P is for Paralyzed
The first thing he did when they landed back in Domino was to go straight to the new Game Shop. Yugi had sent him pictures months ago after they had moved to a bigger building and he was eager to visit with him. It had been a little over a year since he had seen the short duelist. As soon as he entered the establishment, he walked straight up to the front desk and asked to see the owner.“Well, Mr. Motou is away on business, but his partner is here,” the worker told him.The worker led him to the back. As they came around a corner, the worker shouted.“Hey, boss! You have a visitor!”He got the biggest surprise of his life when someone came around the corner in a wheelchair. It wasn’t the sight of the wheelchair, but the familiar face wielding it. The blonde’s face lit up when he saw the visitor.“Hey, kid! When did you get back into town?” Joey asked.Mokuba was stunned, but luckily was still able to answer the blonde.“Seto and I flew in this morning. Our business in the States is done so we’re back for good. Joey, what happened?”Joey smiled at him. He nodded his head to the worker who nodded back before walking back to the front. Joey grasped his wheels and turned himself around like a professional. He asked Mokuba to follow him. Joey led him back into a nice big office.Joey closed the door behind them and flipped a sign around that read Do Not Disturb. Joey offered him a drink which he refused. Mokuba sat down on the couch while Joey wheeled over to sit beside him.“You probably got a million and one questions, don’t ya?” Joey asked.“Joey, what happened? Why didn’t you tell us? Why didn’t you tell Seto?”Joey sighed.“Mokuba, you got to understand something. He left me. He didn’t give me a chance to defend myself and you two left the next morning. And this?” Joey gestured to his wheelchair. “This happened about a week after ya guys left.”Mokuba listened in horror as Joey told his story. Joey had been at the local college registering for classes. He had stopped on a street to greet his sister who had come to meet him for lunch. A drive-by shooter caught Joey in the spine when he turned to protect his sister.“Jo…Joey, what about Serenity?” Mokuba asked, his voice shaking.Joey turned his wheelchair away to go over to his desk. He pulled out a drawer to grab out an envelope. He placed it on his lap before bringing it over to Mokuba.“A stray bullet caught her. She never made it off the operating table. Here, this should answer some questions for you,” Joey said, handing him the envelope.Mokuba nodded quietly. They talked for a little longer, mostly about Joey becoming Yugi’s partner in the business./……/
When Seto arrived home early that evening from the office, he found Mokuba sitting in the kitchen. He was sitting at a barstool pulled up to the kitchen’s island. He had a small glass of whiskey sitting next to him. Splayed out across the island were many documents and a few clippings from newspapers.
“What have you there, Mokuba?” Seto asked.“You were wrong.”Seto frowned. He thought maybe he had heard his brother’s mumbling incorrectly. So he asked him to repeat as he came around to stand opposite Mokuba. The shorter male lifted his head to reveal bright pink eyes. Had his brother been crying?“You…were wrong. And if you hadn’t been wrong, hadn’t blown up…maybe it wouldn’t have happened,” Mokuba said.Seto’s frown deepened. His brother wasn’t making any sense.“What are you going on about?” Seto demanded.Mokuba stood up so fast the barstool crashed to the ground with a loud CRACK.“You were wrong about Joey,” Mokuba told him.Seto rolled his eyes. Mokuba had said this to him several times after first arriving in the States. He had given up after a while.“Mokuba, it was clear what that…mutt did,” Seto reminded him. After graduating college, Seto had gone reluctantly on a date with Joey. Mokuba had taken his laptop hostage; he hadn’t had much of a choice. He found that he enjoyed Joey’s company and they started seeing each other more. They had only been dating for a couple of months when the trip to the States had come around. He had been thinking of asking the blonde to come with them when it happened.A huge project the company had been working on had been leaked to competitors through the newspaper. All the clues had pointed to Joey. The plans had been on Seto’s desk and Joey had come in that day to have lunch with him; Joey was in his office alone for at least half an hour. The newspaper that published the plans was the newspaper Tristan worked at; Joey’s best friend. And the final nail in the coffin had been Joey’s sudden increase in his bank account; obviously a pay-off from the paper.Predictably, when confronted with the facts, Joey had defended his best friend and denied the accusations. Seto remembered the insults he had flung at the blonde and the hurt look he had seen in the other man’s eyes. Joey had flinched back from him before driving his hands into his jacket’s pockets and leaving Seto’s office quietly.