“Kaiba…Joey’s been arrested. He’s in jail awaiting trial for the murder of his father.”Seto had been fed up with not seeing Joey for several days. He had come storming through the office, intent on interrogating attendance what excuse Joey had sent in, when he had found Yugi sitting there. The short man was in the office for fighting with another student who had made a comment about Joey. Seto had demanded to know from him where the mutt was and Yugi had told him flat out.Seto stormed out of the school and to his limo. As the limo rolled out of the school, Seto pulled out his laptop and hacked into the law enforcement’s database. He quickly located the case file. He sped read through all the information, analyzed the photos, and made notes to himself in a notepad. The case was a joke. How they considered Joey guilty was beyond him. He was displeased to see that a public defender was assigned to defend Joey. Seto whipped out his cell phone and hit the speed dial on number three. He only had to wait until someone picked up on the second ring.“Good morning, Seto. What can I do for you today?”“Good morning, Lawrence. I have a case I want you to take a look at.”/……/
The public defender was a bumbling youngster who couldn’t be much older than his middle child. Lawrence stood in the doorway, watching the “lawyer” as he dropped papers all over the table. Joey Wheeler had his head lowered to his chest and his hair hid his face. He had one hand resting on the table while the other was tucked into his shirt pocket.
The older lawyer pushed his glasses up and closed the door loudly behind him. The public defender nearly jumped out of his own skin while Joey didn’t move a muscle. The younger stared at him in awe.“Mr……M-Mr. Gilliam, sir. What can I d-do for you?” the public defender asked.Lawrence frowned. He didn’t like that Joey hadn’t looked up or spoken since he had been standing in the doorway for ten minutes.“You can start by leaving my client alone. Your services are no longer needed,” Lawrence said in a clear, strong voice. The public defender stuttered to a response until Lawrence held up his hand.“Mr. Wheeler, I’m Lawrence Gilliam from the Gilliam, Rovis, and Santos firm. I would like to work your case pro bono. Money isn’t an issue here. However, you can keep Mr. Fish as your lawyer, if you so desire. Do you wish to retain him as your lawyer?”The public defender gaped when Joey’s only visible hand flicked at him in an obvious dismissal sign. Lawrence turned to flash him a smirk.“You heard my client. Out.”The public defender muttered a few unsavory comments as he gathered his things and left the room. Lawrence set his bag down on the table and grabbed the back of the chair. He pulled it over to sit on the side by Joey.“Mr. Wheeler, you should know that my firm represents a certain powerful CEO who only recently heard of your predicament. Your best friend informed him only just this morning,” Lawrence told him.Joey turned his head slightly but didn’t lift it to look at the lawyer. Lawrence found this behavior very odd. Seto had warned him of how violent and upset the blonde may react; he was seeing the exact opposite of what he had been expecting.“Mr. Wheeler, is it all right if I call you by your given name?” Lawrence asked, reaching into his bag for a pad of paper and a pen.He saw a small movement of Joey’s head go up and down. Lawrence clicked his pen open and rested his hand on the pad.“Joey, I’d like to hear your details of what happened the night your father was murdered.”He waited, trying to give the young man time to think about his answer. He gave him longer time than he would any other client. The lawyer understood things were probably very hard for the youth. However, after ten minutes of silence, Lawrence spoke again as he slid the pad and pen over to Joey.