It's an idea I've had for a long time. Multi-chapter.
A thank you to my beta for your thoughts. And a BIG THANK YOU to the_lost_ogg for the bouncing of ideas; this wouldn't be half as good without you! This hasn't been read through for grammar-, spelling and other stupid mistakes, so those might be laying around in wait to pounce on you, do not hesitate to point them out! Which is also why it might change a bit with time as I have time to correct what I find myself. HAPPY NEW YEARS, DON'T DO ANYTHING I WOULDN'T HAVE DONE... ;)New Years 08/09 Jou looked around the room as he walked in behind his father. He barely held back a gasp as he took in the magnitude of the room. Everything practically oozed elegance and power. He could see why his father wanted to mingle with the kind of people who could put on a display like this. It didn’t, however, make him want to be there any more. He was still seething from the conversation he had had earlier that day. His father had called him to his office, wanting a chat with his son. His father had talked a lot about their corporation, the market, the finance-crises that seemed to be happening as often as bad blockbusters, competition, how to survive in the business-world, networking and the future. A lot about the future. Then he had started talking about Jou’s ‘exploits’, as he liked to call them, how he had saved Jou’s ass over and over again from the press, managing to stress quite heavily how deeply indebted Jou was to him and how many problems his youthful, and in his fathers eyes, wilful, confusion had brought with it. As Jou was already fully aware of, his father didn’t approve of his bisexuality, and he couldn’t help but think scathingly about how other people’s, insert cough here, ‘exploits’ with secretaries were handled as if they were everyday occurrences, but him going on an innocent date with a friend, that was world war-class material. So he was quite surprised when he realized what his father’s real motives were. Apparently there was a very successful CEO, Kaiba, who was bisexual as well. Jou had known of Kaiba Corp, it was after all one of the biggest companies in the country, and a relative super-power in its own right, but not about the sexual preference of the head of it, and couldn’t help but wonder why that was suddenly relevant. Turned out that this Kaiba held an annual New Years-gathering, and that anybody who was anybody were attending every year, building liaisons, networking and bringing along their children, hoping and betting to strengthen said liaisons via marriage. Marrying off their sons and daughters to powerful people, or their heirs. But the prize above them all was Kaiba, and Kaiba being bisexual only widened the field of potential spouses. Which was what his own father had planned as well. He was being auctioned off like a horse. His father wanted him to use his homosexual wiles to hook Kaiba, and so, his company. Jou hadn’t been able to keep his mouth shut. With a false calm voice he had asked, “Why now? You’ve known about my preferences for five years?” “Yes, but I had to wait until you were 18. Wear something that makes you look good, get your secretary to help.” Jou felt like he was practically grasping for straws inside his own heads. His outrage, all the reasons for his outrage, they were all flying around inside his head, each one bright and sparkly with anger, but when he tried to vocalize them, he just ended up making intelligible noises, starting and ending sentences until something finally came out. “What if I had plans, you didn’t even ask! I’ve got my own life, I have plans to keep, people I have made promises to, I can’t just cancel on them!” He regretted what he had said right away. Not because it wasn’t one of the reasons he was angry, but because it wasn’t nearly the main reason for his anger. “Not relevant or even slightly important, Jounouchi. This is important, you have responsibilities to this company, to me! This is not up for debate. Make sure to wear a suit and get your hair cut.” With that Jounouchi senior had turned in his chair, wordlessly dismissing his fuming son. Jou would have none of that. His famous temper had taken over and he had once again entered a yelling-match with his father, explaining to the elder man in very loud colourful words exactly what he thought of this idea. His father had answered in just as loud, if less colourful, words and explained how if Jou wouldn’t or couldn’t step up, then he guessed he would just have to bring Shizuka to the party as his escort instead. That had quickly shut Jou up. There was no way he would allow his father to bring his goddamn 14 years old sister into this. Jou had practically stomped out of there, but it