Drabble 10: Call of the Wild
Very slowly he opened one eye, gazing at his surroundings through his lashes, and hoped no one noticed. There were key questions that needed answers before he could allow himself to react to the situation at hand. His head ached and the feeling of nausea made the bile in his empty stomach rise. The brunet forced it back down, determined to figure out what was going on. The sounds seemed muffled and loud at the same time in his disoriented state.
‘Question one: What is the last thing I remember,’ he thought to himself, ‘I had just left the office. Something was odd and my bodyguards surrounded me. There were shots and Roland shoved me into the parking lot. I was running away from the attackers, trying to reach the gun in my shoe, when I was tackled from the side. I smelled something funny… Chloroform!’ He kept his body lax and as they swerved to the side, he bumped into the arm of a businessman. The man shoved him away so that he slammed his head into the side of the vehicle they were in.
“When the fuck does this shit wear off? The sooner we get the codes, get in the case, and steal their prototypes, the sooner we can dump him below.” The gruff voice of a man he knew all too well rang in his ears.
“It should wear off soon, unless it was held to his airways for longer than I thought. It depends on how much he inhaled. Too bad his brother was able to get in lockdown. I normally don’t have to have the ‘big fish’ as part of my catch. I don’t like it.” Another male answered. It wasn’t a voice he recognized, but he filed it away in the section of his mind where he kept his hit list.
‘Question two: Where am I? We aren’t at Kaiba Corp’s South American branch office anymore.’ The brunet opened his other eye enough to try to look out the window. It was then he realized something. Both men had been yelling and yet their voices seemed just as muffled as the rest of the world. Then it hit him. ‘Fuck, we aren’t driving.’
High above the city in a helicopter, the kidnappers flew quickly, traveling over uncharted areas of forests and jungles.
‘Just great, how the hell am I supposed to get out of this?’ He thought angrily before gathering his thoughts again. ‘So Mokuba is safe. That’s good news. The case is… still handcuffed to my wrist. My hands… are tied in front of me. My legs remain unbound. Where’s my gun… Damn, they must have found it in my boot!’ The dizziness was beginning to wear off, something Kaiba was grateful for. If he sprang up and swung his briefcase at the one man, then knocked the other out, it was possible to force the pilot to get him back to the office. The sound of a gun cocking back froze his thinking for a moment.
“I don’t see why I just can’t kill the bastard. He’s ruined everything for me. What kind of thanks is that for raising the piece of shit?”
The metal was cool against his temple and he forced himself to remain calm. Even Gozaburo wasn’t stupid enough to shoot a gun in a helicopter.
“Kaiba-san, I’ve told you that we need the codes he has. I know for a fact that if the briefcase isn’t opened correctly that the contents would be rendered useless. If he does decide to ruin his own inventions, we can always put him under the knife. Need I remind you that I am knowledgeable in how the human mind works? I can pull the information from his mind and we can skip all the mess of killing him.” An idea seemed to hit the businessman as the gun began to run gently up and down the side of Seto’s face.
“Could you make him… a slave? Make him obedient to me?”
Now the brunet really felt like throwing up. When he’d defeated his stepfather four years ago and took control of Kaiba Corp, he made sure the other man had no rights to anything. The guy had just disappeared. Seto hoped him dead, but didn’t expect this sudden attack. His stepfather normally left little hints to scare ‘prey’ before attacking. The older male either learned to be subtle or someone wasn’t keeping Seto informed enough.
“It’s possible, I suppose, but it would cost you.”
‘Question three: What is my plan of escape? We must be traveling at, at least, sixty and be at an altitude of a few hundred feet. They would need to be low enough to stay under the radar, but not low enough to hit the trees… I’m not going to be able to survive that without a parachute… Knowing Gozaburo, he has one under his seat by his feet… Knock him out, knock the other idiot out, grab the chute, and get the fuck out of here!’ Plan figured out, he silently undid his seatbelt and stretched his fingers out to grip the handle of the case tightly, ‘One… two…’ Both of Seto’s blue eyes opened as he swung the case around and smashed it into the side of his stepfather’s face. The older male was taken by surprise and barely felt anything as he fell into the darkness of unconsciousness.
The other man, someone he’d never seen before, yelled out in shock and tried to grab something from his pocket. Seto dove for the gun dangling from his stepfather’s hands and grabbed the parachute that was, just like he predicted, next to the bastard’s feet. A sudden stab of pain in his leg had him growling out. A clear liquid was pushed into his leg before he could stop the stranger. He threw his body weight into his other leg and kicked the graying man in the jaw. Seto tried to stand, but one of his legs was numb.
