Chapter 2
Seto managed to be civil for the entire dinner. In fact, he said not ten words during the meal, apparently content to sit there and watch the interaction between his brother and his lover, and occasionally poke the abnormally small portions of food on his plate. Otogi didn’t appear to notice, and after his initial greeting and a couple aborted attempts at conversation, Seto seemed to disappear from his radar. Mokuba, for Seto’s sake, didn’t draw attention to him; he meant it when he said his brother didn’t like people, and Otogi’s presence was causing him to draw in on himself – not that he was really ever particularly talkative. He remained conscious of him throughout, though.
He and Otogi were enjoying dessert in the form of a champagne-soaked cheesecake and Seto was working on his second glass of the drink, sans cake, when Mokuba finally spoke directly to him.
“I have some good news, Seto,” he said with a smile, catching his brother’s somewhat guarded eyes. Seto merely raised an eyebrow in question, and he took Otogi’s hand on top of the table. His public lover smiled a little beside him.
“Ryuu’s agreed to move in,” he continued. Seto raised the other eyebrow slightly, almost unnoticeably.
‘Anything else you have to tell me?’
He shook his head just as imperceptibly. ‘No, I haven’t told him yet.’
Seto’s eyebrows both descended to their normal position. ‘All right.’ They knew each other well enough to not have to bother with verbalizing their conversation.
“All right,” Seto said with a nod toward both of them. “I’m happy for you.” He raised his glass slightly toward them, then drained it. Otogi grinned, and Mokuba smiled and leaned over to kiss him.
The glass was replaced on the table with a tiny sound that carried magnificently through the silent dining room. The sound of Seto’s chair sliding back was infinitely louder. Mokuba broke the kiss and glanced over in question, finding him standing and watching them unobtrusively, his long fingers lightly set on the impeccable tabletop.
“If you two lovebirds don’t mind, I believe I’ll go to bed now.” He didn’t smile, but he seemed genial enough.
Otogi nodded politely. “Goodnight, Kaiba.” That told Mokuba just how far he had to go to achieve his true goal… Otogi wasn’t even comfortable enough with him to call him by his given name, though they’d be living together. Not that Seto really engendered that kind of familiarity…
Seto only nodded in reply, and silently turned to walk away, Mokuba still having said nothing. He’d have to talk to him later, alone…
Seto disappeared through the doorway and toward his rooms, and Mokuba smiled and finally looked back toward his lover. “You,” he told him with a light kiss, “will be living in my rooms, unless you’d prefer otherwise.” He grinned, and Otogi’s answering expression confirmed his opinion of just how unlikely that was.
“You only wish you could be rid of me that easily,” the elder said with a smirk, and pulled him closer for another kiss. Mokuba smiled slightly and wrapped his arms around him, gently asking for entry with his tongue. Otogi teasingly denied him for a moment before giving in.
Mokuba, eventually, broke it. “Come on,” he said with sly smile, standing up and pulling Otogi by his hand. “Somebody’ll take care of this.” With that, they left the dishes sitting on the table and darted down the hall toward Mokuba’s bedroom, making at least a token attempt to be quiet as they passed the room where Seto was presumably sleeping.
Seto was lying fully clothed on his bed as though he had just dropped there, his cheek pillowed uncomfortably on his arm, when he heard Mokuba and his lover giggle their way past his door, reflecting that limbo was an awful place to live.
Mokuba would tell him soon, though, and then this waiting would be over.
He rolled over slightly and began watching the door. Mokuba should be coming so that they could talk, as he knew he wanted to.
Mokuba awoke next to Otogi, and smiled as he looked at him. A glance at the clock told him that his alarm should be going off in about three minutes; plenty of time to lie here in utter comfort and just stare.
His hair out of its ever-present ponytail, the smooth locks contrasted nicely with his lover’s pale skin as they draped over his bare shoulder and slim neck. He somehow managed to look pristine and well groomed even first thing in the morning, even after a fairly ‘active’ night. Amazing. As opposed to Mokuba; he didn’t need a mirror to tell him that his own hair was frightening. He might dare to show his head in public after a good half hour with a brush.
He couldn’t help himself; he reached out and lightly brushed a silky strand of ebony from Otogi’s cheek. His lover, who had a tendency to sleep much like a piece of lumber, neither stirred nor woke, and he smiled again. Seto would have woken the moment he shifted in the bed, let alone actually letting him touch him while he slept.
A raucous ringing noise suddenly blared from the table behind him; time to wake up. He sighed and rolled his eyes, rolling over and bringing his hand heavily down on the top of it and searching out the snooze button. Nine more minutes of peace…
Looking back to Otogi, he had to smile again. He was still completely asleep. Well, that was why the snooze button… He slid out of bed without disturbing him and gathered his clothes without looking, putting the dirty ones from last night in the basket in the bathroom and laying his clean ones out on a chair. With ones last glance at his lover, he slipped into the bathroom and began the water for his shower.
He made an effort to make it quick, since they’d both have to use it, and walked out of the bathroom with his hair hanging limply against his head. Seto had told him that he looked a lot like a drowned cat with his hair wet; he honestly couldn’t see the resemblance.
Otogi was grumpily, blearily staring at the clock, which he had apparently just managed to stop from yelling at him. Mokuba smiled at how asleep he still looked.
“Come on,” he said cheerfully. “Time to get up.”
“It’s seven o’clock,” his lover said blankly.
He almost had to laugh at him. “Yes. Seven o’clock in the morning.”
Otogi immediately fell back down on the bed and pulled the blankets over his head.
