"I would have to say Evanescence." Ryou said; his mouth full of banana ice cream.
Malik frowned. "They were okay… but I think Breaking Benjamin was better."
Honda leaned back in his chair. "Evanescence was good when Seether came out and they did their song together."
Amidst all the chatter, Jounouchi Katsuya sat quietly sipping on his chocolate milkshake, observing the males sitting around him. Right now he was in a teenage crisis. There was his father to start with, who was a drunken idiot who brought home nothing but crates of Jim Beam and whores; his grades at school were slipping like none other; trying to quit smoking only made him more aggravated; and on top of all this, he had recently found himself checking out other guys… yep, he was bisexual. Or so he thought.
Most of his friends were sluts in themselves, save for Yuugi and perhaps Ryou. In a discussion between everyone except them, nobody, not even Malik - the biggest whore of them all - could picture either Yuugi or Ryou with someone, not even a girl.
Jou glanced quickly across the booth at Ryou - the metallic ivory-haired teen who never said much and was sweet to everyone who came his way. He looked pretty good tonight, in Jou's opinion. He seemed to have opened up to express himself a little more for the concert tonight. At school he was practically the only one that actually bothered to tuck in his school shirt and do up all the buttons. Tonight he must have been persuaded by his darker counterpart, Bakura, to wear something a little more conspicuous. He was wearing illegally low-cut jeans that bared his shallow hips that Jou couldn't help but notice, along with a fitting dark-green shirt that complemented his skin and hair, which was tied back into a ponytail.
Jounouchi couldn't really talk though. He himself looked like a punkish slut wearing dark black jeans, a black shirt, black leather bracelets with metal spikes on them, and dark kohl outlining his chocolate eyes. His mop of long, glistening flaxen hair looked ironic against the rest of his dark features, but he figured it looked good anyway, wild and untamed as it was.
"Jounou-kun? Hellooo?" Honda dragged out. "You brain-dead in there or something?"
Jou dazedly drifted back to reality. "Huh?"
"Malik asked you about that girl you were making out with during the break between shows." Yuugi said quietly.
"Oh, her." Jou muttered. "What's to know?"
"Well who is she for a start?" Otogi asked. "She was pretty fine."
Jou shrugged. "Some whore."
The others gazed uneasily at him. True, she was a beautiful girl, and probably without a doubt the most popular at her school, yet Jou completely dismissed like an annoying flea as soon as the concert was over. In truth, he only made-out with her to try and convince himself that he was only attracted to girls… but in vain.
"Err… okay." Otogi replied, a little hesitantly. "Well, I guess I should be heading off; work and school is gonna kick my ass tomorrow if I don't get up early enough."
"Yeah, me too." Malik agreed.
"I best be going too." Jou mumbled. "Uh, do you want a ride home, Ryou? Your house isn't far from mine."
Ryou nodded his head silently, smiling with gratitude. "Thanks, Jou."

Silence hung densely in the air as the two teens rolled up outside the 34-storey-high youth hostel that Ryou lived in, in the city. His apartment was on the 15th floor, and it was small and quite crammed. Most of the rooms - save for the bathroom and bedroom - were open-plan, flowing into each other without walls separating them. Ryou had claimed that it was one of the larger apartments in the hostel and that he was lucky enough to get it for himself without having to share with a roommate.
"Well, here we are." Jou stated as he shifted the car into neutral and pulled on the handbrake.
Ryou smiled meekly at him before unbuckling his seatbelt. "Thanks for dropping me home, Jou-kun."
"It's no problem." Jou replied.
"Would you like to come in for a while?"
The blond looked at the digital clock in his car. "It's nearly two o'clock. I better not."
Ryou nodded, accepting the declination. "Well, I'll see you Monday, then?"
"Yeah, I guess so." Jou said. "See you later."
Ryou smiled briefly before getting out of the car. "Thanks again."

Monday morning was horrible for Jounouchi. He had worked all Sunday at the local music store down in the mall (where Malik also worked), and had come home only to get into an argument with his father and have a Steinlager bottle hurtled across the room at him. It had smashed on the crown of Jou's head and had cut him, sending him into after-hours to receive seven painful black stitches on the back of his head beneath his hair.
He had driven to school on Monday morning, not being bothered to walk, with a can of energy drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other. The music blared as loud as the radio could withstand in attempt to awaken the groggy blond teen. He finally reached school, pulled into the student parking lot, grabbed his bag from the back seat and got out of the car. He locked the doors and made his way to the main entrance of the school.
"Hiya Jou!" Yuugi chirped cheerfully in seeing his friend walk into the corridor.
"Hi, Yuug'." Jou replied in monotone.
Concern flickered in Yuugi's dark violet eyes. He could always tell there was something wrong with people, especially Jounouchi. "What's wrong? You don't sound all that good…"
"Eh, it's nothin'." Jou lied, unlocking his locker and shoving his gym gear into it. "Just got into a bit of a rumble with Pops last night. Nothin' major."
Yuugi sighed and shook his head. "He really needs help, Jou. Have you thought about signing him up for Alcoholics Anonymous?"
"He needs more help than that, Yuug'." Jou replied, slamming his locker door shut. "He needs to go to God damn rehab."
Yuugi pursed his lips and went quiet, taking great interest in the floor. He knew Mr. Jounouchi had problems with alcohol and anger, but he never knew he took it out on his son. Yuugi himself had always grown up in a protective atmosphere, living with his Grandfather above the small Kame Game Shop that he owned. He always had everything - his Grandfather cared deeply for him; the business sales were booming and therefore neither of them ever went without. He had no idea of what living in hardship was even like.
He looked aloft at the depressed pair of brown eyes looking vacantly off to nowhere. He really had no idea what to say. "I… I gotta get to class, Jounou…"
Jou nodded understandingly. He didn't want Yuugi - or anyone else for that matter - to get caught up in his family affairs. "Alright Yug'. See ya `round."
Yuugi nodded and quickly scurried off down the hall toward his Shakai (1) classroom. Jounouchi let out a long breath and gathered his books for his Eigo (2) period - the second-to-most horrid subject of them all. After Suugaku (3), that is.

