“Class, I’d
like to introduce a new student.”
Yuugi’s attention snapped to the front of the class. He had just been idling,
gazing out of the window, stroking his Millennium Puzzle. Even though the
Puzzle held no spirit now, he couldn’t help but continue wearing it. To remind him,
that what had finished only a month ago, wasn’t some dream or elaborate
nightmare.
“Your new
classmate isn’t Japanese, and isn’t entirely fluent in the language yet, so
please take this into consideration when talking with them.”
Not Japanese? Yuugi frowned just a little, leaning forward in his chair. Both
of his small hands were still wrapped around the puzzle on his lap, stroking it
soothingly.
“Children, I’d like you to meet Nenet.” The teacher gestured towards the door,
which slid open slowly. A girl, only a little taller than Yuugi, stepped into
the room. Her skin was darker than most, and her hair was a dark, asian black.
As she turned to face the class, it even have a slightly blue shimmer to it, in
the light. Yuugi sat upright, his mouth hanging open a little as he gazed at
the girl. She was unmistakeably Egyptian. Even in her Japanese school uniform,
it was unmistakeable.
“Hello, everyone…” The girl, Nenet, spoke heavily accented Japanese. Her voice
was soft, however, and less shrill than Anzu’s. She
looked fragile, small. “My name is Nenet. My family moved here from Egypt only a month or two ago…”
A month or two. Yuugi felt an odd stab as his heart, and couldn’t resist
glancing into his lap to look at the Puzzle. Since Atemu left, the Puzzle had
been nothing but an elaborate necklace. There was no magic to it, not even a
hint of Atemu’s presence. The mind-link was, for as much as Yuugi had searched
for it, gone. Even sitting in class, his fingers tightened around the puzzle a
little.
Yami…
“Well, we hope you’ll feel welcome, then! Don’t we, class?”
The class gave a soft, communal murmur of approval. Yuugi glanced to the side,
and was surprised to see Jounouchi staring at him. He must have noticed how
hard Yuugi started holding the Puzzle, or maybe it was just a random glance.
Jou gave Yuugi a reassuring smile, and a stealthy thumbs-up under the desk. It
earned a small smile from the other boy, but he didn’t take his hands off the
Puzzle.
“Now, where to place you…” The teacher put one hand on her hips, frowning a bit
as she looked around the room. Finally, her gaze settled on Yuugi. Although he
looked visibly apprehensive, she gave him a big, commercial smile. “Aha, Motou!
I hear you speak some Egyptian, is that right?”
“Um… some, sensei.” Yuugi doubted ancient Egyptian would be understandable to a
modern Egyptian, and that was all he knew, through Yami. But he couldn’t really
tell the teacher that.
“Excellent! Nenet can sit next to you, then!”
“…” Yuugi
didn’t want the girl sitting next to him. He wasn’t sure why, but the idea
filled him with repulsion. Maybe he was just shy.
Regardless, the girl moved to take the empty desk to Yuugi’s right. The
left-hand desk was occupied by Jou, who peered around Yuugi at the girl,
curiously. She gave him a calm smile, and then turned that smile to Yuugi.
As her eyes met his, Yuugi felt himself freeze. Something about those eyes
chilled him to the bone. They were just normal dark eyes, Egyptian eyes, but to
him, there was a dark light behind those eyes that made him want to get up and
run. Unconsciously, his hands tightened around the Puzzle.
The girl’s eyes flicked down as his hands moved then widened. Leaning towards
him ever so slightly (Yuugi had to fight not to move away), she spoke in a low
voice as the teacher began talking again.
“You have a Millennium Item, little
Yuugi?”
A bolt of shock tore through the terror, as Yuugi gaped at her. She had spoken
Egyptian to him. The pronunciation was a little off, but it was ancient Egyptian.
One of his hands moved, stroking his fingers over the eye on the front of the
Puzzle. He didn’t dare answer in Egyptian, so he lowered his voice and spoke in
Japanese.
“How do you know about the Millennium Items?”
Nenet gave him a mysterious smile. To Yuugi’s horror, she reached over and
touched the Puzzle. But, as her fingers ghosted over the golden surface, her
smile faded. Drawing her hand back, she whispered desperately to Yuugi again,
once again in Egyptian.
“There is no spirit in this Item. How can
this be? What happened?”