“Bastard!” Seto growled and smacked him with his briefcase. The pilot was yelling something as the copter weaved back and forth, nearly sweeping Seto off his feet. He gripped the door handle and gave a hard yank. Like a vacuum, Kaiba Seto was sucked out of the helicopter. He clutched onto the parachute as tightly as he could and pulled the cord. The wind picked up the chute and he was pulled and yanked around rather hard. He held on fast, thinking only of surviving and getting back to his brother in one piece. When the wind died down, the chute traveled more smoothly, and he saw the ground coming up faster and faster. Before he hit, the chute caught on a branch. The numbness had traveled into his other leg and further up.
“Son of a bitch,” he panted, arms sore from hanging on and being pulled to their limits. He dangled for a moment before reaching out for a nearby vine. He felt the texture and only gripped it tightly when he was sure it wasn’t a snake. With the last of his strength, Seto dropped to the ground as slowly as he could. The CEO had no idea how long the paralysis would last, but it looked like a small dose. He sat at the foot of the tree and straightened his legs out.
“Move your big toe,” Kaiba commanded his body, then broke out in a chuckle, “If only Mokuba heard me say that.” His blue eyes looked at his tied hands and were surprised to see the gun tightly held in his palms. Well, at least he had some protection. Using his teeth he freed his wrists and stuck the gun in his belt.
‘Last question: Where the fuck am I now, and how do I get back to civilization?’ The question plagued him for over an hour as he waited out the serum the psycho in the helicopter stabbed him with. He noticed that his phone had no reception, the gun was fully loaded, and that he had no food or water by which to survive with.
“With my luck I’m stuck in the middle of the Amazon. It’s over two million miles! I have no compass, no map, no nothing!” Kaiba Seto forced himself to his feet once the numbness wore off. He left the parachute there and continued on foot, hoping to reach a river and eventually find another human life to guide him out. The forest around him wasn’t quiet and he found himself keeping as alert as possible. He refused to be some creature’s dinner. After hours of walking he was greeted with a much needed sign: a river. It was small, but it was something.
‘The big issue is if I drink it is it going to make me sick? If I don’t drink it, am I going to get dehydrated faster?’ The CEO thought to himself and looked up and down the small river. He decided to wait. If other animals came and drank from the stream, then it should be okay for him to drink. Kaiba followed the river up, watching the direction it flowed. Every river emptied somewhere, so where did this one empty to? He ignored the growling of his stomach, keeping an eye out for falling spiders or frogs, but froze when he heard a growl that didn’t belong to his empty belly. The sound was coming from somewhere further up on the path. Keeping the trees and other plant life as his shield, Seto slowly made his way further up the stream.
“Aaroo?”
Was it a dog? It sounded like one of the mutts he had seen running around in some of the smaller villages they had passed through on their “tour” of the area. A snake slithered past his shoes and he froze. The creature seemed content to get away from the noise coming from the bigger creatures he was heading towards. Not one to be a follower, he ventured forward and was shocked with what he saw. It wasn’t an animal, but it wasn’t human either!
There were four males romping and wrestling around next to the river bed. They hooped and howled and growled and made other assortments of noises that he could only assume were bits of their language. Atop their heads was a pair of dog ears that twitched, flattened, and pivoted around listening for noises. Tails varying in shape, size, and color wagged behind them. The CEO remained silent, watching as they rolled around like little kids, though they all looked to be more his age. The wind picked up a little, blowing some of his longer strands of hair into his eyes. He knocked them back when he realized that he might have been noticed.
One of the creatures, the tallest and most physically fit of the group, stopped suddenly and sniffed the air. He was immediately tackled by a short haired brunet male who yipped in victory. The blond that had been sniffing the air let out a laugh, the first human sounding noise that Seto had heard yet. They had on what looked like fur skirts, bare chests, and no shoes. Their fingers looked to have sharp claws at the tips and he could see they all had sharp teeth when they grinned at each other. If he had been noticed, he was quickly forgotten as they continued their romping.
‘They look like they are having a blast. I’d ask for help, but they’d likely eat me before anything else.’ Seto thought to himself, watching how their bodies moved with ease, like dancers gliding across the floor. The blond was especially agile, dodging his three friends with ease before letting the smallest one, who had the oddest colors of red, black, and blond, tackle him down. They bumped heads, nuzzled cheeks, and nipped ears. It was like watching a pack of dogs playing tag! A loud howl stopped their play and the blond stood up to return the call. He growled something to his friends and pointed to the brush where they each sprinted away towards. The blond remained, standing tall and strong. His ears twitched and his blond tail swished in a nervous sway.
