Archive – Just let me know if you want it.yes"> Conversations ranged from Duel Monsters to homework, but this
day, the conversation was different.
What started out under the topic of Duel Monsters became a heated
disagreement about the treatment of people, by one Kaiba Seto.
“Yeah right Yuge, if Kaiba
ever apologized to anyone it woulda been a grunt and maybe an inclination of
his oh so regal head.” Jou sneered.
“Jounouchi-kun, you’re just
upset because he accidentally knocked your books down this morning.” Yugi Mutou said calmly from his seat.
“You’re damn right I
am. Bastard thinks he owns the school
as well as the world. I can just see it
now, “What’s the matter Inu? Can’t
handle life? Why don’t you have Yugi
fix it for you.”
“No, I'd walk up to him and say, "Hello, I'm
Kaiba Seto, and I'm an idiot. I enjoy saying things I don't mean and regretting
them later. I specialize in pushing people away, and I've had my mind warped
since I was 10. I’ve recently realized I'm an ass who should be kicked through
the city, and I'm masochistic enough that I'd enjoy it if you were doing the
kicking."
The two friends sat in abject silence. This was not the Seto they were used to.
“Kaiba-kun are ya ok? Look if you are really sorry
you don't have to say it like that, just ‘sorry, can we talk?’ OK?”
Yugi finally said, getting up from the table. “Jounouchi-kun, I’ll leave the two of you alone to talk.”
“I was aiming at eloquence, just so I could justify
spending eight years of my life getting rapt across the knuckles with a ruler.
But if you would prefer another way...Can we talk?”
“Sure. No reason to waste eloqu-whatever on
me. What do you want?”
Seto sat down, setting his omni-present briefcase
off to the side. “I'm an ass.”
“Am I supposed to argue?” Was Jounochi’s disgruntled reply.
“It was a statement of fact.”
“Ah. So what do you want to talk about?” The blonde asked as he fiddled with his
lunch tray.
“Us, or the lack there-of.”
“What? Us?
What about us? There is no us!”
“I like you; I want to be with you.” Seto stated simply.
“You like me? What that's supposed
to mean? You want to be with me?! That's low. You spend months teasing me,
calling me a dog, and now you say you want to be with me. I know you can be
brutal but that is totally vicious.” Joey stood up and shook his head. “Maybe
we shouldn't talk.”
The tall CEO looked up at him, his voice almost as
pleadingly as his voice could ever get.
“Please? Please sit and hear me out?”
“Fine.” Jounouchi spat out,
and then flopped back down on the bench.
“I had my reasons for doing what I did, but if I
wasn't sorry, and I wasn't trying to make it right, I wouldn't have said
anything in the first place.”
“I guess.”
“I had a dream when I was three, about a friend I
didn't have.”
“So?
Imaginary friends are normal.”
“I never even had one of those. I kept dreaming
about this friend of mine, it was one of the few things that kept me going
after Mokuba and I went to the orphanage.”
“Wow, must have been a great friend.”
“Sometimes the could be's, are far better than what
is.”
“Is that more of your eloquence?”
Seto blinked in surprise. “A bit, yes.”
Jounouchi just shook his
head.
“Anyway, while my parents didn't think anything of
it when they were alive, Kaiba disapproved of it. He drilled it into my head
daily that love and friendship were inconsequential, and not for me.” The blue-eyed boy said, staring at the
carvings and writings on the table.
“That bastard, love is for everyone. Even for you.
Maybe you need it more.” Jou stated as
he looked at the boy next to him through his shaggy bangs.
“Perhaps. But as to why I drove you away the
most...it's because you look exactly like the boy in my dreams.”
Jounouchi gave himkeptkeptical look. “Uh-huh, right.”
“I'm serious. Down to the last detail.”
“Really, tell me something about him that no one
else would know.”
“He always wanted a Yorkie puppy.”
The blonde looked over stunned. “You could have guessed that, but yeah. We
didn't have room for one and when my parents split up, I went with dad. No
puppy then.”
“I never had a pet.”
“Naw, but you had someone with ya, you had Mokuba.
They even took my sister.”
“That must have been horr.” Just as vital too.
