13.
Whirls of auburn
Business
was slow at this time of the hour, seeing as today was a national holiday and
most people spent their time with their families, visiting shrines or staying home.
Still,
Katsuya served the few guest with the same attention, even more so, enjoying
the fact, that he had enough time to display all his entertaining skills.
Laughing
politely, he promised the client to be right back and walked into the kitchen
to hand over the orders.
Just as the
door swung closed behind him, the phone rang and Ogawa-san picked up the
reciever.
“Moshi,
moshi, here by Ogawa-ototou*, how are you? No, you know, always the same drag,
ne? Yeah, hahaha, that’s true, that’s true. And what about your own business?
Is everything working out well for you, too-What? When?”
The
gleefull tone dropped from Ogawa-san’s voice almost instantly.
For a
while, all that could be heard was the occasional, monotone ‘un’, ‘hai’, and
‘ee’, until the owner finally exclaimed:
“Shoroku,
you can’t be serious! How are you thinking of finding a decent
counselour within the next forty-eight hours?! And I do mean one,
you can afford!”
“My
father’s a counselour”, blurted Katsuya out, and regretted it the very second
the words left his mouth.
Ogawa-san
turned slowly around and stared at his youngest staff member, before saying into the
phone:
“Hold on
for a second.”
Glaring at
the fidgeting blond, he growled:
“What was
that?” Kastuya gulped and answered:
“Well, my
father used to be a counselour, before he got fired, that is. He worked for the
First National Bank-“
A large,
brawny hand stopped him mid-sentence and Ogawa-san smiled into the speaker:
“Ototou, do
you believe in miracles? Because I think, there might be one happening!”
Twelve
minutes later, Ogawa-san hung up the reciever, before placing both hands on
Katsuya’s shoulder and shaking him gently.
“You have
no idea, how much you helped my brother today, Katsuya-kun! Now all we can do,
is to wait for the outcome of the meeting, and I have a feeling, with your
father’s help, all will be well.”
He smiled
down at the teen who grinned back sheepishly(to be honest he didn’t really
feel like smiling, because his father had started yelling at him over the
phone, and then, all of a sudden, stopped his ranting. Katsuya could have
sworn, he heard his father’s heart clench in fear at what might be the result
of his outburst.)
Then his
boss frowned and said:
“Well?”
“Huh?”
replied Jou dimly.
“There are
customers out there, waiting for their meal! What are you still doing here,
staring holes in the air?” roared Ogawa-san.
Although
his expression wasn’t friendly, his tone was, and Katsuya smiled inwardly, as
he hurried to comply.
Rushing
into the dining hall, he spotted a lady in a wine-red dress with matching hat,
sitting all by herself at a table in the corner.
Swiftly
waltzing to her place, he sing-sanged:
“Good
evening, Miss and welcome at ‘Ogawa’s, how may I help-Mai?!?”
The
suggestive half-smile was unmistakable.
She had
spent the better part of the evening dining, all the while watching the blond
youth serving, joking, rushing, and, basically, working for a living.
As only
child from an old, wealthy family, it had rarely occurred to her how hard life
must be for those not born with the proverbial silver spoon in their mouth.
And yet, despite the hard work, the sometimes almost insufferable bearances,
the worries and fear, there was a profound..happiness, pride even, written in
the faces of every single member of the staff.
One she had
scarcly seen on the features of the guests attending her parents’ numerous
dinner parties.
They
appeared to be alive, but in real, they were but empty shells, ghosts wearing
the masks of the rich and powerful, although they knew, they had traded in
something irreplacable for their wealth.
Something,
that burned within Jou’s eyes and all those around him and something, she
longed for:
The joy, of
simply being alive and the pride, that comes with building a live for yourself.
They walked
in comfortable silence to the parking house where Mai had left her car,
enjoying each others’s presence.
Every now
and then, the young woman would throw a glance at the blond, taking in his
features and wondering.
It had been
nearly two months since the Battle City tournament and Jou had drastically
changed.
Not only
had she lost the height advantage over him, seeing as he now stood several
centimeters taller than her, but his blue-white t-shirt, which usually had
covered his narrow hips and flattered loosely around his body now almost clung
to him, displaying his well-defined chest and broad shoulders, the seam only
barely touching his belt.
But it was
more than just the difference in physical attributes, there was something in
the way Katsuya moved, the way he carried himself, that emitted an air of
maturity, a sense of completeness.
This was no
longer the boy she had met so long ago but a grown man.
Said man
inwardly twitched with nervousity, seeing as the woman of his dreams walked next
to him and obviously studied him intensly. Ever since they met, he had been
taken by Mai’s overall beauty and attitude, her rich, velvet voice sending
shivers down his spine everytime he heard it. Her fierceness and
self-confidence inspired him and her deep, purple eyes had captured his heart
the very instant he looked into them.
Katsuya
knew he was in love with Mai, but never had the nerve to act upon it.
And now,
she had driven all the way from her home town, just to ‘see the old gang’
again and to check on him, aswell.
The ball
was in his yard, and this time, there was no way he could avoid playing it.
Because,
there ahead of them, stood the parking house, and if he didn’t act now, Mai
would leave for good.
A sigh
escaped her, as she saw the stocky building appear before her, reminding her
that they were running out of time.
She glanced
sideways and halted her step, when she saw, that Jou was no longer walking
next to her.
Turning
around, she saw him stand there, hands buried in his pockets, bangs covering
his face.
Then he
lifted his head and Mai gasped at the expression she saw in Katsuya’s golden
eyes.
“Mai”, he
rasped, before closing the distance between them with three long strides and
lifting one hand to gently clasp her chin between his long fingers. A
shuddering breath escaped her when he drew closer and, honeyed eyes drifting
closed, whispered:
“Please
don’t leave..me, just yet. Not ever.”
A single,
happy tear trickled down Mai’s blushed cheeks, when his lips captured hers in a
long, gentle kiss.
