Yay, I'm back. Only with a cute little one shot this time, but am working on the next. Not sure about time frame for that it really depends how busy I am at work. ^_^
Huge thankies for all the reviews for my other fic. *big hugs to you all* Because of you I haven't been able to let this story go yet. Anyway enjoy! “Go home Joey!” Yugi told him firmly. “You shouldn’t be here when you’re like this.” Joey was lying flat out across his desk, afraid that if he sat up the room would start spinning again. He closed his eyes against the imploring look that Yugi was giving him. “Honestly Jou, I don’t know why you even bothered to come in at all.” he said patting his shoulder gently. “You should have just stayed in bed.” Joey groaned. He knew all this already, he knew he really ought to be resting at home but he had to be here today, he needed to be. “You don’t understand…” He lifted his head up slightly, only to let it fall back down again when the dizziness hit him. “I can’t.” “But he’s not even in today! You should just go home.” “He’ll be here later. I just have to make it till this afternoon…I’ll be fine.” He gave Yugi a weak smile, who merely looked back with concern. “Whatever you say Joey” sighed Yugi and against his better judgement left the sick blonde to return to his own seat. Joey watched him go before burying his head in his arms. He knew the other was worried about him and any other day he would have listened and gone home. But not today. Today was different. Nothing was gonna stop him from being here, not Yugi, not his friends, not this stupid little cold, which yesterday had barely been so much as a sniffle but had managed to hijack his whole body through the course of one night. Why did this have to happen now? Couldn’t it have just held off for one day? If only he hadn’t made such a fuss, then he could go home without feeling guilty. After all Kaiba had said that it wasn’t a big deal. He winced inwardly as he remembered the conversation they had had yesterday. “Seriously Wheeler, forget about it. It’s really not that important.” “How can you say that? Or course it is!” said Joey outraged at the brunets indifferent attitude at something he wouldn’t dream of missing. “Promise me you’ll come in tomorrow.” “Why can’t you just come over to mine after school?” “Cos I’ve got my part time job tomorrow…I can’t. So you have to come…please.” He grabbed onto Kaiba’s jacket, giving his best puppy dog eyes. Looking away Kaiba frowned in irritation. “Then don’t worry about it. It really doesn’t matter…” “But Seto!” Jou exclaimed, finally getting Kaiba to lock eyes with him. “Promise me.” As Joey gazed up at Kaiba, he could see the other beginning to crack. As soon as Kaiba sighed, closing his eyes, Joey knew that he had won. “Fine…” Joey’s face lit up when Kaiba finally conceded. “…but I’ve got a meeting in the morning, so I’ll…” He couldn’t wait for Kaiba to finish before he reached up and wrapped his arms around Kaiba’s neck. “…be late.” “I don’t care, as long as you come in.” he said smiling. “Stupid Mutt.” chided Kaiba, patting him lightly on the back of the head. So after all that there was no way that he could not be here, he’d never hear the end of it if he went home now. They had been together for about three weeks now and things really hadn’t changed that much between them. They still didn’t hang out that much at school, they still just about managed to stay civil to one another. It was only when they were alone, in those few moments of passion they shared that he knew that things were different. He knew it that first morning when he had woken up in Kaiba’s mansion. It was an unusual feeling waking up with another’s arms around you but it was one that Joey had quickly become accustomed to. He now yearned for the nights that he got to spend at Kaiba’s place. Only after the awkwardness of the first time that is. On his first morning of staying there as Kaiba’s boyfriend, it was only under the condition that he explained to Mokuba why he was there. Course this had been easier said than done. He had struggled with the words for about five minutes before Kaiba took pity on him and told his brother himself that the two of them were dating. The younger Kaiba merely looked between the two of them before saying “OK” and left for his room. Jou wasn’t sure if that meant he was ok with it or what but it seemed good enough for Kaiba so it was good enough for him too. So now it was only Mokuba and Yugi that knew about them being together and Joey was going to make sure it stayed that way. The pounding his is head dragged him back to the present. It had started as soon as he got up that morning and had been steadily getting worse when the bell rang. He hoped and prayed that their teacher would just leave him alone, not that he had ever done before, but hey even as sucky as this day was going Joey was ever the optimist. However he was forced to groan again when the footsteps, which undoubtedly belonged to Mr Naruse, stopped by his desk. “Mr Wheeler how many times do I have to tell you not to sleep during my lesson?” Man this really wasn’t his day. Taking a unusual enormous amount of effort Joey lifted his head off of the desk and sat back in his chair. “Sorry Sir.” “Oh my God, Joey!” A horrified look