Summary: Jou manages to defeat Yami who, in a fit of anger, hits him
with a mind-crush and refuses to undo its effects. This leaves Seto as the only
one who can help him, but in order to do it, Seto has to acknowledge the
memories of his ancient past that have now fully returned and that he's
refusing to accept as real.
Author’s
note: Plot bunny adopted from Storms, Memory acceptance bunny. Though I have veered somewhat from the
original concept, it was that wonderful bunny that spawned this story.
Seto Kaiba moaned
weakly, and with tremendous effort, rose from his bed. He managed to take a few tentative steps
toward his bedroom door before a wave of dizziness forced him to wrap his arms
around the bedpost to prevent himself from falling to the floor in a helpless
heap. He waited out his wooziness, and
when he felt that he could move without passing out he resumed his path toward
the door. He wanted to be downstairs
when his unwelcome ‘surprise’ guests arrived on his doorstep. He knew the drama that was unfolding at that
very moment, and he knew that any attempts to turn them away would be
fruitless, having already tried that when Yugi had first telephoned. Obviously it hadn’t worked because Otogi,
with Jounouchi in tow, was on his way to his house at that very moment. To make matters worse, they were bringing
that hunk of golden metal that Yugi swore he had a connection to. Seto didn’t believe in magic, he didn’t
believe that Yugi shared his body with the spirit of an ancient pharaoh, and he
certainly didn’t believe that he shared an existence with that pharaoh’s
priest. He denied it all, even as the
spirit of the ancient priest, (who did not exist, he reminded himself), was
draining him of all his strength to protect that third-rate duelist Jounouchi,
from the terror in his own mind.
He had been aware of
events at the Mutou household from the start of their unfolding earlier. The priest (who did not exist) had been
tapping into his strength for some weeks now.
Normally, it was just a small amount that would make Seto a little light
headed for a short moment while the priest tried to reach out to him. Tonight had started out no different than
any other. There had been the usual
greeting from the priest, and then his focus had shifted to Jounouchi. During the past few weeks, Seto had also
noticed that the priest was obsessed with the blond, calling him his
Katebet. It was whenever Jounouchi was
around that the memories of his past were the most vivid, and the priest’s
pleas to be released from his prison were the strongest.
Seto had done an excellent job of ignoring
the priest and of passing off the memories as nothing more than fanciful
dreams, ignoring the fact that these ‘dreams’ occurred while he was wide-awake. Dreams of his duties as one of six priests
in the service of the pharaoh were easily explained away, as he had heard and
dismissed that theory as ludicrous before. The same applied to the dreams of
the Shadow Games. What was not so easy
to ignore, and therefore much more disturbing, were the ‘dreams’ of the
priest’s personal life. Memories of
events and people that had been lost to time played out in his mind in stunning
detail. One such person was the
priest’s lover, whom Seto readily admitted was an extraordinarily beautiful
woman. Though her glossy black hair was
typical of the general populace, her figure was not. She was tall for a woman, standing just a few inches shorter than
her man. Her ample bosom was firm, her stomach was flat and her hips had a
pleasing gentle curve. Her legs had a
good shape and seemed to stretch on forever.
The one disturbing aspect of this woman was the uncanny resemblance she
had to one Jounouchi Katsuya. Other
than the hair and the gender issue, the face that stared up at him from his
‘dreams’ was a feminized version of the blond duellist. Her personality was very much like the blonde’s as well… fiercely
loyal, brash, and passionate… The only difference he could see between the
ancient and the modern, beyond the obvious, was that the ancient loved the
priest with a passion that defined the ages, whereas the modern ~hated~ him
with similar intensity.
As he inched his way
down the stairs, step by agonizing step, he wondered why he was bothering to
think about the imaginary workings of his mind when there were more important
things for him to concentrate on—such as making it to the bottom of the
staircase on his feet and not on his ass.
He had just reached his destination when he was slammed with yet another
dizzy spell. ‘Damn!’ He steadied
himself against a table in the hallway until that wave passed. “What the hell is going on?” He muttered to himself, though he was
perfectly aware of what was happening, he was just in denial. He knew that Otogi was pulling up to his front
gate at that very moment, and that the intercom would be buzzing… now… “Yeah?”
