Dark Romance
            After getting a few hours of sleep, Yugi started waking up The air in his bedroom was
still, and the late-day heat was causing him to sweat. He rolled over to cuddle Ryou, but grabbed
nothing but a pair of jeans.

“Ryou? Where’d ya go?”
Yugi opened his eyes and sat up. He looked around his room and realized he was on the floor.
//That’s weird. I must have fallen off of the bed.// he thought to himself as he got up. He walked
over to his window and opened it up to release some of the humidity in his room. He glanced at
his alarm clock and gasp out loud.
“Oh crap! It’s 5 o’clock already! I slept right through the entire day!”
     &#      After taking a shower and getting dressed, Yugi stood in front of a full length mirror and
slipped his Millennium Puzzle around his neck.
Oddly, nothing happened.
“Yami?” Yugi called out.
No reply.
“Huh? That’s weird. Oh well, maybe he’s still pissed at me.” Yugi said to himself as he went in
search of something to eat.
He grabbed the cordless phone on his way to the kitchen. As he searched the cupboards for
something appetizing, he dialed the phone.
He reached up into the cupboard and grabbed a yellow box of cereal with a picture of a captain
in a blue hat on the front.
//Hello?// Ryou answered at the other end.
“Hey there” Yugi replied as he cleverly held onto the phone with his chin, keeping his hands free
to make his breakfast.
//Oh, hello Yugi..........look, I’m sorry I didn’t stay until you woke up, I-....//
Yugi dumped a pile of cereal into one of the ceramic mixing bowls his mother had left on
accident when she moved to Ireland. Yugi hadn’t heard from her since, so he put the bowls to a
good use.
“I’m not mad. I was just calling to thank you for staying as long as you did.”
//Oh, good.. It was no trouble at all.//
Yugi very carefully poured milk over his cereal as he talked to Ryou.
“I think I fell out of bed after you left. I woke up on the floor!” He laughed.
//On the floor? That’s odd//
Yugi took a swig of milk out of the jug and stuffed it back in the fridge.
“Yeah, I know. Oh well, at least I didn’t uh- do anything worse.”
Ryou chuckled lightly.
//That’s for sure! Look Yugi, I have to get going, I’ll talk to you later, alright?//
Yugi took a big mouthful of his “breakfast” while Ryou spoke.
“”Okay Ryou. Bye!” He crunched as he hung up.

            Ryou slowly set down the phone and looked at Malik, who was wrapped in a fuzzy red
blanket.
“That was Yugi.”
Malik didn’t reply. He stared blankly down at the floor with glazed over eyes. His platinum
locks fell over his face hiding his facial features. The Millennium Rod lay on the couch next to
him.
Ryou bit his lip.
“Malik? Are you sure you’re alright?”
Marik made a noise from the back of his throat that was reminiscent of a dog whimpering.
Ryou looked at Malik’s wrists and cringed. Fresh blood was soaking through the bandages again.
“I’m sorry Malik.......I’m so sorry.”
Malik continued to stare at the carpet in a daze.
“Hurts Ryou.......hurts bad”
“I know Malik, believe me- I know.”
Ryou got up off the couch and started pacing the livingroom.
Malik looked up at him. His lavender eyes sparkled behind the deep purplish-red bruises.
“I just don’t understand.....I can’t remember a thing!”
Ryou nodded his head. The last thing he remembered was Yugi asking him to spend the night.
The next thing he knew he and Malik were standing outside of a tavern a few blocks from his
house.
“Neither can I. That’s why we have to talk.”
Ryou sat down next to Malik and looked at him seriously.
“I think.......no...I know the Spirit of the Ring has been coming out through me again as of late. I
think it’s very well possible that your alter is doing the same.”
Malik bit his lip.
“No.....Marik?”
Ryou took a deep breath.
“I’m afraid it’s true. It’s the only thing that would make everything make sense.”
Malik sighed with frustration.
“Just fucking great”
Ryou got up and started pacing around again with his hands behind his back.
Marik looked down at the Millennium Rod and absently shook his head.
“How I got the Millennium Rod back from Yami, I’ll never know.”
Ryou nodded his head.
