Chapter 10: Malik & Ryou’s past
By Yami Kitsune
Malik was walking around out side thinking, wondering how things had gotten so crazy in his life. He chuckled quietly, the answer to that was easy. He had accepted a gift from a vampire, an eternal gift. He had had no family and was living on the streets sense he was two years old, he would go around stealing food from windows when people would put bread of pies there to cool.
Malik walked through the woods, he could hear and sense someone following him but he didn’t care right now. As he walked through the woods the person following him got closer. After a while it started to get annoying.
“Why don’t you just come out and show your self already!” He snapped.
“So you could sense me.” Marik said as he came out from behind a tree.” Malik just glared at him.
“What the hell do you want?” Malik hissed bearing his fangs.
“I only want to talk, nothing more.” Marik said holding his hands up in defense. Malik slowly relaxed and turned away from him. He looked up at the trees and sighed.
“What do you want to talk about?”
“I have been watching you sense you came, and I noticed how Ryou and Yugi look up to you. You seem to be the leader of your little group.” Marik said walking over to Malik.
“You could say that I am the leader…we don’t really have a leader, we are just really good friends. And because I am the oldest I look out for the other to…” Malik said glancing over his shoulder at Marik. “Why do you want to know this any way?” Malik asked a bit confused why a hunter would even care.
“You just seem to be depressed all the time.”
“Well wouldn’t you be if you were a vampire for over 100 years? It tends to get boring.” Malik said walking over to a tree and sitting down next to it. Marik followed and sat next to him.
“Over 100 years old huh? How were you changed in the first place?” Marik asked still being very curious. Malik sighed and looked at the ground finding it very interesting. Malik closed his eyes and tried to remember that day.
~*Flash Back*~
Malik looked around and made sure no one was looking as he reached up to the windowsill and grabbed the bread that had been cooling there. After he grabbed it he ran down the street and into an ally where he could eat.
“What do we have here? A street rat?” A voice asked as a man stepped out of the shadows. Malik looked at him with wide eyes, was this man going to punish him for stealing?
“Don’t worry kid, this won’t hurt....much.” The man moved like the wind, and before Malik knew it he was pined against the wall and the man’s teeth were digging into his neck making the blood flow. It was only a few minutes before Malik felt his body go limp.
The vampire let go of him and he slid down the wall staring blankly up at the vampire. Malik tried to move away when the vampire knelt down in front of him and smiled. Reaching out a hand he stocked Malik’s cheek.
“So soft…can’t let this go to waste, now can I?” Malik looked at the vampire in confusion. “Don’t worry little one, I am going to give you a gift. Probably the only, and best, gift you will ever resave.” The vampire brought his own wrist to his mouth and bit it making himself bleed. He pressed it against Malik’s mouth. “Drink it.” Malik made no move to take it.
“Look little one, you can drink it and accept the best gift ever. Or refuse it and die in pain.” The vampire hissed. Malik slowly took the wrist and drank the vampire’s blood. He didn’t know what was in store for him next, and if he had known then he would have never taken the ‘gift’
~*End flashback*~
Malik snorted. “Some gift. It was pretty cool for the first few years, and then I ran into my first hunter.”
“I am guessing he didn’t live long?” Marik asked. Malik chuckled and shook his head.
“No he didn’t, but I still say that was his own fault! He was the one who was trying to hunt, when he was drunk!” Marik had to laugh at that, only a complete idiot would try and hunt right after drinking. Even vampires can get drunk, if they drink enough.
“Well, what about your family? Did they ever find out?” Marik asked, and realized he had asked the wrong thing when Malik turned his head away from him.
“I don’t remember my family…and what I do remember I would rather forget. Yugi and Ryou are my family now.” Marik put a hand on his shoulder, he understood what it was like not to have a family. Malik turned towards him and gave him a small smile.
“We better get back before the others wonder what we’re up to.” Marik joked and Malik nodded. They both stood up and went back to the cabin.

Bakura sat in the chair and watched Ryou as the small vampire read a book he had found. He seemed to be healing very quickly, well that was mostly thanks to Malik. But Ryou was getting his strength back quickly. Bakura sighed and leaned back in the chair closing his eyes. He started humming a song he remembered his mother used to sing to him. He couldn’t remember all of the words to it, but the melody he had never forgotten.
Ryou looked up from his book and over to where Bakura was sitting when he heard the silver haired hunter start humming a tune. Ryou listened more closely and his eyes went wide when he recognized the song. His grandmother had sung it to him whenever he was sad, or hurt after his father had beaten him. He would sneak out and go down the street to his grandmother’s house. Tears filled Ryou’s eyes when he remembered the last time his grandmother had song him that song.
~*Flash Back*~
Ryou sat in the living room reading a new book he had been given for his birthday. He hadn’t had a chance to read it yet because his father was always home. And when his father was home, Ryou would either go down the street and stay with his grandmother, or hide up in his room.