“Would you feel better if you wrote it down?” Lawrence asked. At first, Joey didn’t do anything. Then he slowly reached out to pick up the pen. Lawrence watched the pen shakily jerk across the paper. He reached out to hold down the pad to assist the youth. When Joey finished and laid the pen down, Lawrence shifted the pad so he could see the words. In almost illegible writing, it said: Can’t write. Wrong hand.Lawrence was alarmed by this. His gaze shot to the hidden hand. Why on Earth would Joey be writing with his non-dominant hand? Unless…“Joey, may I see your dominant hand?”He watched silently as Joey brought his non-dominant hand over to his other arm. He grasped above the wrist and slowly pulled his hand out. Lawrence gasped. Joey’s dominant hand had bad scarring over it and bandages haphazardly wrapped around it. It was no wonder the boy kept his hand hidden; he couldn’t use it!“Joey, has the nurse here taken a look at that? Did one of the other juveniles do this? Why haven’t you said anything?” Lawrence asked. The middle-aged lawyer got his second shock of the afternoon when Joey lifted his head. The boy’s left side of his face had a nasty black eye on it and other bruising. He had a cut bottom lip and a small bandage over the bridge of his nose. The most shocking part of this sight was the bandaging across the front of Joey’s throat.“You can’t speak, can you?” Lawrence asked.Joey nodded. The deep cuts to his throat prevented him from being able to speak. His public defender hadn’t understood that and had kept questioning him, as if expecting him to be able to speak. Lawrence brought a hand up to gently touch Joey’s shoulder.“Joey, was it the other juveniles?” Lawrence asked.Joey slowly shook his head. He tapped his finger on the bandages. Lawrence frowned.“One of the juveniles…gave you the bandages?” Lawrence questioned.Joey nodded. Lawrence then asked him how he obtained his injuries. Joey opened his mouth and mouthed something, but it was lost on the lawyer. Joey held out his uninjured hand and gestured for Lawrence’s hand. Lawrence held out his hand palm up for the teen.Using the nail of his middle finger, Joey traced letters into the center of his palm. Despite the ticklish sensations it shot through his hand, Lawrence paid careful attention to the letters.G-u-a-r-d-s. Guards? Wait a minute. GUARD?! Lawrence’s head snapped up with his eyes burning in fury.“Are you certain? Absolute certain?” He hated to ask, but he had to make sure.Joey surprised him by showing him his injured hand. At first he saw nothing. However, upon closer inspection, the lawyer saw that there was something his nails. Whoever had attacked the blonde, Joey had retaliated by getting something off of them.“You’re a smart young lad, Joey,” Lawrence told him.Lawrence reached into his bag and pulled out his cell phone. He hit his speed dial and pulled his phone up to bring it to his ear.“Hello, Samuel. We have a serious problem here at the Center. Send Patrick with my bag. Tell him to bring his kit and camera. Yes. Yes, that’s what it looks like. Oh, wait! Tell him to bring the iPad, too. How long will it take him? That long, huh? Okay, just a minute.”“Joey?”Joey, who had begun staring off in a corner, turned his tired gaze back to the lawyer. He was surprised to hear the lawyer ask him if he was hungry. He nodded and moved his good hand in the motion of lifting a spoon from a bowl.“What kind of soup, Joey?”Lawrence let out a small chuckle when Joey drew his good arm in to flap it up and down like a bird.“Chicken noodle? Okay. Do you think you can manage some bread, too?” Nod.Lawrence added the dinner orders to the list before closing his phone. Lawrence reached out to grasp Joey’s good hand.“I’m not going anywhere, Joey. They can lock me in here all night, but I’m not leaving you where you have only the other juveniles to depend on.”The side of Joey’s face twitched up into a smile, despite the small jolt of pain. He closed his eyes briefly in relief. Maybe hope wasn’t lost after all./……/
“I beg your pardon?!”
The lawyer leveled a glare at the Assistant District Attorney.“You heard me, Tom. You drop these charges or there will be trouble. Joey Wheeler did not murder his father and the guards in the juvenile detention facility have abused their power. The boy is injured and has received no medical attention from the nursing staff.”The ADA snorted. “Wheeler has a history of being a pathological liar and faking injuries in school. Besides, my detectives have a rock solid case against him. We are going to trial.”The lawyer shook his head. “Very well, Tom. We’ll see you in court.”/……/
“All rise! The honorable Judge Marks presiding.”