“I’m leaving.”Seto’s gaze widened. Mokuba snatched up his glass and took it over to the sink before turning back around to leave the kitchen.“Where are you going?” Seto asked.Mokuba stopped in the doorway and looked over his shoulder. Seto was shocked to see tears streaming steadily down Mokuba’s face.“To a hotel. I don’t know if I can forgive you, big brother. Not after everything Joey’s been through.”Seto was left alone in the kitchen with his brother’s cryptic message. Slowly, he walked around the table to the side where all the papers were facing. His eyes scanned across the papers at a faster than normal rate. What he found was, to say the least, shocking. Some of the papers consisted of reports from a private investigator. The investigator found the leak leading from Seto’s personal disgruntled secretary who had been upset over being passed up for a promotion to go to the States. Emails between her and the newspaper’s editor were found.Other emails were between the secretary and some unidentified person. Newspaper articles talked about a shooting of two siblings; the only survivor, a Joseph Wheeler, lay up in the hospital, holding on by a thread. There was a private document from the District Attorney indicting the secretary and a three-time loser felon as the guilty parties for murder and attempted murder. The last few documents made bile rise up to his throat. Joey had sold a lot of art at a private auction; the large money deposit had been an accumulation of that. Just after he left, Joey’s art had been featured in an art gallery as an up and coming new artist.Seto’s hands tightened into fists. He had been wrong. He had allowed himself to jump to conclusions without investigating further into the matter. He allowed himself to connect the dots and use Joey as the scapegoat. With a yell of frustration, he shoved the papers from the island. They scattered into the air and all over the floor./……/
It had taken a lot of phones calls and great amount of patience to find the condo Joey lived in, but Seto now found himself standing outside it. He didn’t care that it was nearly three in the morning. He had to see the blonde now. He lifted a fist and banged loudly on the door.
Seto waited and waited. He was about to bang on the door again when he heard a light clicking on.“I’m coming. Good God, who could be up at this hour?” he heard Joey mumbling from inside.Yugi had been the one to warn him, but Seto was still very shocked to see the wheelchair when Joey opened the door. Joey wore only a plain pair of black sleep pants and fingerless gloves. To his relief, the blonde didn’t seem surprised to see him.“Do ya realize normal people like ta be sleepin’ at this hour?” Joey asked him.“And do you realize normal people usually invite their guests in?” Seto replied, equally sarcastic.Joey gave him a calculating look before pushing himself back and allowing Seto to enter. Seto eased by him so Joey could close and lock the door behind him. The condo was nice, but Seto’s gaze remained on the blood as he wheeled into the living room area. He turned himself around before locking his wheels and sitting back with his hands in his lap. Joey didn’t offer him a seat, but they both knew Seto wouldn’t sit anyway.“I suppose it’s safe to assume yer brother showed you the packet of papers I gave him,” Joey said.“He did. When did you hire the private investigator?” Seto asked.“Day after you left. Tristan ‘membered seeing some skirt leave the Editor’s office before the article was published. His description reminded me of yer secretary. So I hired a private investigator,” Joey said.“Why was there no report of arrests?” Seto questioned.“The bastard that shot me got life. Yer damn secretary…” Joey turned his head away, glaring at nothing in particular. “Fucking jury called her not guilty. And the stupid DA refuses to refile.”Joey flinched when a heavy hand came down on top of his hands. He tried to tug them away, but he had forgotten how tough a grip the CEO had.“Let go.”“No.”Joey turned his head to level a lethal glare directly at Seto. The CEO was mildly impressed. Apparently, the blonde had taken lessons from him.