had made no difference. He was going to the New Years-thing. His skin was crawling at the thought. His father was practically trying to pimp him off to some old rich guy, who, if the rumours were true, was quite an asshole, an icy man who had little tolerance or patience with failure, a harsh but fair employer, a ruthless negotiator and apparently immune to all the young flesh his peers had been throwing at him since the parties began three years ago. Despite the last part, Jou had a picture in his head of an old fat man with young bimbos and guys on each hand and a fat cigar smoking in his mouth. Goody goody, what a catch. He followed after his father, his bad mood getting worse with e very step. But he brightened a bit when he caught sight of his friends as he passed the buffet-table, Yuugi’s hair stood out in a crowd of suits like this, and gave a slight wave, wordlessly promising to come by afterwards. When his father stopped at yet another circle of talking men and women, Jou stopped as well. Okay. He had promised himself that he wouldn’t actively try to get (seduce, hook, flirt with, charm, whore himself out to) the man, but he wouldn’t try to shove him away either. He separated himself from the situation. Thought of everything else but this moment. He looked anywhere else but where Kaiba stood, but impoliteness has a limit and in the end directed his gaze at the man. But he didn’t really see Kaiba, he kept everything fuzzy and unfocused as he stared ahead, focusing on the draping behind the man. He noticed that the shape of the other was surprisingly taller and leaner than he had expected. He found himself focusing despite himself and really saw the infamous Kaiba. He kept his face neutral by sheer will-force, because he had been really close to dropping his jaw. Kaiba looked no older than 22, looking striking, cold, powerful and .... and... really, really hot. A brunet with hair perfectly styled, yet did not look sleeked with the most expensive motor-oil around like fashion demanded these days, incredibly blue blue eyes, a good 190 tall, maybe more, and fit underneath a perfectly tailored suit. What the hell? He had thought he was being put up to seducing an old fat CEO, this guy was young and sexy and.. young! He could have whoever he wanted. Maybe this wouldn’t be such a bad idea after all, at least the sex would be fantastic. And then Kaiba opened his mouth, and all possibilities went right out the window. There was no way in hell he could do anything with a guy with an attitude like this, he’d probably end up beating the guy to a pulp within 5 minutes. He hadn’t even known it was physically possible to have that superior an attitude without floating up under the ceiling/into the air or at the very least look a bit bloated. When his father introduced himself and Jou he was careful to zone out but keep his gaze on Kaiba, to bow and remain as quiet and unnoticeable as possible. He had made up his mind. He wouldn’t even try to charm the guy. No way. Though he was obscenely hot. And cold at the same time. How it was possible he didn’t know, but Kaiba managed to combine those two and do it in a way that left him not melting but a powerhouse on both fronts. Unfortunately it was way too often that good looks and a crappy attitude was the combination available, and he was sick of guys who were gorgeous and knew it a bit too well. God help him if the guy actually liked him. His father engaged the group in conversation, about business as usual, and Jou zoned out. He really didn’t want to be here, he wanted to be with Yuugi and the others. The buffet-table looked really good as well.. His thoughts about food were cut short when a sharp voice said: “Jounouchi, Mister Kaiba asked a question!” his father said. “Huh?” Jou said dumbly looking firstly at his father, then Kaiba, then back again. He could practically see Kaiba resist the urge to roll his eyes. “A question? About what?” From there on he had answered generic questions with generic answers, he answered neutrally but Kaiba was sometimes downright vicious in his answers, not openly, but the snide always lay just below the surface. After some time his father had smoothly, in his own mind anyway, segue-way’ed his way into the subject of marriage, kids and family. He had even included anecdotes of the warm and fuzzy Jounouchi-homelife. It had been awkward to the point of unbearable. His father had insinuated in every tasteful, and a couple of not-so-tactful, way. Even going as far as asking Kaiba about his taste in partners, if he preferred blonds or brunettes or? Jou had tuned the whole thing even more out, if that was possible. When his father had finally realized that Kaiba was not going to talk more than