Yuugi didn’t have time to marvel that she could know this from touching the
Puzzle. If he had been in his right mind, maybe he would’ve picked up on it,
but everything was happening so fast. This girl knew of the Millennium items,
and what’s more, she knew of the spirits captured in them! This could be… could
be…
“I-… there was a battle.” Yuugi was certain to keep his voice down, “A duel
monsters-… I mean… we played a Shadow Game.” It always felt strange to say it, Shadow Game. Yami no Yuugi. Destiny
really was annoying sometimes.
The girl’s eyebrows raised, surprise and eagerness on her face. She opened her
mouth to say something, when the teacher’s voice cut across their talking.
“Yuugi!”
The two looked forward at the teacher, slightly shocked. Both, apparently, had
almost forgotten they were in class. Yuugi knew he had.
“Although I’m
sure getting to know our new student is very appealing, I’d appreciate if you
waited until the break.”
The teacher’s words were soft, but her expression was fierce and threatening.
The threat was only detention, but her face said otherwise. Yuugi felt himself
mumble quietly and nod, shifting back into his seat. The strange girl, Nenet,
did the same; although the disappointment on her face was evident.
Yuugi’s mind was buzzing. This girl knew about the Puzzle, but was surprised
when she didn’t find Atemu inside it. It confused him. Anyone that was involved
with the Millennium Items, and the Shadow Games, surely would’ve known about
the prophecy? Yuugi felt himself frown, still caressing the Puzzle in his lap.
Fixing his eyes on the teacher, his attention stayed within his mind.
I wish Yami was here. He’d know who Nenet
is, he knows everything.
A prickle of sadness leaked into his thoughts, and Yuugi felt himself sag
slightly.
Beyond that… I just wish Yami was here.
---
Class seemed to drag on for the first ten minutes, until Yuugi got absorbed in
his work. Then, time flew by, until the bell finally rang for break. Stretching
his arms out in front of him, uncramping his hands,
Yuugi turned to question Nenet about the Puzzle, only to see the girl escaping
out of the door. Confused, he stood up slowly, gazing at the door. He had
assumed she would want an answer to her questions, but she’d just got up and
left. Before he had time to follow her, however, he felt a hand clamp down on
his shoulder.
“That new girl interestin’ to you, Yuug?”
Yuugi blinked, turning to see Jou looking at him with a grin. The blond glanced
at the door, then down to Yuugi again. “She was pretty unusual. Egyptian, too,
huh?” The grin dropped to a smile, and his eyes dropped to look at the Puzzle
briefly. “… You okay, Yuug?”
Yuugi stared at his friend blankly, then finally gave
a small smile. Shaking his head, he forced the smile bigger. “… She gave me a
shock. I haven’t seen another Egyptian person since… you know?” Better they
didn’t know. The memory of the instinctive fear the girl had inspired was still
heavy in his stomach, but he had no way to back it up. It was just an illogical
fear. The fact that she knew about the Millennium items, well…
“Ah well, don’t worry about that. I mean…” Releasing Yuugi’s shoulder, Jou
reached up and rubbed the back of his head roughly, “… Ya gotta
get used to how things are now, right?”
“I guess… but…” There was no harm in telling them. Yuugi dropped his voice, even though the classroom was mostly empty, “… Jou,
she knew about the Puzzle. She knows about the Millennium Items, which means
she has to know about the prophecy!”
Jou blinked at him, just staring for a moment, then
shaking his head, “That could be for any reason. I mean, legends are pretty
common, right?”
“I guess, but… she seemed surprised when there was no spirit in the Puzzle.”
Jou’s eyes widened, and his voice rose again; “She
knows about Yami?!”
“Shh-…!” Yuugi’s eyes widened, darting around the room; terrified that someone
had heard.
“So there’s something about the new girl that’s mixed up in the Shadow Games?”
Yuugi whirled around to find the source of the voice, Jou turning with him. Kaiba was standing next to the teacher’s desk, and had been
just out of sight from Yuugi and Jou. Jou cursed softly, but Yuugi stepped
forward. Better Kaiba than a normal member of the
class…
“I don’t think so… I mean, the prophecy’s over, right?
Ya-… Atemu’s gone.” Another squeeze of the Puzzle. “But she knew about it…”
“How did she know the Pharaoh’s spirit wasn’t there?”
Yuugi blinked at him. Then he looked down at the Puzzle. It was just as shiny
and pretty as always; it hadn’t changed at all from Atemu’s spirit departing.
