J is for Jacket
When Seto and Mokuba arrived from work early that evening, it was to find the mansion in disarray. The ground floor rooms looked like a tornado had ripped through them; the worst was the kitchen. Every cabinet was open and everything spilled everywhere. They took one look at each other.
“Joey.”They split up to search for him. The second floor was just as bad as the ground floor. Seto was going to wring the dog’s neck when he found him. The place was a horrid mess. It would take forever to clean. When he walked into his room, he spotted a pair of sneakered feet sticking out from under their shared bed. Seto placed his bag down on his desk quietly and shut the door without alerting the blonde. He crept up onto his prey with a plan in action. As he neared the bed, he could hear Joey mumbling something from under the bed.Underneath the bed, Joey had a flashlight in one hand while searching with the other.“It has to be under here. God knows how many times I’ve kicked it after Kaiba’s got a hold of me,” Joey mumbled. He dropped the flashlight with a loud yelp when his ankles were suddenly grabbed and he was yanked out from under the bed. Joey sat woozy on the bed. His stomach did flip flops as he stared up through the flashing dots at the irritable face of his lover.Seto had yanked him out, pulled him up and spun him around before planting him down on the bed. Now he stood towering over his younger lover.“What the Hell are you doing?” Seto demanded.Joey had the decency to look ashamed. He lowered his head with a quiet sigh.“I lost something,” Joey answered.Seto snorted. “I would have never guessed. Is it perhaps your sanity?”Joey wrapped an arm around his stomach and turned his head away. Seto stood back with his arms crossed over his chest with a cross look on his face.“Joey! The place is a mess. Whatever it is you’ve lost, you know I can pay to replace it,” Seto told him.“It ain’t that easy,” Joey murmured.Seto scoffed. He turned around to walk over to his desk.“Bullshit. Tell me what you lost and I’ll order a new one. You clean up this mess you made.”“NO.”Seto stopped and turned back around. Joey was standing with his head down and his hands clenched at his sides. He lifted his head enough for Seto to see his lover glaring at him.“You can’t fix this by throwing yer money around. There are some things you can’t replace.” Sniff. “You can’t replace my jacket.”Jacket? Joey’s green jacket? Seto rolled his eyes. The mutt was making a mountain out of a molehill.“You’re an idiot. You don’t think I can replace a measly jacket? That thing is ratty and old anyway. The maid probably put it out of its misery and burned it.”Seto stumbled backwards into the desk, a hand flying up to his cheek. Joey had stormed across the room so quickly it wasn’t any wonder how he had managed to smack him in the face. He heard the bedroom door slam open and his lover disappeared out the door.Seto stood leaning against his desk with a stunned look on his face. Joey hadn’t hit him in years. Not since they had started dating. Sure, he nudged him sometimes with an elbow but that was to get his attention. He knew from the stinging pain that it would be a heck of a bruise later. He just couldn’t understand what the big deal was. He was broken out of his thoughts when he heard an odd tapping sound from the computer. Looking over at the desktop computer, Seto saw an open Skype window, showing there was a video call coming in. He accepted the call and was surprised to see Serenity pop up on the screen.Until he remembered that she called every night at this time. Serenity looked visibly confused to see him, but she smiled nonetheless.“Hi, Seto. Where’s Joey?” Serenity asked.Seto held back a grimace. Joey would be hurt even more to hear he had missed his sister. He treasured these times with his younger sister like Seto did with Mokuba. Seto sat down with a gloomy smile on his face.“I’m sorry, Serenity. He just left and I don’t know where he’s gone,” Seto said, honestly.Serenity frowned. “What? But why would he do that?”Seto related the recent events to her, excluding the part where Joey slapped him. When he finished, Serenity smiled sadly.“Oh, Seto. Joey didn’t tell you his jacket is special to him, did he?” Serenity asked.Seto shook his head.“I don’t understand what’s special about it,” Seto told her.Serenity sighed.“I’m not surprised. I don’t think Joey’s talked about it for a long time. Seto, that jacket belonged to our grandfather. He gave it to Joey just before our parents divorced and…before he passed away from cancer in the hospital. Joey was very closed to him.”The teenage CEO pinched the bridge of his nose and lowered his head. Seto felt like a complete and utter ass. Now that was normally how a lot of people saw him, but this was the first time he actually felt it was true. Now everything made sense to him.“Do you know where he would have gone?” Seto asked.Serenity smiled./……/
In Loving Memory. Joey lightly ran his fingers over the letters. He reached out to pull away some leaves before setting down some sunflowers by the tombstone. He stood up and shoved his hands into his jeans pockets.
“Hey, Coach. I’m sorry I ain’t been around fer a while. Life got real real fast. Just like you said it did,” Joey said.He sighed quietly as a light breeze blew by.“I’m twenty now. I graduated high school and I’m going to school. I’m working real hard, Coach. Just like ya always told me to. I guess somewhere along the lines I forgot about that.” He smiled. “But someone snapped to muh senses.”A tear fell down his face and he sniffed loudly. His eyes were tearing up and his nose was starting to stuff up. His bottom lip quivered as he spoke.“I-I met s-s-someone. That l-l-likes me for m-me. Rough sides and all.” Chuckle. “You’d really like him, Coach. Doesn’t take any b-b-bull from anyone. Just like you.”Suddenly, Joey couldn’t control himself. The floodgates opened and tears flowed freely down his face. Joey lowered his head. He stood there shaking and quietly sobbing. He wasn’t surprised when a strong pair of arms came around him and pulled him close to a hard chest. Joey turned his head and sobbed into his lover’s chest. Seto gently lowered them to the ground, pulling his crying puppy into his lap. Joey curled up in his lap clutching his shirt and just crying his heart out.Seto held his lover tightly against him. Silently, he tried to absorb all the pain out of the poor blonde. He would do nearly anything to just take all the pain and tears from his lover. He slipped a hand up into his puppy’s golden hair and stroked it as he rocked the special package in his arms.Soon Joey’s sobs turned into sniffles. Seto looked down at the tombstone and smiled softly.“Joseph? Puppy, were you named after your grandfather?” Seto whispered.Joey turned his head so his cheek rested on his chest and his gaze followed that of his lover’s. He smiled weakly.“Yeah. I guess that’s why him and me were so close. He’s the one who got everyone calling me Joey.” Sniff. “I miss him, Set.”Seto pressed a soft but firm kiss to the top of his head.“I’m sorry, puppy. I didn’t know the jacket was his. You missed your sister’s Skype call and she told me about it,” Seto told him.Joey leaned back in Seto’s arms. He brought a soft hand up to the growing bruise on Seto’s cheek. He would make his apologies to his sister later; he knew she would understand. The blonde leaned forward to press a light kiss on the abused skin.“I’m sorry, dragon. I wasn’t mad at you. I was mad at myself. I told Coach I’d take care of his jacket…until I saw him again,” Joey confessed.Seto smiled gently as he leaned his forehead against his puppy’s. The puppy returned the smile.“You call your grandfather Coach?” Seto whispered.Joey’s smile grew.“Yeah. He coached a lotta different sports when he was alive. Football, basketball, lacrosse…Hell, I think he even coached dancing once.”Seto found himself chuckling. Serenity had described the grandfather as a big, muscular type of guy; the tough bear type with a gentle soul. The image of a big man like that coaching something as mundane as dancing made him chuckle.“We’ll find it, pup. Even if I have to turn the whole city on its head. I promise.”Joey grinned before pulling his lover’s head down to kiss him. He had no doubt that his lover would do just that.Author’s Note: Would you believe that I found myself crying when Joey started crying? I’m still having some difficulties with letters N - O - P.
