Drabble 15: Inheritance 2
Jounouchi woke slowly, feeling a large kink in his neck, and grumbled to himself about sleeping on old fancy furniture being a bad idea. He stretched his arms above his head and yawned. His movements woke Seto who also yawned. Jou froze and stared in bewilderment at the cat cuddled next to him.
Seto stared right back and the same odd feeling of something passing over and through him came again. It felt like he was being hugged, but that was it. He held his breath. The siamese glared at him harder and the feeling grew in strength. Jou didn’t breathe and focused on the bright blue eyes of the feline, growing nervous. When the sensation disappeared it left him feeling empty. The cat growled and made a few noises as it stood up.
Jounouchi tensed at the growls and sounds and blinked. Was the cat throwing a hissy fit? He flinched when Seto lifted a paw, claws swiping at the air as the volume increased. Abruptly, it ended. The siamese sat back on its haunches and glared with intense irritation. When the creature remained sitting, tail twitching and swishing in the air, Jou finally started to breathe again.
“I don’t speak meow.” That seemed to annoy the creature even more and with a growl it jumped off the couch. Jou watched as the cat pawed at something before taking off towards the kitchen. He looked back down and saw a leather bound journal. Curious, he picked it up and opened it.
“What’s this?” The lettering was strange, old and faded, but he could make out a few words here and there. “Guide… something, something… care for… Demi something… Guardian of something…” He skipped pages until it the ink wasn’t as faded.
“Translating scriptures is not easy. Based off of what I learned, I’m going to do my best so the next protector will have an easier time.” Jou read aloud. It took him a few seconds to realize that the writing was Kisara’s. He continued.
“I’m changing the wording too. No need for out of date words. I’ll start with the most important knowledge: How to take care of Seto.” The blond blinked and then grinned. Leave it to his cousin to write him an instruction manual. Maybe he could get Seto to get along with him.
“Seto loves attention, but he is very particular about it. Let him come to you. Do things on his terms and he’ll be more tolerant.” Jou snorted. “Seto is a picky eater and has a strict diet of fresh foods. He can’t eat canned or overly processed foods.” Again he snorted.
“Can’t eat or won’t eat? Hmm… I wonder if the tuna is ‘overly processed’ or if his high and mighty ass will eat it.” His stomach growled on cue and he took the book with him to the kitchen. Glancing at the clock he noticed it was already into the late afternoon. While the leftover pizza was nuked in the microwave, he scanned the page.
“Oh, she has a list of recipes too… Shit, his food sounds even better than the frozen dinners I just bought… I might need to go shopping again.” The beep of the microwave and growl of his stomach made him put the book down. He grabbed a cup for something to drink and heard a meow. Seto had leaped on the counter.
“Seto… get off the counter. I don’t want cat hair in my food.”
“Aaaroo… Merrooow.”
“I’ll feed ya in a second, Mr. I-need-homemade-meals-cuz-I’m-special-like-that. The best I can do on such short notice is open a can of tuna for ya.” He turned and grabbed his plate from the microwave and set it on the counter next to Seto. “Move Seto. Off the counter.” He nudged the cat cautiously, not wanting to get swiped at or bit.
“Meeeerrrr.” Seto growled and Jounouchi sighed.
“Look, I know you’re King of the World an’ all, but I ain’t eatin’ with ya sitting next ta my plate gettin’ ya hair all in it.” He watched the feline turn his nose up at him and, after a minute of him glaring at the spoiled cat, it walked away to the other side of the counter, next to the pizza box. Jou rolled his eyes and inhaled his first slice. When he went to bite into his next slice he realized there was anchovies on the pizza. Made sense. His sister always put something weird on her half of a pizza. Last time is was squid and now anchovies. Either way, it was food and he didn’t care.
“Hey! Seto, want some aaaaaanchovies?” He teased and wiggled the small fish at the cat, but when he was still ignored he rolled his eyes. “Suit ya self. Ain’t that bad Mr. Picky.” He finished off his slice and looked back in the box. Three slices left. He set them on his plate when his bladder protested.
“Nature calls… Hey, leave my pizza alone. I’ll be right back.” He warned Seto and walked out of the kitchen and down the hall to the bathroom. When he returned he was shocked at the scene before him.
Seto calmly licked his paw, his eyes seemed to be smirking in triumph at the teen. The three pizza slices were gone. In their place were three crusts, a scattered amount of green bell peppers, and bits of black olives. What was really shocking was how the peppers and olives were arranged. They spelled something out.
“More… Now…” Jou closed his eyes and rubbed them. Was he still asleep? He opened them to see Seto staring at him expectantly. He looked back at his plate and blinked again, denying what he was seeing.
