Danegold: The Viking Brother’s Sequel
Chapter 2: Old Acquaintances
Marik’s Tent:
“Look Malik, I got you some pretty pottery!” Marik said with a happy smile as he held up a pot with some designs painted on it. “I saw this and figured you can put some flowers in it to brighten this place up!” Malik just looked at him with a bored expression. He wanted jewelry, but Marik had that big, stupid, proud look on his face. He thinks he did something good, and Malik can’t be angry at him for trying. Might as well pretend to be excited.
“Thank you, Marik!” He said happily and took the pot. “I love it!”
“You do?! Oh good, I was worried you wouldn’t like it.” Malik shook his head and kissed Marik’s cheek.
“No, I love it! It’s the thought that counts.” ‘God above, this pot is hideous.’ Malik said to himself and placed it next to their blankets. “What kind of food do they have right now, Marik? Anything I like?”
“Deer, game, cow, horse, fish, and some other stuff.”
“I want game.” He slipped Marik’s arm in his. “Take me to eat, love.”
“But don’t you want to rest up first from the trip here?” Malik shook his head.
“I did that already, but now I’m hungry so take me to eat!” Marik chuckled.
“Yes sir!”
Marik took him to the market fair where a large gaggle of servants, warriors, and women all shopped around the stands. One vender close to them was selling fine jewelry, which attracted Malik’s attention. He pulled Marik over to the stand and started looking over the jewelry.
“Darling, what do you think of this one?” He held up a gold trefoil necklace. “Isn’t it beautiful!?” Marik forced a smile, but knew the price was probably outrageous.
“Um, yeah. It’s really pretty.” Malik flashed him large puppy eyes.
“Will you buy it for me? Please?” Shit, Marik knew he was going to ask that!
“Eh, Malik, love, it’s a bit on the expensive side...” Malik pouted.
“Aw, but Marik, look at it! It brings out my eyes and my hair!” He gave Marik a look of pure lust and seduction. “And just wait until you see me in nothing but!” That made Marik shiver.
“By Odin’s bones, Malik, as tempting as that sounds, I know for a fact that I can’t afford it.”
“It comes from Frankia.” Said the vender.
“There, you see?! It comes from Frankia!” Okay, so maybe he never heard of that place, but he needed to convince Marik somehow.
“I’m sorry love, but the answer is no. I don’t have that much money. Seto and Yami are in charge of the finances.”
“Please Marik? Pwease?”
“The answer is ‘no’! Now put it down.” Malik sneered and practically threw it back on the table.
“I don’t ask for much, Marik! I work and I slay all day long for you and you can’t even show your appreciation by buying me a little something!” He pretended to sulk. “I’m just a play thing for you, aren’t I?”
“No, no Malik! I love you very much!! I just want to save what money I have on buying you food and clothes so you can be warm and healthy!” Malik sniffled.
“Don’t you want me to look good in front of all the other Viking warriors?”
“Absolutely not!” Malik was shocked by his answer.
“What? Why not?”
“Half the men here are single, drunk, and brutal! Should you grab their fancy, they’ll come after you! It’s best that you try to look VERY unattractive. And remember, you’re not allowed to walk around unless you have one of us with you! Same goes for the others.” Malik growled.
“I can protect myself, Marik! I don’t need you or some bodyguard following me around! I don’t want to be seen with Keith and Tristan by my side all the time!!” Marik rolled his eyes.
“Why are you so difficult? I gave you my orders and I expect you NOT to disobey them! This is for your own safety, Malik. Do you want me to go reek havoc on all the men here should something happen to you?” Malik sighed.
“No, I guess not.” Marik pat his cheek.
“That’s a good little Malik.” He gave him a quick kiss on the lips. “Please don’t be mad at me, love. I’m only doing this because I care for and worry about you.”
“I’m not mad, Marik. Just disappointed...but I’ll get over it.” Marik smiled.
“Good. Knowing that makes me happy. Come on, I’ll buy you some warm soup.” Marik took his wrist and started to pull him through the crowd. Malik looked back at the gold necklace longingly, when he slammed into something warm and hard. When he turned his head back to the front, he saw it was Marik’s back that he had bumped in to.
