After about an hour of cleaning up, and close calls, the
doctors finally wheeled Yami back toward the recovery room that was in the ICU
wing. Seto was pacing back and forth in the waiting room; he couldn’t stand
there and just watch Yami die. From all apparent signs, the ex-spirit did look
dead.
“Mr.
Kaiba, you can come into the ICU now. But I have to explain a few things to
you, so please listen to me carefully.” Dr. Kinomori spoke softly, leading Seto
down the hall. He in turn carried Kamilah, who was sound asleep.
“Just
tell me what’s going on… why did he code in there? And why was our son blue? I
want to know…” Seto asked, looking down at the somewhat shorter doctor.
“He
was hemorrhaging somehow from an artery that got nicked. I’m thinking it
happened when we made the incision, and the baby only aggravated the problem.
Yami will be fine in a few days.” She replied, looking into a lost sapphire gaze.
Seto
nodded, sighing for a moment. Soon he was brought into the recovery room,
seeing Yami attached to an IV and a bag holding some blood. A light frown
crossed his lips as he saw how lifeless his lover looked.
“He
looks dead…” Seto spoke softly, moving to sit in the chair next to Yami’s bed.
He then realized that the doctor didn’t answer his question about their son.
“He
lost a lot of blood, Mr. Kaiba. Now your son on the other hand is fine. His
color is looking good, and his apgar score is good as well an 8 out of a
possible 10. I just suggest that you don’t stay long.” Dr. Kinomori smiled for
a moment, watching as one of the nurses brought the baby boy in.
Seto
gasped for a moment, smiling as he saw the tiny infant being wheeled in. He couldn’t
believe how tiny he was, barely six pounds at birth. But now he knew that the
doctor was going to ask for a name, but that in itself was hard. He and Yami
never agreed on one, but perhaps he could come up with a compromise. Perhaps
combine both names they were debating on.
“That’s
good… I suppose you are going to need his name for the birth certificate
right?” Seto asked, watching as the doctor picked his son up carefully.
“It
would be a nice thing to know, yes. What is it?” Dr. Kinomori asked, gently
placing Yukio in Yami’s arms.
Yami
shifted very slightly as he felt something placed in his arms, he opened his
crimson/ violet eyes halfway to see the doctor and Seto still there. A weak
smile crossed his lips, but he couldn’t bring himself to speak. But
instinctively he held Yukio carefully, supporting his tiny head.
“His
name is Yukio Toshi Kaiba…” Seto replied, smiling for a moment before kissing
Yukio on the top of his head gently. In turn their newly named son squirmed for
a moment, opening his tiny hands.
“You
should rest… you’ve had a hard time of it…” Dr. Kinomori spoke, looking toward
Yami as she noticed his eyes open.
Seto
turned to look at Yami, a light smile crossing his lips this time. But he
couldn’t bring himself to look at the other for very long. Shame was clearly
written in his eyes among other things. Part of his promise was that he
wouldn’t hurt him… and he did.
“Please
listen to her. Yukio will be fine; I just want you to rest up. I almost lost
you…” Seto started, watching the look on Yami’s face change slightly.
“I
will… but I want to be sure you’ll still be here when I wake up…” Yami replied
softly, not wanting to raise his voice because of the fact he was holding Yukio.
“Don’t
worry love… I will be.” Seto spoke, then watched Yami fall asleep again as he
was holding their son.
Soon
he was thinking back to what had happened earlier… and he was now feeling
rather bad about it. Why had he acted that way when Jeeves called, and more
importantly… why did he cheat on Yami in the first place?
~*~
Flashback ~*~
Reason
by Hoobastank played loudly. Seto woke abruptly from his position on the fold
out couch in his rented apartment. He tugged an arm out of the grip of the
other person in the bed. The owner of the apartment. He looked down at her, not
quite understanding what had happened.
“…Hello?”
he said groggily. The girl beside him shifted, making a little noise
and hugging him tighter. He pulled the sheet up
over them, covering their bodies.
“Master Kaiba, who is that I hear in your
bed?” Seto raised an eyebrow,
looking at the clock.
“Jeeves… It’s three in
the morning here…Can’t a guy get some sleep?” The butler on the other end made
a frustrated sound.
“You better not have
been to bed with that girl. I swear Master Yami will kill you if you did.” Seto
looked down at the girl beside him. He was in deep shit right there.
“It just sort of
happened, Jeeves. I really can’t help that I’m a fifty-fifty bisexual.” The
girl woke, looking up at him.
“Who is it, Kai-chan?”
Seto looked down at her, putting on his act.
“Jeeves is checking up
on me. Wondering why I’m not home yet as well.” She smiled, running a finger
down his chest.
“You gonna tell him,
Kai-chan?” Seto shook his head, retuning to Jeeves.