Ryou put the book back down after reading the first page; he just couldn’t get into it. It was a really good book but he was worried about his grandmother. She had been sick for the past month and kept getting worse. Ryou sighed and stood up going over to the coat rack and grabbing his coat. He put it on and went outside and down the street.
He would go see how his grandmother was doing, and see if she needed any thing. Just as Ryou was walking up to the house the doctor came out. He smiled at Ryou and walked over to him.
“Hello little Ryou, and how are you today? No more bruises I hope?” He asked. Ryou smiled and shook his head, his father had left a couple days ago and hadn’t been back. But he wasn’t about to tell any one that because then they would take him away. And with his grandmother sick he knew he wouldn’t be able to stay with her.
“No sir, my father hasn’t hit me in almost a week.” The doctor nodded and patted Ryou on the head.
“Your grandmother has been asking for you. Go in and see her. And I will see you later little one.” The doctor said his good-byes to Ryou and walked down the street to his house. Ryou was very happy that the doctor lived on the same street; it made it very easy for him if he needed to be patched up. Besides his grandmother, the doctor was the only one that knew about Ryou's dad hitting him. But Ryou made him sware not to tell any one.
Ryou walked into the house and hung up his coat. Looking around he realized that there were no candles lit, except for in his grandmothers room. He slowly walked in and saw her sitting up in bead.
“Grandmother?” Ryou asked shyly. She looked over and smiled at him waving him in. She patted the side of the bed next to her. Ryou smiled and came in the rest of the way, going over and sitting on the side of her bead.
“How are you my little angel?”
“I am fine grandmother. Father left a couple days ago and hasn’t come back yet.” Ryou said.
“That’s good dear, at least you are getting a break, I am sorry I can not protect you as much as I used too." She said and coughed lightly. Ryou frowned a little, something didn’t feel right. “Don’t look that way Ryou, you always have had a sixth-sense for when bad things are going to happen. I don’t want you to worry about it alright?” She asked and Ryou nodded slowly, although he couldn’t help it. She coughed again and shivered.
“Ryou, angel would you hand me that blanket at the end of the bed? It is getting chilly in here.” Ryou did as he was asked; he tried hard not to show the tears that were forming in his eyes. He knew what was happing; it wasn’t cold in here at all. In fact it was very warm.
“Can I get you any thing grandmother?” He asked as he covered her with the blanket.
“No, thank you angel.” She smiled coughing again. “Come up here with me.” She said holding out her arms. Ryou smiled and crawled back up on the bed and lay down next to her. She smiled at him and started humming a soft toon. Ryou smiled and hummed along with her. THere were no words to the song, but it was a nice song.
Ryou finished singing and looked at his grandmother she smiled at him weakly.
“I love you Ryou, my little angle." With that she closed her eyes and her chest stilled. Ryou’s eyes went wide and tears fell as he realized what happened.
“No grandmother! Please don’t leave me…” Ryou cried.
~*End flashback*~
Ryou sat there on the couch tears streaming down his face. He had forgotten, how could he have forgotten?! He remembered staying there with her for days before the doctor came over again to check on her. He had found Ryou lying on her bed sleeping, Ryou hadn’t moved from that spot. He had refused to leave his grandmother's side. He hadn't even moved to eat, the doctor had him rused to the hospital, where the vampire found him. It had been watching him and decided to end his pain. But changed his mind at the last minute and made Ryou a vampire as well.
Ryou felt the book he was holding slip from his fingers and drop to the floor. He just continued to stare, tears streaming down his face. Bakura jumped when he heard the book fall to the floor. He looked around before his eyes settled on Ryou.
“Ryou…are you alright?” Bakura asked. He stood up and walked over putting a hand on Ryou’s shoulders. He gasped when Ryou looked up at him and he saw the vampire’ tears.
“Ryou what is it? Is something wrong? Why are you crying?”ura ura asked sitting on the couch next to the sobbing vampire who just through his arms around Bakura and cried on his chest. Startled Bakura didn’t know what to do, so he just wrapped his arm around Ryou and held him close.
“Shh…it’s alright.” Bakura soothed wondering just what had made the little one act like this. Ryou stopped after a few minutes and looked up at Bakura who had a worried look on his face.
“Now, you ganna tell me what that was about?” He asked.
“That…that song you were humming. Where did you hear it?” Ryou asked.
“Huh? That’s why you were crying? If it made you sad I wont…” Bakura was cut off when Ryou covered his mouth with his hand.
“That’s not what made me sad, just please, tell me where you heard it. It is very important.”
“I don't know, I heard it somewhere before and it has been stuck in my head since.” Bakura said and looked back down at Ryou who had fallen asleep in Bakura’s arms. Bakura smiled and shook his head, he tried to get up but Ryou held onto him tightly making it so he couldn’t go anywhere. Sighing Bakura lay down on the couch and pulled Ryou close soon dozing off as well.