necessary with Jou, he waved him off. Jou went off with a sigh of relief. Thank god that he didn’t actually want the guy, if that had been the case then his father would just have humiliated him. He firmly told himself that as he headed in the direction of the buffet-table. He was really looking forward to eating good food in the company of his friends. And the buffet, it turned out, was absolutely delicious. He had grabbed a plate and piled anything and everything onto it before joining his friends. He waved with his free hand and received a smile in return. He looked them over as he approached. Yuugi’s hair was as unmanageable as ever, but the suit he was wearing fit him nicely, showing off his small but slim stature, and he could see that he had managed to smuggle some leather wrist-bands on. Yuugi was currently talking with Ryou who was taller than Yuugi and wearing a black suit with a red shirt that seemed to make his white hair glow in all its albino glory. Anzu was observing the room and the people in it, looking stunning in a blue dress that showed her off, but wasn’t tacky. Honda stood tall next to Ryou, his tie slightly loosened and a welcoming grin on his lips as he looked at Jou. “So, introduced to Kaiba yet?” Honda asked as Jou joined them and they all turned to greet him. “Yeah. Apparently I’m not his type” Jou said in between bites. He chuckled as the others laughed. “Apparently no one is Kaiba’s type.” Yuugi said with a shrug. “And really, what is the harm in that? Who wants him anyway, besides the gold-diggers.” Anzu said. “Not me,” Ryou said and the other chimed in with answers of a similar nature. They all stopped and looked at Jou who was busy chewing. “Do you want him?” Honda asked, surprised. “What? Why?” Jou responded through a mouthful. “Well, you didn’t say the opposite?” Yuugi said, looking curious. “Are you a closet-gold-digger, Jou?” Anzu said with a laugh. “N- no! Eating here?” Jou said indignantly, trying to swallow his food and answer at the same time. There was a pause and then he continued “But the guy is hot. I mean, come on, who here wouldn’t take him for a round in the sack?” “I wouldn’t” Anzu answered right away. Again, everybody else agreed. “Yeah big surprise, Anzu and Honda, but, what, you guys, seriously?” Jou said, honestly surprised as he looked to Ryou and Yuugi. “Yeah. I mean, okay, he is attractive, but that attitude of his..” Yuugi trailed off. “I just wouldn’t want to. It’s a major turn-off for me.” “I agree with Yuugi. Besides I might have someone else so, it’s not even something I’d consider.” Ryou said with a slight blush. Everyone’s curiosity was peaked. “Oh, who is it?” Anzu’s eyes practically shined at the prospect of gossip. “Well..” Ryou hesitated for bit. “At the New Years Party here last year I met a guy. We had just arrived and my father was introducing me to Kaiba when two guys just approached the group we were in. They just walked up to Kaiba and started talking to him, like equals. One of them kinda looked like an older Yuugi and the other was an albino like me.” “Yes, but how does that make some guy ‘someone’ to you?” Honda interjected. “Shut up, Hiroto, and wait.” Anzu said with a slap to his shoulder, not even turning her head to look at him, completely focused on Ryou. “Well, my father started talking with them as well and we were introduced. Their names are Imay Atem and Akifa Bakura, they’re from Egypt. And we just sorta.. hung out for the rest of the evening.” Ryou blush had returned. “Hung out? You don’t hang out with the kind of people who are these kinds of events. You exchange small talk, business-cards, secretaries..” Jou trailed off in a slightly suggestive manner as he nudged Ryou with his shoulder. “I can assure you, that I do not exchange secretaries with my business-acquaintances.” A deep voice said from behind the group and they turned. There stood an older Yuugi. The likeness was uncanny. The only difference was the eyes, they were a deep ruby colour, his height, broader shoulders and his aura. This man carried himself with an air of confidence that Jou couldn’t help but automatically compare with Kaibas. He was definitely as self-assured, but less condescending in his manner. And where Kaiba’s eyes would have been cold and void of emotions, he found humour sparkling back at him. He decided he liked this guy. “I agree, it would be way too messy to clean up after that swap of information.” Beside him stood a white-haired man, probably the one Ryou had talked about, but his resemblance to Ryou made Jou do a double-take. This was just weird. Just like with Yuugi look-alike they resembled, but there was once again an air of confidence and wildness that clearly separated them. The