“What’s going on
there?” Jeeves made a worried sound when Mokuba called down to him.
“Master Yami has gone
into labor. You have to come home.”
~*~ End Flashback ~*~
Seto saw Yukio off to the NICU
before heading down to the cafeteria to think on what he had done just hours
before. He found Mokuba and Kamilah there eating some chocolate pudding. He
picked his daughter up, smiling at her.
“How’s my baby girl been? Have you
been taking care of Da?” Kamilah frowned, hugging Seto’s neck.
“Baby hurt Da. Kami no help. Kami
sad.” Seto still smiled, patting Mokuba’s head.
“It’s alright, Kami-chan. Da’s
better now. Plus you have a new brother now.” Kamilah pulled back, looking at
him. She was confused.
“Brofer?” She couldn’t pronounce it
yet, nor did she know what it meant. Seto chuckled. He motioned for Mokuba to
follow.
“Let’s go see him.”
-~-~-~
Mokuba struggled to see through the
plastic dome that enclosed Yukio to his bas. “He’s small, Seto-nii-sama. Why is
he so small?” He asked, looking up at his brother. Seto continued to stare down
at his son.
“He would have been bigger had he
been full term.” Kamilah seemed to be
fascinated by the little life before her.
“Kami hold baby No-Da?” Seto looked
at one of the nurses standing nearby. She stepped forward, pushing a chair
towards Seto. He sat in it, putting Kamilah on his left leg.
The nurse opened the dome,
carefully lifting Yukio out of the bassinet. Seto held out his arms, accepting
the newborn into his arms. Kamilah had reached up as well. The CEO settled
Yukio into his lap, making sure Kamilah had some of him in her lap as well. He
supported his son’s head while she touched his forehead.
“Gentle, Kamilah.”
Kamilah smiled for a moment,
looking up at Seto before looking down at her baby brother. She watched him open
his eyes for a moment, causing a giggle to emerge from her lips.
“Baby look at me.” Kamilah chirped,
gently touching the top of his head.
“He wants to see his big sister.”
Seto smiled, keeping Yukio in his arms.
Mokuba smiled, watching Kamilah with
her new brother. She seemed to be taking this all pretty well, perhaps she was
even excited. He smiled wider when he heard Yukio coo softly as Kamilah touched
his forehead.
“It’s hard to believe someone so
tiny could cause so much trouble… should we go check on Yami?”
“Later, Mokuba. He needs his rest;
after all he did have a hard time of it. I just wish I was here…” Seto spoke
softly, hearing The Reason playing in the back of his mind. How could he have
been so stubborn?
The nurse smiled at the two for a
moment before gently taking Yukio back into her arms. She knew it wasn’t good
for a preemie to be out of the incubator this long, even though it was only a
few minutes.
“What are you doing to him now? I
didn’t get to hold him very long…” Seto started, looking up at the nurse as he
sat in the chair.
“I suppose I can give you a few
more minutes… but he shouldn’t be out of his incubator too long. He had a very
long day and I’m sure he’s tired.” The nurse replied, smiling softly.
Seto nodded, looking at Yukio for a
moment. He understood why he had to go back, besides he would be having plenty
of time to see him later. But he was afraid of what he’d see when he returned
to Yami’s ICU room.
“If you don’t want to compromise
his health, then you can put him back in his incubator. I know we’ll see him
again later. He does look a little sleepy to me.” Seto smiled, watching Yukio
as he opened his mouth in a tiny yawn.
“Baby sleepy. Kami sleepy too.”
Kamilah yawned as well, curling up on Seto’s lap.
The nurse nodded, opening the lid
to the incubator before gently placing Yukio back inside the bassinet. A smile
crossed her lips this time as she put the little sticky tabs on his chest.
“You’ll be able to bring him home
in about two weeks or so, depending on how quickly he grows. For now why don’t
you go home and rest? He’ll still be here tomorrow.” The nurse spoke, closing
the lid.
“What about Yami? I want to stay
with him. He’s probably not out of the woods yet is he?” Seto asked, not
knowing if the nurse would know anything about Yami’s current state or not.
The nurse frowned for a moment,
looking at Seto. She didn’t know what would happen if he went back to the ICU
and talked to Yami, but she also didn’t know what to expect if the CEO didn’t.
There were so many unknown factors…
“I’m not sure. But no he isn’t out
of the woods yet. We have to keep him on IV fluids for awhile, but he should be
able to come home in a few days. Although I’m sure he’s sick of being in a
bed.” The nurse spoke softly, looking at Seto.
“Yes he is… having been on bed rest
for the last month or two would do that. But I’ll tell him that he can be free
in a few days.” Seto smiled, walking back toward the ICU while he held Mokuba’s
hand. And in turn he carried Kamilah in his free arm.