crossed Naruse face as he saw the state that Jou was in. “Are you alright? Do you need to go home?” “No! I can’t…I’ll be fine.” Wait a minute, surely there was only one Mr Naruse. “But you really don’t look good. You should at least go to the nurse’s room and lie down for a while.” “Yeah…I think…I’ll do that…” Now he remembered standing up, that much is certain, but after that he wasn’t too sure. After hauling himself to his feet Joey promptly took one step forward before everything went black. ===@=== Slowly coming to Jou realised he was moving, now something about that just wasn’t right. Opening his eyes he found himself in a car. Moaning he sat himself up and looked out the window, staring in confusion at all the houses going by. Glancing to the side he half expected to see Kaiba there but he couldn’t hold back the disappointment when he saw Ohana in the driver’s seat. “Oh, you’re awake then.” She said obviously catching his movement out of the corner of her eye has she watched the road. “Ah…what’s going on?” Joey groaned rubbing his eyes. “I’m taking you home.” “What!? No! I can’t go home.” “You collapsed in the middle of class Wheeler! You’re going home.” Risa replied in a way that was not up for discussion. “You need to go back to bed and sleep…oh and…drink lots of fluids. That’s right isn’t it? Although how you’re gonna to do that when you’re supposed to be sleeping is beyond me…” She muttered to herself. “…but is it lots of fluids though? Or was that for something else? And what about food…” Joey let her continue with the conversation she was having with herself while he went back to staring listlessly out the window. “What ever it is you felt you had to do today, I’m sure Seto will understand that you’re sick.” And deep down Joey knew that too. Not even Kaiba, unreasonable as he was, would be angry with him from being sick. Still that didn’t stop Joey feeling bad about it. Once they reached Joey’s apartment, Risa helped him inside and made sure he went to bed straight away. Getting some medicine for him to take and plenty water for him to drink, Ohana sat by his bedside, fretting whether she should leave or not. “I just don’t feel right leaving a sick person alone.” She said. “I don’t know about you but it makes me feel really lonely.” “It’s fine.” Joey croaked out. “I’ll be asleep any way so…” “But still…it’s not…only if you’re sure it’s ok.” Joey nodded so Risa got up, “I’m sure you’re friends will be over later to check on you. Feel better Joey.” Now alone Joey truly felt how ill he was. To be honest he had no idea how he managed to make to so far through the day that he had. It was a miracle really. No doubt Kaiba wouldn’t appreciate it. He wondered if the other had even made it to school yet or if he even bothered to at all. The last thought that flitted across his mind before sleep took him was how much he wanted the brunet there. Risa was right, it sucked being alone and sick. ===@=== Yugi was sitting in their fairly empty classroom, waiting for lunchtime to come to an end, flicking through his duel monsters deck, when he became aware of a large shadow looming over him. Turning his gaze upwards, he was welcomed with the scowling face of Seto Kaiba. “Hey Kaiba.” He greeted in the usual cheerful manner. “Didn’t expect to see you in today.” “Where is it?” Kaiba demanded, not even acknowledging Yugi’s hello. Being far too used to Kaiba’s attitude by now Yugi just brushed the surly tone off. “What? Where’s what?” Yugi asked innocently. Watching in slight trepidations as Kaiba’s look became more sour, as if Yugi was keeping the information from him on purpose. Which really wasn’t the case, Yugi had no idea what Kaiba was talking about. Taking a deep sigh Kaiba repeated himself slowly and deliberately. “Where…is…it?” Yugi started to think what the hell Kaiba would be asking him about and then it hit him. “Oh…” He was asking where Joey was. Honestly couldn’t he just ask normally, it wasn’t like there were that many people in here. “If you’re asking after Joey you could have just said.” Oops, maybe he shouldn’t have said that. Kaiba’s eyes narrowed and a suppressed growl sounded in his throat. So Yugi decided, quite wisely he thought, to just give the CEO what he was after. “I’m sorry to tell you this but he’s not here. He went home.” “He went home?” Kaiba questioned in a quiet voice to which Yugi nodded. “I knew I shouldn’t have bothered to come in. That stupid Mutt!” Kaiba turns to leave, still ranting to himself. “Wasting my time…after all that fuss he made.” “Hey wait Kaiba!” Yugi called out to the departing brunet. “Joey couldn’t help it. He had to go home, he’s sick.” “Sick?” “Yeah, he shouldn’t have come into school at all really but he insisted on being here, for what ever reason. It wasn’t until he collapsed during homeroom that Miss Ohana took him home.” Kaiba turned back suddenly, unintentionally knocking Yugi back slightly. “He collapsed?” “I think it was a case of exhaustion more than anything. Ohana said he’s fine now.” Yugi explained hurriedly, fighting back a smile at what could almost be described as worry showed on Kaiba’s face. It didn’t last look before it was replaced with irritation as he groaned. “He really is a complete idiot.” And without further comment