“No way ya did that… You can’t talk an’ Kisara woulda mentioned if ya could write…” He looked around the room and grabbed a knife from the knife block. “Who the fuck is here? If ya know what’s good for ya, get da fuck out an’ neva come back!” Silence greeted him. Seto looked even more irritated.
“Oh don’t gimme that look! We both know you’re just an animal. Cats are weird like that… Hirutani’s in the hall… You, stay here.” He pointed at the cat and sneaked out of the kitchen and down the hall. If he’d waited a moment longer he would have seen Seto “face palm” with his paw. After a quick look around the house and finding nothing out of the ordinary, he returned to the kitchen to see Seto crouched in front of his plate. The veggies had been moved.
“Idiot?” Jounouchi read. “Hey! Fuck you…” He realized he was talking to a cat and smacked a hand to his face. “My life just keeps getting weirder.” He put the knife away and sat in front of his plate and the cat.
“Alright Mr. Smarty pants… no pants… tail… Never mind! Did ya… do that?” He watched Seto nod his head slowly, not breaking eye contact. “So lemme get dis straight… Ya can write messages?” He received another nod. “Is it limited ta vegetables?” He saw the cat dramatically roll its eyes and paw at the plate.
“What? It wasn’t a dumb question!” At the annoyed stare he rolled his eyes. “Was not ya jerk… I’m talking to a cat…” When the phone rang he was happier than necessary to answer it. “Gooooood mornin’… er, afternoon, Jounouchi here!” Seto face pawed again. Why was he currently owned by such an idiot?
“HEY Yugi! Yeah, come ova! I think I hit my head or somethin’... Hungry? Yeah, starved!” He heard a meow from behind him and glance over his shoulder at the cat. A new message stated ‘Me Too’.
“I already said I was givin’ ya canned tuna! Oh, not you Yuug, the cat.” Jou sweatdropped and fumbled around for a reason for his odd behavior. “No, I’m not talkin’ ta the cat… What do ya mean that’s normal? No, I’m not pretendin’ he’s Kisara… Yugi ya make me sound like a nut case…” He looked back at Seto and his eyes widened.
“Shrimp? Ya want shrimp? Well… What? No! I wasn’t calling YOU a shrimp Yuug!” Jou glared at Seto who seemed to be shivering and hiding his face with his paw. “Ya little shit! I otta… Not YOU Yugi! YES! I’ve been talkin’ to da damn cat, okay? Ya happy now? Geesh! Seto wants shrimp. Canned tuna is too good for him.” With a deep intake of breath, he turned around, eyebrow twitching at the new message.
“He wants it fresh and a fish.” He covered the phone with his hand for the first time in the entire conversation. “You’re lucky it ain’t a goldfish… Swordfish my ass. You’re lucky if I get you cod.” For the first time he watched Seto move the veggies around. “Basic grade ya spoiled little shit, not sushi grade.” With that he went back to his phone conversation.
“I’ll pay ya back. I just found this note about his eatin’ habits that she left me. Apparently he’s a picky little bastard… He is so a bastard! He ATE my pizza! Ya… Yuug… Hey… Wouldja stop laughin’ at… Ugh, I’ll see ya in an hour then! BYE.” Jou hung up and glared at his new responsibility. Seto just looked pleased and trotted to the edge of the counter, jumped off, and made sure to snap his tail back and forth.
“We ain’t done yet! Fine, walk away ya… ya prissy little prick!” Jou seethed and then shook his head. He could have sworn the cat stiffened and turned to give him a hard glare before hissing. “Maybe I am a nutcase.” To clear his head, he decided to get himself together for company and ignore the feline as much as possible. After his shower and dressing, he returned to reading the book until the doorbell rang.
“Hey Yugi. No Yami?”
“He got asked to stay late and Grandpa gave me today off to take care of you.” The short duelist giggled and handed him a bag of groceries.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. I gotta screw loose. Follow me.” He lead his friend into the kitchen and pulled out the shrimp and fish. He also pulled out a couple of potatoes, carrots, and butter from the refrigerator.
“So… you have to cook him meals? Good thing you know how to cook. Some of these recipes look complicated.” Yugi commented as he glanced through the book. Jou shrugged and took the book, flipping to the one he planned on making.
“It’s just the timing. Just the difference of medium, rare, and well done.” Yugi nodded and watched the blond work. The taller male cut the vegetables in smaller chunks and tossed them in a pan where the butter was melting. As he tossed them around, waiting before adding the fish, Yugi got up.
