In Search of Treasure
Chapter 2

One Year Later...
Seto Kaiba was frustrated. As he stood in his office at Kaiba Shipping, staring out the window at the busy port that lay before him, he did the only thing he had found effective at calming his mind. He mentally listed all the reasons for his frustration, cursed them all thoroughly and then made a decisive plan of action to deal with each of them.
Reason number one was the letter from the lawyers on his desk, detailing the finalisation of his late father's estate. It was about time too. Gozuboro Kaiba had died ten months earlier. How long did it take to confirm that all of his worldly possessions had been passed down to his oldest son? True, the estate was extensive. Gozuboro had amassed a fortune through shipping and other areas of commerce. But the will had stated Kaiba's inheritance of it all in a single sentence that had been read out to him the day after his father's fall from the window of his office. The same window Kaiba was now staring out of.
His lips twitched into a small smile as the irony occurred to him. Gozuboro had fallen from this window and now here was his son staring out of it, mentally ranting about how long it had taken the lawyers to finalise the estate. Kaiba shook his head as his anger died. There was no point in going over it, really. The lawyers had finally done their job and the company and everything else his father had possessed was now officially his. He would draft a letter to the lawyers that afternoon to confirm that he had received their letter and there would be no commendation in it for either prompt or efficient work.
Kaiba's eyes drifted along the docks until they came to rest on one of the galleons in port. It was one of his galleons. It was also currently reason for frustration number two.
The galleon had limped back to port earlier that morning after being attacked by pirates. The captain, curse his name and send him to Davy Jones' locker to feed the sharks, had proven himself to be highly inefficient at dealing with any sort of problem. Not only had he panicked at the first sight of the pirate ship and become so flustered that he hadn't even given the order to try to outrace them, but he had somehow managed to fall overboard while the pirates had been boarding the vessel.
Kaiba sighed and shook his head. He supposed he should be grateful to the pirates for not only allowing the galleon's crew to interrupt the boarding fight to rescue their captain, but for also helping to haul him back on board. He found himself more inclined to wish that they'd left the incompetent fool in the water though. Although, according to the galleon's first mate, one of the pirates had at least been good enough to knock the captain out when he had started 'wailing like a three year old having a tantrum', as the first mate had put it.
Pinching the bridge of his nose in an attempt to ease the headache he could feel coming on, Kaiba mentally keelhauled the captain. He then did the same to whatever bumbling dolt had approved that idiot as a captain in the first place. He would also have blamed whoever had put the fool in charge of his galleon... except that he distinctly remembered doing that himself.
Kaiba winced and made a mental note to not only check qualifications and references next time, but also put all applicants for captain through a rigorous test to see how they would deal with pirates. He also made a note to fire the captain on the grounds of incompetence and to throw in a charge of 'cowardice in the face of pirates' for good measure. He would have included a charge of 'attempt to jump ship', except that the first mate had assured him that the captain's trip overboard had been a genuine accident rather than a deliberate attempt to flee the pirates. Apparently he'd tripped him in an effort to stop the idiot from running around and getting in everyone's way, but instead of falling to the deck the captain had staggered to the side and fallen overboard. Still, even without that, there was more than enough reason for Kaiba to fire the man. Which would leave him one captain short.
Reason for frustration number three was that he now needed to find another captain. Fortunately, he didn't need to look very far for the answer to that dilemma. The first mate had shown himself to possess both common sense and a practical approach to solving problems. He had kept a calm head despite his captain's idiocy and had even filed a report on the incident. He had composed it during the galleon's return journey to the port and he had spared no detail in it. Kaiba usually detested reading the captains' reports, but he had found that one to be quite interesting and even mildly amusing in places. All that was left for him to do was notify the first mate that he was now the new captain.
Turning away from the window, the teenager strode back to his desk and sat down in his comfortable leather chair. Glancing at the first mate's report, currently sitting open on his desk, Kaiba made a small alteration to his mental note. As well as the notification of captaincy, he would also commend the man on his actions. It took a lot of guts to trip your captain when he was endangering the lives of his men and making a fool of himself in the process.
Kaiba picked up the report and began rereading it from the part detailing the appearance of the pirate vessel and the captain's panic attack. As he read, he picked up a pen and began jotting down little notes to himself in his notebook.
The pirates who had helped haul the captain back onboard the ship had been rhyming identical twins and a pale man with an eyepatch. Kaiba made a note that Para, his brother Dox and Lochlan had been there. The pirate who had knocked out the wailing captain had red hair and a scar. Kaiba sneered as he wrote the name Hishin down. Three pirates had guarded the men, one with long blonde hair and glasses, one with dark hair and an innocent expression, and the third had tousled blonde hair and cold eyes. Kaiba didn't have to look up his records to recognise Wataka, Zetsu and Sotari by their descriptions. It was the same with the rest of the pirates the first mate had mentioned in his report.
By the time Kaiba had finished reading, his headache was no longer threatening him. It was pounding full force into his skull. He groaned and rubbed his temples as he leaned back in his chair. One glance at his notebook confirmed his suspicions. Twenty-three pirates had been on that ship. He had identified every single one of them purely from their descriptions. That fact alone was more than annoying enough to be classed as reason for frustration number four. It also went hand-in-hand with reason for frustration number five.
Over the past year, every vessel sent out by Kaiba Shipping had been attacked by pirates.
As if that wasn't insulting enough, most of the ships had been attacked twice! Once on the way to their destination and then again on their return journey. The strange thing was that nothing was ever stolen. The pirates attacked, fought the crew, searched the ship and then left without a word of explanation or any valuables stolen. Only once had that not been the case.
