Disclaimer – Still don’t own them, but me collection of
items keeps getting bigger. *winces at a growl before replying* No, not the
Millennium Items, ‘Kura . . .
chill. Geesh . . . over sensitive Tomb Robber.
Author’s Notes – A little bit disappointed with the lack of
responses from posting the first chapter . . . I guess I took too long getting
this back up and running. *sighs unhappily* Ah well, I’ll continue to post it
anyway, and thanks to those who did review – Deb, Sansi,
Cathrath, and Narae. At
least someone out there still loves me.
Thanks also
go out to Silvershadowfire, who so cheerfully gave me
the name for Yami’s darkness. You rock hun! And tell your yami that if
she wants to give me ideas of what she would like to see done to our dear,
fiendish Kage, just let me know : )
Chapter 2 – Remembrance and Rebirth
They came in one’s and two’s . . .
some as couples, others bringing companions who didn’t understand what was
going on, only that it was important to their loved one.
Marik
watched them approach him slowly, his hands tucked into the pockets of his
black slacks. Tristan looked comfortable with Serenity on his arm, his brown
eyes serious as she looked up at him with worry. Tea’s boyfriend stayed in the
car . . . he felt uncomfortable at these gatherings, and often didn’t come at
all. She wore black and bore a single white rose, her hair tied up in a bun,
fresh from dance school. Joey and Seto came together, as did Bakura and Ryou . . . those two couples had been both the biggest
surprise and the best after everything that had happened. Duke arrived alone,
as always . . . although by the looks of him, he’d left several females behind
him, or one rather rambunctious one.
“Thank you for coming,” Marik murmured as they gathered around him. In response,
Tea hugged him.
“Yugi
wouldn’t come, would he?” she asked. Marik shook his
head, golden earrings swaying gracefully against his neck with the movement.
“No,” he said shortly. Lavender met
cool blue over the crowd and he nodded to Seto before
turning to the railing that overlooked the ocean’s black and ever shifting
abyss. “For Yami,” he murmured, dropping an Egyptian
coin into the roiling waters far below. “We will remember.” His fingers lightly
caressed the dent in the railing where Yami had
smashed the Puzzle against the steel before he backed away, lavender eyes
closing with the memories.
Each of the friend’s,
individually or together, dropped something into the water far below. For some,
it was another wish crane . Joey dropped a Duel
Monsters card . . . Marik was unable to see which
one. Duke dropped a rare black die from his game. Finally, only Seto remained as the others gathered back at the cars,
waiting to drive to the restaurant where they would sit and talk, catching up
on all that had happened.
The tall millionaire stepped
forward, dropping only a single piece of paper over the side before turning to
face Marik.
“How is Yugi?”
he asked without preamble. Marik leaned back against
the railing, his fingers once again finding and caressing the dent the Puzzle
had made.
“He’s been better,” he murmured
after a moment. “I’m hoping that after this year’s anniversary he will continue
to improve.”
“He still mourns Yami,” Seto said firmly, to which
Marik nodded.
“He always will, Kaiba. Yami was the other half of
his soul . . . there is nothing and no one that can replace
that for Yugi. The best he can do . . . is find someone who might help him to forget that empty place.”
The taller brunette nodded before gesturing to the waiting vehicles and their
occupants. He was still uncomfortable with everything that had occurred . . .
then again, getting your nose literally shoved into ancient Egyptian magic when
you refused to believe in it tended to upset lots of people.
“The others are waiting to go to
the restaurant,” Seto murmured after several moments.
Marik nodded, and together they strode towards the
cars, each lost in his own thoughts.

Yugi got
out of the car slowly, looking around in the still night air, the ocean’s
crashing waves the only accompaniment to his sneakers slapping quietly against
the pavement as he approached the railing where his love had last stood in this
world.
He hadn’t wanted to come here . . .
hadn’t wanted to visit this place and remember everything that had happened
here. But somehow, as he drove around the streets tonight, he had ended up
passing this area every time. Finally he’d given in to what his subconscious
was obviously trying to tell him, and had pulled over. Small, pale fingers
reached out, wrapping around the dent in the steel awkwardly before pulling the
body behind them into it, almost as if it was against it’s
will.
He gasped as his stomach came in
contact with the cool metal, a sob catching in his throat as he thought about
what had caused that dent . . . what lay in the water so far below.
“Yami,”
he whispered, staring into the dark, black depths. He almost fancied he saw a
faint glimmer of gold down there. “Why did you do it? Why did you leave me to
this life alone?” The slim form sank to it’s knees,
one hand still wrapped around the steel bar as the other clutched at it’s
chest. “I want you here with me . . . I want to share everything that has
happened with you. I want to have the chance to love you.” He
hiccuped slightly. “All I have is the memory
of what HE did to me . . . I can’t bear to let anyone touch me like that . . .
Ra, how I miss you.” He sighed. “You wouldn’t believe the things that have
happened to us all since you left us,” he murmured finally. “Marik’s probably the best guardian you could ever have
named for me . . . he’s the only one that understands what I’m really going
through. Bakura’s changed . . . maybe not all that
much outwardly sometimes, but him and Ryou are so much closer now. I think what you did really impressed him. Joey and Seto . . .
well, I’m sure you probably saw that coming. You always were so smart about
things like that . . .”
Sobbing slightly, foggy amethyst
eyes stared out over the water . . . before a slight, hazy glow off to the side
caught his attention. He turned his head and froze, his eyes locking on the
ghostly form taking shape there.
“Yami?”
he whispered, his heart suddenly pounding painfully as his mouth went dry. The
specter nodded, sinking to it’s knees not far from
where Yugi sat staring.
*Yugi . .
