Author's Note: Hello everyone! Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback on the last part, I've been scared of pulling that reveal for months now. I always thought the concept of a 'Soul Room' was awesome and very sandbox-friendly from a writing POV, and over the last (Good lord, 15 already?) chapters the Other Joey was pretty much naturally manifesting himself anyway. This chapter isn't nearly as exciting, but it's all ready to go, so as a thanks for sticking around, here it is. Hope you enjoy!
Joey woke up back in his bed, the 2 dragons still resting on his chest, watching over him with their glimmering eyes. He clutched them tightly in one hand, as if they were rosary beads. He squinted over at his old alarm clock. 5am. School didn't even start until 8:30.
He should sleep, he thought.
He was afraid to go to sleep. That..... thing, he kept seeing might return.
(It wasn't me,) he insisted. (I could never be that deranged.)
All the while, he was desperately trying to ignore the fact that he was still hard as a rock. The peephole room.... the Other Him was right. Those WERE all old fantasies of his. Some not-so-old at all. Joey couldn't explain it. No matter how much Kaiba had hurt him and his friends, or how much he drove him crazy, he couldn't shake the image of those blue, blue eyes gazing at him in pure lust.
...Kind of like they did tonight.
("I don't understand what's holding you back, when we're so close to everything we've ever wanted.")
Joey knew it was bullshit. This wasn't what he wanted. He was a mutt from the wrong side of the tracks, stuck as the person he wanted's personal fucktoy. It wasn't like Kaiba cared about him. He wasn't part of the 3 "M"s - Money, Mokuba, and Duel Monsters. He was just a whore, with the added entertainment bonus of being Kaiba's rival.
In his fantasies, Joey never got paid. At least, not the way he did now. A lot of times, they started with Joey finally kicking Kaiba's ass at DM, and the tournament prize being 300 thousand dollars, a full set of Exodia cards, and Seto's mouth around his dick. Other times they were more innocent, almost romantic, with the brunette apologizing for everything he'd done, or Joey rescuing Mokuba from kidnappers and actually getting "thanked" for once.
Then there were the ones where their usual arguments got out of hand and he ended up thrown against the wall of the second floor boys' restroom and fucked until he couldn't see straight.
But he was never a whore.
He might have been poor, and a delinquent, and sometimes it felt like life was playing a joke on him, but he had always held on to that small ember of pride that wouldn't go out, no matter how much dirt was kicked on him.
That's what he'd always believed before he found himself here.
Now, he honestly didn't know WHAT to think of himself. He wondered if it were possible that the whole 'Soul Room' episode had just been a dream, concocted from stress and the stories Yugi had told him.
But that still didn't explain the voices he heard sometimes, or that trancelike feeling he got, as if someone else were taking control of his body, when he slept with Kaiba. Plus, it just FELT too real to be a dream.
As much as Joey loved his friends, he normally tried to handle his problems himself - for starters, at least. But there was no way in hell he could handle this alone. Still, right now, he wasn't sure where to go. Obviously, the resident expert on Soul Rooms and alternate selves would be Yugi, the person he confided in the most anyway. But Yugi knew about as much about sex as Mokuba. ....Possibly less, but Joey SO did not want to test that theory.
At any rate, that department was more Mai's realm. She already knew a bit about what was going on - more than Joey's other friends did at least.... but the whole "there's a nympho twink in my brain that can't stop jerking off" thing was probably beyond her scope.
And there was still one huge, festering problem left.
Dad.
Joey still couldn't believe that he had LAUGHED when he heard his son had been out turning tricks. That he wanted to send him out for more, maybe to get himself a Blu-Ray player to go with the 3D-TV. Joey had talked his way out of it this time, but he knew it wouldn't be long before his father forgot the whole conversation and repeated the request. More than ever, he was stuck on a thought that he had always been holding in, a plan that he kept pushing back in hopes that THIS TIME would be different, if he just held on a little longer.... he had to face the facts.
(I gotta get out of here. At least for a while.)
----
And that was how the teenager found himself at a Denny's halfway between home and school at 5:30 am, inhaling waffles and coffee like he misunderstood the 5-second rule.
He hadn't left a note. A note would imply some kind of plan, some kind of clue as to what the hell was going on. Joey didn't have any of that. He did, however, have a to-do list:
1. Get hell out of Dad's apartment (check!)
2. FOOD (in progress)
3. talk to Yugi
4. talk to Mai
5. Find safe place to sleep
6. Stop being crazy!!!
Number 6 was going to be the hardest, Joey thought. Especially after his 6th cup of coffee. He looked around. He was the youngest person in the place -- hell, the ONLY person in the place, save for a few senior citizens. It was still dark outside, although the sun would be coming up soon.
"Anything else, hun?" the middle-aged waitress asked as she topped him off.
"No thanks," Joey replied, smiling politely. "Say...." he pulled out his beat-up wallet. "if I give you a $50 tip, do you have change?" He asked, pulling out one of the 100s Kaiba had given him.