A few weeks earlier, the attack on one of the galleons had come in the middle of the day and the pirates had ended up stealing a bowl of vegetable soup and some slices of bread, smoked ham and cheese each. At least, the captain claimed they had stolen them. Personally, Kaiba thought the kindly old captain had just talked the pirates into having lunch with the crew instead of the usual sword fight.
Such a thing would normally have been unheard of, but considering how many times that particular captain had come into contact with the pirates, it had not surprised Kaiba all that much. Most of his captains were used to the pirates now, because it was always the same group who attacked the Kaiba Shipping galleons.
Over the year, Kaiba had read enough reports detailing the individual pirates to recognise many of them from even the barest descriptions. Some of the captains and crews of his ships had overheard the pirate's speaking to each other and gradually names had been put with faces. By now, Kaiba knew all of them... except for two.
The two most irritating pests of them all.
The two he knew existed, but none of his captains or crewmembers had ever seen.
Reasons for frustration numbers six and seven.
@-->-->----
Kaiba had first learned of the pirate crew's leader after their fourth attack on a Kaiba Shipping galleon. During the attack, when Hishin had been about to rough up one of the galleon's crew, one of the other pirates had stopped him with the words, "Remember, the captain's not gonna like it if they're hurt."
Hishin's reply had been a scowl and a curse, then he'd shoved the crewmember to the deck and stormed off. But as he pushed him down, the crewmember had heard him mutter, "Golden and his stupid rules."
Since then, the name Golden had been heard a number of times, and confirmation of his status had been made a few months earlier, when one of the pirates had accidentally stabbed a galleon crewman during the boarding sword fight. The galleon's captain had noticed how the pirate hovered while he was checking the wound and asked him why he was so worried. The pirate, Zetsu, had smiled weakly and replied, "We're not supposed to kill anyone. Captain Golden's orders."
Apparently, Golden wasn't a very hands-on captain. He never boarded any of the galleons his crew captured. But from the way the other pirates spoke of him, it was obvious that he had their respect and trust.
Because Golden had never been seen, it meant Kaiba had no idea who he was dealing with. That made him uneasy, but not as uneasy as the fact that every time he saw the word 'Golden' in a report, his heart would skip a beat, only to ache a little when the report went on to talk about the pirate captain. He'd gone over every report half a dozen times or more, but it was always the same. There was never any mention of a teenage pirate with golden hair and laughing brown eyes.
At first he'd been confused. He'd noticed that there was a teenager among the pirates, although everyone he had demanded a description from had said the boy had blonde hair. He had fumed after every one of those discussions, wondering to himself how anyone could label such a glorious colour as merely being 'blonde'. But then one of his more observant captains had added in a new detail. The blonde teen's eyes were green, not brown. Which meant that either the teenager was wearing coloured contacts, or the pirates had two teenage boys among their ranks. After a careful analysis of all the reports that mentioned him, Kaiba had come to the conclusion that the blonde teenager was definitely not the boy he had met during the pirates' first attack. The blonde was usually described as being cool, efficient or rather emotionless. None of those words fit with the passionate, vibrant, golden-haired pirate who had kissed him.
No... not kissed... plundered.
Somehow, reading about all the other pirates' actions but never seeing a mention of the golden-haired boy always left Kaiba feeling a little disappointed. Even a little concerned. Not knowing why the teenager never went aboard the captured ships, or if the boy was still a part of the pirate gang, or even if he was still alive... that was the most frustrating thing of all in Kaiba's life. What made it worse was that there was nothing he could do about it, except read the reports and wait to see if a golden-haired teenager with warm brown eyes was ever mentioned.

As if all that wasn't enough, there was an eighth reason for Kaiba's frustration.
When Gozuboro had died, Kaiba had found a battered, stained and faded leather-bound book among his father's things. Knowing how Gozuboro had always disliked anything that was not in pristine condition, Kaiba had realised immediately how important the book was. He had gone through it carefully that very night and had made a startling discovery.
A famous pirate had written the book. It told of his adventures and of the treasure he had accumulated during the years he had roamed the seas. It also told of his regrets in his later life, after he had retired from piracy. Towards the end of the book, he had written that he had never been able to find the greatest treasure he knew of.
'I spent so much time searching but perhaps I did not search enough. I hope whoever reads this will find the treasure that I never could.'
On the page after that, the last page of the book, there had been a rough drawing of a statue of two dragons, curled around each other. Kaiba had taken one look at the drawing and it was as if someone had just handed him the final piece of a puzzle. Everything clicked into place and he immediately knew the reason why his father had sent him to retrieve the fake statue from the museum and why he had been so enraged over its theft by the pirates.
The drawing wasn't of a statue of two dragons at all. It was of two dragon statues, made so they locked together. One of the statues was the ivory dragon with the sapphire eyes that had been a prized part of Gozuboro Kaiba's collection.
The same statue that the pirates had stolen the copy of, during their first attack.
@-->-->----
After finding the book, Kaiba had searched for that second dragon. He had found its trail a few times since then, only to soon lose it again. He had almost given up hope of ever finding it. But then, early that morning, he had received a clue to its current whereabouts. According to the information his people had gathered for him, an auction of rare and valuable art objects was to take place on a privately owned island in a few days' time.
One of the items up for auction was an ivory dragon statue with sapphire eyes.
Of course, the chances were high that the pirates would attack his ship if he sailed to the island. There was even the chance that they knew of the statue's whereabouts and were counting on him going after it. In all probability, they would be waiting to steal it off him on his return journey.
A small smile played over Kaiba's lips as he thought over the possibilities. He knew one thing for certain. If the statue on the island were indeed the one he was looking for, then not even a golden-haired pirate would steal it from him.
Even if that pirate had managed to steal into his dreams every night for the past year.