"The media covered the politician's erection scandal thoroughly." Jou said, attempting to translate a sentence put up on the board by his authentic and overly eccentric English teacher. The foreign words rolled weirdly off his tongue.
Ryou couldn't help but notice this fatal fault and snorted an embarrassingly loud laugh through his nose. All the students in the class either rolled their eyes or stared at him as if he just landed from Mars.
Because Ryou's first language was already English, he was assigned other assessments in more advanced English, including Old English style scripts like Shakespeare. He couldn't help but snicker under his breath at the idiotic ways the class attempted to put words together. Then again, English was the second hardest language to learn next to Chinese. He'd have to tell Jou about his mistake after class, if the teacher didn't.
"Is there a problem, Mr. Bakura?" The thin female teacher asked, directing her voice his way.
"No, miss. I just find it funny how Japanese students can't pronounce the consonant `L', properly yet." Ryou giggled.
The teacher sighed and rolled her blue eyes at him. "Just get on with your own work, Mr. Bakura."
Ryou could hardly contain himself.

It was lunchtime. A searing headache was revolving in Jou's head for the moment, so he declined Honda's request of playing rugby at lunchtime. It was cold and the grounds were wet and muddy, anyway. Currently, he was standing outside in the cold under the shelter of the science block having a cigarette and yet another energy drink in attempt to revitalize him. He wasn't too worried about whether a patrolling teacher saw him or not; during winter they didn't often bother going on lunch-time duty and the science block was the least likely spot to be caught.
"Hi Jounou! What are you doing all the way out here?"
Jou turned in hearing a feather-soft, accented voice; namely, Ryou's. He smiled down at the white-haired teen standing next to him. Ryou shuffled closer to the shivering blond in attempt to warm himself against the chilly air. He noticed some dried blood still clinging to the strands of Jou's blond hair and immediately an anxious look washed over his features.
"What happened to your head?" He asked.
"Dad just got a bit drunk the other night." Jou replied. "I got a few stitches; nothing to worry about."
Ryou looked skeptical. "Jou… that's abuse."
Jou took another drag of his cigarette. "You think I don't know that? What can I do? Honestly… he's the only person I've got, besides Shizuka."
"What about your mother? You could go and live with her for a while." Ryou suggested. "I mean I know you don't like her all that much but at least she wouldn't…you know…"
Jou let out a small, sarcastic chuckle. "I'd sooner get a sex change than move in with her."
Ryou glanced up and giggled slightly at Jou's choice of words. "When was the last time you saw her?"
Jou put his free hand in his pocket. "Not last Christmas but the one before." He said. "My parents have turns at having us… except Mom doesn't let Shizuka see Dad - ever."
"Oh…" Ryou said. "So you'll be spending this Christmas with her, right?"
"I don't want to." He replied. "Ryou, this is the last year of school for me, and I may be stupid, but not stupid enough to know that my grades won't get me into college. I've been thinking about what I'm gonna do… and believe me, there aren't many options."
"I see… But that's in the long-run, Jou. What about now, just temporarily? You can't keep letting your father do this to you." Ryou said.
Jou shrugged. "I can tolerate it for a little while…"
"I hate seeing you like this…" Ryou said quietly. "But you know, if you ever feel like you just to get out of there, then you can stay with me. At least you'll be safe until you know what you're doing."
This startled Jou. Sure, Ryou was nice… but now he was being too generous. Even Yuugi probably wouldn't let him stay with him due to his Grandfather's strict policy about his friends staying over due to theft of stock from the shop downstairs. He creased his brow in confusion and turned to look at the shorter boy standing next to him.
"I can't do that Ryou… Your youth hostel wouldn't allow it for starters." Jou muttered, stubbing his cigarette butt out on the wet concrete.
The snowy-haired boy shook his head. "My father bought that apartment for me that I'm living in at the moment - it's not rented. You can stay there as long as you like… but you'd have to pay a small board fee, of course."
Jou stood silently, processing all the thoughts and options filtering through his head. He didn't really want to intrude on Ryou's life, knowing how the boy valued his privacy and his own space. Then again, if he was offering Jou a place to stay temporarily then… he might as well take him up on the offer.
"Thanks, Ry. You're a real pal." Jou said with an honest smile of appreciation.
Ryou smiled. "So are you, Jounou-kun. Have a think about it anyway, won't you?"
"Yeah, `course. See ya round Ryou." With that said, Jou bid him goodbye and went on his way to his Suugaku class, and the hellish lesson that awaited him.
