Yay for Phantomness’s crazy brain! And the Mahaado as Yami’s
mother, biological or not bunny works really well for me. ^^

Chapter 2
Mahaado
woke up to find the Prince snuggled up against him. He was lying in bed. With
the Prince! The Priest almost had a heart attack right then and there,
especially when he noticed Pharaoh Akunumkanon sitting not five feet away!
“My
Pharaoh, I can explain-.”
Akunumkanon
cut him off before more could be said. Mahaado started praying to any god that
would listen that he wouldn’t get executed on the spot.
“Do not
worry.”
Mahaado
blinked at the Pharaoh as he sighed.
“Is
something wrong, my Pharaoh?”
“Only that
my son wished you to be near him. That is why…”
Well, that
would explain, it but even so…
“Mahaado,
did my wife speak to you?”
Mahaado
paled. How had he known? But honesty was the best policy when dealing with the
Pharaoh, so he nodded.
“Please,
tell me. What did she say to you?”
“She… told
me to protect the Prince and care for him.”
Akunumkanon
sighed heavily. “I surmised that she did. Might I request an explanation for
your eyes though?”
Mahaado
blinked. “My eyes?”
“And your
hair as well.”
Mahaado
blinked. Akunumkanon carefully picked up a hand mirror and held it out to him
expressionlessly. Mahaado’s eyes widened as he stared in disbelief.
His eyes
were now a pale, icy blue tinged with silver, and his hair was a lavender
shade, falling over his shoulders…
Impossible!
Had he – but no, he could feel his shape-shifting ability locking into this
form as default. So that would mean the Queen had… given him something.
He could
feel his magic too. It was different, almost with a feminine tilt? Oh
dear. So he did have her magic now. He remembered her vaguely whispering, but
it was all about protecting and loving Yami.
He could do
that easily.
“I… believe
it had something to do with her magic…” Mahaado said hesitantly. “She gave me
hers to better protect the Prince…”
Akunumkanon
nodded. Then, he sighed heavily.
“I know
that this is not the time, but I have a task for you.”
Mahaado
snapped to attention.
“War is
encroaching upon our borders. I cannot spare the time to take care of him, and
I do not want news of the Prince’s capture to become known.”
“You want
me to take him away.”
“Yes.”
“I will do
it, my Pharaoh.”
“Good.
There is an ancient Mage training ground in the desert. Here is the only map.
Destroy it when you have arrived. Keep him safe. I will send for you two soon.”
“Yes, my
Pharaoh.”
Yami opened
his eyes and stared at Mahaado with an adoring expression. Had he been
listening? The Magician was not sure, but he and the Prince were quickly packed
with supplies for their journey and sent off.
In the dead
of night, they took one of the Ka beasts and flew to the Sanctuary. After they
disembarked, the monster vanished, and the doors slid shut behind them.
And that
was when Mahaado realized they would not be leaving any time soon.
Yami liked
the Sanctuary. He could feel the walls and the floor humming with magic. It was
nice here, he was safe and Mother was with him and they would have food and
shelter and pretty things. He would make Mother pretty things since she was
pretty.
Yes, that
was nice.
Mahaado
sighed as Yami came up to him with something glittering in his hands. He did
appreciate the sentiments, he really did, but he had the feeling that whatever
the Pharaoh had hoped to accomplish by sending them here was not working out.
In fact, they might be heading in the completely opposite direction.
He fed Yami
and cuddled him and bathed him – though he tried not to look when he did that –
and he taught him harmless, pretty magics, illusions and such, being careful
not to push the boy too hard.
He probably
still thought he was five years old, instead of ten. Well, eleven now, Mahaado
thought idly.
“Mother?”
Yami prompted. Mahaado sighed inwardly and looked at the shiny object Yami was
holding. It was quite beautiful, a ring of delicate twisted golden wire. He did
not bother to ask how Yami had managed.
Yami was
powerful, and the magic in the Sanctuary liked him. It liked both of them,
actually. It allowed Mahaado into the Royal Library that had been sealed for
three hundred years, and it allowed Yami to play with it, creating little
creatures of mist and shadow before banishing them.
He slid it
on his finger with a smile. “Thank you, Yami.”
Yami gave
him a dazzling grin and another hug, before he ran off again. The Priest of the
Sennen Ring idly traced the pointers as he wondered.
Was he
making things worse by going along with this deception?
But he couldn’t disobey
Pharaoh’s direct order… then again, Pharaoh was not here… and unless he had
another copy of the map, he would not be here.
Mahaado had
no idea how things were going on outside, as his scrying spells all fizzled out
when he attempted to scry, and it was almost as if the Sanctuary didn’t want
him – them – to know what was going on outside.
So Mahaado
adjusted, and between studies, focused all his attention on the Crown Prince.
He had nowhere else to put it after all, and if not for Yami, he would have
gone mad long ago.
Sometimes
he wondered if he already was.
“Mother?
I’m hungry.”
Mahaado
smiled as he watched Yami walk up, dressed in his typical white tunic and kilt.
“All right, Yami.”
He willed
the Sanctuary, and it responded. He wasn’t sure if created food was like
regular food, but in any case they had been living off it for almost a year and
had suffered no ill effects. Yami climbed onto his lap halfway through, and he
sighed as he shredded bread and meat and fed his prince. His Prince.
Yami smiled
at him with large, innocent eyes, and Mahaado brushed his lightning bangs out
of his face absentmindedly.
It was all
right.
They would
endure this. And for a prison, it really wasn’t that bad… they could be
living off rats in a damp pit somewhere, after all.
Mahaado
shivered as he kissed Yami on the cheek, receiving a rapturous smile in
response. Better to stay here and stay safe, and protect his Prince from the
invaders and the dangers out there.
Yes.
