Title: Our Dark Secrets
Author: Reyn
Disclaimer: I do not own YuGiOh.
If I did, there would be a lot more romance and a lot less dueling.
Author’s Note: I’m not sure I did
Yami’s despair much justice, since I’m not the world’s best writer when it
comes to heavy angst…I’m more into comedy…
I thought this might make an interesting fic,
considering the fact that we don’t know exactly how ‘dark’ the yamis truly are, although we did get a small glimpse at the
pharaoh’s darkness thanks to the Seal of Orichalcos.
I suppose the scariest thought of all would be not knowing
how deep your own darkness runs…
~*~
Summary: I never thought…never realized…I
always believed with him by my side, the darkness that I am would remain at
bay. I never meant to lose control like that…Ra, I never believed myself
capable of hurting him.
Pairing: Yami/Yugi
Warnings: Yamis have
their own bodies.
DARKNESS OVERWHELMED
The sound of the steadily beeping heart monitor did little
to push back the worry that clutched at Yami’s being. How could it, when he was
the reason behind that slower than normal beat?
He never believed such a thing could happen. Never thought
that no matter how bad a situation became, or how overwhelmed by his own
darkness he may have become, that he would have been capable of harming his own
hikari.
And yet there he was; skin paler than normal, marred with
bruises, arm in a cast, three broken ribs, and internal bleeding for which he
had been in 2 hours of surgery for. And it was all because of him.
Yami buried his eyes in the sheets from his position next to
Yugi’s bed, fighting back the tears of self-hate. He had only wanted to protect
his aibou! Protect him! So why…how did things end up like this?
He remembered leaving the Game Shop a little late to go and
meet Yugi on his walk home from school. It had become something of a tradition
between them. Yugi would go somewhere, and on his way back, Yami would always
be there to meet him halfway and walk him the rest of the way home. Yugi would
often joke about it, comparing Yami to a faithful puppy who eagerly awaited his
master’s return. His jokes stopped when Kaiba overheard them one day.
Yami had walked quickly, hoping to at least be able to meet
Yugi towards the end of the block where their meetings always were, but when he
reached the street, Yugi wasn’t there.
It wasn’t until Yami was within a mile of the school did he
begin to grow worried. If Yugi was going to be late or hang out with his
friends, he would have said something.
//Yugi, where are you?// he called
out through their mind link.
/Y-Yami? Please! Help me! They have me trapped in the alley!
Behind Jou’s Bakery!/
His heart froze at the fear laced through Yugi’s words.
Suddenly Yami was off, dashing up the street like a madman, headed towards the
place dubbed ‘Jou’s Bakery’ from the time Jou had gotten into a fight with the head cook on how to
make the perfect cheesecake.
When he made it to the alleyway, Yami paused at the sight
that had presented itself before him. Far in the back, beyond the viewpoint of
traffic and pedestrians, were five thugs, two pinning Yugi to the wall and one
with his hand down the small boy’s pants.
Yugi turned his flushed face towards his soon-to-be savior.
“Yami…”
Yami had snapped. All rational thought left his brain as he
rushed forward, attacking the one who dared touch his aibou in such a manner.
If that was the game these thugs chose to play, then their penalty would be
nothing short of death.
It was as he had his hands wrapped around the leader’s
throat that Yami’s vision had literally flooded with red. After that, he
couldn’t remember anything.
A fresh wave of tears flooded his eyes. Why? Why did he lose
himself like that? How could he go into such a rage that he would attack
anything and everything within the vicinity, including the very one he wanted
to protect?
Yami looked over at his precious Yugi, praying to all his
old gods that he would be alright and wake up soon. He didn’t dare pray for
forgiveness. That was something only Yugi could give, and Yami knew he didn’t
deserve it.
How would Yugi look at him once he opened those beautiful
amethyst eyes? Would they hold anger? Pain? Confusion? Fear?