Yuugi felt himself frown, then his eyes widened.
“She just--… she just touched it, and she knew…”
“Huh?” Jou looked back at Yuugi. He’d been glaring at Kaiba
the whole time, but now his attention was back. “She just had ta’ touch it?”
Yuugi gave a soft nod, and Kaiba made an annoyed
noise. The other two glanced at him, and Kaiba was
lifting his bag from the teacher’s desk. “I suggest you find out a bit more
about this Nenet girl. I have business to attend to.” He glanced at the other
two, briefly, then turned towards the door. “… Later, Yuugi. Mutt.”
“I’m not a-…!” Jou’s angry response fell on deaf ears
as the door slid shut behind Kaiba. Yuugi was staring
at the Puzzle. His eyes were large and shining, stroking his fingers over the
smooth surface of the Puzzle. For the hundredth time, he felt himself feel
around for his mind-link to Atemu, and found it gone. Not just dead, but nonexistent.
Sighing quietly, he leaned his butt back against the nearest desk.
“How did she know about Yami…”
Jou looked at him sharply, then his gaze softened.
Reaching up, he patted Yuugi’s shoulder lightly; “… Don’t get yer hopes up, Yuug. Just ‘cos
this girl knows something, doesn’t mean anythin’s gonna
happen.” His voice dropped a bit, “None of us are happy about it, but Yami’s gone.”
Yuugi felt a little stab of pain. He knew it, already, and he was trying to get
on with life. But…
I miss you, Yami…
“Yeah… I know, Jou. Thanks…” Smiling bravely, fighting the tears that were
clouding his vision, he didn’t look directly at his friend. “I’m… gonna stay
here and tidy up. My turn today. You better go, Shizuka’ll
be waiting for you.”
“Sure… be okay, Yuug. We’re worried about you.”
Another pat on the shoulder, and Jou had turned towards the door. The door had
only just slid shut when Yuugi collapsed to his knees.
Why did he have to go…
Why did he have to go!? Yami… mou hitori
no boku… I miss you. I miss you… Who’s that girl,
Nenet? How does she know about you? How? What’s going on? Yami…
Leaning to the side, Yuugi rested his shoulder against the wall. The tears
were coming thick and fast now, and he could hardly
see. It had been like this since Atemu left; he’d be fine for days at a time,
by forcing himself not to think of Yami. Then, something would happen, or he’d
see something, and the sorrow would all come pouring out. Jou and the rest didn’t
know about the crying, but they knew there was something wrong with Yuugi. When
he smiled, it was forced, or quick to depart; a cloud of depression was over
their friend, and nothing they could do would get rid of it.
Pulling
himself to his feet, Yuugi sniffed softly, and wiped his tears on his sleeve.
Setting down his bag, he reached up to begin cleaning off the board. He was
still crying, but it was slow, gentle tears now. Even in his mind, his voice
steadied.
… Hey, Yami… something funny happened
today. There was a girl at school, and she looked Egyptian, like you. She
reminded of me of you. Her eyes… she’s got these piercing eyes, like there’s
something not quite trustable there. Kinda like Kaiba’s,
but worse. She knew about the Millennium Items. What do you think I should do… ?
His thoughts went on in this way as Yuugi cleared up the classroom, and the
sun went down outside. Gradually, more and more students went home. The sun was
almost gone by the time Yuugi finally packed up and left the room.
Trailing home, Yuugi took a winding path through the city. Despite himself, he
almost smiled when the Game shop came into view. Pushing open the door, he
waved to his Grandpa. The old man was just closing up shop, and offered Yuugi a
small wave. Of all the people close to Yuugi, Soloman
Motou had been treating Yuugi’s depression the best. He just didn’t talk about
it, because Yuugi didn’t want to talk about it. He smiled and ignored it all.
Climbing to his room, Yuugi dumped his bag on the desk, shed his school jacket,
and collapsed on his bed. One hand came to curl around the Puzzle,
instinctively. Staring at the ceiling, Yuugi’s eyes closed as he resumed
stroking the Puzzle. It was a habit he’d picked up about a month after Atemu
disappeared. He still wore the Puzzle constantly, and had taken to fondling and
stroking it when he was upset, or anxious.
And anxious and upset were accurate for right now.
Hey, Yami… I know you still exist, even though you’re out of my reach… you have to…
