14th like everybody else. February 15th, on the
other hand…
February 15th
Valentine’s Day wasn’t all that
bad. Well, it usually wasn’t all that good either, but that was only in
reflection. In truth, Jou thought, February 14th was an okay
day. He could get into the spirit. He’d dig his single pink shirt
out of the back of the closet (it had been white once, until he’d washed it
with his only red shirt) and he’d wear his boxers with the little red hearts on
them. He’d go to school with dumb kid cards for his friends, and they’d
return the favor. They’d giggle like idiots at the lunch table over the
messages on candy hearts.
He didn’t even mind so much being a
third, or fifth, wheel. Everybody in their group was paired up; even Tea
had found a boy to buy her pretty things and kiss her on weekends. There
was a lot of cooing on Valentine’s Day, but Jou survived that. Their
group was big enough that there was always somebody to talk to when the others
were sucking face.
Besides, Valentine’s Day was full of
hope. Even if he didn’t have anybody, there was that secret fantasy that
maybe this year some secret admirer would make themselves known.
Even if it wasn’t somebody he’d ever consider dating, the sentiment alone would
be nice.
An optimist at heart, he’d been full
of cheer all day. No special presents arrived on his desk from mysterious
senders, but he had chocolates and candies from his friends. His locker
was devoid of any secret messages, but the day wasn’t over yet.
They all went out after school, for
a short break as a group before everybody split off into couples to
celebrate. Jou knew his pattern was pretty predictable, so anybody who
felt the need to would be able to track him down. So even when they left
school, he still held out for that sign, that valentine that would make the day
worth it.
Slowly, his friends split away,
until it became obvious that the ones remaining were doing so because they
didn’t want him to feel abandoned. Not wanting to spoil everybody else’s
fun, Jou made his excuses.
But he did not go home.
He wandered; the park, the arcade,
the coffee shop. All were common hang outs, places where somebody seeking
him might think to look. He lingered at each, attempting to take up the
whole evening. He stopped in for a sandwich at the local diner, and did
his best to focus on his food. He was absolutely surrounded by dining
couples, and though they didn’t bother him, the last thing he wanted to see was
one of them looking at his solitary self with pity.
It grew dark quickly, and he turned
in the general direction of home. February evenings were chilly, and he
found himself picking up his pace even if he wanted to prolong the wait.
He held his breath getting the mail,
then again at the door, and once more walking into his room. Eventually,
though, his lungs required oxygen.
Still, the day wasn’t over. He
took a shower, did his homework, killed brain cells in front of the computer,
pretty much anything he could find that would waste time and keep him from
thinking too much.
Looking down at the computer clock,
he read the time; 12:13. Valentine’s Day hadn’t been so bad.
February 15th, however,
was a very bad day.
He swore, and smashed a palm into
the keyboard just to record his frustration. The corresponding gibberish
displayed on the screen blinked dispassionately back at him. He never
minded starting Valentine’s Day alone, but only because he annually held out
hope that he would not end it that way.
But the cursed holiday had arrived
and already hightailed it out, and he had nothing to
show for it but cheap chocolate and stale candy hearts.
Not wanting to destroy valuable
hardware, he moved away from his computer and to his bed. There, he
proceeded to literally beat the stuffing out of an innocent pillow. Feeling
relatively relieved but still craving some kind of vengeance against cupid and
his holiday, he pulled out a Sharpie and wrote obscene words on his candy
hearts.
Eventually, FU, BLO ME, and HND JOB
lost their appeal – there were not many things he could think of to actually
fit on the hearts. Collapsing back onto his bed, still fully dressed and
not giving a damn, he allowed himself a guilty moment of fantasy.
He would walk into school and a
Post-It note would be in his locker, with nothing on it but a heart drawn in
red ink. Throughout the day, he’d discover these notes all over, and
slowly, they’d show a message in the heart. At the end of the day, his
last note, again in his locker, would have a time and place.
This place wouldn’t be the solution –
that would be much too easy. Once outside of school and away from prying
eyes, the scavenger hunt would begin. Each clue would be a gift in
itself. Flowers, good chocolate, candy hearts that weren’t stale (though
Jou was beginning to give this aspect up as utterly impossible; he doubted
their existence).
But the ultimate prize would be the
person waiting at the end. It didn’t even matter who it was, Jou
thought. Just as long as he was a he.
And he’d have to be tall. Probably dark haired, too.
And with blue eyes like deep pools.
Jou shook himself, thinking he was
much too sober to ride that train of thought. Grabbing his abused pillow,
he half-heartedly attempted to smother himself with it, just to escape the
torture that was February 15th.
Another wasted Valentine’s
Day. Still, there was always next year.