“Marik? Why have you stopped?” His face lit up. “Are you going to buy me the necklace?!” When he saw Marik’s shocked expression he frowned. “What’s wrong?”
“Holy sheep shit!” Malik raised an eyebrow.
“That’s a new one I haven’t heard.”
“What’s SHE doing here?!” Malik glared at the word “she”.
“Who’s “she”!? Some mistress of past, Marik!? Do you have five kids with her too?!”
“No, no, no! Tea’s here! Yami’s ex-wife!” Malik gasped.
“Wha-?! His ex-wife? The one who ran out on him and Annar?” Marik nodded and pointed ahead.
“See that girl with the short brown hair and red dress?” Malik nodded. “That’s her.”
“She’s nothing grand.”
“Of course not! That’s the problem with arranged marriages for men! We end up with plain looking women!” He started to usher Malik backwards. “Come on, we have to go tell Yam-” His voice caught in his throat as another figure caught his eye. Malik actually saw the color drain from his face.
“Marik, lover, are you ill?”
“Is that man with her who I THINK it is?!” He looked again and stuck his tongue out as the two exchanged a kiss. “Holy sheep shit, she ran off with an Oddvar!”
“Oddvar? What’s an Oddvar?”
“ ‘What’s’ an Oddvar is a good question, Malik. I’ve been trying to answer that myself. All I know is that they’re one of a kind, I just don’t know WHAT kind!” He gripped Malik’s wrist. “Come on, we have to go!”
“But Marik, I’m hun-“ Marik pulled him along.
“No time for that now! Let’s go!!”
Yami’s tent:
“You sure are eager today, Yami!” Yugi said with a giggle as Yami tackled him to their bed of blankets.
“I just can’t help myself.” Yami purred as he nibbled Yugi’s neck. “You’re just so unbearably cute sometimes! No, not ‘sometimes’, all the time!” Yugi sighed happily.
“Oh Yami, I love you so much!”
“And I lov-“
”YAMI!” Both jumped at Marik’s sudden entrance. “I have news!” Yugi quickly hid his half naked body with a fur blanket, holding it up to his nose. Yami growled low in his throat and stood up, fixing his belt.
“This better be important, Marik! You spoiled a good mood!”
“SHE has returned!” Yami raised an eyebrow.
“ ‘She’ who?”
“She, SHE! That’s ‘she who’!”
“Who’s ‘she’?” Marik stomped his foot.
“SHE!”
“ ‘She’ who?!”
“Gods be damned, Yami! Your fucking ex-wife! That’s ‘she who’!!” Yami stood there, frozen. Yugi dropped his blanket in equal shock. The tent flap opened and Bakura entered.
“What’s all the noise about in here? I can hear you all the way from my tent!”
“Tea is here.” Marik said flatly. Bakura’s eyes widened.
“Seriously? Damn! What a way to ruin a vacation!”
“But that’s not all!” Both Yami and Bakura turned to Marik with horrified looks.
“There’s more?!” Marik nodded.
“And what’s worst, I saw WHO it was she ran off with!”
“WHO!?” Marik took a deep breath.
“Ludmund...Oddvar!” Yami remained still, trying to get his brain to function properly again. Bakura was another matter.
“Excuse me while I go vomit!”
“Why Ludmund, of ALL men!?” Yami nearly shouted.
“My thoughts exactly!”
“I always knew she was a sleazy slut!” Yugi decided to speak.
“Um...excuse me?” All three men turned. “Uh...why is everyone so upset about Tea going with another man? I thought you didn’t care for her, Yami?” Yugi’s eyes started to get moist with tears.
“No Yugi! That’s not it! I’m GLAD that she is away from me! If she hadn’t had run off, I would have gotten rid of her anyway! You have to understand, I didn’t plan on staying so long in England! I thought I would be home before Annar was born! After he was born my plan was to push her off the balcony and make it look like an accident! She had done her job! She gave me an heir so I wouldn’t need her anymore! Easy as pie!” Yugi gasped.