“I’ll be right back. Bathroom break. I’ll want to hear more of this special diet.” The tri-color haired teen walked up the hall and opened the closed bathroom door. He froze. Sitting on the toilet was Seto and he looked rather annoyed at being interrupted.
“Uh… sorry?” When the cat yowled and hissed at him he closed the door and bolted back to the kitchen. “J-Jou… Did you know… umm… Seto doesn’t have a litter box?”
“I figured I’d eventually smell it, but I haven’t looked around yet… Why?” Jou put the pan in the oven for a few minutes to look back at his friend.
“Jou… he was using the toilet.” Silence. One blink, then two and Jou erupted in a bout of laughter. Yugi turned bright red as the blond wiped away tears.
“An’ ya said I was a nutcase? Yuug, cats don’t use the…” Jou stopped when he heard the toilet flush. Yugi looked embarrassed and annoyed. He huffed and turned away.
“I hope he didn’t get anything on the seat.” Yugi snapped and stood outside the door. The water turned on and there was a little shuffling before it turned off. The door handle jiggled and opened. Yugi made sure to step aside and let the siamese pass.
“Merow.”
“I said I was sorry!” Yugi snapped and closed the door behind him before smacking himself on the forehead. “Now I’M talking to the cat! But… he… it…” He continued to grumble to himself.
Seto walked into the kitchen at the smell of his soon to be meal. He licked his chops and leaped on the counter. He was surprised to be lifted up and dropped back on the floor.
“Imma keep tellin’ ya ta stay off the counter. No cats on the counter.” Seto jumped back up and was quickly caught and put back down. “Not on the counter!”
“Meerrrr… Arrroo… MER!”
“No, you do not run this house. It’s my house. You’re lucky I’m feedin’ ya like a human an’ not a pissy little bitch like ya are.” That comment earned him a hiss and a swipe in his direction. “Yeah? Well, until ya learn ta speak human, ya stay on da floor like the pet you are.” Jou couldn’t help the smirk that spread across his features as the cat’s fur puffed up in anger. His smirk was short lived when Seto lunged, claws ready, at Jou’s bare feet.
Yugi walked back into the kitchen and blinked in surprise as his best friend ran around the kitchen with a cat on his heels. He stood in the door for a few minutes before speaking. “What did you say or do?”
“Nothin’! He just went psycho! S… OW! Damn it, Seto! That hurt! Just let me finish cookin’!” Jou hopped around, holding his clawed foot.
“Mer.” The smug feline walked out and jumped on the couch to lounge leaving both boys to wonder just what they were dealing with.
“Jounouchi… Seto is no cat. I mean… Okay, maybe a cat can use the toilet, but can it flush the toilet and then wash its paws? If he was a real cat he wouldn’t have much cared that I walked in on him either… Are you sure he’s a normal siamese? Maybe he’s a unique breed or something?”
“Well… I’m not sure. I met Seto when I was like six or seven. Kisara’s mom was still alive. He’s really my aunt’s cat. When she died, Kisara started taking care of him… What?”
Yugi looked at his friend and shook his head. “You were how old?”
“Six or seven.”
“Was he a kitten then?”
“Yuug, Seto’s always been a cat. I never saw him when he was little. Why?” He lifted a brow when Yugi tugged at his own hair.
“Jou, cat's don’t live as long as humans! If he was a year old when you first met him and you’re eighteen now… Jou, he’s an old cat… a really old cat.”
“Well… yeah, but he don’t seem like it. He had no problem clawing me when I was that little either. He’s never liked me. Maybe he’ll get annoyed enough and age quicker.” Yugi smacked his hand to his forehead while Jou took the pan out of the oven and added some spices. He placed the fish in the center and added more butter.
“Jou, cats live like ten to fifteen years max. If he was an adult cat, probably a few years old, when you were a kid then he should be… at least fifteen years old right now. He should have a hard time jumping onto the couch. He looks like he’s just reached adulthood. How long has he been around?” Yugi, having known that things weren’t always what they seemed, was trying to figure out the strange creature in the other room. He and Yami had been through magic related issues before and this was too strange to not fit into that category.
“According to the book she has, he’s probably older… I know that’s weird, but he’s… Well, different. He can write too.” Jou was so busy cooking he wasn’t paying attention to his frustrated friend.
“Jou… you… I… I’ll be right back.” Yugi walked into the other room and stared at the siamese watching him on the couch. “You aren’t a cat, are you?” Seto tilted his head. Yugi waited a few beats, but when he got no answer he began again.
“My soulmate is Egyptian. I know how important cats are and I’ve had my share of magic. I know you can understand me. If you are planning to hurt my friend… I will stop you.”