‘Something isn’t right. What the hell is he waiting for?’ Seto watched as the blond turned slowly, every muscle moving to show off their strength, and kneeled at the stream. He gathered water in his hands and brought the water to his lips to drink. Every move seemed calculated, as if waiting for something to happen. The creature rubbed his wet palms on his chest. Kaiba got the feeling he was being played and slowly turned his head around to see two pairs of eyes watching him from the tree across from him.
“Fuck,” he whispered and slowly stood up. These creatures were, obviously, not stupid. He heard a growl behind him and he turned to see the blond was only a foot away from him. Eyes of gold stared into his ocean blue. The blond tilted his head, his ears twisting this way and that, and stared.
“Bowru?” The CEO starred, not knowing how to answer, and suddenly remembered the gun at his waist. He held his ground. The worst thing to do was to show an animal that you were backing down. He pulled out his gun and held it straight at the creature’s face. The blond’s eyes crossed to look at the strange object.
“Back the fuck away from me and I won’t shoot you!” Kaiba growled. The blond looked confused and sniffed the tip of the gun. A rustle of noises behind him told the human that they were closing in. He pointed the gun away from the blond and fired. The bang of the gun was loud and the blond leaped over eight feet in the air to grab onto the tree. His ears were flat against his head and he whimpered. A deep growl came from behind Seto and he knew he would have to kill one of them before they let him go, if they let him leave at all.
Kaiba moved slow, turning to face the two creatures that came out of the plants. He aimed his gun and took a step back. He knew his safest bet would be to have all of them in front of him. For every step he took back towards the stream, they took one towards him. Seto really didn’t want to waste his bullets on these animals, but he didn’t have much choice if they stood in his way of getting back to normal society.
“One,” he commented as he watched the confused blond slide down the tree to get back on solid ground, “two and three,” he counted the long black haired male and the brunet, but one was missing. The smallest one with the weird coloring wasn’t anywhere to be seen. Had he taken off to get reinforcements? The CEO was suddenly tackled from the left. The other creatures dodged away, just in case the gun went off. Kaiba landed hard on his side, but held tightly to the gun. He jerked his head to see the fourth member leaping off of him. He tried to shift and point his weapon at the small male, but the blond jumped in front, grabbing his wrist tightly and glared at him. It was as if he dared him to shoot.
“Bowru?” It was still a question of some sort, but his look was fierce.
“I really don’t want to have to kill you.” The two off to the side were making growls and whines, probably giving their opinion on what should happen. The blond didn’t look away from the CEO as he held up his free hand and growled deeply from his throat. Everyone was quiet, none of them were sure of what would happen next. Without warning, the blond swiped out with his free hand and yanked the gun out of Seto’s grip. He tossed it easily to the brunet in his group and when Kaiba tried to fight him off, he tackled the CEO and pinned him to the ground.
“Aaroo ba, barwroo?” The brunet questioned, holding the gun out like it would bite him. The blond let out a small huff and the rest of the pack took off with a happy yip.
“Let me go you fucking beast! I have to get back to my brother!” The blond held him with little effort, keeping one hand pinning both of Seto’s wrists while his free hand remained propped at his hip. It was a good twenty minutes before Kaiba Seto calmed down enough to catch his breath. The creature on top of him waited, making growls and grunts every so often to show he wouldn’t wait patiently. The blond took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He leaned forward and inhaled the scent of the brunet.
“What the hell are you doing?” The creature’s free hand gently brushed brown bangs from Seto’s blue eyes before gently petting the side of his face. The exploration continued, slowly from one cheek to the other before traveling down the CEO’s neck. He felt the fabric of his clothes between his thumb and index finger before rubbing his palms across his pinned prey’s chest. He leaned farther down and blew air across Seto’s face, confusing the human. The blond’s breath had a sweet smell, like fruit and honey. The blond waited and tilted his head to the side. Seto inhaled a breath and blew it back in the other’s face.
“Roo!” He yipped, his ears twitching in happiness. He pointed to himself, his lips moving slow, “Jounouchi… Jou… Bowru?” He pointed to Seto and waited.
“Jou?” Seto repeated. The blond smiled from ear to ear, his tail wagged behind him, and he let one of the human’s hands go. He held the hand to his chest and repeated what the brunet began to understand was his name. Seto pressed his hand back to his own chest.