“Me either.........” Ryou looked down at the Millennium Ring hanging from his neck.
“Malik? Can you stay here? I need to go do something upstairs.”
Malik picked up the rod and looked at Ryou.
“Sure, go ahead.”
Ryou shot up the steps and into the bathroom. He locked the door behind him and glared into the
full length mirror on the door.
“I know you’re in there demon!! Tell me why you’re doing this!”
No response was heard from the spirit.
Ryou’s eyes burned with rage.
“Bakura! We’ve spoken before, so cut the crap. I want answers!”
Suddenly, the Millennium Ring began to glow. Bakura didn’t answer yet, but Ryou knew he was
listening. He could feel it. Severe pains began to shoot through Ryou’s thin body. He sat down
on the cold tile floor and hugged his knees to his chest. He closed his eyes and hung his head.
“Bakura.......please......I can’t take this much longer.”
//I know hikari.// Bakura answered solemnly.
Tears began to well up in Ryou’s eyes. He couldn’t see Bakura, but the presence of his yami was
apparent. Bakura always caused him great pain when he manifested.
“Why Bakura? Why do you do this to me?”
There was a long pause before the spirit answered Ryou. Something about the way he spoke kept
Ryou oge, ge, yet Bakura seemed to want to comfort the boy.
//You’re my hikari Ryou, I am you’re yami. We both have different needs//
Ryou looked into the mirror and glared at the reflection.
“Needs? Who in their right mind has the need to inflict physical pain to ones’ self? What the hell
are you doing when you’re in control? Throwing yourself into oncoming traffic? Strange sadistic
purification rituals? Rolling around on razor blades? Tell me Bakura, please!”
Bakura felt overwhelming anguish coming from his hikari, though Ryou continued to play brave.
It wouldn’t be hard to get to him as long as Bakura kept his cool. He needed Ryou to trust him.
//Ryou, I can’t stay locked in the ring forever...Though I’m not on a quest to collect the
Millennium items anymore, I still have other needs that need to be taken care of. // he replied
hesitantly.
“Fuck you and your needs Bakura! I’m tired of these little games you play! Why me Bakura?
Why?”
Bakura needed to talk to the boy face to face. He needed to look his hikari in the eyes to say
what he had to say. Bakura knew Ryou better than anybody else. He’d broken into the hikari’s
soul room and snooped around many of times, so Ryou’s mind was no secret to Bakura. He
knew he could get to Ryou if he could just gaze into those beautiful chocolate orbs.
Without warning, Bakura summoned up his shadow powers and pulled Ryou into his soul room.
“What the hell? Where am I?” Ryou shrieked when he found his surroundings change. He looked
up and screamed as his innocent eyes met with Bakura’s icy gaze.
“What the fuck did you do! Where am I!” he shrieked as he flung himself backwards, away from
his yami.
Bakura kneeled down in front of Ryou and tipped his chin up with his finger.
Ryou closed his eyes and refused to look at Bakura.
“Ryou-please. You’re in my soul room. I brought you here because I wanted to talk to you face
to face. Please open your eyes.”
Ryou jerked his head away.
“No. You’re too scary.”
Bakura chuckled lightly. He knew he had to put the boy at ease if he was going to get anywhere
with him. Bakura stroked Ryou’s silvery hair to produce a calming effect on the boy.
“Do you realize what you just said hikari?”
Ryou squeezed his eyes together tightly.
“I said you’re scary!”
Bakura ran his long witchy fingers down Ryou’s neck, causing the hikari to shake profusely.
“Ryou, I’m only the darker half of your own soul. Don’t fear me.......you must accept me. You’ll
never feel complete unless you do. We are one, Ryou.”
Ryou slowly opened his eyes and turned reluctantly to Bakura.
“I’m complete without you, please leave me alone.” he hissed.
Bakura took a deep breath and sighed. This kid was one tough cookie.
“Don’t say that Ryou. I need you as much as you need me. Light is never complete without the
darkness.”
Ryou made a sour face at the yami.
“I don’t need you hurting my friends either, Bakura. Malik was the only person who wasn’t
scared to be my friend after all the trouble you caused, and now he’s being hurt too. Are you and
Marik up to something?”