“Oh Yami, that’s HORRIBLE!” Yami gave him a crazed look.
“YOU didn’t have to live with her!”
“What does that matter? You shouldn’t kill somebody so ruthlessly like that! I try to overlook your barbaric Viking ways, but that’s just plain cold hearted, Yami!”
“Believe me,” Yami said with a smirk “It matters.”
“Well, she can’t be that bad?” Bakura let out a laugh
“Oh, yes she can!” He told Yugi. “She’s a flat out bitch!” Marik thought.
“Well, not so much a ‘bitch’, just a very PLAIN bitch. Although she did nag you a lot, Yami.” Yami rolled his eyes.
“You don’t have to tell me, Marik, I know.”
“So, what’s the big deal anyway?” Yugi asked. “She obviously doesn’t want Annar and she doesn’t want to be around you, so I don’t see why you’re all getting upset over this?”
“It’s not really the fact that she’s HERE, it’s who she’s here WITH!” Yugi cocked his head to the side.
“I take it you don’t like this Oddvar person?” The three suddenly seemed to loom over Yugi with their eyes hidden by the shadow of their hair. Yugi’s head shrunk between his shoulders as he looked up at each one in slight fear. Maybe he should hide under the covers....they looked like they were ready to either spit on him or step on him.
“We despise the entire Oddvar family!” Marik said, his voice deep and husky.
“Do you have any idea how much this hurts the Bolverk family pride!?” Yami said. “Not to mention MY pride?!” Bakura looked over at Yami.
“Just wait until THIS gets around!” Bakura said, referring to Tea and Ludmund. “Everyone will know by the end of this trip!” Yami slapped a hand to his face and drug it down.
“By Odin’s blood, I need a drink! Or two. Or three.” He looked down at Yugi. “You stay here for a bit, Yugi. Keith should be back with Annar soon and tell him to stand guard outside the tent.” Yugi nodded.
“O-okay Yami...Please, don’t drink too much?”
“I’ll be fine, Yugi. Don’t worry.” He turned to his brothers. “Alright, lets go.”
Yugi watched them leave the tent before slipping his tunic back on. If he wasn’t worried about Yami before, he was definitely worried now. If the Bolverk’s had some kind of rivalry going on with Oddvar’s, then these games will prove to be more dangerous than he figured they already were. There would be more behind the competitions which will only heighten their chance of getting hurt. Even though Yami has calm down somewhat, he still had a temper. And Bakura’s too hot headed for his own good. Marik on the other hand, just likes to stir up trouble and get into a fight for no reason. Yugi let out a sigh. Things were going to get worse from here on.
“Mommy!” Yugi turned around at the sound of his son’s voice.
“Hi Annar!” Keith put Annar down on the ground and he ran towards Yugi, but ended up falling flat on his face. He may be able to walk, but he was still a little weak in the legs. Yugi gasped and ran over to him, picking him up in his arms. “Are you alright, baby?!” Annar spit out a few blades of grass.
“Me good.” Yugi kissed his forehead.
“Did you get enough to eat?” Annar nodded.
“Uh huh! Unkie Keith let me have wine!”
“Traitor.” Keith said flatly. “And before you start glaring knives and daggers at me, it was only a TINY sip.” Yugi frowned.
“Don’t’ give him wine, Keith.” He said gently. “I don’t want him to turn into a drinker like Yami and the others.”
“He wore me down until I gave him some. He also likes to bite and pinch, so I gave in.”
“Oh no, Annar! What have I told you about biting?” Annar just looked at him blankly. “I see I’m getting through to him...” He let out a sigh. “It’s time for your nap anyway.” Yugi carried him over to his basket bed and placed him down, covering him up.
“Me no wanna nap.”
“Nap right now or no dinner.” Annar quickly shut his eyes and turned on his side. Yugi stroked his cheek adoringly.
“I’ll go stand watch outside, Yugi.”
“Wait, Keith!” Keith turned around. “I want to ask you something.”
“What is it?”
“Well, Yami, Bakura, and Marik were in here not to long ago, talking about Tea being with a Ludmund Oddvar?” Keith’s eye widened.