Suddenly Yami was afraid. He would gladly ask for rejection,
but Yugi would never grant such a thing, for he was far too kind and
compassionate. No, he would insist everything was fine, despite his own fear,
and insist that things go on as before, ignoring his flinching every time Yami
tried to move near.
Yami didn’t think he could take such a punishment; to have
Yugi draw away from him, even if it was involuntarily. To have Yugi look at him
with eyes that no longer shone with complete trust and happiness…
A slight stirring caused Yami to jump as his head snapped to
look at Yugi, who was showing the first signs of waking up in the past two
days. Yami quickly stood, reaching out to caress his hikari’s
cheek, only to quickly draw his hand back. He couldn’t do this.
The door opened, revealing Yugi’s usual group of friends,
and Yami took the opportunity to leave, quickly brushing past them in order to
escape before large innocent eyes had a chance to blink open.
“Yami? Hey, where are you – Yugi!
You’re awake!”
The once proud pharaoh didn’t even glance back as he hurried
down the halls with his head lowered, not stopping until he was standing
outside and breathing in fresh air to help calm the panic attack that was threatening
to overwhelm him. However, the open space and blue skies did nothing to erase
the horrible image of his hikari damaged and connected to numerous tubes and
wires from his mind’s eye.
Yami stared down at his hands and swore he could almost see
the stains of blood still there in the fine lines of his palms, ingrained so
deep that it would never wash out.
How? How could he have done something so horrible to the one
he cared about? The one he lived for? How could he have lost himself so
completely?
/Yami?/
The pharaoh jumped at the tentative voice reaching out for
him through the mind link. He considered ignoring it, pretending he didn’t hear
it and running away instead, but knew it would achieve nothing.
//Yes, aib-…Yugi?//
/Where are you?/Yugi asked groggily, a clear sign that he
still wasn’t fully awake due to the drugs that still resided within his system.
//I am outside.//
/Why aren’t you here?/
//I needed some fresh air.//
/Come back. Please? I want to talk to you./
Yami froze. He really didn’t think he was ready for this.
//But all your friends are there now. Don’t you want a chance to talk with them
first?//
/No. I want you here with me./
Never one to deny his precious light of anything, Yami took
a deep shuddering breath to calm his quaking emotions.
//Very well. I am on my way.//
Bracing himself for whatever judgment his hikari may pass on
him, Yami turned and headed back in, thoughts racing through his head.
What if Yugi didn’t remember what happened either? What if
he asked how his body had become so broken, despite that Yami had shown up
before any real damage had been done? Even worse, what if he did remember and
asked Yami why he had done it?
Yami stopped before the door to Yugi’s room, giving himself
a chance to fully collect his thoughts. Perhaps not remembering what happened
was a blessing. He honestly didn’t know how he would deal with living if he
remembered the sharp cries and pleas to stop issuing from his aibou as he
relentlessly attacked him.
Forcing away the unwanted mental images, Yami pushed opened
the door, wearing what he hoped was a passable excuse for a smile. He
immediately took notice of the fact that the room was devoid of the usual gang,
save for Yugi. Was this good or bad?
“Yami!”
Large eyes shimmering with tears caused the former pharaoh
to lose whatever stoic nerve he had as he rushed forward, scooping up the small
body in his arms in a crushing, yet careful, embrace.
“Oh Yugi, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” Yami choked out, burying
his face in the multi-colored hair.
“It’s okay. It’s not you’re fault,” Yugi reassured, doing
his best to wrap his good arm around his darker half.
Yami sat back, startled. “How can it not
be my fault?! I-…Ra, I can’t even remember!”
“That’s because you were knocked out,” Yugi explained.
“What?”
Yugi smiled. “I’m not surprised you don’t remember. They hit
you in the back of your head with a metal pipe when you attacked their leader.
The first hit just seemed to piss you off even more, but the second hit knocked
you out cold. They would have continued to attack you, but I dove in and
covered your body with my own. That’s kind of how I broke everything…”
Yami stared at his hikari in shock. So…the damage wasn’t
done by him?