A tall, middle-aged woman stepped up to the judge’s seat and sat down. Everyone sat down as she picked up the gavel. She looked down at the two benches and was surprised by what she saw. On the defense’s side, she saw not one, but three lawyers alongside the defendant. And the defendant looked as though he’d been tossed against a wall a few dozen times.“Mr. Gilliam, I was not aware you and your partners worked cases together. That seems more Supreme Court than my little courtroom,” Judge Marks remarked with a small smile.Lawrence smiled grimly.“This case warrants all of our presences, Your Honor. I move to have the remand removed due to the abuse of power in the juvenile detention facility which resulted in severe injuries to our client. I also move to have the case dismissed due to lack of irrefutable evidence.”The ADA shot up to his feet before the judge could even speak.“Objection, Your Honor. There is no proof that the guards in the juvenile detention facility did the damage done to Mr. Wheeler. He could be covering up for one of his juvenile buddies. As for the evidence, Mr. Wheeler’s blood was found by his father’s body and his handprint was found on the knife that was still lodged in the body,” the ADA protested.Lawrence’s smile was like that of a shark when he turned to smile at the“Actually, Your Honor, I have documented photos of Mr. Wheeler’s injuries and DNA evidence implementing one of the guards as Mr. Wheeler’s attacker. I also have written testimony from one of the other guards that witnessed the attack,” Lawrence argued. The judge nodded. “I would like to review that documentation, Mr. Gilliam, and I will make my decision this afternoon. In the meantime, the defendant is remanded to the juvenile detention facility. Bailiff, please remove the defendant.”She banged the gavel down. She missed the wide-eyed stare that Joey shot her. She didn’t, however, miss that Lawrence walked alongside Joey as the bailiff escorted him out. This was highly unusual. It wasn’t unheard of but highly unusual. The bailiff led Joey and Lawrence out a back door to a van that would take him straight back to the facility. Lawrence insisted that the bailiff not handcuff his hands, due to his injury. The bailiff, being a sympathetic man and not blind to the injury, agreed to it as he loaded them into the van.Lawrence was surprised when Joey motioned with his hand. He made a swiping motion like a person would when turning on an iPad. Lawrence reached into his bag and pulled out the iPad. He rested it on Joey’s lap. The youth turned the power on, swiped to get to the main screen, and immediately opened the notes app.Lawrence watched Joey’s fingers skim over the letters. This allowed him to speak to his lawyer a lot quicker than with writing with his non-dominant hand. When done, Joey shifted the iPad so his lawyer could see it. Lawrence’s eyebrows shot up into his hairline.“You’re sure?” Lawrence whispered.Joey nodded his head. He was absolutely sure. He wasn’t surprised when Lawrence pulled out his phone to call his firm partners.“Hank? Yeah, it’s me. We’re on our way back to the Center now. Joey just told me an interesting piece of news I think you should know.”/……/
Despite the warden’s protests that Lawrence leave, the lawyer was once again staying in the small cell room with his client. Joey was lying on his bed staring up at the ceiling when Lawrence got a text message. Lawrence frowned when he saw the message. Joey sat up and looked at him questioningly.
“Judge Marks found the evidence of your attack insufficient and it not convinced that the evidence doesn’t prove you guilty. You will remain here and the trial will proceed,” Lawrence said.Joey lay back down with a loud sigh. He was beginning to think he might never get out. The only comfort in here was that he wasn’t alone and his hand was properly bandaged now.Lawrence let out an equally loud sigh. Normally, he didn’t get close to clients, but this one was different. Joey was being wronged by the justice system, because of his past. The lawyer opened his email and noticed that Seto had sent him an email. It said there was a video link for Joey to watch.Lawrence stood up from his chair and brought the iPad over to Joey. He tapped the play button for the video and held it out to him. Joey took the iPad and leaned it on his chest. A small smile appeared on his face when he saw all his friends on the video. Yugi was in the center, waving his hand back and forth.“Hi, Joey. We’re all rooting for you. We don’t believe you did this,” Yugi said. His friends were holding signs saying things like Free Joey! Tristan piped up next while hanging on Duke who looked annoyed.“Hey, J! You tell that ADA to shove it. He don’t got a thing on you!”Joey let out a dry chuckle. His other friends said similar encouraging words to him. Then Yugi walked towards the camera and told him they had more. Joey was surprised to see the video come in between different people. Some were other duelists, but a lot were people he knew from school.“Hey, Wheeler. You’re tough. But you wouldn’t just kill a man in cold blood.” He once had bullied that guy.“You may be a little rough around the edges, Mr. Wheeler, but you’ve been doing much better in school. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.” The principal? Wow, that’s certainly a surprise.Lawrence listened as many people told Joey that he was a good person; that they knew he wouldn’t do something like this; that justice would see him through. Joey closed his eyes as tears began to run down his face. Without a word, Joey handed the iPad back to him and he rolled over on his side. The blonde’s body shook as he sobbed silently into his pillow. It broke the forty-five year old’s heart to see such a display. Joey didn’t deserve this much pain. He knew what Kaiba’s next course of action would be once Joey was free. Suddenly, a brilliant idea came to his mind. He quickly moved back over to his cot and started back to work. It was going to be a long night./……/
The trial seemed to drag on forever. Evidence was shown before the judge in the small, near empty courtroom and witnesses for the ADA, including the officers on scene, came forth. The defense provided evidence that said to the contrary of the ADA’s evidence. They had only one witness.