“Oddvar?! Tea?! Damn, that pairings a shock!”
“That’s what I want to ask you. What is the deal with this Oddvar family? Yami and his brothers looked like they were ready to murder me when I asked about them.”
“The Oddvar’s and Bolverk’s have been a family rivalry for ages. The Oddvar family is not well liked among the other Viking Lord families either.”
“Why do they hate each other?”
“It’s been going on for so long that everyone has forgotten. It’s probably over who has more land, who has more money, who has more heirs, things like that. They’re also our closet neighbors back home.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, they’re north of us. About a day and a half ride.”
“So Yami and the other’s hate them because they were taught to hate them?”
“Well, that goes both ways. They were taught to hate them, but also, this generation of Oddvar’s, the five brothers by the way, brought it among themselves too. They picked on Yami and others since they were kids, and it’s been that way ever since. They’re always throwing insults at each other and fighting. Most of them are all close in age too.”
“Oh, now it makes sense.”
“How do you know about Tea running off with Ludmund?”
“Marik saw them and came to tell Yami. I happened to be here so I heard.”
“This is a blow to our pride.” Keith said with disgust. “Just wait until the other lords hear about this!”
“That’s the same thing Bakura said! Honestly, you Bolverk’s and your wounded pride!” Keith shrugged his shoulders.
“It’s all for the family name. Is that all you needed to ask?”
“Yes, you can go now.”
Keith nodded and exited the tent, taking his post by the flap. Yugi headed back over to his bed of blankets, seeing a small lump poke out through the fur. Yugi looked at Annar’s basket bed and saw it was empty. He rolled his eyes with a smile and shook his head. He may be disobedient, but he was so darn cute! “Alright, move over little guy. I’m coming in!” Annar poked his head out from under the covers and grinned.
“Me sleep wit mommy?” Yugi slid under the covers and cradled Annar close.
“Of course you can.” Annar then yawned and buried his head under Yugi’s chin.
“Nighty mommy.”
“Sleep well, Annar.”
The three brothers sat at one of the free tables to drink their ale. They had only bought one jug and shared it. Marik and Bakura were having a burping contest, which was making Yami’s stomach turn. He wouldn’t even look at them he was so disgusted! It sounded like Marik was winning, though. He was loud enough to cause an avalanche! Also, the other Vikings around them eating and drinking were staring at them. Yami flushed slightly, completely embarrassed by his brother’s childish behavior.
“Knock it off you two!” Yami hollered at them, then he whispered “People are staring at us!” Marik let out another belch and scratched his stomach lazily.
“Big deal, let them stare.” He took another swig of ale.
“You two are making me look bad! Maybe YOU aren’t worried about our reputation, but I am!” Bakura scoffed and crossed his arms.
“Marik’s the loudest of both of us! So it’s his fault!” Marik glared at him.
“It was your idea!”
“Was not!”
“Was too!”
“Was not!”
“Was too!” Bakura smirked.
“Was too!”
“Was not!”
“Was too!
“Was no- DAMN IT!!!” Bakura laughed and celebrated his victory with a large gulp of ale.
“Ah! Revenge is sweet!” He smacked his lips, savoring the lingering taste of the bitter liquid. Marik whined and pulled the jug from Bakura’s grasp.
“Don’t drink it all up, you ale hog!”
“Ale hog?! What the hell-GIVE IT BACK!” Bakura tried to pull the jug back but Marik held on tight. “Give me!”
“No! I want it!”
“I had it first!”
“No, I did!”
“Yami! Marik won’t give me the jug!”
“Yami! Bakura’s being a bitch!!” Yami’s eyebrow twitched in anger, trying to keep himself calm.
“Yami!!” Bakura whined. “Marik’s calling me a bitch!” He in turn bit Marik’s wrist in hopes he’d let go, but Marik held on.
“OW! Yami, he bit me!” He in turn kicked Bakura’s shin.
“OW! Yami, he kicked me!”
