Honestly, people... what's wrong with you? >.> Exactly half of the people who reviewed Distractions wanted one with Seth as seme... soI wrote it, in Stress. That has no reviews! Then this gets one review - and I thought that was a hot lemon. *pout* I'm going to want to stop writing...
SCX: Sure, I'll try and write your story... but it'll be hard. I don't know if I can write anything long and serious that doesn't focus in some way on either Seto or Seth... Do you want me to add one of them, or try my hand at something new?
~~~~~*~~~~~
“Seth…”
He looked
up. They’d been nice enough to give him a skirt, at least, and he was focusing
on not shivering in the cold darkness of the cell in which he was being kept. A
few blinks showed him the singular silhouette of his pharaoh.
“Seth,
why?” he asked. “Why did you do it?”
He
didn’t answer. His answer wouldn’t have been appreciated anyway. Sarcasm, in
this situation, could really only make things worse, and he didn’t have a real
answer. He had asked himself that same question, and he hadn’t even been able to
satisfy himself… how could he possibly satisfy anyone else?
Atemu
sighed, misinterpreting his silence as stubbornness. Finally, he looked up
again.
“Your
lover escaped.”
He
nodded. “I imagined he would.”
“He
didn’t make any effort to save you.”
“I knew
he wouldn’t. He has no reason to risk his life for me; it was only an
arrangement of convenience. We didn’t mean anything to each other but sex.”
“So it
wasn’t only this once…?”
“Dozens
of times. Maybe hundreds.”
There
was another sigh. “Why?” he asked again; it seemed to be a sticking point with
him. “Why did you do this? You’ve condemned yourself to death, your soul to
damnation… for what? Some thief who doesn’t care about you at all? Why did you
even enter into such an arrangement?”
At
least that was a question he could answer. He knew perfectly well how it
started. “He broke into the palace to rob it, and found me instead. I
distracted him from robbing the place, and in return he damned my soul in the
best possible way. It wasn’t a hard arrangement to enter into, once started. No
one else could possibly give me what I wanted.” He stood there stiffly, almost
proudly. He refused to be ashamed of his actions: he wouldn’t have changed
anything.
Atemu’s
voice became sad. “You would do it again, wouldn’t you?”
“Yes.”
“I wish
you could tell me it was because you loved him, at least…”
Love?
Seth actually snorted. He’d never experienced such a thing. “I didn’t.”
The
pharaoh shook his head. “You’re going to die soon, because of what you’ve done,
and it won’t even have been for love… I pity you, Seth.”
“Then
don’t kill me.” Simple as that really… he knew it wasn’t going to happen, but
he really only wanted to prove how false his pity really was.
“You
know I can’t do that. It’s the law – the will of the gods.”
Seth
snorted again. Yeah, right. The gods. The will of several bitter, repressed old
men, more like it.
The
pharaoh’s voice too on a different tone. “You don’t believe it’s the will of
the gods?”
“I
don’t believe there are gods.”
There
was a sharp intake of breath, and the pharaoh took a step backward at the
revelation. Seth smirked. He had never revealed that even to Bakura, but now
seemed like the best time he’d probably ever have to say it. He just wanted it
put on the record that he wasn’t about to waste his life away serving some
figment of everyone’s collective imagination, blindly obeying their false laws
like a brain-dead zombie. Like everyone else, in other words.
“Seth,
you don’t really mean that.” His voice sounded hopeful, even pleading.
“I’ve
never been more serious. There are no gods. There’s no reason for me to deny
myself something that everyone takes for granted and die a willing virgin for a
nonexistent deity. I don’t deserve to be limited like this. I’ve done nothing
wrong.”
“Seth…”
He trailed off. Apparently, there was nothing he could say to that.
They
stood there in silence for a moment. Finally, Atemu spoke again. “The other
priests are going to be coming soon. They wish to punish you before your
execution.”
“Let them.
I don’t care.”
“They’re
going to torture you.”
“I
know.”
“I’m
not going to stop them. Or even try.”
Seth
said nothing. They had only been friends and companions their entire lives –
why should he expect anything different?
“Do
yourself a favor, Seth…” Atemu said, almost imploringly. “Don’t tell them what
you told me… keep your beliefs to yourself. They won’t thank you. They’ll see
it as their duty to take it out of you… they’ll kill you, slowly, and
painfully, and you’ll be praying before you die… even if you don’t believe. I
don’t want to see that happen. At least now, your death will be quick…”
“Should
I be thanking you?” Seth asked archly. He probably should. Atemu was trying to
make this as easy for him as possible, without trying to do anything about it.
And he had no intention of revealing his blasphemy to his peers. He knew better
than the pharaoh what they would do to him.
Atemu
sighed. “Seth… I’m sorry. There’s nothing I can do about this. I wish I could…”
“You
can. You know it. All you have to do is let me go.” Not that he thought he
would. Not that he even really wanted him to. Where would he go? There was
nowhere he could escape to. He had to say it, though, just to prove to him what
a hypocrite he was.
“No,
Seth. The only one who could have done anything to change this is you – this is
ultimately your own fault.”
“Of
course it is. After all, what right do I have to want a normal life?”
“Seth,
you knew what you were getting yourself into when you became a priest. This is
your fault. If you didn’t want to make the sacrifices you knew would be
required of you, you never should have done it. I’m sorry to see this happen, Seth,
but it is your fault.”
Seth refused
to look at him. “I know that perfectly well. I’ve always been aware that I
would have to face the punishment for my so-called crimes… I’ve always been
ready to accept the consequences. If I were granted a sudden clemency and only
cast from the priesthood, I don’t even know what I would do. I’m ready to die,
if you’re ready to kill me.”
Atemu
looked at him sadly for a moment, then nodded with a sigh. “I’m sorry Seth. You
have until daybreak… Try to prepare yourself.”
Seth just
ignored him as he walked out.