“You accused me of something I didn’t do. I told ya Tristan wouldn’t do this. He didn’t like that we were datin,’ but he respected muh space. You should have known me long enough to know I may have my idiotic moments, but I’m no cheater or liar,” Joey growled.Seto leaned down so their noses almost touched.“I was angry.”“You were an asshole.”Seto chuckled. “So you’ve told me…many times.”Joey tried pulling on his hands again, but the grip tightened. Seto’s other hand came up to cup the side of his cheek and his chin. Joey attempted to pull away. Seto refused to let him go. Joey closed his eyes as Seto knelt down in front of him so he wasn’t looking down at the blonde.“I know that no amount of apologizing will make up for my mistake. I can’t bring back your sister, but I can promise you’re not the only who’s been in pain. Despite my words, I couldn’t forget about you…puppy.”Joey bit back a whimper as the hand on his cheek slid up to his hair. His head was sensitive to the touch and the brunette knew that. Tears prickled at his eyes from behind his closed lids but he refused to let them fall.“How…” Joey’s voice choked up. “H-How…do I know you aren’t lying?”Reluctantly, Seto drew his hand down from his puppy’s hair. He took both his puppy’s hands into his own and brought them up to the back of his own neck. He looped the blonde’s fingers around the chain resting on the back of his neck. He used that grip to help Joey lift his card locket up from around his neck.Joey frowned in confusion as he felt Seto transfer the locket into his hands. The brunette used his fingers to pry open the locket and face the locket towards him (Joey).“Open your eyes, pup.”Joey ever so slowly opened his eyes to find a surprising sight. The picture in the locket was not that of Seto and Mokuba, but Seto and Joey. The blonde was partially curled over the brunette’s back with his arms wrapped loosely around him and a big playful smile on his face. Seto had a hand on one of Joey’s arms and a small smile on his own face.Joey turned his watery gaze to his former lover.“Ya ever…ever do that to me again, I’m shovin’ yer ass off the roof of yer own buildin’,” Joey growled at him.Seto chuckled as he leaned up to softly kiss his puppy. He pulled back a second later to dip his head in to whisper in Joey’s ear.“I’ll throw myself off the roof before you get a chance,” Seto teased.Joey’s response was to sneak a hand up to the brunette’s head and yank him in for another kiss. Somehow, the two found themselves down the hall and in Joey’s room. Even though it was a little after four, Joey convinced Seto to close the blinds for him. While he did that, Joey sat on his bed with his cell phone up to his ear.“…W-wh…who?” the other voice on the line sounded sleepy and disoriented.Joey chuckled.“Andy, it’s me. I’m sorry to call so early.”“Boss? *yawn* Man, it ain’t even dawn yet.”“I know, Andy. I just needed to call you.”“*gasp* Boss, you okay? Did you have a bad fall again?”Joey felt the bed sink down behind him. He felt it move as the brunette settled behind him with his arms wrapped around his waist. Seto held him back as he peppered his back with light kisses. Joey smiled softly.“Nah. Nah, I’m okay, Andy. I’m just not gonna make it to the office today. I need you to open and close for me.”Joey let out a small, barely audible gasp when Seto bit down on a sensitive part of his shoulder blade. He suckled on the piece of skin, earning himself a full body shiver. He heard the voice on the other line ask Joey something. He felt Joey tremble again, but heard him laugh this time.“No. The cute brunette from yesterday is not making a house call.”Joey nearly giggled when he felt the arms around him tighten and a frown kiss against his shoulder blade.“I got to go, Andy. Got a real bad ache I gotta take care of. I’ll talk to you later.”“Don’t forget to use lube, Boss.” Click.Smart ass, Joey thought. He hung up his phone and leaned forward to place it on the bedside table. His lover pulled him back and further up against his body. Seto moved up to the back of his neck where he did everything. Kiss, lick, nip, suck; Joey knew his neck would look a right mess in the morning. Joey brought a shaky hand up behind him to grasp the back of his lover’s head.“Ah, Set. *groan* D-d-dr-dragon…ooh, feels so good.”Seto agreed. He still knew all his puppy’s weak spots. He wouldn’t do much tonight. All he truly wanted was to keep his puppy in his arms forever. But that didn’t mean he wouldn’t taste his lover first./……/
“Hi, Cynthia.”