He said into the intercom in a very unKaiba-like manner. He waved his butler, Haruka Ouji, off as the gentleman came rushing in to answer the buzzer and to
assist his employer, who was in obvious distress.
“Kaiba? It’s me Otogi. You need to let me in. I have
Jounouchi with me, and we have to see you,” the voice crackled over the
speaker.
Haruka, ignoring his
boss’s directive, wrapped an arm around his waist and nudged his shoulder under
the arm of the weaker man. “Here, let
me help you sit down,” he said as he led Seto to a Queen Anne chair with little
difficulty. Once he was sure that the
brunet would not fall over, he returned to the intercom and replied that he was
sorry, but it was impossible for Kaiba-sama to receive guests.
“No, it’s
okay, Haruka, let them in. They’re
likely to break down the gate if you don’t,” he said, internally cursing the
light, breathy manner in which those words were spoken. Despite the fact that he still felt wobbly
on his feet, he stood and attempted to walk toward the front door.
“Honestly,
Seto, you're as stubborn as mule sometimes. You stay seated,
and I'll get rid of them. Then we can get you upstairs and back into bed where
you belong,” the exasperated man stated impatiently, dropping any and all
pretences of formality.
No other
person in Kaiba's employ would dare, nor would get away, with speaking to him
in such a familiar, and some might even say disrespectful, manner. But then
again, Haruka Ouji was more than just a butler. Over the years, he had
proven himself to be a staunch and stalwart ally and something of a substitute
grandfather to both of the boys. Both
Kaiba brothers held him in that esteem, accepting behaviour from him
that would be deemed intolerable from any other employee, knowing full well
that it was dished out with a heaping spoonful of love.
Ouji looked
much younger than his 65 years, despite his once jet-black hair having gone
completely snow white. His 5’ 8” frame was in better shape than most
men half his age and his face was gently lined but, instead of making him
appear old, these lines only added to the overall gentle character of the
man. Haruka had been in the employ of the deceased Kaiba since his
youth, but he had never cared much for the man. His loyalties had always
lain with Gozaburo's dependants—first his wife and the child they had
conceived together, and then much later, his two adopted sons.
"Haruka,
you have no idea how much I want to do just that, but unfortunately I can't. Or
not yet, anyway. I have to be the one to get rid of them," Kaiba said
breathlessly as he once again made his way slowly across
the foyer toward the front door. He was thankful that Haruka
allowed him the freedom to do it on his own, but was hovering close enough to
catch him should he fall.
With a
tremendous amount of effort, Kaiba opened the door and stepped out onto
the front porch just as Otogi's car came screeching to a halt at the bottom of
the stone steps. No matter how composed he wanted to appear to his
unwanted guests, he couldn't stand without feeling like he was going to topple
over, and it was with much chagrin that he had to reach out a hand to one of
the stone columns that flanked the porch for support.
The annoyance
was replaced with amusement as he watched Otogi try to coax Jounouchi out of
the car. The idiot was refusing to budge, and though he had yet to get
physical, Kaiba could tell by the way that the dolt was waving the rod around –
which Kaiba wished Jounouchi would stop doing as it was making him dizzy – it
wouldn’t be long before the blond lashed out at his raven-haired friend. Unfortunately before he could witness that
spectacle, the voice that he had come to loath spoke up and cajoled his Katebet
out of the car, telling ~her~ that they had reached his palace. Kaiba wondered mirthfully what the blond
would think once he realized that ~he~ was being referred to as a ~she~. The picture in his mind of a sputtering,
indignant Jounouchi made him think that perhaps there was an upside to this
whole episode after all.
Suddenly
Jounouchi stopped his flailing, and looking rather contrite, he spoke to the
empty air beyond the dice master’s shoulder. “Oh, okay; sorry, Seto,” he said,
his change in attitude and the obedient way he climbed out of the car bringing
a stunned look to Otogi’s face and further adding to Seto’s amusement.
The blonde’s
expression when he gazed upon the mansion was one of complete wonderment.