Now he did laugh aloud as he pulled his pants on. “Come on. Wake up.”
Otogi’s reply was muffled, but audible. “Go to hell. I’m not even alive until nine… I didn’t even know there was a seven in the morning…”
He pulled in his shirt, unbuttoned, with the tie hanging around his neck, and leaned on the bed, pulling down the blankets and kissing his lover’s neck lightly. “Come on. Get up. Go take a shower, and I promise there’ll be coffee waiting when you get downstairs…
Otogi glared sleepily at him. “I hope you burn in hell,” he muttered, as he forced his lithe body out of bed. Mokuba just smiled and kissed him, watching to make sure he made it into the bathroom and got the shower started without falling asleep again, then finished with his shirt and tie and left to see to his promise of coffee.
He could smell the coffee from the top of the stairs. Some thoughtful servant was already making sure he wasn’t a liar… He grinned as he hopped downstairs and grabbed a steaming mug, with a thanks and a quick compliment to the cook who was working on breakfast, being sure to mention last night’s dinner as well. She was beaming when he left, assuring her that he and Otogi would be down shortly.
Then he went back up to visit Seto.
He cracked open the door and peeked in, smiling as he saw Seto still asleep. Making certain not to make the slightest noise, he crept inside and shut the door behind him, silently crossing the thick carpet to crouch beside his bed. He looked so peaceful and beautiful, even if that wouldn’t normally be a word he’d allow to be applied to himself. His hair was in some disarray, mussed cutely and barely sticking out from under his cheek and the side of his neck, and he lay lightly on top of all of his blankets, leaving them utterly undisturbed, still fully clothed in the plain white button-down shirt and black pants he’d worn the night before to dinner; even his slippers were still on.
It seemed a shame to wake him, but he wanted to touch him to badly to deny himself. He might have tried to wake him with a kiss, a la Sleeping Beauty, but he knew from experience that Seto had a tendency to get violent if woken suddenly, and had borne embarrassing bruises from such ill-planned actins before. Instead, he lightly stroked the backs of his fingers across his cheek, brushing some hair away.
Seto was instantly awake, his blue eyes wide and looking directly at him. He relaxed after a half a second though, and closed his eyes again. “Mokuba?” he said quietly, and stirred, stretching a little. “What time is it?”
“Hey, nii-sama,” he said, and leaned down to kiss him lightly. “It’s almost quarter till eight. You fell asleep with your clothes on.”
“Did I really…” Seto said, and sat up slowly. He yawned small-ly and ran a hand through his hair while the other supported him. Mokuba smiled and sat beside him, wrapping one arm around him and kissing him again. “Mm… did you and Otogi have fun?”
“Yeah, it was great.”
Seto’s eyes searched his face for a moment before he sighed lightly. “You haven’t said anything to him yet, though.”
Mokuba shook his head. “No… I figured I’d wait until he got all settled in and everything. ’Til he had his stuff and everything was official and whatever else.”
“How come?”
Mokuba grinned. “Because if he was all settled in, it’d be harder for him to leave; he might accept us just out of convenience.”
Seto smiled a little. “Let’s hope so.”
“Impatient?” Mokuba asked with a grin. “You want some hot Dragon lovin’?”
“Either that, or your ‘Ryuu’ will decide he can’t handle it and leave…”
Mokuba frowned. “Don’t say that,” he said. Seto just shrugged a little. Sometimes, his realism and his pragmatism could be a real downer… Mokuba definitely did not want to be thinking about the very real possibility that Otogi would not only not want to be with them, but would denounce them – him – possibly even publicly. He had assured Seto that no such thing would happen… but he was still worried.
“He won’t,” he repeated again. Seto just shrugged once more. He sighed a little and rubbed Seto’s arm gently. “Are you going to go to work?”
“I’ll probably stay here. No reason to go in, after all.”
“Are you sure?” Mokuba studied Seto; he just nodded. “All right… Ryuu and I are going to go soon. I’ll be at work; Ryuu’ll probably have to take care of some things, and he’ll be working too. I’m not sure when we’ll be home tonight.”
“All right,” Seto said, maybe a little quieter than normal, but sounding much as he always did. “If you need anything, you know how to reach me.”
Mokuba nodded and squeezed his arm slightly, as he stood up. “I do. I’ll see you later, then.” Seto just nodded, and he left.
Otogi was just coming out of their room as Mokuba stepped into the hall. He spotted him and smiled, waiting beside Seto’s door for him. His lover appeared almost awake, and greeted him with only a light scowl.
“Have a nice shower?”
“Since when is there an a.m.?” Otogi demanded sulkily, but not resisting the arm put around him. “And even if there always has been, why do we need to be up at such an ungodly hour?”
“Well, for one,” Mokuba said mildly, “it’s a work day. Plus, if you’re going to catch a ride with me, I’m leaving now, so you are too, and lastly, don’t you have more to do than just work today?” He smiled, and Otogi returned it, apparently almost against his will. “Breakfast first, though.”
“There’d better be breakfast,” Otogi grumbled. “If I have to be up before the sun…”
“The sun’s been up for at least an hour already,” Mokuba said with a laugh. “Come on. Have some coffee, some breakfast, and then the world’ll be a much brighter place.”
By the time they drove off in Mokuba’s car, they were both laughing and hanging on each other. And Seto watched them go and sighed as he turned back to his empty room.
They didn’t return at all that night. Seto stayed up all night, waiting for Mokuba’s car to return, occasionally working but more often just sitting there and listening, and sometime after dawn he sighed and let himself finally fall asleep.