As he walked by the office, he
heard another song that sounded like how he felt at the moment. It was “Cold”
by Crossfade, and one verse caused him to frown, stopping for just a moment as
he listened carefully to the lyrics.
I
never really wanted you to see
The screwed up side of me that I keep
Locked inside of me so deep
It always seems to get to me
I
never really wanted you to go
So many things you should have known
I guess for me there’s just no hope
I never meant to be so cold
Seto sighed, finally passing by
office. Soon he arrived in Yami’s ICU room, the frown not leaving his face. He
watched the other carefully, still wondering how he could have been so stupid.
He handed Kamilah to Mokuba, motioning for him to stay outside for now.
“I am so sorry… I didn’t want this
to happen, Yami. I don’t blame you if you hate me now… but please, give me
another chance.” Seto spoke softly, putting his hand on Yami’s.
Yami shifted for a moment, his eyes
were half open this time but he didn’t know what to say in response to Seto.
For some reason he still had the platinum and gold band on his ring finger. He
didn’t know why though, it just reminded him of the promise Seto made after he
nearly died.
“Seto… I have given you two chances
already. You weren’t there for me… you cheated on me with that secretary you
fired didn’t you? Just tell me why… I’m in no condition to be yelling right
now.” Yami spoke softly, turning his gaze away from Seto.
“I wasn’t thinking, Yami. That’s
why I did it… but I was also torn. I didn’t think that this would be happening
so soon. You weren’t due for another three weeks…” Seto sighed.
“I thought the same thing, but the
doctor said it was stress. I got myself worked up over various things really.
One was the tabloid of us at the store; the other was this incident with you
and your new lover.” Yami muttered, his gaze still looking at the wall.
Seto sighed, moving to turn Yami’s
head so he’d look at him. He knew that the former Pharaoh was mad, although
that was an understatement. Pissed was more like it. Although he was prepared
for Yami to do anything in response to his latest actions.
“She is not my new lover! It was an
accident, I found myself in her apartment that’s all!” Seto protested, not
wanting to say what he did with her. He was already in deep as it was, and he
didn’t want to dig the hole any deeper.
“Will it happen again? Or are you
going to leave me in my time of need again?” Yami asked, looking at Seto. He
fiddled with the ring on his finger for a moment, seriously contemplating the
meaning of the proposal.
“No… it won’t happen again. Yami, I
honestly didn’t mean it. Give me one more chance to prove it. I want to be
there for you and Yukio. And Kamilah too…” Seto sighed, watching Yami fiddle
with the ring.
Yami sighed, looking at the bed
sheets for a moment. He knew there were such things as second chances, but
third? As Pharaoh he never gave anyone a third chance, but these were different
times. Now it was the ‘Three strikes and you’re out’ rule. He might as well use
that rule now.
“I never gave anyone more than two
chances… but I’m following the modern times now. I believe you have what is
called a three strike rule? I will go with that. However if you screw up again,
I don’t know what I’ll do.” Yami managed to say, but he removed the ring from
his finger and gave it back to Seto.
“But why give this back to me? I
thought you accepted the proposal…” Seto asked, his voice cracking for a
moment. He was majorly confused now.
“You lied… I remember the promise you
made. That you wanted to be with me for eternity… I do still want to be with
you. But until you change, and admit what you did was wrong I can’t accept your
ring.” Yami replied, looking at Seto. There were tears in his eyes now.
“But I told you, I can’t help what
I am. I’m bi, and everyone realizes that. You know what that means, I know you
do…” Seto sighed, holding the ring in his hand. He wasn’t going to lose it
though. “But I do love you…”
Yami sighed, and then nodded. He
understood what being bi sexual meant, that Seto loved both men and women. It
was just times like this he felt like he was the odd one out, since he didn’t
feel anything toward the opposite gender.
“I know you do… but this is harder
on me. I feel like the odd one out in all of this… I can’t help the way I am
either. So what if I’m not like you… I never had feelings for the opposite
gender. Seto… I know you were joking about the Telletubby thing, but you know
what I am…” Yami sighed, turning his back to Seto. He was trying to hide the
tears now.
“Yami… I didn’t mean anything by
it, honestly. I know you’re gay… I don’t have a problem with it. You don’t have
to feel like you’re the odd one out. Just please… let me help you. You’re just
emotional still after Yukio and all…” Seto started, figuring he knew why Yami
was acting this way.
Yami just nodded, figuring that was
the answer. His hormones were probably still messed up from the pregnancy, and
now he was probably going through a combination of post partum depression and
trying to recover from blood loss. However his feelings toward Seto were true.
He did not appreciate being treated like this. Now the big question was should
he accept the ring back later on? Or do something else entirely?