‘I am not here.’ Yami thought in his mind. ‘I am on a sunny shore, with the breeze blowing gently through my hair, the sea birds calling softly-‘ His patience was running short....Yugi had told him to do this in times of family peril. Now was the time to try it out.
“Yami! Marik said he’s going to rape me!”
“No I didn’t!” Marik glared.
“Yes you did! DID, DID, DID!” Bakura glared back.
‘The warm sand beneath my feet, the gentle rolling of the waves as they meet the shore, the- oh, fuck this!’ Yami turned to his brothers with murderous rage and snatched the jug from them. “WILL YOU TWO SHUT UP!!” Bakura and Marik looked at him in shock, along with all the others around them. Yami noticed the sudden silence and shrunk back down in his chair. Great, now he just embarrassed himself! He hated them both! HATED them!
“Still acting too young for age I see, Yami.” All three looked up and glared at their source of anger. All five Oddvar brothers stood next to their table, each with a cocky smirk on their face. “I simply loathe men who try to hide their age behind childish behavior.” Said Ludmund.
‘Correction,’ Yami thought. ‘I hate HIM!’
“Why do you fools always end up where we are?” Bakura said in annoyance, trying to cover up the fact that he wanted to rip their throats out. “Do you get a hard on from following us?”
“Heh, you wished!” Sveyn said with a smirk. “I hear you have a personal “male” servant whom you screw whenever you feel like it!” Bakura started to clean under his nails with his dagger.
“An ass, is an ass, is an ass. Gag the taker, blindfold the giver, supply an ass, you wouldn’t know if it belonged to a male or female.” Sveyn sneered at the comeback.
“Is there something you want?” Yami spat out, openly showing his anger.
“Just here to tell you that the first of the games begin tomorrow.” Ludmund told him. “I suggest you sit back and watch this year, Yami. These young warriors who signed up are fresh from the pot!”
“I’m not old!” Yami shouted out. “I’ll will participate in the games like every year and will continue to do so until I am gray!” Mikkel patted his own lower back.
“Just watch that your back doesn’t give out, Yami!” Yami puffed his cheeks out in anger. He practically blew up like a blowfish.
“See you tomorrow at the arena, Bolverks!” The five walked away laughing and talking among themselves.
“Oooo! Those Oddvar’s make me so mad! I just want to CRUSH them!” Marik said through grit teeth as he broke the jug in his hands, its shattered pieces falling to the ground.
“Those lousy, no good, sheep fucking sons of a bitches! Correction, one bitch! I would like to get each and every one of those cock sucking brothers in a noose and hang them from the largest tree in the forest!” He saw his evil pineapple appear and it was bouncing from side to side, swinging a noose like a lasso. It still spoke in its squeaky voice. ~HANG THEM!! HANG THEM ALL!! THEY ARE ALL AGAINST YOU!! KILL!!!! KILL!!!~ His brothers were now a little frightened by Bakura’s sudden wolf-like grin that flashed across his face. He seemed to come out of his trance quickly and once again became slightly serious. “However, I have to agree with Ludmund about your age Yami.” Yami gave him a look that could kill.
“Just whose side are you on, brother?!” Yami asked in fury.
“Well, lets face it Yami, in this culture, you’re no spring chicken.” Yami slammed his fist on the table, startling Marik out of his murderous thoughts. “You know the truth, Yami.”
“That doesn’t mean I have to hear it! And I’m a fine age despite what you think!” Bakura shrugged his shoulders.
“Whatever.”
“Marik, you have my permission and blessing to punch him.” Before Bakura could defend himself, Marik launched his fist and slammed right into Bakura’s arm.
“OW!! SHIT!!”
“I’m leaving!” With that, Yami stomped off through the crowd, heading for his tent. Bakura rubbed his now bruised arm gently.
“You didn’t have to actually DO IT, Marik!” Marik held his hands up in defense.
“He said I could. Take it up with him, although I don’t advise it at the moment.” Bakura nodded, his face twisted in slight pain. Damn, he had forgotten how hard Marik could punch. “I didn’t hurt you too bad, did I?” Bakura sneered.
“No, only made my arm go numb!”