A wave of relief and happiness unlike anything he had ever experienced ran through
Yami like a tsunami.
“Are you okay? You don’t have a concussion or anything
do you?” Yugi asked worriedly.
“No…no, Yugi. I’m fine. Despite
having a human body, my shadow powers are still intact and healed me right
away. I only wish I could do the same to you.”
”Are you sure? Because that big grin really looks weird on you,” Yugi stated, leaning
away slightly.
Yami laughed, wrapping his arms around his smaller
look-a-like once more. “I’m positive. I’m simply happy that you’re alright. I
was really scared for a while there.”
“Me too,” Yugi admitted, causing Yami to pull away and look
at him in confusion. “I didn’t think I was going to make it, but something told
me I had to come back.”
“Yugi…”
“I came back for you.”
Yami stared into the large eyes he had come to love. Not
knowing of any better response for such a confession, the darker spirit gently
cupped Yugi’s face and pulled it forward for a kiss that was free of hesitation
and yet full of passion.
Yugi stiffened in shock for a moment, surprised at Yami’s
actions, but quickly relaxed and began to respond in kind as a spark began to
kindle within him unlike anything he had ever experienced before. Soon, a fire
was roaring within his gut, causing Yugi to squirm slightly as he tightened his
grip on Yami’s arm, not quite sure what his body was craving.
Yami pulled back smiling, moving his hands down to Yugi’s
thighs where he began to trace small circles, not completely oblivious to
Yugi’s confusion.
“Y-Yami, I-”
“Yugi I’m sorry,” Yami said, cutting off Yugi as he buried
his face in Yugi’s neck. “Had I been able to properly protect you, you wouldn’t
be in this situation right now.”
Yugi let out a nervous chuckle, all too aware of the warm
hand still on his leg. “You mean getting a glimpse at how you really feel about
me through my first kiss?”
Yami froze as if the realizations of his actions were just
catching up to him. He moved to snatch his hand back when Yugi quickly stopped
him, covering his hand with his own.
“Don’t,” Yugi said softly, drawing in a shuddering breath as
their intertwined hands came to rest further up his thigh than before. “I like
it.”
“Then I suppose this should be a blessing in disguise?” a
teasing voice asked from the doorway.
Identical heads snapped their gaze towards the door, eyes
wide with guilt as they spotted Honda and Jou
watching the scene before them with amusement.
“I hate ta break it to ya guys, but I think sex in da
building is against hospital policy,” Jou added,
causing the two boys to blush.
“Aw, come on now, I’m sure Yugi’s not like that,” Honda
said, pushing Jou aside so he could fully enter the
room. “Although, who knows how wild he can be once his hormones are in full
control.”
Yami decided then that it would be best for his sanity if he
tuned the two friends out for awhile. Glancing back at Yugi, Yami smiled.
//I’m glad you’re okay.//
/And I’m glad you’re here./ Yugi
replied, returning the smile.
As both boys returned their attention to the now quarreling
best friends, a disquieting thought entered Yami’s brain.
Had he not been knocked out, would he still have lost
complete control like he feared? After all, the first hit with the pipe only
served to add fuel to his rage…
Shoving such ideas out of his head, Yami squeezed his aibou’s hand for reassurance. After all, he now had a
future with more positive thoughts to ponder on. Such as how he was going to
take care of the little problem that Yugi was now hiding under the sheets…
~*~
End Note: Well, there you have it. Not my
best, in my opinion, but I doubt I’ll be able to do better at the moment. I
hope you all enjoyed regardless. Throwing in mushy, kiss scenes in a oneshot really isn’t my thing. I
feel like it takes away from the believability that the oneshot
could actually happen or something. Anyways, remember to review if you liked
it! Oh! And if anyone has any oneshot ideas they’d
like to see, let me know and I’ll see what I can do ^_^