he strolled off, leaving Yugi to wonder if Kaiba knew how human he looked just then. ===@=== “Achoo!” Was the only sound that echoed through the empty apartment. A sound emanating from a blond teen, curled up in bed, willing himself to get better. “Achoo!” Joey sneezed again, burying himself further under his covers. Man he didn’t think he had ever felt as bad as he did now. There was no way now that he would be able to see Kaiba today, not with this cold, which was looking more and more like the flu, it was pretty much shaping up to be the worst day ever. Ohana had left over an hour ago and despite taking the medicine, drinking lots of fluids and resting like she told him to do, he didn’t feel any better. And he guessed being all alone didn’t help either. Living on his as he did had lots of advantages but this was one disadvantage that hadn’t even crossed his mind. He had never been on his own and sick before and he was not enjoying his first experience of it. Not only that but it just had to be during a school day too, so it wasn’t like he could call anybody. His friends wouldn’t be out for at least another hour or so. His mind briefly went to Kaiba’s mobile number that the brunet had given him but that thought was quickly pushed aside as he remembered what happened the last time he had phoned Kaiba’s mobile. How the hell was he supposed to know that Kaiba would be in the middle of a meeting? It wasn’t like he had a copy of the CEO’s schedule. Joey cringed in spite of himself at the memory of the brunet’s angry voice, although you would have thought that he would be used to it by now and vowed never to phone him again, unless Kaiba expressively told him to. He was just setting down to try to sleep again when there came a knock at the door. He thought about ignoring it, thinking that he probably wouldn’t be able to make it to the door anyway but as the knocking persisted he steeled himself and managed to get up. Fighting down the waves of dizziness, Jou staggered to the door opening it. Standing on the other side was Seto Kaiba, wearing a very disgruntled expression, carrying a basket of fruit and his ever present briefcase. Joey stood there dumbfounded for a moment, thinking his fever had gotten so bad he was starting to see things. “You look like crap Wheeler.” Oh yeah it was Kaiba alright, why was he so keen to see him again? Not having the energy to fight with him today Joey merely stepped aside to let him in. “That’s what happens when you get sick.” He muttered as Kaiba passed him. “Oh I know that.” Kaiba started and Joey could tell by his tone that he wasn’t very happy. Joey lowered his head against the verbal onslaught that he knew was coming. “But it seems that you don’t.” Putting the basket down Kaiba strolled purposefully towards him, lifting his chin to get a good look at his face. “You went to school like this didn’t you?” Joey couldn’t help but advert his eyes from Kaiba’s intense blue ones. “You really are such an idiot. Look at you! You’re in no condition to be anywhere today. I’m sure you found that out for yourself when you collapsed! All over something I told you isn’t that important.” “But it is.” He mumbled. “No it’s not!” Kaiba pulled Joey closer to him, forcing him to look him in the eye. “You’re…” He stopped abruptly, a mixture of shock and concern on his face. He moved his hand up to rest against Joey’s forehead. “Jesus Joey! You’re burning up! You should be in bed.” Jou just didn’t have it in him to complain that he was only up to answer the door as Kaiba dragged him back to his bedroom. “Lie down.” He said simply, before leaving again. Joey did has he was told, collapsing back into bed, he waited patiently for the brunet to return. He really didn’t think it was very fair for him to be yelled at. He was sick after all. Weren’t you supposed to be all nice and sympathetic to a person who was ill? Especially if that person was your boyfriend. Then again did Kaiba know how to be sympathetic? Probably not. Although thinking about it Kaiba was only angry at him for doing something stupid, which Joey had to admit coming to school like this was pretty dumb. Kaiba probably just didn’t want him to hurt himself, like a parent berating a naughty child. This meant that Kaiba was worried about him. Looking at it that way made him feel a lot better about being shouted at. A small smile started to pull at his lips as he thought about this fact. Unfortunately this was swiped quickly off by a cold wet cloth hitting him in the face. “What are you so happy about?” Kaiba’s voice sounded from somewhere beside him. Lost in his happy musing Joey had failed to hear the CEO returning. Finally losing his temper, in spite of how tired he felt, Joey grabbed the wash cloth from his face and sat up intending to get Kaiba an earful. All he ended up doing however was giving himself a coughing fit. After regarding him for a while, Kaiba handed him a glass of water that was resting on Joey’s night stand. Taking the water gratefully Joey gulped it down replacing it on the table once again when he’d finished. “There.” Kaiba said patting him on the head. “Now be a good boy and lie down.” Joey began to growl low in his throat at the condescending tone in Kaiba’s voice, but before he could cause another