. aibou . . .*
“Oh Ra . . . Yami,”
he croaked, moving to go to the spirit. Before he could move far, however, the
nearly invisible ghost held up it’s hand in warning.
*No, young one . . . do not come
near. I am not here in truth . . . this
is the best I can do.* He groaned, clutching at his head as pain shot through
him. *Please aibou . . . you must move on. I cannot
bear this any longer . . .*
“Yami? What’s wrong? What’s happening to you?” Yugi asked, inching nearer to the spirit.
*Your pain, Yugi,*
the former pharaoh whispered hoarsely. *I am still with you in part . . . the
pain in your heart tears at me, young one. Please . . . stop this. For me.* His form wavered for a
moment, and Yugi feared he would disappear entirely
before it became clear once again. *I love you, aibou,*
he murmured after a moment. *But you cannot continue to mourn me. Please . . .
find your happiness . . . so that I may rest in peace.* His form wavered again,
and at last dispersed.
“YAMI!” Yugi howled, lunging towards where the spirit had kneeled.
He collapsed there, sobbing uncontrollably. “Yami . .
. don’t you understand that I can’t?” he whispered brokenly. “I love you too.”

Deep
underneath the tower that housed the world’s premier technology and gaming
company, in the armored and protected vaults of Kaiba
Corp., a bright flash of light lit the deepest room in golden warmth. It faded
slowly, but movement within the vault brought the lights into being, and the
piercing shriek of alarms echoed through the open spaces.
The night
guard on duty rushed down to the vaults, puzzled and annoyed.
“Damn mice
must have set off the alarm,” he grumbled, sliding his security key card into
the access panel. Punching in his number, he watched as the door slid open,
admitting him into the vault proper. Sliding through the still opening door, he
deactivated the security mechanism and turned around to begin his investigation
of the vault . . . only to gasp as a pale hand clutched him by the throat,
lifting him off his feet as he gasped for breath around the vise like grip. He
stared down at his attacker, meeting blood-red eyes through the haze of
darkness that was slowly enveloping him with the lack of air. His last thought
was that a man so slight shouldn’t have been able to lift all his weight clear
off the floor.
Kage threw the limp guard aside, dusting his hands off
casually before running pale fingers through tri-colored hair.
“Far too
easy,” he growled, blood red eyes examining his surroundings now that the alarm
had ceased to be an irritation. He shivered slightly . . . it was chill in this
steel mausoleum, and he was unfortunately without clothing at the moment. He
glared at the fallen guard before stalking over and beginning to strip the man
of his clothing.
Moments
later, clad in the guard’s uniform, sleeves and pant legs rolled up over bare
feet, he stood in the middle of the back room, staring down at the pieces of
what had been his prison . . . what was still a prison for one other. He
smirked maliciously, reaching out to finger one loose piece of the golden
puzzle.
“I am free,
Pharaoh . . .” he whispered. “I have accomplished what you cannot . . . and you
cannot stop me trapped in there. This time, our hikari
will be mine . . . and you can do nothing about it.” He chuckled coldly,
turning away from the shattered Millennium Puzzle with a thoughtful air. “So
much to do, and so little time to do it in,” he murmured. “But without you, I
have all the time in the world . . . because none of them will be able to stop
me.”
Laughing,
the being that had once been the Pharaoh’s darkness left the vault, re-emerging
into the real world once again.
Behind him,
in the silence and emptiness of the vault, another flash lit the bare steel
walls. When it had faded, the vault was no longer as empty . . . although it
would be many hours before anyone realized it.
*-------*-------*-------*-------*
Kaiba stalked down the dimly lit corridors of the basement
towards the vault. On the outside, he was as calm and cool as always . . . on
the inside, he was seething. Of all the things he had not wanted to hear when
coming in to work this morning, he had definitely not wanted to hear that the
vault had been broken in to. Especially considering that it had been two years
yesterday since Yami had shattered the item that lay
within it.
Stepping
inside the vault doors, he was annoyed even further to find people standing
around in huddled groups. There were more than enough people here as it was . .
. what was it that was so important that he’d been called down here? He stepped
forward, and watched as his head of security scrambled to meet him.
“Mr. Kaiba . . . I’m sorry to call you down here for such a
minor inconvencience, but . . .” The man shrugged
before continuing. “I thought you might like to see the person we found inside.
He looks disturbingly familiar.” Kaiba eyed him
suspiciously, but followed the man into the back area of the vault.
The figure
lying beside the pedestal upon which the shattered puzzle lay had been covered
with someone’s jacket. Seto froze, seeing the
tri-colored hair that was so familiar to him. ‘How did Yugi
get in here?’ he thought absently, stunned. ‘How did he find out the Puzzle was
here?’ Walking forward slowly, concern for the small duelist faded as he noted
the figure’s approximate height and his coloring. Yugi
was pale . . . whoever it was lying beneath that jacket had a natural golden
tan that Seto had only seen on one other person . . .
Marik Ishtar.
His hand
was shaking as he reached out to pull the jacket away from the figure’s face,
almost afraid of what he would find. He nearly jumped out of his skin when his
hand was grabbed in an iron grip around his wrist, halting it’s
forward momentum abruptly. Sapphire blue met piercing crimson in a single
moment, confusion rampant in both gazes before the crimson closed once again,
their owner succumbing to unconsciousness once more.
Kaiba stared down at the finely boned face, noting the
golden streaks that extended upwards into the unruly spikes of crimson and
black, the kohl that underlined the exotic eyes. Only one person like that came
to mind.
“By all the
gods,” he murmured. “This isn’t possible.” He stood shakily, turning to confirm
that the Millennium Puzzle was still in pieces, and then glanced back down at
the unmoving figure. “Take him to my office, and see that he is comfortable,” Kaiba growled to the nearby guard. “I have a phone call to
make.”
