of teaching Seto Kaiba a lesson and then flying on shadow-dark wings through a star strewn sky.

Elsewhere in the city of Domino, a lady in a flowing black dress and black ankle boots walked down a dark street - her work done for that night. The wind stirred her long black hair and the dim street lamps cast just enough light to make her eyes seem to dance like flickering red flames.
The mysterious fortune-teller lifted those eyes to the starlit sky and smiled.
"My thanks, Mr Wheeler. For both the help and the entertainment. You truly do have the heart of a dragon."