“Seto! Food’s ready!” Jou called and the cat was gone in a flash. Yugi leaned in the doorway of the kitchen. Seto glared at his plate and looked up at Jou who was quickly devouring his own plate.
“Mer.”
“I made it now eat it.”
“Merr.”
“There is nothing wrong with it.” Jou assured him. Suddenly, Seto leaped on the counter and sat in front of the blond, eyeing his plate. “No. Ya got yer own plate. Go eat it.” Seto raised a paw and reached out to grab a shrimp off Jou’s plate. The blond growled and Seto hissed. Yugi walked in and picked up Seto’s plate. He placed it next to Jou’s.
“Yugi, I don’t want him on da counter!” A brown tail smacked him in the face as Seto gracefully bent to his food, purring in contentment.
“He wanted to eat with you. Take it as him trying to welcome you in his home. It was his home first… Can I call Yami really quick?” Yugi kept an eye on Seto as he grabbed the cordless phone.
“Left your cell at home?” Jou asked and batted Seto’s tail out of his face.
“Sure… I’ll be right back.” The blue eyed glare was not ignored by the shorter teen. He dialed quickly.
“Jounouchi? I’m at work right now. I thought Yugi was going to give you company.” Yami answered on the second ring.
“Yami, it’s me…”
“Yugi? Why aren’t you calling me on your cell? Is something wrong?” The older male set down his pen and listened intently. His lover never called him at work or from a different number unless it was urgent.
“Something weird is going on with Kisara’s cat… I think there’s magic involved. Can you look into it? I don’t think he wants to hurt Jou, but I can’t be sure…” Yugi bit his lip and glanced over his shoulder, feeling like he was being watched.
“Of course, love. Gather what information you can and I will see what I can locate on my end. I guess being a researcher was the best work for me. Just be careful, you and Jou. Handle everything with care.” He warned.
“Yeah, I know, better safe than sorry… I’ll update you as soon as I can. Thanks. Bye.” The short duelist turned around and felt something cold surround him. It didn’t hurt him, but it filled him with a need to get out of there fast. He blinked and the feeling was gone. When he entered the kitchen the angry, cold, blue eyes of the siamese cat glared warningly.
“I might just eat what he eats. Gotta admit, the cat does have good taste.” Jou commented, oblivious to his friend’s nervousness and the cat’s warning.
“Yeah… Sounds good Jou… Hey, Jou… What do you think of Seto?” The glare from the cat grew harder. Yugi could almost swear he saw the eyes glow.
“Otha than the fact that he’s a royal pain and a spoiled shithead?” Seto turned his head and smacked Jou in the face with his tail, hissing.
“What? It’s true! Now keep your tail to ya self.” Jounouchi finished his plate and looked at his shocked friend’s face. “I know, I know. I’m talking to a cat, but he reacts… like he knows what I’m sayin’.”
“Mer,” came a curt response. Jou rolled his eyes.
“He’s not a normal cat.” Yugi continued. “Anything weird happen after we left yesterday?” The blond pushed his empty plate towards Seto. The cat turned it’s nose up at the remaining juice.
“Seto slept with me.”
“How?”
Jou looked at Yugi with a confused expression. “I fell asleep on the couch and he curled up against me and slept with me. Cat’s do that, right?”
“Don’t be afraid of the graveyard.” Kisara’s words appeared in his head.
“Yuug, lemme show ya somethin’.” The blond left the kitchen and guided his friend to Kisara’s room where he closed the door. He was about to open her closet, but Yugi distracted him.
“What’s that?” The shorter duelist pointed to something shining from the light on the dresser. Jounouchi walked over and picked it up.
“It’s Kisara’s earring thing. She never took it off. Said it connected her to her mom and grandma… I thought she woulda left it for Shizuka, but I guess she couldn’t do it before she died… Then she woulda known she was gonna die.” He handed it to Yugi.
“Wow, I can see why she would always wear it. It’s a little dragon with blue sapphires for eyes. Is that a… an ankh in it’s claw?” Jou looked over his friend’s shoulder.
“It’s a what?”
“Egyptian symbol for life. The dragon has it in it’s claw… I wonder what it would look like on.” Jou snatched the ear cuff back.
“Here, I’ll show ya. Maybe I’ll hang onto it as a memento of her. I don’t think Zuka would mind.” Jou turned to the mirror and slipped it on his left ear, just like it had been on Kisara’s ear. It fit perfectly and when the light caught the eyes, they shined brilliantly. There was scratching at the door, but both boys ignore it.
“That looks awesome! It suits you. I’d keep it. I’m sure your sister has plenty of jewelry.” The scratching was louder and more persistent, but they continued to ignore it.