“Hey guys, long time no see!” Both froze at the sound of ANOTHER familiar voice, one they were too familiar with! They turned their heads slowly to see their ex-sister-in-law standing in front of them. “Well, aren’t you even going to say ‘hello’?” They continued to stare.
“Sorry, do I know you?” Bakura asked sarcastically. Tea put her hands on her hips and narrowed her brows.
“You know perfectly well who I am, Bakura!”
“I was being sarcastic you slut.”
“Still cursing like a drunken sailor, I see.” She said with a huff. “And here I am, trying to be nice in greeting you, and you are insulting me!”
“It would have been better if you didn’t greet us in the first place.” Marik said. “I thought that once you had left Yami that we’d never have to see you again.” Bakura looked her up and down suspiously.
“And judging by your attire, I’d say you ran off with somebody quite important.” Tea nodded proudly.
“That I did! Yami didn’t treat me well at all! My new husband gives me fancy clothes, beautiful jewelry, and anything else I desire!” Bakura and Marik exchanged disgusted glances, knowing who her new “husband” was. “He is indeed somebody important.” Marik didn’t like the look she gave them, one of mocking. She knew how much the Bolverks hated the Oddvars and no doubt married Ludmund just to spite the family.
“Well, we’re VERY happy for you.” Bakura said with some disdain and shooed her away with his hand. “Now leave us be.” She scoffed snobbishly at him.
“I was going to ask how Yami is doing, but now I don’t think I’m going to!”
“But you did just ask that.” She narrowed her eyes at Marik and put her nose up.
“Fine! Seeing as you don’t appreciate my company, I shall be leaving you! Good day.” She spun on her heel and stormed away from the two, weaving in and out of the crowd. Marik and Bakura exchanged glances.
“Should we tell Yami?” Bakura asked him.
“Yeah, but I think we should go see Seto first.”
“Why Seto?”
“I don’t like the look she gave us when she bragged about who she was married too. It could have been one of mocking, but then again, it might have hid something.” Bakura raised a brow.
“Like what?”
“I’m not sure, but Seto should be able to tell us. Lets go.”
Seto’s tent:
Seto was busy at work studying the events of this year’s games and the Camp Map. Jou was laying with his head in Seto’s lap, purring as his husband’s free hand stroked his hair. Like the others, they had yet to obtain furniture so they were forced to sit on their fur blankets for everything. Jou snuggled up to Seto’s stomach and wrapped his arms around the firm waist, sighing deeply. He nuzzled the stomach muscles there, smiling when he heard Seto chuckle.
“Stop trying to be a cat, Jou. You’re a puppy.”
“Puppies can nuzzle too.” Jou said with his voice muffled by Seto’s tunic.
“You’re distracting me from my work, pup.” Jou growled and nipped at his stomach.
“Work, work, work! That’s all it is you seem to do now or days!” Seto flicked Jou’s ear with his free hand. “Ow!”
“Work needs to be done, Jou. Whether I like it or not, or how much time I take doing it, it has to be done. Maybe you should try working sometime.” Seto suggested.
“Nah, I’d rather just cuddle with you. That’s MY job.”
“That’s better than nothing, I suppose.” Seto stroked the back of Jou’s ear with his free hand, making him moan low.
“That feels good....”
“Now hush and take a nap, you bad dog.” Seto’s response was a low snore. “Ah, good. Now I can get some work done.” Just as he started looking over the map again, Marik’s voice came flowing through the tent.
“Hey Seto! You in there?!” Seto hissed at the volume of Marik’s voice, hoping he didn’t wake up Jou. Jou was still asleep when he looked down to check.
“Yes, what is it?” Marik and Bakura entered the tent.
“Seto-“ Seto shushed them with a finger to his lips and pointed down at the sleeping Jou. Marik cleared his throat. “We need to discuss something with you.”
“More precisely, we need your brain.” Seto held out his hand.
“I am now charging two silver pieces for my advice.”
“What?!” Both men were appalled by the change.
“When did this start?!” Bakura asked with his hands on his hips.