“Defense, you may call your witness,” Judge Marks said.Lawrence glanced over his shoulder to nod at the court officer. The court officer nodded his head and opened the door partially to speak to someone. Lawrence turned his head back to Judge Marks.“I call to the witness stand, Seto Kaiba.”Judge Marks wasn’t the only one who appeared surprise. The ADA’s head snapped to the back of the room as the teen CEO stepped into the room. Seto ignored both tables as he walked through them and up to the witness stand. The bailiff swore him in and then stepped away.Lawrence walked from around the table and stepped into Seto’s line of sight.“Mr. Kaiba, where were you on September 16?” Lawrence asked.Seto turned a bored look to the ADA who nearly flinched.“I was at Kaiba Corp. I spent the morning in meetings. Then I went to lunch with Wheeler. After lunch, he came back with me to Kaiba Corp. He was beta testing for me all afternoon and into the evening. He left around eleven,” Seto answered. It was in the documents that Joey’s father had died at ten-thirty; police had arrived on scene at eleven-thirty, due to an anonymous tip. The ADA shot up to his feet.“Objection, Your Honor. We are going by the testimony of someone who attends school with the defendant. He could simply be lying for his friend.”Seto surprised everyone by letting out a short snort.“Wheeler and I are not friends,” he said, simply.Lawrence nodded in agreement before turning around to go back to his table and pick up some papers.“Your Honor, I have written testimonials and documentations from the Domino High Administration. In the last two years, Misters Wheeler and Kaiba have been pulled apart from over twenty fights. For the last two months, they have been in a mandatory weekly session with the Guidance Counselor to talk out their issues.”Lawrence walked up to the judge’s stand and handed her the papers. She perused them before handing them. She banged her gavel while shifting her gaze to the ADA.“Objection overruled. You may proceed with your witness, Defense.”Lawrence smiled and nodded his head to Seto.“Thank you, Mr. Kaiba. That’ll be all.”Seto nodded his head to him before stepping down./……/
On the last day of the trial, only Lawrence sat at the defense table with Joey. When asked about the other two lawyers, Lawrence smiled at the judge and said, “Food poisoning.” There were a few more people sitting in the courtroom today. Lawrence assured the Judge it was investigators from his firm.
The ADA had just finished his closing arguments and sat down. Lawrence stood with the practiced ease of an experienced lawyer. He had a bailiff wheel in a project he had set up to a laptop with a live video feed. He projected it onto a blank wall where everyone could see.The first part of the video showed an empty building with empty halls and rooms.“This is Domino High. It’s not a school holiday and yet there is not a single student or faculty member in it. The Principal is on suspended pay for cancelling school, but he said it’s well worth it. And where are the students today?”Lawrence smiled and clicked a button. The new video feed showed a large gathering of students on the courtroom steps. They were holding signs and sitting on the steps of the courtroom. There were some spots in the crowd that were open for people to go up and through.“70% of the students and faculty of Domino High are outside these very steps. And why? Because of the young man sitting right there. The former delinquent and gang member has become a symbol that people look up to.”Lawrence typed in a few commands. Several small windows appeared with different people found in the crowd. Some younger and some older than high school students.“Joey Wheeler has worked his way through the ranks as a duel monsters duelist. Playing the role as the underdog, he inspires others. Why then would he choose to throw his life away with murder? Joey doesn’t have the motive and the evidence is shotty. Joey is the victim. A victim of the system.”The Judge reviewed over the notes and deliberated, but not nearly long enough in Joey’s opinion. He watched silently as the Judge returned and sat down.“Will the defendant please rise?” Judge Marks stated.Lifting his head, Joey stood up beside his lawyer.“On the count of murder in the second degree, I find the defendant, Joey Wheeler…guilty.”To the great surprise of the ADA and Judge, neither Joey nor Lawrence seemed surprised. They, however, were surprised when the investigators stood and brandished badges.“Judge Helena Marks, you’re under arrest,” they said. The Judge stuttered and the ADA stared as the federal officers swept in to take her into custody. Lawrence chuckled as the last “investigator” stepped up.