“Yeah, but that’s not what I wanted to show ya.” The door handle jiggling made the blond jump. “What the hell?” The door opened to reveal Seto, paws wrapped around the doorknob, dangling. The cat jumped down and hissed at the boys.
“He opens doors?” Jou asked.
“Yup, he opens doors.” Yugi stated, remembering the bathroom scene. That strange feeling washed over and through the blond again. That strange warm hug.
“He would also like you to get the fuck out of his old guardian’s room!” A snarly voice assaulted Jou’s ears. He jumped again and frantically looked around the room. The hug felt more like a tight squeeze.
“Who said that?”
“Who said what?” Yugi asked, looking worried. “Are you okay?”
“If you don’t get rid of the little troublemaker, I’ll slice him to pieces!” The voice snarled as the warm hug squeezed him painfully again.
“Who da fuck ya think ya are? Get out of my house!” Jou growled back, eyes searching the room as the sensation backed off. Yugi, however, was watching Seto. The cat had one paw outstretched, claws flared out and as it growled it made a few swiping motions. Slowly, the paw relaxed and the cat sat there calmly.
“Get rid of your friend and I’ll explain a few things. No harm will come to anyone… Make him leave.” The hug was lighter this time, almost like a caress over his body. Jounouchi looked around and bit his lip. Why was Yugi not freaking out? The voice was right in his ear and yet there was no one there. Should he listen to the demands or argue? He wasn’t sure, but he didn’t want his friend hurt.
“Hey, Yuug… I’m sorry. I think I’m still a little shaken up from the funeral and takin’ care a da cat. I need ta lay down. Ya mind?” Yugi didn’t take his eyes off of Seto.
“No problem. I’ll just clean up the kitchen for you while you take a nap…”
“No, bud. I’ll be fine. I just wanna have some alone time. You an Yami an the rest of the gang have been hoverin’. I need some air.” He put a hand on the small of Yugi’s back and guided him towards the front door.
“Jou…”
“Trust me, ok? Just go home. I’ll call ya later.” The blond gave him a big smile and waved him off.
“Okay Jou… but if anything happens, and I mean anything, I expect a call. I don’t feel comfortable leaving you alone right now.” Reluctantly, Yugi waved goodbye and headed out. The second he was around the corner, he pulled out his cell phone and called his lover.
“We need to find out about that cat and fast. I’m worried… Yeah, heading over to you now.” Yugi hung up and started to jog. They had to start looking before something happened to his best friend.
Jounouchi closed and locked the door. He looked around, but didn’t see or hear anything. He walked through the living room and down the hall.
“He’s gone… ya can come out now.” There was silence. He walked back into Kisara’s room and stopped dead in his tracks. In the center of the bed there was a man, lounging, in the buff. Deep blue eyes watched him from the doorway as the man ran a hand through his thick sable locks. Jou’s eyes drifted across the stranger; his sharply angled jaw lead to a long strong neck and broad shoulders. His gaze continued lower, taking in the tight chest muscles and six pack abs. When his eyes stopped to stare at the impressive package, a knee was pulled up to block his view.
“You’re staring… What? No compliments?” The deep voice inquired and stretched out, arching his back like a cat before laying on his stomach. “Now that’s just rude.”
“Who… uh… I… Who are ya an… why are ya n-naked?” Jounouchi flushed bright red and clenched his hands into fists. He was trying to ignore the fact there was a sexy naked guy lying on his cousin’s bed. The problem was this stranger shared the same voice as the one threatening his friend just moments ago.
‘Stop thinkin’ wit’ yer dick and start thinkin’ wit’ yer head, Katsuya!’ He thought to himself.
“Me? I’m Seto and I’m always naked.” Seto smiled, showing off his white teeth.
“Seto is a cat an’ you are in no way a cat.”Jou snapped and glanced around, looking for the cat in question.
“If you’re looking for me I’m right here.” Seto stretched again and rolled onto his back. His cock, Jou noticed, had gotten bigger and harder than when he first walked in. Again he shook his head.
“Still no compliments? I’m offended… and here I am trying to thank you after you made me such a delicious meal.” Seto purred, sounding just like a cat.
“L-l-look ya wack job…”
“If you insist, I’ll let you wack me.” The brunet interrupted. He watched the blond swallow, his adam’s apple slowly going up and down with nerves.
“Uh… I don’t know who ya are or if this is some kinda joke, but ya need ta get yer shit an’ get out. I won’t call the cops if ya just leave.” The blue eyes narrowed at him.
“I’m afraid I can’t do that. Why don’t you come make me… Mutt.”