“Everyone always comes to me, night or day, dumping their problems and ideas. As if I don’t have enough work to do already, I have to solve the problem of others. So I’ve decided to start charging for my services. Now pay up or leave.” Marik felt around in his pockets but came up with nothing. He looked at Bakura and shook his head. Bakura then looked in his pockets, also finding nothing.
“How about an I.O.U.?” Bakura suggested. “It’s important, Seto. It concerns Yami.” Seto sighed and placed his papers down.
“Very well. You owe me two silver coins.” He went back to stroking Jou’s hair. “Now, what is it you have to discuss with me?”
“The bitch is back.” Was all Marik said. Seto’s brows went up in surprise.
“Really? She’s here?” They both nodded. “Alone?”
“No, she’s here with her new husband,” Marik answered “And you’ll NEVER guess who it is!” Seto rolled his eyes.
“Oh gods above, I should have seen this one coming. Let me guess, an Oddvar?” Both nodded. “Which one?”
“Ludmund.” Both answered. Seto shrugged his shoulders.
“Those two are meant for each other. So what’s the real problem?”
“Well,” Marik started. “Bakura and I think that there’s something brewing with the Oddvars.”
“How so?”
“When she told us about him, she flashed us a look that could be mocking, or it could have been something more. It was as if she knew something we didn’t.” Seto nodded.
“A plot, you mean.”
“Yeah.”
“So, you think there’s an evil plot building in the Oddvar family, is that right?” Both nodded. “Hm...” Seto sat in thought for a few minutes. “I need more information if I’m to come up with a possible answer. Can you tell me anything else?” Both shook their heads. “Nothing you heard ‘through the grapevine’?” more head shakes. “Okay, well, this got us no where. All I can say is be sure to tell Yami and keep your ears open. The games start tomorrow and no doubt Tea will be there cheering on her husband and his brothers. Be on the look out for anything suspicious.”
“Right!” Both answered.
“And for the love of Freya, stop answering in tune with each other! It’s driving me crazy!”
“Sorry.” Seto growled.
“Out!” Both men hurried out of the tent, off to find Yami. Seto sighed and looked back down at Jou, who was still asleep.
“Looks like we may have a situation on our hands, Jou.” His only response was another snore.
Yami’s tent:
Duke walked from his tent down to Yugi’s, bringing him some fresh bread he had stolen from one of the stands. Keith was standing next to the tent flap, still on guard until Yami came back. Duke ignored him and moved to enter, but Keith’s large arm stopped him.
“Let me pass.” He narrowed his eyes at him. Even though Keith had been accepted back into the family, that didn’t mean Duke himself had to treat him nicely. He was still an enemy of his.
“What do you need to see Yugi for?” Duke looked down at the loaf of bread in his arm.
“What does it look it, moron? I’m bringing food.”
“He’s sleeping right now.” Duke looked over the thick arm and peeked through the tent slit.
“No, he’s awake. I can see him talking to Annar.”
“Alright, you can go in.” Keith moved his arm away and let Duke pass. As Duke walked into the tent, he swung his head a bit so his ponytail wacked Keith right in the face. Even though he didn’t like Keith, he had to admit the man had become much more tolerant of his antics, and everybody else’s for that matter.
“Hey Yugi.” Yugi sat up in the blankets, holding a groggy Annar who was sucking his thumb lazily.
“Hi Duke! What’s that you have?” He asked, referring to the bread.
“Oh, I snagged this from one of the food stands for everyone. Here, this one is for you.” Yugi took the bread handed to him.
“Why thank you, Duke!” He smiled up at him. “I’m sure Annar will be hung-“ Annar was already gnawing away at the bread in front of him. Yugi giggled and pulled it away from him. He whined pitifully and reach for the bread. “You had enough to eat, son. If you continue to eat like this, you’ll turn into a little piggy!” Annar gave him an angry pout.
“Me hungry more!” Yugi laid it to the side.
“I’m sorry love, but dinnertime will come around soon enough.”
“No! No! Me want!” He tried reaching for the bread again but Yugi held him back.