“Defendant Joey Wheeler, I find you not guilty.”The ADA openly gaped at the disguised judge. He gaped even more when Lawrence explained that Judge Marks held prejudice over Joey due to her daughter being the victim of a gang shooting. She should have never been judging him. Also, the firm’s investigators had found further evidence that implemented someone else in the murder and had taken it to the federal officers.“You see, my boys did your job for you. The police here are also prejudiced on Joey and the entire department is currently under investigation, including the juvenile detention facility. You’ll be pleased to hear that the guilty party was the two dirty cops that arrested my client.”Lawrence stepped forward to slap him on the shoulder.“Good luck with the press, Tom.”The ADA watched as the lawyer whispered something in Joey’s ear while gesturing over to the side door where the bailiff stood. Joey nodded his head and left through that door after shaking hands with the lawyer. Joey wasn’t surprised to meet up with Roland and Kaiba in the back hallway. They led him down the hall, down a flight of stairs and into a black SUV with tinted windows parked out back. Once the two teens were settled in the backseat, Roland pulled out from the alley and drove off. Joey leaned his head against Seto’s arm and closed his eyes. Seto slipped an arm around his waist to pull him closer.“I know you’re tired, pup. My private doctor is going to look you over at home and then you can rest,” Seto told him.Joey opened his eyes and turned his head to lock gazes with the brunette. Bringing his injured hand up, he brought it down slowly in a loose fist. Then he pointed at Seto before tapping the end of his own nose. In response, Seto rolled his eyes.“I didn’t lie to the judge. You didn’t leave me until the evening. That ‘judge’ and the ADA has no business knowing that we went to dinner between us leaving Kaiba Corp and me dropping you off.” Pause. “I’m sorry, pup. If I hadn’t gotten you mad, you would have never gone back to that apartment.”It was true. The two had secretly been dating for four months. It had been Joey’s turn to pay for dinner (at Joey’s insistence, they traded off paying). However, it had slipped Seto’s mind and he had paid the bill when Joey had gone to the bathroom. Naturally, this had upset the blonde and wound up in an argument between the two where Seto more or less figuratively threw his money in Joey’s face. Instead of staying the night at the mansion as planned, Joey had demanded Seto take him home.Joey silently slid his hand over Seto’s chest where his heart was. He tapped it twice and smiled at the brunette. Seto sighed.“I don’t see how you can forgive me. You’re in this mess because of my stubbornness,” Seto replied.A weak tap to his head caused him to chuckle.“Yes. You’ve called me an idiot more times than I can remember.”Joey shook his head with a small chuckle-like noise of his own. Seto wasn’t surprised when his puppy crawled into his lap and nuzzled his face into the CEO’s chest. He wrapped his arms around him tightly and kissed him on the cheek. He knew no amount of apologizing would make up for his actions that unintentionally ended with the blonde being injured and under arrest. As if sensing his boyfriend’s thoughts, Joey slipped up Seto’s and covered his mouth with his own. Seto let out a noise of surprise before opening his mouth to the tongue requesting entrance. Seto groaned as his puppy’s tongue tangled with his. He drew a hand up into the blonde’s hair and held on while Joey mapped out his mouth. Normally, he would have taken the “fight” to Joey, but the guilt ate at him so much that he allowed his puppy to have his fun. They kissed for what felt like an eternity before Joey finally eased off him. His breathing was a little raged, but that familiar light could be seen in his eyes.“Not…your…fault,” Joey mouthed.Seto chuckled as he smoothed a hand over his puppy’s cheek.“I love you.”Joey’s eyes lit up even more. That was the first time he had ever heard the brunette say it. Oh sure, Joey had said it a few times with a bright red face. But Seto’s response had always been, “I know, pup.” Joey had accepted that response up until now. Now, the only acceptable response would be the one Seto had just given him.Seto grunted from slight pain when his lover smashed his mouth onto his. The slight twinge of pain was worth the light he could see returning to his lover.I’ll say it every minute of every day if I have to, Seto vowed.