“What didja call me? I’m not a dog!” Jounouchi growled and stepped into the room. The brunet looked unconcerned and sat up with his legs curled around him, showing off his assets. The blond flushed again and swallowed, covering his eyes.
“Wouldja put some clothes on!” Jou felt a soft breeze and removed his hand from his eyes. The brunet was gone. He blinked when he heard the door close and lock. Goosebumps appeared on his arms and he turned around quickly, taking a swing, only to hit air.
“Is this better?” That warm hug returned and the voice was deep as it huskily whispered in his ear. He jerked his head back, but nothing was there.
“Mer.” Jou looked down to see Seto, the cat, sitting in front of him. He took a couple of steps back and looked around.
“Seto… did you see a sexy naked guy run outta here?” He wasn’t sure why the cat glared at him, but he took another step back when the feline got closer. An annoyed cat usually meant he got scratched.
“You’re complimenting me now? Heh, doesn’t matter. As much as I want to play, I need to bring you up to speed quickly.” The voice next to his ear sighed and he sat down on the bed in disbelief. Seto jumped into his lap and meowed. A second later, the cat arched his back and transformed right in front of the blond. Suddenly his lap was full of a completely naked, completely hard, blue eyed stranger. Jounouchi tried to scramble back, but he only wound up leaning away from, what he finally came to realize was, a human Seto.
“S-Seto? You’re a… a…”
“Human? Sort of. I’m more than that, but that’s not overly important right now… Katsuya? Kat…” Seto sighed and rolled his eyes. What a time for the blond to pass out. Seto thought for a second, shifting his weight a little to rub against his new guardian. Female cats in the area were going into heat and it was driving him crazy.
“Hn… When I touched him before…” Seto poked Jou’s clothed side, but nothing happened. He poked a bare arm and a jolt of electricity shocked his system, going straight to his groin. He was even more excited.
“So… skin on skin makes his power react… I am going to have fun with that.” As if to prove his point, he leaned down and kissed the teen’s lips. This time the jolt made both of them moan. Golden eyes snapped open and he stared in shock.
“I’m not going to hurt you.”
“B-but if you’re the cat… ya hate me…” Jou’s mind was working overtime, trying to think of the best way to get out of the situation.
“I never hated you. I… I liked you, but as I told Kisara, you are too young and inexperienced. I do have morals and I am much older than you… Before you go through with your attack, I suggest you hear me out. I’m sure it will help for when you listen to the tape in the altar.” Seto grabbed the blond’s wrists as the boy tried to knock him off. The powerful jolts that went through both of them had Seto gasping. Young or not, if he didn’t get control of himself, he was going to have his way with his new guardian and ruin everything.
“What the hell IS that?” Jou whimpered, his body growing hot.
“I’m not completely sure, but I have an idea. Just stay quiet and listen to me. I’ll release you when I’m finished… talking. Agreed?” He waited for the blond to nod.
“I will skip over the exact dates, they aren’t very important. A long time ago, I had a brother, a twin brother. We were both raised as part of the Dragon’s Keep. It’s a religious sect with a goal to keep the powers of the dragons safe. There were two types of dragons, dark and light, and both were nearing the end of their species. We went through hard tests, things meant to test our worth to the dragons of light as only one vessel could be chosen. I was chosen… Following along so far?”
“So you’re a dragon?”
Seto sighed, “No. I am a keeper of dragon magic… I was human. When I agreed to accept the privilege of being a keeper, I was to give myself over to the dragons. They stored their power, their memories, their souls within me. I became a vessel for all that they stood for. I was supposed to ascend to Godhood. I wasn’t looking forward to that part of it. I loved my home and my family, but it was my fate, my destiny… My brother, wasn’t happy.”
When Seto stared at him, Jou frowned. “So… you keep all this dragon stuff inside you… Magic and knowledge and stuff? So… you’re a god?”
“Close enough… I never ascended. My brother stopped me. What I didn’t know, at the time, was that he had also become a vessel, for the dragons of shadows. They were the enemy of the light dragons. They corrupted him and convinced him to challenge me, but I refused to fight him. He was my brother… would always be my brother. He attacked me, tried to kill me and the power I had within. I was saved… and cursed. One of the females in the sect protected me by changing my form. Seth was blinded by her power and fled. When she tried to change me back, she found that she couldn’t.”
“But you’re human now.” Jou reasoned. The longer the brunet touched him the more he felt the strange and pleasing pulses that flowed through his blood.