---
Joey was early. He could only stall so much with free refills and drawing bacon-pictures. Even after stopping at several gas stations along the way for bathroom breaks, he was over 30 minutes ahead of schedule. He almost expected confetti to start flying or some kind of fanfare to play. None of that happened, but the shocked looks of the faculty members he saw in the hallway as he headed to his homeroom were almost satisfying enough.
He slid open the door to find an empty room, save for Kaiba, who was currently ranting on his cell phone in some language Joey couldn't even recognize. It sounded vaguely Asian, but for all Joey knew it was Italian. The tall brunette turned at the sound; his eyebrows raising for a moment when he saw Joey's face, then with a quick "hang on" gesture he went right back to growling into his phone.
Joey shrugged and quietly entered the room, setting his bag down on his desk as he watched Kaiba work. He had no idea what the CEO was saying, but he could imagine whoever was on the other end was probably terrified.
Kaiba sighed as he angrily jabbed the 'end call' button. "The only thing I hate about modern technology," he said, startling Joey a bit, "is that it just can't replicate the satisfaction of slamming down a reciever."
"Hey, you're the genius. You should thinka somethin," the blonde smirked.
He could almost swear there was a small hint of a smile at the corners of Kaiba's lips. "I suppose I could rig something up with the accelerometer," he mused, apparently seriously giving the idea consideration.
"OK, now you're speakin another foreign language," Joey grimaced as he flopped into his seat. "I couldn't understand a lick of that."
"Typical," the millionaire scoffed. "You know... I should probably get you one of these," he thought out loud, looking down at the smartphone in his hand.
"Aw, you don't gotta do that, moneybags."
"It would simply be more convenient," Kaiba bristled. "Don't misunderstand and think I'm going all 'Pretty Woman' on you."
Joey made a noise somewhere between dismissive and amused. "I'm just shocked you've SEEN that movie," he said, propping his chin up with his elbows.
"Cynthia made me," the brunette replied defensively, his eyes narrowing. "Insipid tripe. I made her lick stamps for the rest of the week after that."
Joey laughed, the kind of laugh that Seto usually only heard him use when Seto was at a distance. He used to find it annoying, but for some reason this time it was... not completely unpleasant. "Hey, uh, by the way... were things OK last night?" the blonde asked, his expression suddenly more serious. "With Mokie, I mean."
"Oh. That." Kaiba tensed a bit. "In a manner of speaking, it was."
"'In a manner of speaking'?" Joey tilted his head.
"He... thinks we're dating," Kaiba replied, averting his eyes as he sat down at his desk.
"Seriously?" The brown-eyed boy gave a low whistle.
"I must be training him too well. He figured out you had been there all on his own. He's just too.... well, innocent, to figure out the actual motivations." Kaiba looked back over at him, his blue eyes surprisingly more pleading than forceful. "I couldn't argue. Just talk him into secrecy."
"I understand," Joey nodded. "If Serenity caught me I'd probably do the same."
"How is she doing, anyway?"
The sudden change of subject knocked the blonde off-guard for a moment. "My sis? She's... doing fine. Her vision's still normal, thank God." (I must be hallucinating from all the caffeine. Is KAIBA showing CONCERN?)
Kaiba nodded. "If something happens, and you need money... Just tell me."
Joey stared at the other boy dumbfoundedly, unable to form a coherent response before the door slid open again and Tea and Yugi entered the room.
"Joey?!" Tea ran over to her friend in disbelief. "I've never seen you here so early, did you switch to Daylight Savings Time or something?" she turned in mid-tease to look at what Joey was staring at. "Oh God, you two aren't fighting again, are you?" she groaned, glaring at Kaiba.
"Honestly, Gardner, would it be so hard to mind your own business just until first period'?" the CEO glared back, crossing his arms.
Tea moved to open her mouth, but Joey stopped her with a wave of his hand. "We're ok, Tea. Don't worry bout it."
His friend stared at him in disbelief. "O...k...." Tea replied, glancing back and forth at the 2 rivals warily. "If you say so." Kaiba, seemingly no longer interested in the discussion, turned to face forward and pulled out yet another book.
"So what brings you here so early, Joey?" Yugi asked, helpfully changing the subject.
"Eh, nothin' big. Couldn't sleep," Joey said, rubbing his eyes tiredly.
"Anything up?" his best friend sat down beside him, obviously worried.
"Eh... there's something I kinda gotta talk to you about later. Maybe after school?"
Yugi nodded, freezing for a moment when he accidentally locked eyes with Kaiba over Joey's shoulder. "...Of course."
"What, you can't talk to me?" Tea said teasingly, taking her seat behind Yugi.
"Guy stuff, Tea. You don't wanna know," Joey winked, quickly dropping the serious expression. He didn't want Tea to find out just how MUCH she didn't want to know.
"Come on! I've been eating lunch with you and Tristan for how long now? I can handle it!" she laughed, sticking out her tongue.
"OK, Tea, you win. It's a question about....smegma," the blonde howled with laughter as his friend swatted at him with her notebook, making gagging sounds. "Ow! Quit it! YOU asked! Don't use the side with the rings, it hurts!"
Kaiba paused as he moved to turn another page of "The Prince." Fascinating. Somehow, from across the room, Joey's laughter became annoying all over again.
