“Dad, I’m
home!” hollered Jou, as he pushed the main door closed with his shoulder. There
was no reply, and Katsuya remembered that his father had a job interview
tonight.
Ever since
the..kitchen incident, his father’s behaviour had drastically changed.
Instead of
slothing around in bed till way past noon, then spending the rest of the day in
front of the TV, until the bars opened and he could drink himself into a
stupor, he now got up every morning at 08.00am sharp, phoning around for a job,
any kind of work.
He had also
started training Kenpo again, a development Katsuya watched with mixed
feelings.
But what
worried the blond youth the most, was the different relationship, he now shared
with his father.
After the
fight he had hoped, they could make a clean slate and start new, but he was
missled.
The wake-up
call came last week, when his father returned home, depressed from another
disencouraging job interview. Wanting to comfort him, Jou had risen his hand
to pat the older man’s shoulder.
His breath
had caught in his throath, when he had seen his father flinch and draw back
slightly, a strange, haunted gleam in his chestnut-brown eyes. Katsuya’s heart
nearly broke, when he recognized the look.
Fear.
His own
father feared him.
Slowly
letting his hand fall to his side, Katsuya had searched his father’s face and
eyes for a moment, before bowing his head and trudging to his room, defeat
surrounding him like a dark cloak.
Ever since,
Jou had taken to make slow, tentative movements around his father and
adressing him as respectfully, as possible, anything
that his father would not feel challenged in his role as the superior and
first in charge.
Jounouchi
senior acknowledged and appreciated this, but sometimes, when they sat together
for dinner or he thought, his son wasn’t looking, Katsuya could feel his
father’s gaze upon him; searching, asking, judging, dreading, probing,
analyzing, weighing-wondering…
It was
enough to drive the teenager from their shared meals, causing him to lock
himself inside his room until he had to get ready to meet Fukuda-san...it was
no wonder he rarely ate, the worry about his father and their continuous
estrangement robbed him of his usually healthy appetite.
Still,
Sugawara-san had a point and so, tonight, Jou fixed dinner for his father
before heading for his room, balancing a tray loaded with miso soup, sandwiches
and a pot of tea through their small appartment.
Perhaps the
food might help him solve that last Arythmethic riddle he couldn’t wrap his
mind about.
Whack!
If anyone
saw him like this, they would have Fukuda-san arrested on the spot for
attempted felonious assault.
Thruth be
told, the bamboo stick barely touched Jou’s shoulder, he would have probably
felt a fingertap stronger than this fake blow. But the staff had a usefull side-effect, it caused an eerie, whining, very unnerving swoosh when it cut
through the air.
And that
was all, what this action was about:
Distraction.
At the
moment, Katsuya sat cross-legged on a small bamboo mat, translating Kanji into
English letters, his pen never wavering, his eyes never leaving the pages of
the book.
Fukuda-san
smiled contented. He was rather proud of his pupil.
When he
first started training him, three weeks ago, every stray cat mewling in the
alleys, every passing car managed to rattle Katsuya’s concentration. It was
almost impossible for him to keep focus.
That was,
until Fukuda-san found a way to make him understand:
*~”Look at
it this way, Katsuya: when you’re tired and you want to sleep, on what do you
concentrate?” he asked.
Scratching
his head, the boy replied:
“Uhh, not
much, actually, I’m just glad to be in my own bed, enjoying my soft pillow and
blanket-“
His mentor
waved off, sighing, thinking of another possibility to make Jou see what he
meant.
“Let’s try
a different approach: when you eat, do you like to indulge in conversation as
well?”
Katsuya
gave a sheepish laugh, when he answered:
“To be
honest, when I see food everything else isn’t important to me anymore. I’m so
focused on my plate, that I-!”
Golden eyes
widened in realization and Fukuda-san nodded in agreement.
“You have
learned, Jounouchi-kun. Now, time has come to learn.”~*
And that’s
what he had done every night since, never missing one single appointment with
Fukuda-san.
His marks
were gradually rising, as did his concentration, and since he could focus better
while at work, his paycheck had also grown considerably.
But as
always, for every problem solved two new ones appear, and Katsuya knew he had
to unravel his current ones asap.
It was only
a matter of time, until more trouble would come his way.
Every
sinlge fibre of his being told him so.