The secretary’s head snapped up. She was shocked to see the familiar blonde resting in a wheelchair beside her desk. She pulled back her face into a sneer.“Why are you here, Wheeler?”He smiled in response. Her eyes zeroed in on the bite marks covering the blonde’s neck. She smirked as she leaned back in her chair and put her pen down.“I thought only teenagers did hickeys. Dating an under 18, Wheeler?” she chuckled.Joey grinned as he interlocked his hands and rested them against his stomach.“Yeah, I would normally complain about my neck looking like I was an appetizer for a vampire. But, you see, my lover hasn’t seen me in a while and he can be quite possessive.” Chuckle. “Kind of like a dragon with its cave of gold.”Cynthia glared. She was still tragically single and no attempts at flirting had swayed her boss into even asking her out. He always left at night with that fin head. She didn’t like that this mangy crippled mutt had a lover to go home to. She flicked her hair over her shoulder angrily.“You know the DA won’t refile charges. I was free to walk,” she said, drawing out the word walk.Joey chuckled again. “Oh, it’s not the DA you need to be worried about, sweet cheeks. You see, my private investigator found more than enough evidence to convict your ass. I’ve just been biding my time and saving money to take you to court myself.”Cynthia stood up with a storm, raising her hand behind her in an obvious jester. Yet Joey continued on smiling.“I don’t think you want to do that, honey.”Cynthia glared.“Oh, no. I’m quite sure I do,” she sneered. Her hand stayed paused in the air, however, when she heard a familiar voice coming down the hallway.“No, no, no. I’m telling you that is what happened,” the familiar voice said.Cynthia quickly lowered her hand and straightened herself up. Duke was back early from his lunch. As she straightened her hair and checked her make-up, Cynthia noticed Joey unlock his wheels and turn around to wheel over to the corner. He turned himself around and smiled in the direction Joey was coming from.“Hey-a, Duke. Where’s your sorry ass been?”Cynthia stood there with her jaw dropped to the ground. Even under the employment of Kaiba Corp, with Joey’s legendary “words” with Seto Kaiba, Cynthia had never heard him say such things.Duke came into view with a laughing grin on his face. He and Joey clapped their hands together with cupped hands and Duke reached down to pat him on the back.“Lovely as always to see you, too, Wheeler. Get caught by a horde of mosquitos last night?” Duke chuckled, crossing his arms over his chest.Joey smirked. “You’re just jealous your lover didn’t spend the night last night.”Cynthia had picked up her jaw, only to have it drop again. What gave Wheeler the balls to think he could talk to one of the youngest CEOs like that?! Yet Duke chuckled as did fin head who stepped into view to stand beside Duke.“I assure you it was for good reason,” Duke chuckled.Tristan nudged Duke playfully with an elbow with a big grin on his face. Joey shook his head.“So where’s your lunch date? Thought you were meeting for business,” Joey said, tilting his head to the side.Tristan pointed over his shoulder with his thumb.“Parking the car.”Joey turned his wheelchair to follow Duke as he brushed past him. The two friends followed Duke over to the unfrozen secretary.“Any messages, Cynthia?” Duke asked. She shook her head.“No, none. Should I hold all calls while you’re conducting…business?” Cynthia asked, shooting Joey a pointed look. She was shocked when Duke pulled an envelope out of his pocket and handed it to her. For a moment, she thought maybe it was a raise, but when she opened the envelope, it was the opposite.“A pink slip! I’m being fired?! For what?” Cynthia demanded, slamming the envelope down on the desk.“For the same reason you’re being arrested.”Cynthia’s head snapped so fast to the side she got whiplash. Coming out of the elevator in his customary trench coat was her former boss, Seto Kaiba. Right behind him was a police officer in full uniform.“Arrest?! Why would I be under arrest?” Cynthia asked, screeching loudly when the officer slapped cuffs on her and pulled her arms behind her back.Duke was the one to speak up.“For a hate crime. You targeted Joey because of his economic status and sexual orientation. The hatred turned into pre-meditation and an accomplice in the murder of his sister and serious bodily harm to him,” Duke said.Cynthia let out an unholy screech and tried to lung at the four males. However, the cuffs and officer’s grip held her back. Her eyes burned with a fire as she watched Seto stand next to Joey. He had woven a hand through the blonde’s hair at the back of his head. Joey smiled playfully up at the brunette.“You’ll find that I can be quite…protective of what I perceive as mine,” Seto told her.The other three males snorted. Joey tilted his head back.“Dragon? The word you were searching for is possessive,” Joey said.Cynthia suddenly realized the seriousness of her situation. She had gone after to Wheeler because Kaiba spent so much time with him and started be at the office less. She had known Joey was gay and, shortly before Kaiba left for the States, witnessed Joey kissing the CEO. She had been appalled and had stepped up her plans to get rid of him; her original plan had been to just have someone rough him up.The secretary snarled and cursed as the officer dragged her towards the elevator. When they made it to the elevator and after the office pressed the button, one of them males called her name. She turned around and her eyes got bigger than extra-large pizzas. Duke was sitting on her desk with his legs dangling down. Tristan stood between his legs with his mouth devouring the CEO’s; Duke was giving as good as he got and his hands had disappeared up the inside of Tristan’s shirt.Joey and Seto were a different story. Seto had Joey up out of his chair and his body pressed against the wall. The brunette had Joey’s legs cradled with one arm under them. His mouth was covering the other side of Joey’s neck. He was biting and sucking the skin with the intent to make the sides even. His other hand was out of sight, but judging by the sounds Joey was making, she suspected it was under clothing. As the elevator doors closed, she cursed herself. How could she think she could fool the great Seto Kaiba?