“Yeah but hey, you know what it's like to have a
sib. But your dream friend couldn’t have been me. It’s a coincidence. I had
a dream friend too, but he was a lion.”
“A lion?”
“Yeah, a little cub but he was gonna grow ya
know?” Jou fondly remembered that
childhood friend. The seemingly only
ally in a cold harsh world.
Seto just nodded his head.
“I really loved him. But after a while he didn't
want me anymore.”
“Why? What
make you think that?”
Joey shrugged.
“He didn't say, just one day wouldn't come no matter how I called to
him.”
“Oh.”
“Why are ya so interested?” Jounochi was suspicious of Kaiba on a good
day, but this was beyond suspicious.
Thi>This was downright scary.
“I wonder if we had been dreaming of each other
when were children.”
“Are you crazy?
No, you’re not crazy, you’re cruel.
I just sat here and confided a part of myself to you. Against my better judgment mind you. That little cub was the only friend I had; I
won’t let you do this me. I won’t let
you ruin things.”
“I think we were.”
“Were what?”
The blonde boy demanded as he came out of his rant.
“Fate somehow saw fit to make us dream about
friends we hadn't made yet.” Seto
stated plainly.
“We still haven’t made friends either.” Jou pointed out.
“Can we be? Or have I screwed it up too much?” The brunette was desperate. He’d been alone so long. Been cold and indifferent so long that now
the mirror reflected the cold harsh face he’d been trained to show the world,
and not his true face. The mask of ice
held back the suffering of a boy in need.
Jou looked at Seto for a minute. “We can try but you gotta stop being such a
jackass.”
“I'll make a valiant attempt, though you'll have to
point it out to me when I am. I tend not to notice things like that.”
“So I can just kick ya if you act pompous and
inflated?”
“Yes.”
Jou rubbed his hands together gleefully and
laughed. “Don't worry you'll be... safe with me.”
Seto groaned.
“I knew I shouldn't have agreed.”
His tone turned affectionate as he continued. ‘Inu, just don't leave bruises, or Mokuba will really chain you
up.”
“Oops forgot about him... he's scary.”
“He knows how to get what he wants.”
“Really? So do I.”
A slow smile crossed the blonde’s face.
Kaiba immediately became wary of the look. “Um...”
“Don't worry. You're safe with me. Promise. I never
abandon my... friends.”
“Whatever you say...Koinu.”
“Brat.” Jou
lunged for him. “Keep it up and I’ll
tickle ya.”
“Oh will you?”
One dark brown brow raised in challenge.
“That’s IT!”
Jou pounced and proceeded to tickle Seto. Unfortunately for the tall boy, he was very ticklish, and was
reduced to a squirming ticklish mass in no time flat.
Katsuya leaned back after a few minutes. “Felt good didn't it?”
Kaiba, who was by now beet red and hyper
sensitized, answered breathlessly.
“Hai.”
“Question... if we was dreaming of each other, why
did you look like a lion?”
“Seto can mean lion.” His breathing finally began to regulate after the tickle fest.
Jou sat up quickly. “Guess we were dreaming of each
other. You knew me better than anyone then. Why would ya hurt me? I loved ya.”
“And I loved you, but as I said, Kaiba had his
ideals drilled into my head daily.”
“So you listened to him rather than someone you
loved?” Jounochi was having doubts
about a relationship with Seto, but figured he could use this opportunity to
get inside his head and find out what made the elder Kaiba tick now.
“I had to do what would be best for Mokuba.”
“How could listening to him be better for
Mokuba? You grew cold. He only told us that you’re cold, but that
he loves you anyways. That his Nii-sama
was the best in the world.”
“Would you rather that it be Mokuba acting like
this?”
“Hell no!”
The thought was too scary for words.
Mokuba was just too genki and the image refused to fit. “But it hurt ya kya know? Seeing you getting colder every day. It hurt
me then that you wouldn't talk to me. Maybe I could have helped ya.”
“Perhaps.”
“ But instead ya left me. Since we are going to be
friends you have to promise me something.”
Deceptively strong arms crossed over the blonde’s chest.
“I'll endeavor to keep it.”