albino even had scars on his face, and his eyes shone with something a bit more dangerous than the other man. “No Bakura, it would be because we like our secretaries.” Older Yuugi said with a smirk and a slight eye-roll at Bakura before turning back to the small group of younger people. “No, you like your secretaries and assistants, mine are blubbering messes, it’s impossible to find anyone confident and competent, you snag them all!” Bakura shot back, taking a sip of his drink. “Mana and Mahado are efficient because I don’t scare the crap out of my people at every chance I get, Bakura, something I thought you would have picked up on about now.” Atem chuckled a bit at his disgruntled partner before focusing on the group. “Hello Ryou, Yuugi. A pleasure to see you again.” He said with a smile, his eyes straying across the other’s faces. “Mind if we join your little social group?” “Hello Atem, a pleasure seeing you again as well.” Ryou answered with a smile. Yuugi was red in the face and looking anywhere but his look-alike. Ryou nudged him. “Hey, and we wouldn’t mind at all.” Yuugi managed to get out. Jou, Anzu and Honda stared at the small man. He was usually the epitome of politeness and etiquette, but right now he seemed too preoccupied studying the rim of his champagne-glass to even look at the new arrivals. Something was definitely going on. “Bakura, nice seeing you again.” Ryou said, smiled at the other and looked at the others. “Guys, these are the gentlemen we met last year,” Ryou said, Bakura snorted just a bit at ‘gentlemen’, and he indicated each in turn with his hand. “Imay Atem and Akifa Bakura, they own a company together in Egypt that deals with Kaiba Corp-” “Oh let’s not bore them with the details, this is supposed to be a social gathering! Though you should know that there is a third partner in case you should meet him, his name is Malik. He doesn’t really embrace the social aspect of business much, but he does get cranky if he feels left out,” Atem said with a crooked smile. “Oh, alright.” Ryou quickly rebounded. “Atem, Bakura, these are our friends; Mazaki Anzu, Honda Hiroto and Jounouchi Katsuya.” They all gave quick bows to one-another. Bakura merely nodded to them but Atem said, “a pleasure.” Smiling politely to all of them but his gaze ended and rested on Yuugi for some time before moving on. “Truly a pleasure.” There seemed to be a pause in the conversation as the group took in each other and Anzu’s, Honda’s and Jou’s minds tried to catch onto what had happened last year, and what these people were to Ryou and Yuugi and how best to extract all possible information. When no one seemed to be about to start talking anytime soon, Atem took the mantle and opened the conversation once more. “Now, just curious, but why were you talking about swapping secretaries?” he asked with a lifted eyebrow. “Well, Ryou said that he had met someone-” Jou began. “Actually, the whole thing started with Jounouchi here wondering why none of us would want Kaiba in our beds.” Ryou cut in, sending a look at Jou that clearly said ‘do not go there’. Jou would have laughed if he hadn’t just been put on the spot himself. “Oh no, are we in the presence of a Kaiba-fan?” Bakura asked with a smirk at the blond who looked like he was about to puff up at the very idea. “Hell no, he is an asshole, but he is about as hot as he is cold.” “That’s a pretty accurate description, exactly how long have you known Kaiba?” Atem asked. “About ten minutes, I’d guess,” Jou laughed with a crooked smile. “But you people can’t deny that he is also a fine piece of-” “Jou!” Anzu injected. “Well, he is, few people wouldn’t want to hit that, that’s all I’m saying.” Jou said holding his hands and plate in the air in front of him in a placating manner. “I agree.” Bakura said with a slightly toothy smile. “But then I’d have to kill him too, and that would elicit a lot of paperwork, and I’m not in a paper-pushing mood right now.” “You never are,” Atem added. “True,” Bakura said as the rest laughed. “He’s got some serious attitude-problems.. And he is always acting so damn superior, but isn’t it part of the fun? Making him loose his cool and ‘stoop to our levels’? Watch him as he disintegrates as his guards are lowered?” Jou trailed off for a bit, then realized what he had said. Everybody else had paused in whatever they were doing. “Wow.” Honda said slowly. “You actually like this guy!” Jou spluttered as the others laughed. “I suppose he is your type, in a certain way ... You do grow in the face of opposition..” Honda continued. He looked thoughtful for a second. “You and Mai did seem to have the best of times when you were arguing.” He laughed. “I’m just happy Mai found Varon before the two of