'Moron,’ Kaiba thought, ‘it's not like you've never seen it before'.
‘But, she
hasn't. Or at least not in her present state, my newer self,’ the annoying
voice said in his head.
‘I am not
you, and you do not exist, so get lost,’ Kaiba mentally spat, cutting off the
spirit before he could say anything more, and then clung onto the pillar with
both hands as another wave of vertigo threatened to send him toppling down the
stairs.
‘You are a
stubborn one,’ the voice declared. Turning his attention outward to Jounouchi,
he told the blond to come up the stairs and give his sceptre to his twin
brother, who was standing at the top.
‘I am not
your twin brother!’ Kaiba screamed mentally at the voice in his head. He turned his attention to Jounouchi and
watched as the blond bounded up the steps and held the rod out to him once he
had reached the top.
‘No you’re
not, but it’s the easiest way to explain it to her.’
“Seto said to
take this. He said you could help me,” Jounouchi stated, his honey eyes
imploring the flesh and blood Seto to come to his aid.
The absolute
trust that he saw reflected there, with no sign of recognition or knowledge of
the animosity that the two had for each other, caught Kaiba off guard. Wanting
to help Jounouchi, he found himself reaching out to take hold of the offered
rod. “Oh no you don’t, you sneaky
bastard,” he hissed, realizing just in time that, had he actually taken
the thing in his hand, the spirit inside would have been able to
merge with him. He pushed Jounouchi away from him, and almost sent the
unsuspecting blond head over heals down the staircase. Seto fell to his
knees as more of his strength was drained from him, the protective golden glow
of light that was wrapped around Jounouchi intensifying as the priest saved him
from what could have been a devastating accident.
"If I
don't exist, Seto dear, then what is the harm in touching the rod?” Priest Seto
drawled sarcastically. As he righted
Jounouchi and placed him back on his feet, the spirit warned Kaiba that if he
dared to hurt his Katebet, he would exact his revenge and it wouldn’t matter to
him that the flesh and blood brunet was an extension of himself.
Kaiba was
about to protest that this was Jounouchi, not the priest’s lost love Katebet
but at that moment, Otogi charged up the stairs screaming at him, lambasting
him for what he had almost done to the blond.
Otogi’s
yelling was an annoyance, but what truly fascinated Kaiba was Jounouchi’s
response to his raven-haired friend.
Though not afraid of him, the blond seemed definitely puzzled by Otogi’s
behaviour. “It’s almost like he doesn’t know what he’s saying.”
‘She
doesn’t.’ Ignoring Kaiba’s protest that Jounouchi was a he, Seto continued,
‘It’s the curse; she’s seeing everyone as a Duel Monster. It’s only because of
my magic that she doesn’t see him as an enemy. That is also why she can see you
as a person, even if she doesn’t recognize you.’ The priest thought deeply for a moment and then continued. ‘The
Pharaoh must have done something, because no matter what I do, the Pharaoh’s
other appears as an attacking Red Eyes.’
Before Kaiba
could answer, and before Otogi could respond to being virtually ignored,
everyone’s attention was drawn to a taxi pulling up behind the dice master’s
car. Yugi jumped out of it as soon as it came to a stop, with Honda following
close behind. It was only Honda’s hand on Yugi’s shoulder that prevented the
smaller male from flying up the stairs.
Kaiba was
startled by a whirr of gold as Jounouchi leapt behind him for protection. The idiot wrapped his arms around the
brunet’s neck, shoved the rod in his face, and insisted that he take it. He was sure that the Red eyes would break
through the barrier of the Blue Eyes soon, or so the blonde kept saying. They
had to be getting tired, and would Kaiba please help him? Seto said that he
would, so why wasn’t he?
“Get off me
Jounouchi,” Seto hissed as he shook the blond from his shoulders. Turning
around he added, “And stop shoving that thing in my face.”
“My name is
Katebet, not Jounouchi, and Seto said you would help me,” Jounouchi whined as
he attempted one more time to get Kaiba to take the Millennium rod. When Kaiba still refused to help him,
Jounouchi looked up into the empty air and stated to Seto that his twin brother
was an ass and that he didn’t much care for him, no matter how pretty he
was. After chewing on his bottom lip
for a moment, he asked with more than just a hint of innocent curiosity if Seto
looked just like his brother.