“This is temporary. I can’t remain like this for long. When she changed my form, she broke a law. The magic inside me was meant to be moved quickly. She trapped it to save it, and myself, but severed the link to the gods. My brother’s link was also severed for his actions. Neither of us could obtain Godliness. He thought that if he killed me that he would be able to take my power and ascend. The sect has protected me for a very long time, trying to find a way to complete the ritual and finish what was started so long ago. One guardian is bonded with me at a time and the responsibility is only passed to the next of kin with… death… Kisara was my last guardian. Her mother guarded me before her. Now, she has passed me to you.”
“Wait a second… hold the phone… Kisara was part of a secret sect that protected you cuz ya got dragon power in ya an’ ya needa be a God in order ta pass on their power?” Jou gaped at Seto. He knew his cousin was hiding something, but he could have never imagined it was this big!
“Yes, that’s about right. Each guardian has tried to find a way to free me of this curse. Kisara was close, I could feel it! She knew something, but she said she couldn’t explain it to me until she was sure… then she died.” Seto released the teen’s wrists and shifted into his cat form. His breathing heavy.
“I used up too much energy… I need certain things in order to keep my form. I’m surprised I was able to remain for as long as I did.” Seto’s voice whispered into Jou’s ear.
“Are ya ok?” Jou asked, picking up the limp siamese and holding it out in front of him.
“Yes, but can you not dangle me like a stuffed toy? If you’re going to hold me, at least hold me close. I promise not to scratch you.”
“Oh, ok, sorry.” Jounouchi hugged the cat to his chest and stood up. “Now what? I have a human-cat guy with dragon powers, an evil brother, and a curse… My cousin was a protector and died in the line a duty… This is crazy.” His eyes turned toward the closet. He opened the door and stared at the cross. The more he looked he realized it wasn’t a cross, but an ankh. The cassette was in the center of the crossed bars. He wiggled it free with one hand and tossed it on the bed. He fixed the tape back over the hiding spot and took the cassette with him to his room where he shut and locked the door. He set Seto next to it while he looked for his headphones and tape player. Even though he also had a CD player, he’d loved his cassette tapes. Kisara was right to make a cassette, who else would have a player now-a-days?
“My brother is probably dead by now. Long gone while I’m stuck in this form. He was still human and humans do not live forever… I miss my brother… and I miss Kisara… I don’t know what she said on that thing. Will you tell me? She was my friend. I saw her grow up and I hoped I’d never see her die… I’m glad she took me to the shelter. I couldn’t have borne to see it happen.” Seto whispered and watched Jounouchi plug in his headphones and put the tape in the player. At first there was just static. A few beats of nothing until a soft voice came on.
“Testing, testing? I think it’s recording… Hi Kat… I’m sure by now you figured out my message. You might have even met Seto, the real Seto, that is. If you haven’t then sit down. You’ll think I’m crazy, but if you’re listening to this then I’m dead. You gotta believe someone who’s about to die, right?” She sounded happy for some reason.
“I hope I don’t die and that you aren’t listening. It would mean my plan worked and I saved Seto and Seth… Ok, let me start over... Our family originated from an ancient sect who worshiped dragons. There were two types, the light and the dark. Both wanted to be remembered and join the Gods, but the Gods would only allow one breed. There was a war and many died. It came to the dragon’s understanding that they may not survive the war and be lost forever. They decided to find a human to take their place. With that human, they would be reborn in the God’s home and live freely.
“Umm… don’t get bored on me. So… ok, let’s speed this up. So, long story short, there was a set of twins. Both boys met the criteria the light dragon’s needed to hand over their power and stuff. There were tests and at the end, Seto was chosen. Before Seth could come to terms with it, he was swept away by the dragons of shadow and forced to take on their power. It made him cold and heartless. He wanted all the power and to rule the heavens. He tried to kill Seto, but I think it was to save him the pain of leaving his home… I can’t believe it could be any other reason… Seth is a good person… I know he is.” There was silence for a few minutes.
“Sorry, where was I? Ok, so longer story short… I’m not making it short am I?” She chuckled. “Anyway, in order to protect Seto he was turned into a cat and our family line has passed him from mother to daughter up until today. We’ve been trying to find a way to break the transformation, but so far we have not succeeded. I think I found a way though.
“Love and faith connect us to the heavens. If we trust in the Gods, then we are part of them. Since Seto can’t reach them on his own, he needs someone to help connect him. I think that it’s the same for Seth. Only one of them was supposed to ascend… did I mention that already? Anyway… I think I’m the chain to connect Seth to the heavens… Don’t tell Seto, but I love Seth. Seto’s a good friend, but… I don’t deserve him. I got tired of being a protector. I wanted to be protected…
“There’s just something about you, Kat. Seto really liked you, felt connected to you, but pushed you away. He’s never… loved anyone as anything more than a friend. He wanted to cuddle with you when you were little, but was so ashamed he scratched you and ran. He thought he was becoming evil because you were a kid and he thought you were beautiful. Isn’t that silly?