you started ripping each other’s heads off.” Jou sighed. “Yeah, me too, I guess.” “Me three” Mai chimed in as she walked up to the group arm in arm with Varon. She looked beautiful, waves of blond hair falling down her back in intricate curls and heels clicking on the floor as she walked. Varon had completely foregone a tie and had even unbuttoned the top button, though his jacket was still buttoned closed, looking great, despite the bordering-on-too-relaxed-attire. The group chuckled. She looked to the side with a frown and elbowed the brunet next to her in the ribs. “Ow!” Varon gave her a slightly evil look but sighed. “Me four.. I guess” He mumbled as he rubbed his ribs with his free arm. “Do you have to use your sharp elbow?” “Does she have any other kind?” Jou asked, then evaded as Mai lunged for him. “Haha, I guess not” Varon laughed, watching his girlfriends chase Jou around for a bit before snagging her away from Jou, who had hidden behind Yugi, holding her around the waist and started kissing her. Mai kissed back for a moment before moving her head back and assessing him with a look. “Are you just trying to placate me?” she said with a frown. “Yes” Varon said with a sassy smile. “Hm.” She said, but still leaned forward and gave him a peck on the lips before moving to his side, Varon keeping an arm around her. “How do you do that? I could never make her calm down like that!” Jou exclaimed with a pout. “That’s my secret, blondie,” Varon said with a wink. “Yeah, well, I definitely tamed her for you. You know, like a jar with a lid you just can’t open, then a different guy tries, fails, hands it back and then you can open it? I loosened her lid for you” “What did you just say, blondie? You loosened my lid?” Mai asked in intimidating manner and she and Jou soon engaged in verbal fighting with Varon as the unimpressed spectator as most of the other group turned to talk amongst themselves. “This sure is a lively bunch,” Atem said with a smile at Yuugi who had loosened up and was currently laughing lowly as he watched his best friend and ex-girlfriend argue like they used to. “Yeah, you should see them when they really let it loose,” Yuugi chuckled with a fond look in his eyes. “I suppose they wouldn’t at an event such as this?” Atem commented. “I don’t think so, Mai definitely has more sense of herself, and Jounouchi probably does as well, this is just their way of letting each other know that they miss one-another” Ryou said. “Oh, we should introduce you! I’m sorry, that was rude of us.” Yuugi suddenly exclaimed before stopping the verbal mud-fight and having Mai, Jou and Varon focus on him. “Mai, Varon, this is Imay Atem and Akifa Bakura. Atem, Bakura, this is Kujaku Mai and Takeshi Varon.” They exchanged pleasantries. “Nice to meet you, you seem like you’ve all known each other for a long time.” Atem said politely. “Yeah, we’ve all pretty much known each other forever” Ryou smiled warmly. “So is this the whole tightly knit group or are there more people?” Bakura asked. “Um, no, we are missing Ishtar Marik, but he couldn’t come.. Aside from that I think this is everyone..?” Jou said slowly looking to the others for confirmation. “And Otogi!” Honda added. “Oh, right, you said he would stop by, but I haven’t seen him all evening” Yuugi said as he looked around the huge room. “Speaking of the devil! OTOGI!” Honda half-yelled as he waved, catching the attention of everyone in the near area, which made the rest of the group chuckle, but also the attention of the black-haired man who had now changed his direction as was weaving his way through the crowds towards them. Otogi greated them with a sexy smirk as he walked up to Honda and greeted him warmly. “Good evening everyone,” he said smiling around at them all. “I’m sorry it took so long for me to find you, I’ve been stuck alternately with boring old men or Kaiba. I don’t even know which is worse.” “I’m surprised you could even talk with Kaiba, I’d imagine the throng of fangirls would make it difficult to get within ten feet of him.” Jou said with a smirk. “Jounouchi!” Otogi smiled and walked up to Jou sliding an arm around his shoulders and squeezing. “Long time no see! I suppose you are right, but I’ve got my fair share of experience with fangirls, I’ve got a couple of tricks up my sleeve.” He added a wink. Jou extracted himself from Otogi’s arm and gave him a look. “I see you still haven’t picked up on the whole personal space-concept.” “Only with you, Jou, take it as a compliment.” Otogi smiled. He turned his attention to the others “Atem, Bakura” he acknowledged with a nod for each, to which they nodded back. “How on Earth did the two of you get shang-hai’ed over here?” “We volunteered.” Atem smiled.