The priest
laughed heartily, and told Jounouchi that he hoped he could judge for himself
soon. Kaiba scowled and futilely tried to convince himself that Jounouchi’s
words hadn’t affected him in the least – that he didn’t care what that loser
thought of him, or that he seemed to like the priest better. Seto had pretty much given up trying to deny
that the Priest was just a figment of his imagination, but he was adamant that
he was not going to let the spirit merge with him. It was bad enough listening to him whine while he was still
trapped in the Millennium Rod, and he couldn’t imagine how much worse it would
be having him trapped inside his head.
“Kaiba, why
haven’t you freed him yet? I fully
expected ~you~ to have this taken care of by now,” Yugi yelled from the bottom
of the steps, the regal pitch of his voice sounding more like that of the
Pharaoh than that of the gentle teen he normally was.
“Well, you
thought wrong, Yugi. I can’t help you.”
Kaiba was incensed at Yugi’s assumption that he should just give up his sanity
in order to help the blond.
“Oh no,
Kaiba,” Honda added. “We know you can, and we’re not leaving here until you
do.”
Kaiba
chuckled darkly. “If you don’t leave, Honda, I can have the police remove you
for trespassing.” He motioned for Huruka—who, until that moment, had stayed
quietly in the shadows—to get the police on the phone.
“Seto, I
don’t quite understand what is going on, but it is obvious to me that this
young man is in distress and that you are the only person that he trusts,” the
kind man said as he turned a sympathetic eye to Jounouchi, who had plastered
himself against the house when Yugi had started to talk and was now whimpering
in fear. “I think that perhaps a better
idea would be for everyone to go into the house, and for someone to take him
someplace where he will feel that he is out of harm's way.”
“A padded
cell, perhaps?” Seto snarked, and then
he was slammed with another dizzy spell when the priest took offence to his
sarcastic tone.
“I’m not
quite sure what you mean by that, but I know it’s not nice.”
‘Fine, fine,
I’m sorry I insulted your precious Katebet. I’ll get Haruka to take ~her~ to a
guest room where ~she~ can stay.’ He
then spoke out loud to his butler and asked him to take Jounouchi into the
house and set him up in one of the guest bedrooms, preferably one in the wing
of the house that was not used at present.
“Honestly
Seto …” the butler said under his breath, and then turned his attention fully
to Jounouchi to try and coax him into the house.
Kaiba rolled
his eyes as the priest spoke to the blond, assuring him that it was okay to go
with Haruku, and that yes, the priest would stay with him. Jounouchi raised himself up from where he
was crouched against the house, and with one last glance over his shoulder to
ascertain that the Red Eyes was not trailing him, he followed the butler into
the house.
As soon as
the front door closed behind Jounouchi, Yugi and Honda ran up the stairs, both
of them yelling at Kaiba, demanding an explanation. Seto, unable to withstand
the drain on his energy any longer, closed his eyes and slumped against a
pillar.
“It’s obvious
that this is taking a toll on you,” Yugi said, his tone automatically switching
to one of concern as he motioned for Honda and Otogi to help the brunet.
Ignoring the scowls of all three, he said, “Let’s get you inside and we’ll
discuss this once you are more comfortable.”
“There’s
nothing to discuss, Yugi, I refuse to let that… that… thing, share a body with
me,” Kaiba stated stubbornly, even as he allowed the other two teens to help
him into the house. He directed them to
a sitting room just off the front foyer, and then fell gracelessly into the
first available chair.
“Kaiba, you
know you’re going to have to relent sooner or later. Even you can’t be heartless enough to want Jounouchi to stay like
this. Besides, you must know by now
that as long as he is under this curse the priest is going to continue to
protect him, which means that you’ll be in this weakened state until he is freed.”