“I hope you get to meet him... There is a special book in the couch with food instructions. He needs human food to get strong, not canned cat food… God was THAT a disaster!” She laughed and Jou felt the tears sliding down his cheeks. A rough tongue licked a tear away and he felt that same strange jolt like when Seto had touched his bare skin.
“I’m going to talk to Seth tonight. The key is love. I know it is. I’ll get Seth to see it too. Please, love him Jou... That’s what you were blessed with. You love deeply... Seto needs that. He needs your magic.” Jou looked at the siamese sitting in his lap. He pet the soft fur and scratched behind an ear. The vibration from Seto’s purr made him smile.
“I hope you didn’t fall asleep for this boring lecture. I would have left this to Shizuka, but she’s far too young. Normally it’s from one woman to another, but I don’t have children. I felt like you would be the right guardian. Even though you’re a guy, you love to protect people. You have never wanted to be protected. You’re a fighter and Seto needs that…
“You know my cuff? The one I always wear? It connects me to Seto so that I can communicate with him... I’m leaving it on my dresser. Please wear it on your left side and never take it off… I’m going to talk to Seth tonight, reason with him. I know he loves me too… but… in case I am dead and you are listening to this and Seto isn’t free… Then don’t trust Seth. He looks just like Seto, but darker with red eyes… I got to go… I love you Jounouchi Katsuya. Always will.” After that there was silence. He waited through it for another ten minutes before deciding that was all there was.
“What did she say?”
“She said… ta take care of ya…” Jounouchi couldn’t tell Seto about Seth. He sounded like he cared about his brother and, according to the recording, Seth wasn’t dead like Seto thought. He didn’t want to hurt him. Maybe there was a reason he didn’t know Seth was alive.
“Anything else? Did she leave a message for me?” Seto pleaded.
“No… she just told me the same story you did an’ since she was the only girl left an’ ya liked me that I had to be da next guardian… She said you felt bad and that’s why you scratched me.” Seto turned his nose up.
“She couldn’t be farther from the truth. You smelled like a dog and since I’m a cat, that makes you my enemy.” His fur bristled when the blond laughed at him.
“Sure Seto… Sure. So, I need ta take care of ya. What does that mean? Do I just feed ya? Protect ya from the neighbor cats?”
“I require attention, food, brushing, cuddles, scratches behind the ears and under my chin. I do not like to play with balls, but I do expect to play board games. I can’t hold cards even though those games seem like they would be fun too… And you need to protect me from people. I can handle other cats, but many people have tried to hurt me, regardless of my form… I want to be human again…” Seto sighed sadly and was surprised when Jounouchi picked him up and nuzzled their faces together.
‘If I were human I’d tackled him and kiss him again. I’d run my fingers through his hair and… No,’ Seto chided himself, he couldn’t allow himself to think such things.
“Cheer up Seto. I may not be as smart as Kisara, but I’m sure we can figure out how to get ya back ta normal. I’ll talk to Yuug and Yams about it too. They are much better at puzzles than I am.” He blinked when Seto tapped his paws against his cheeks.
“You can’t tell anyone else about me. It’s not safe. The midget can’t be trusted. The taller ugly one either.” Seto huffed. Jou just blinked again.
“Seto… Yugi already thinks something’s up with you. He’s not gonna back down either. I trust them… Wait… are you… jealous?”
“Jealous of a midget and his uglier look alike? Hardly! They are not to be trusted is all.” The blond smirked.
“Aw, but I had plans to go play with them at their house in a couple a days. We were gonna play strip poker.” The icy glare almost broke Jou’s innocent expression as he held back a laugh.
“I forbid it. You are my guardian and you are not to have company or leave the house until you figure out how to fix me!”
“That’s easy. The vets do it all the time.” He was surprised at the scratch to his cheek. “Ow! I was joking! Seto… ya little bastard! Fine, be that way!” Jou huffed when the cat wiggled away and ran back to Kisara’s room, kicking the door closed with a slam.
“Can’t even take a joke.” He reached for his cell that had been charging and dialed Yugi’s number.
“Jou, I’ll be right over! What happened?”
“Woa, woa, slow down there Yuug! There’s no fire here. It’s a long drawn out story, but the shortest version is that yous was right. Seto is not a normal cat.”

Author’s note: This one is practically writing itself and this was pretty long! Isn’t kitty Seto an adorable pain in the butt? Should Jou tell Seto about Seth? Can Yugi and Yami figure out what has had the guardians stumped for… ever? Maybe you’ll find out next time!