“Kaiba Seto… Se-to.” It took Jou a few tries, but he managed to say Kaiba’s name right. Perhaps he wasn’t in danger of being eaten or killed. It would be weird for a creature to want to know your name before eating or killing you. Then again, it was strange for something that was and wasn’t human to ask for his name either!
Jounouchi slowly released Seto’s other hand and remained still. Kaiba didn’t move, eyes staring at the other male who remained seated in his lap. A long loud howl echoed throughout the area, making the blond jump to his feet. His face grew grim, body tight, and a deep growl rumbled in his throat. Seto looked at the blond and realized he could see underneath the other male’s skirt. He was rather impressed, but shook his head and got to his feet.
“You’re friends are in trouble?” The blond took off like a shot and was already across the clearing and heading into the jungle. Seto stood there shocked.
“He could have attacked me at any moment, killed me the second he smelled me, but he didn’t. Was he… playing with me?” The blond was once again in front of him. He could blink his eyes and the male would be here and gone again!
“Haroo, Seto!” Jou grabbed his arm and tried to hurry the CEO up, but he was too fast for the human to keep up with. With a huff, Jounouchi threw Seto over his shoulder and raced away. He had a nice grip of the brunet’s rear and made sure to hit the other with his tail every so often. Cries of pain ceased his flirting and he stopped at the edge of the battle where he set Kaiba on his feet. Jounouchi opened his mouth and let out a deep growl that turned into a howl. Several others joined in the call. Out of the trees a giant animal leaped toward the blond. It was a jaguar!
“Seto!” Jou growled and moved between the snarling cat and the CEO. He growled and puffed out his chest. The jaguar swiped at him, but he dodged and slammed into the beast. He slashed with his own claws and jumped on the cat’s back. Jou sank his teeth in the back of the animal’s neck and reared back, tearing some of the fur and flesh from his enemy. The cat yowled and howled in agony, trying to buck the blond from its back or reach around with its claws. Jou howled in pain as the jaguar nipped the flesh of his back with a large swipe. He leapt off the cat which was then attacked by two other creatures. It didn’t take them long to kill the large beast.
“ROO! ROO!” The other’s cheered as the few injured hobbled over to the blond. There were about fifteen in total that Seto had counted. A small red haired female rushed to Jou’s side, licking his wounds, and trying to help him up. Kaiba felt out of place. What the hell was he supposed to do? A bigger blond came barreling through the jungle and stopped in front of the red head and Jounouchi. Growls, yips, and whines were exchanged back and forth until the larger creature walked over to the kill and nodded his approval.
“Seto, haroo.” Kaiba looked at the injured blond who motioned him close. Goosebumps scattered up his arms as he heard the unwelcomed growls of the others in the pack. He took a step closer to the blond only to have the bigger one stand in his way. The growl was deep and dangerous as the bigger male snarled and bared his teeth. The CEO held his ground and glared no matter how much he wanted to get the hell out of there. Jounouchi moved in front of him and bared his teeth to the other creature, only to be slapped across the face. He was hit hard enough to be completely knocked over. Without thinking, Seto kicked the bigger blond straight in the balls. There was a gasp of shock among the pack as their leader dropped to the ground in pain.
“Jou, are you ok?” Kaiba said with a sigh and helped the blond to his feet. Shocked wide eyes looked up into cool blue.
“Seto,” he breathed, blowing his breath over the human’s face again. The pack leader saw this and watched in surprise as Seto returned the gesture. He stood up once the pain was more bearable and made a gruff ruff towards the blond. Jounouchi looked up and smiled when the leader came close and ruffled his hair. The leader glanced at the human and pointed a claw at him.
“Human,” he said deeply before pointing to himself, “Wolf. Why here? Dangerous.” Seto blinked for a moment.
“You know the language?” The CEO asked. The wolf shifted to his other foot.
“Some. Met humans before,” he frowned, “No good. Many die. Why here?” He demanded, letting the brunet look at his small pack. The CEO could see how the wolves might not have been treated right.
“I need to get back home.” Jounouchi looked back and forth between their leader and the brunet, not knowing what was being said, but it didn’t look all bad either. His tail wagged, bumping against Seto’s upper thigh. Kaiba reached over and grabbed the center of the blond’s tail in a firm grip.
“A mate?”
“I have a brother.” When the tail in his grasp settled, he let his fingers pet the fur from base to tip. It was soft. The leader did not seem happy.