Yugi’s word
stung Kaiba more than he would care to admit.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to help Jounouchi; he just didn’t want the
spirit of the priest to merge into his own body. The current situation was the only reason he needed to validate
his point. Could any of them guarantee that the priest ~wouldn’t~ take over his
body and do something irrational like Yugi’s other half had done tonight, or
even worse, that he might be a raving psychopath like Bakura’s was? Was he strong enough to prevent the other
from wreaking havoc over all of their lives? “Yugi, if I do as you’re
demanding, what happens if the priest decides to take revenge on the Pharaoh
and I can’t stop him? I know for a
fact, that beyond his concern for Jounouchi, he feels a tremendous amount of
rage over this incident, and it is directed squarely at Yami.”
“Oh? I’m sorry, Kaiba, it’s just I’m so concerned
about Jounouchi that I hadn’t considered anything else” an embarrassed Yugi
stated. “Come to think of it, Yami
~did~ say that he thought that those two had a connection to each other.”
“They were
lovers,” Kaiba answered matter-of-factly.
“In fact, he’s already threatened me for almost sending her, erm, him
down the stairs, so I have no doubt that at the very first chance he gets, he
will be gunning for Yami.”
“Yeah, about
that, Kaiba, you could have really hurt him… um… hold up, what do you mean
her?” Otogi asked.
“The priest
believes that Jounouchi is the reincarnation of his lover, who happened to be a
woman. I must say that their likenesses
have a striking similarity,” the brunet replied, not even bothering to hide the
amusement that overcame him every time he thought of what the present’s
reaction to that little morsel of information was going to be.
Honda and
Otogi obviously felt the same, as they were clinging to each other, laughing
uproariously. “Oh, wait till he finds
out about this… Mr. ‘I can’t get in touch with my feminine side, I don’t have
one’… was a girl in another life,” Honda gasped out between guffaws.
“Even better,
Lover, wait ‘til he finds out that he, or is it she, and the rich prick were
doing the horizontal mamba way back in the land of the Pharaoh’s.” Both teens collapsed in a fit of giggles,
totally the ignoring the angry glares sent their way by the other occupants of
the room.
“Would you
two get a hold of yourselves?” Kaiba
snapped at them, trying in vain to convince himself that he was not bothered in
the least by the fact that Jounouchi would be upset about the two of them
possibly having a shared past. “Yugi, since there is nothing that any of you
can do here, I suggest that you go home and work on the Pharaoh some
more. I’ll see you in the morning.” Kaiba dismissed them, rising from his
seat when Haruka returned to the sitting room to inform him of something that
he knew already: Jounouchi was settled into a guest room and was considerably
calmer.
“And leave
him alone with you? I don’t think so, Kaiba,” Otogi said.
“I’m not
leaving. None of us are. We’re staying here as long as Jounouchi is here and
under that spell,” Yugi stated, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Yugi, I know
this might be hard for you to accept, but you being here doesn’t help the
situation at all. As soon as Jounouchi
sees you he goes into hysterics, meaning the priest has to use more of my
energy to build a protective wall around him. And I nearly pass out from
it. Not to mention that because he is
relatively calm at the moment, I feel better than I have all night, and I’d
like to keep it that way.”
“As much as I
hate to agree with him, Yugi, he’s right,” Honda said. “Have you been able to
reach Yami at all? “
Yugi could
only answer with a shake of his head as the fight left him.
Putting his
arm around his buddy, Honda consoled him. “Don’t worry about it. I’m sure one
of them will cave soon. I’ll stay here with Jounouchi, if that’s alright with
you, Kaiba.” His tone indicated that it
didn’t matter to him what Kaiba said; he was staying.
“Fine, you
can sleep in the same room as Jounouchi,” Kaiba conceded, and then turning to
Yugi he added, “But, you have to go.”
Catching a glimpse of the sorrow that now filled Yugi’s eyes at having
been denied the chance to help his friend, he felt the stirrings of something
that could only be described as guilt swirling in the pit of his stomach. But,
he knew that the best solution would be for Yugi to convince Yami to
reverse the spell, and as Jounouchi seemed to be doing tolerably well at the
moment, he saw no need to act hastily.
With the directive to Haruka to first see Yugi and Otogi out, and to then
show Honda to the room that Jounouchi was staying in, he swept out of the room
with more energy than he had had all evening.