Bakura sat on the floor of his soul room next to Ryou and took Ryou’s hand. He lightly rubbed
his thumb in tiny circles around Ryou’s palm.
“No Ryou.......we’re not up to anything, I can assure you that.”
Ryou wanted to pull his hand away, but something about Bakura’s touch was soothing to him.
“Than why do Malik and I keep waking up in weird places with new cuts and bruises?”
Bakura grinned crookedly.
“Marik’s a rough lover, sometimes we get a little out of control in the heat of the moment.”
Ryou glared at Bakura sharply.
“I don’t appreciate you using my body for your sick sexual prowesses.”
Bakura cupped Ryou’s cheek in his hand and sighed.
“You’re body is my body..just like your friend Malik and his yami.”
Ryou flinched from his yami’s touch.
“And just how did you get the Millennium Rod from Yugi’s yami?”
Bakura grinned as he lightly traced Ryou’s jawline with his finger tip.
“It was easy. The pharaoh is a sloppy house keeper. ”
Ryou shook his head silently. He stared at Bakura in disbelief.
“Why can’t I just get rid of you?”
Bakura leaned forward and ran his lips down Ryou’s soft neck. The hikari shivered from the
sensation.
“Once the Millennium Ring was placed around your neck, we were bonded forever; Our souls
fused together. I am as much a part of you as you are a part of me. If you get rid of me, you’d be
getting rid of yourself.”
Ryou gulped audibly as Bakura left a trail a dark greedy kisses down his neck and collar bone.
“Bakura? What are you doing?”
Bakura brought Ryou’s lips to his and lightly kissed him.
“You are so beautiful, my hikari.” Bakura purred seductively.
Ryou closed his eyes as Bakura undid the buttons of his shirt very slowly. He felt Bakura kiss
his exposed flesh softly. Ryou’s breathing grew faster, and he felt himself giving into Bakura’s
touch.
“Please...lay back Ryou” Bakura whispered into his hikari’s ear.
Ryou obeyed his yami’s request with slight reservation.
Bakura straddled himself over Ryou’s hips and covered Ryou’s body with his own. He cupped
Ryou’s cheek in his hand and sighed.
“Ryou...my hikari.......Why can’t you just listen to me?”
Ryou stared up at his yami wide-eyed.
“Why yami? Why would I want to listen to your twisted ideas?” he whimpered nervously as
Bakura rolled his tongue around his stomach and up his chest. Bakura’s hips rocked soothingly
against Ryou’s.
“Aishiteru, Ryou Bakura.....I know your deepest desires, I know what makes you tick.” Bakura
whispered as he nipped at Ryou’s earlobe.
Ryou tilted his head to the side, silently giving Bakura permission to continue what he was
doing. Though he felt scared, Ryou dismissed his fears. Bakura would never hurt him, he knew
that. Ever since he could remember, the spirit’s voice was in the back of his mind; assuring him
that he would take care of everything.
“Ba.....ku.......ra” he whispered as his darker half sucked greedily at his neck.
Bakura slowly sat up and looked down at his vulnerable hikari. He had Ryou right where he
wanted him.

            Joey sat on the front steps holding a garbage bag containing his only possessions. A long
black limousine pulled up in front of the apartment complex. Neighbors gawked out of their
windows at the unfamiliar sight. Joey stood up as the limo came to a complete stop. The driver
got out and tipped his hat to Joey as he rounded the car to open the back door.
Joey watched as Mokuba emerged from the expensive car.
“Mokuba?”
Mokuba shrugged his shoulders,
“Yeah, duh. Who were you expecting? Jean-Claude Magnum?”Joey snickered as he hoisted his garbage bag of stuff over his shoulder.
“You are definitely a Kaiba.”
The chauffeur took Joey’s bag and showed him into the limo with Mokuba.
The younger Kaiba offered Joey a soda as the door was closed.
“I’ll take a Coke. Where’s your brother?”
Mokuba pitched Joey a Coke and opened his own.
“Seto told me to pick you up. He had to finish some last minute business.”
“Oh, okay, whatever.” Joey nodded as the limo pulled away. He looked out the window and
grinned.
“That’s one place I’m not gonna miss.”