“Promise me that you will never hurt me like that
again. Talk to me. If you have a
problem, tell me. Don’t bottle it all
in. I want your word.”
“I promise.”
The young billionaire was sincere, but it would take time. Gozaburo’s teachings were too ingrained now
to just be able to set them aside.
Jou looked at Seto for a moment. “Ya know I don't understand you. You agreed
to everything thing. Either you’re up to something, or your sincere, I don't
know which.
“I'm sincere. I have no motive to be up to
anything.” That rankled the trench coat
wearing teen, he had never lied to people, and wasn’t about to start now.
The master of the Red Eyes shook his head. “What am I gonna do with you Kaiba?”
Hope lifted Seto’s heart just a little. “Love me?”
“WHAT?!”
The s ech echoed across the now empty campus. Lunch had ended, though neither teen took notice.
Seto looked down at the ground, silent. The little hope shattered like crystal on
cement.
Crouching down, Jou took hold of Seto’s shoulders
and looked up at him. “What do ya mean,
love you? We're gonna be friends. Isn't that what you want?”
The brunette shook his head
in the negative.
“Then what do you want? You have to tell me.” Jounochi tried not to sound exasperated, but
it was failing.
“I want you to love me...like I love you.”
“Love you?
What do ya mean?”
Seto took a deep breath and let it out with a
sigh. “I love you Inu, with all my
heart.” This admission would either
make or break him. His secret love
exposed for all to see. If Katsuya
turned him down, he would become completely like Gozaburo has trained him to
be. There would be nothing left other
than his love for Mokuba.
A startled Jou sat back. “You can't.”
“Why not?”
“Cause... it's me. I don't have anything to offer
you. I sure ain't smart. And.. I just ain't worth it!”
“You're selling yourself short.” Came the whispered reply.
“You should be going after someone better.”
“Who are you to tell me what I need, and should
have? Who says I want someone
else? I know what I want.”
“Ya know I always said you were cracked in your
head; you gotta be if you think you want me. You belong with someone
better.” Jounochi insisted.
“There is no one else for me. I've known that since
I was three.” As the refusals kept
coming, Seto walled up the few open sections around his heart.
“What would he have said?”
“Who? Kaiba? I think he'd kill me.”
Jou reached over and hugged him. “But you were his heir, he wouldn't have
done that.”
Kaiba leaned tentatively into Jounochi. “I’m just a replacement. That’s all I’ve ever been. Besides, he'd still have Mokuba
Jou brushed Seto’s hair back. “I wouldn’t leave my little sister to that
either. I’m still not your type though.
“And just who would you think my type would be?”
I don't know. Some quiet little corporate daughter
who would dote on Mokuba and have kids for you.”
“I have enough quiet, I hate it.” Seto began fidgeting.
“So some lady who is as smart as you. Someone you
can talk to and you two can talk about things most of us don't know anything
about.”
“And risk another corporation getting to me through
her, or getting information from her? I think not.”
Katsuya threw his hands up in the air. “Fine so take some pretty blonde bimbo
trophy wife.”
“The only blonde I want is you.”
“And what would your investors say? What about
those you have deals with? They might not want to deal with you because you're
with a guy.” It was probably the most
intelligent thing Jounochi had come up with in the entire conversation.
“My corporation is stable enough that even if
3/4ths of the bigoted investors pulled their support, I would still be fully
operational.”
“Anyone ever tell you that you are a smart ass,
Kaiba?”
“Regularly, I have been called worse than that.”
“Really? By who?”
Jou was starting to get upset.
This whole situation wasn’t sitting right with him.
“Various investors.”
Jounochi was about to see red. Regardless of personally feelings about
Seto, he still deserved to be respected.
Sixteen year olds don’t run multinational billion dollar companies on an
average day. “Why I oughtta”
“Why can't I convince you this is a bad idea?”
Seto sighed in annoyance. “Because only you have problems with it
“I don't have a problem liking guys, Kaiba. I just“I don't want to rush anything. I don't want to
push you intoethiething you'll regret. I want to start as friends, but I was
just telling you up front how I feel.”
Seto explained.