“Mommy said no.” Annar pouted angrily up at his mother again, forcing tears to well up in his eyes. Then, he let out a loud wail and started to cry. Yugi gasped and picked up the bread again, shoving the already gnawed edge in his mouth. “No, no, don’t cry sweety. Here you go.” Yugi ripped off half the loaf so it was easier for Annar to hold it. The boy smiled behind the bread. “There you go. All smiles!”
Duke didn’t see a smile behind the bread, he saw a grin. Yugi gives into him, but Yami doesn’t. Annar knew which side his bread was buttered on. ‘Manipulative little tyke.’ Duke said to himself. He imagined seeing two little red devil horns sprout from Annar’s temples and an arrow tipped tail swinging behind him. Yup, the kid was going to grow up a spoiled brat at this rate. Annar inhaled his bit of bread and reached for the rest of the loaf.
“No Annar, we need to save this for daddy and me. You can have more at dinnertime.”
“But me want now!” Duke kneeled down next to them and waved a finger in Annar’s face.
“You listen to your mother when he tells you do something!” Annar waited for Duke’s finger to be in range before he lashed out and bit it. “OUCH!” Duke pulled his finger out of the boy’s mouth. “He drew blood!” Yugi gasped.
“Oh Duke, I’m sorry!” Duke just shook his head and wiped it on the inside of his tunic bottom.
“It’s okay, no real harm done.” Yugi glared at his son.
“Annar, no biting!” Annar pouted sadly.
“Me sorry.”
‘You’re not really sorry.’ Duke thought to himself. He could see it in the kid’s eyes. ‘My nickname for him will be Devil Child.’
Outside the tent, Keith still stood on guard. He was watching the people around him do their thing. There was nothing else to do while on guard anyway. As he watched a servant nearby chase an escaped chicken, he didn’t notice the person who came up to him on the other side.
“Oh, hello Keith.” Keith’s head darted around to see Tea. He nearly jumped back.
“T-Tea?!” She smiled.
“Yeah, it’s been a long time, huh?” Keith didn’t know what to say. He hated the girl as much as the others did.
“Apparently not long enough. I was hoping to never see you again.” She rolled her eyes.
“All you Bolverks are the same! That’s one reason why I married an Oddvar. By the way, what happened to your eye?” She asked, pointing to the patch.
“It’s no business of yours. And speaking of business, why are you here?”
“I want to see Yugi.” Keith raised an eyebrow in question.
“How do you know about Yugi?”
“Ludmund told me all about the current love lives of Yami and the others. Heard it through the grapevine.”
“What business do you have with Yugi?”
“I just want to meet him. I also want to see my little boy. I heard he was with Yugi.” She tried to walk in but Keith blocked her with his arm.
“He is not yours anymore and you need Yami’s permission to see the both of them. I can’t let you enter.”
Back inside the tent, Yugi and Duke heard the conversation going on outside. They got up and walked to the tent flap, Yugi holding Annar who managed to snag the bread.
“Keith, who is it?” Yugi asked.
“Nobody important.” Keith replied.
“How rude!” Duke looked at Yugi at the sound of the new voice.
“That’s a girl, Yugi.” Yugi called back out to Keith.
“Who is it really, Keith?” Before Keith could answer, Tea did it for him.
“It’s Tea. I’ve come here to meet you, Yugi.” Yugi exchanged a worried look with Duke. “I know you may not want to talk to me because I’m your husband’s first wife, but I would really like to meet you.” Yugi looked at Duke, giving him a ‘What should I do?’ look.
“It’s up to you.” Duke whispered to him. Yugi nodded and decided to meet this Tea. This was the woman who ran out on her son. Well, Annar was his now, not hers. Maybe she did just want to meet him. It wasn’t in his nature to be rude, and Duke was with him, along with Keith. So he was safe from her should she suddenly go berserk or something. He cleared his throat and called out to Keith.
“Let her in, Keith, and you are welcomed to stay.” Keith led her in by the arm, holding her next to him. He still didn’t trust her. Despite the fact that he was crushing her arm, Tea smiled sweetly at Yugi.
“Hello Yugi, my name is Tea.”