“I am Ka. You must go. No stay. Human bad.”
“I’m lost. If you guide me out of here I’ll leave that much faster. Can you take me to a place with people like me?” Jounouchi leaned closer to the brunet, enjoying the attention, but couldn’t help his small whimper of pain. His back was on fire. Seto glanced at the blond’s wounds and looked back to the leader.
“He needs his wounds bandaged. Do you have water?” The leader turned and woofed to a nearby female, who looked like an older version of the red head who tried to help Jounouchi earlier.
“We take care. Go away!” Jounouchi pushed away from the female and yapped at the leader who growled in return. They seemed to be arguing. The leader reached up and pinched one of the shorter blond’s ears. He gave it a firm tug until the other whimpered. Claws pointed to Seto and then back to the two wolves. The CEO had no idea what was going on, but he knew it involved him. The leader grew red in the face and growled deeply in his chest, silencing the younger of the two. He released the ear and waited. Jounouchi slowly walked over to Seto, who looked confused, and reached out to touch his ears. They were not wolf ears.
“Seto?” The CEO frowned in concern and took off his trench coat. Using his teeth, he ripped a large piece of the material and used it to dab at the blond’s wounds. Ka growled and yanked Jounouchi to him.
“Stop.”
“He needs those taken care of before they get infected!”
“He no need YOU. You go. Leave.” Kaiba frowned. With no guide he was as good as dead. What happened if a jaguar found him and decided to make a meal of him? What if he was starving and ate the wrong plant? At the rate he was going he was never going to get back to civilization.
“How can I leave without a guide? If you have no one to guide me then I’ve nowhere to go.”
“Pater,” Jounouchi whined, but didn’t fight his leader.
“You stay?” Ka asked, more confused than anything. His pack hadn’t traveled near humans since he was a pup. His father had tried to have a relationship with them since they were slowly taking over their true home in the mountains. Things did not end well. The whole tribe was nearly slaughtered. This human was trouble, even more so with Jounouchi involved.
“Temporarily, yes. When I can find the means back home, then I’ll leave.” Sadness grew in the leader's eyes, but he only gave a nod and released the blond.
“Pater?” Jounouchi received a nod before the leader began tending to the other injured pack members.
“Jou, do you have water?”
The red headed girl, from earlier, tugged on Seto’s pants. She looked to be about Mokuba’s age. In her hand was a small bowl with water in it. He gave her a rare smile and took the offering. Slowly he tended to the blond’s wounds. The redhead chatted with growls to the injured party who responded back just as eager.
‘So much for being in pain,’ Kaiba thought as he finished. He was surprised to see the wounds already starting to close. The wolves seemed to have a good recovery rate. Jounouchi stood up and blew another mouthful of air on the brunet’s face. The gesture was returned.
“You do some of the strangest things to greet people.” The blond only smiled and pointed to the red head.
“Zuka, soror.” Seto repeated and nodded. It was then that it dawned on him. They were speaking Latin! There was more to them than growls and howls.
“She’s your sister… Pater?” Jounouchi nodded and pointed to Ka.
“Mater, amicus,” the blond continued to point out different people in his pack.
‘Of all the wolves to be friends with, I pick the leader’s son? Well, I guess he picked me. Did he think I was another wolf?’ Seto thought to himself as Jounouchi pet one of his cheeks before touching his ears again. It felt nice so he didn’t bother to stop the wolf.
Ka glanced back over to his son and the human. Did the human really have no idea about their mating rituals? He knew Jounouchi had wanted to mate with someone from another pack, but he hadn’t counted on this. They were a monogamous species and it would break his son’s heart to know the male wouldn’t be there permanently. He had to make sure that nothing happened between them, for the safety of his son and for their pack.

Author’s note: Ok, I lied. This story just sort of came out like this and it looks like there will have to be a continuation. I won’t leave you all hanging with it, but give me some time. For those that want to know, the animal I modeled Jounouchi’s pack after is called the Andean Wolf. It’s supposed to be a legend/myth, but people say it’s actually a fox. I decided they were an evolution of the original “findings” of the animal. All mating rituals have been a process of my own doing and of that of other wolves that I have looked up. Seto is in the upper area of the Amazon and not too far from the true home of the Andean Wolf, the Andes. I’ll get more into the pack in the next installment, but for those wondering, the sounds they make are totally made up. The Latin, however, are things I looked up: Pater is father; Mater is mother; Soror is sister; and Amicus is (male) friend. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed and hope to see you again next time!