“Yeah but I can't forget this now. You're not
acting at all like the Kaiba I've known.” Jou lowered his head into his hands. “I don't know what to do.”
Sleanleaned back away from him. “Do what you feel is best for you.”
“I don't know what that is.” Jou was confused; he needed to think, and
fast. The way Seto was looking, he was
closing himself off quickly, and probably thinking Jounochi was rejecting
him. This might be the last opportunity
to salvage the situation.
“I'm not demanding an answer right now, or even
today. Think about it.” That statement
was a boldfaced lie and they both knew it.
Katsuya hed hed up and brushed Seto's hair back. “You confuse me.”
“I confuse myself.” It was an honest answer.
“You're not gonna make this easy for me are ya?
Fine...”
“I'll understand...if you don't want anything
beyond...a hello if we pass each other.”
“I loved that little cub, always wondered what sorta
lion he would grow into. I’d like to know that lion again, but you confuse me.
You're so... reasonable now. I don't know this Kaiba. It's like you aren't
really Kaiba.”
“I'm not even truly a Kaiba. It's just a name.” A name Seto despised with all his being.
“Then what do you want me to call ya?”
“Seto.”
“Lion. So I'm your Inu and you're my Seto? hmmm
maybe you’ll just be my Neko.”
“If you wish.”
“If you're this reasonable here then you must be a
pushover at board meetings.” Katsuya
was floored at how Kaiba was just letting things go on.
“I'm anything but a pushover there.”
“Yeah? Right. I can walk ove over ya and you don't
say a word.”
“I chose to allow this because I have been in the
wrong, if however I feel you've stepped too far, you will know it.” Seto had boundaries, anyone who crossed them
would pay dearly.
“Maybe or maybe the kitten lost it's teeth.”
The taller boy pounced on Jou and nipped his
shoulder. “Lost my teeth have I?”
Jounochi laughed and tried to push Seto off him. “MEOW!”
The young CEO kept him pinned down and got nose to
nose with him. “I'll show you I haven’t
lost my bite.” Seto halted the
construction of the walls around his heart and again dared to allow that tiny
spark of hope to take root.
Katsuya licked Seto’s cheek. “Bark.”
Seto smiled and kissed Jou’s nose. “Purr.”
The smile fell from Jou’s's face. “Seto, you could break me so easily.”
Any hint of playfulness dissipated in that
instant. “Break you?”
Jou shook his head. “Never mind. Come on, let's get back before they worry that we've
killed each other.”
“Inu? Tell me.”
“It's not important.” Jou said as he tried to walk past.
Seto grabbed his arm to stop him. “Inu, it's important to me.”
Jounochi ripped his arm from Seto’s grasp. “Why? Why is it important?” He demanded.
“I don't want any secrets between us.”
“I loved that cub.” The hot-tempered blonde shouted. “I always snuggled with him. He loved me. I thought for the
longest time that one day he'd be mine, totally mine. Now you're here. I told
him...how much I love him, you could break me with that. I don't... I love him,
then my mother, my sister. I can't let you break me again.”
Seto’s eyes lowered, his expression looked like he
was just gut punched. “Oh...”
“Come on, they won't believe I haven't hidden your
body if you don't show up.”
“That's alright, I doubt anyone but Yugi would mind
if I didn't come back.” He said picking
up his briefcase.
“Actually I think Yami likes you too but he's just
pissed at your attitude.” Jou>Jounochi
explained as he walked ahead of Kaiba.
Seto followed him dejectedly. He knew now that Jounochi Katsuya wanted
nothing more than a tentative friendship.
He was a fool to give in to hope.
Jou stopped and looked at Seto. “If I go on one date, a couple hours will you
stop looking like I took Mokuba away from you?”
“Yes.”
“Fine.” Jou
walked back over to his friends. A small burning sensation warmed him.
Seto followed Jou nervously.
“Don't worry. I plan on you
spending plenty of money on me.”
Seto was used to being used for his
money, this wasn’t anything new. Though
it hurt a little that that was the only reason Jounochi was going out with
him. “When do you want to go?”
“Tonight, I’ll meet you at your
house. Don’t forget to tell your
gatehouse I’m coming.”