coughing fit the other teen calmly prodded him in the forehead with his index finger, sending him sprawling back onto the mattress again. Taking a deep sigh Joey lay on his back staring at the ceiling. He hated feeling this weak. He felt the mattress dip to the side of him and the cool cloth placed back over his forehead. Glancing to the side he saw that Kaiba was sat on his bed next to him, brushing the hair out from under the cloth. “I’ll get you some more water.” Rising again Kaiba left the room. It was weird having him here looking after him. Part of him didn’t like it, didn’t like that Kaiba was seeing him at his worse but he couldn’t deny how much better it was having someone here. Who’d have thought that Kaiba’s warm and caring side would ever be directed at him? He only wished he got the chance to return the favour someday. “Oh shit.” Jou said out loud as he remembered what today was. All that fuss he’d made and here he was forgetting about it. Sitting up again he rummaged through his bag that he had left beside his bed. Finding what he was looking for, he settled back down again and waited for Kaiba to return. He didn’t have long to wait before the brunet was back, carrying the promised glass of water. “I’m sorry.” Jou said when Kaiba placed the glass down for him. “Huh? What are you apologising for?” “For making you take care of me today.” Sighing Kaiba rubbed a hand over his face. “Listen Wheeler…firstly, you’re not making me do anything, I chose to be here and secondly how many times you I have to tell you? It…Does…Not…Matter.” “Even so…” Joey sat up slightly, “…Happy birthday Seto.” He said holding out a small parcel to the other teen. Kaiba took the present from him, looking it over. “I know it’s not much but when it came down to it, you’re a really really hard person to buy for. I mean, you like have everything! So I really didn’t have a clue what to get you and…” While Joey was rambling to himself Kaiba had opened his gift to reveal a blue eyes key charm. Kaiba lifted it out of the box to examine it more closely. “I know it’s a stupid little thing really but I saw it and thought of you. I’m sure you’re far more used to getting big extravagant gifts but I don’t…” Jou was cut off from his verbal tirade by Kaiba’s hand against his mouth. “Shut it Wheeler. You’re blabbering.” “Sorry.” He mumbled when Kaiba took his hand away. “It’s a pretty stupid present huh?” Kaiba didn’t respond for the moment, he merely picked up his briefcase and attached the charm to the handle. Ever since he heard from Kaiba that he never really celebrated his birthday, Joey had wanted to do something special for it this year. It helped that because of Ohana asking about their star signs that he knew exactly when it was. Although things did not turn out how he wanted, first having to work that night and now being ill on the day. It looked like it just wasn’t meant to be. “No.” He replied firmly. “It’s not.” Leaning forward Kaiba’s lips just brushed over Joey’s before the blonde pulled back a little. “You’ll get my cold.” “I’ll risk it.” Kaiba said closing the gap the blond had made, taking Jou’s lips with his own. Joey couldn’t help but moan as he let the brunet kiss him. As he’s eyes drifted shut all worries about Kaiba’s health went quickly out the window. This was by far the best medicine he had taken all day. Being kissed by Kaiba always made him feel good and now was no exception. Breaking away again but still staying close, Kaiba moved his hands down to rest on Jou’s shoulders. “Thank you for my present puppy.” He said seductively pushing Jou down onto his back. Bringing his face close to Joey’s, Kaiba didn’t stop until their noses were almost touching. “Now get some rest.” And that was it; he was gone so abruptly from Joey’s personal space that all the blond could do was blink in confusion. “Huh?” “Go to sleep Joey.” Kaiba replied in his usual demeanour. “Are you going to go now?” He asked trying not to sound too pathetic and needy. “Why? Do you want me for something?” “Not really.” Joey said burying himself under his covers, protecting himself from the rejection he was sure to receive at what he was about to ask. “But…um…would you…hold my hand for a bit?” Jou let his hand peek out from beneath his covers. He kept his head buried unable to look at the CEO right now, knowing that there was no way he would comply with his request. “You know…just till I fall asleep.” He wasn’t going to do it, he just knew it. There was no way. Jou was gonna pull his hand back when Kaiba’s long cool fingers clasped his own. “Just till you fall asleep.” Kaiba stated firmly. Jou nodded, even knowing that Kaiba probably couldn’t see him, a smile spreading across his face. Joey could feel his eyes drooping and before he knew it he had drifted off to sleep, his tight grip on Kaiba’s hand loosening. As Joey slowly slipped off into the world of dreams, Kaiba sat by his bedside continuing to hold the blonde’s hand in his own. Staring down at the unconscious teen before him Kaiba inwardly groaned at himself for what he was about to do. Taking out his mobile, he phoned home. “Mokuba…I don’t think I’ll be making it home tonight.” END PLZ R & R More on the way. ;PWhile AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
