Dark Temptations Presents
Shopping, Sex and Fruitcake
Chapter 1
@-->-->----
Mokuba hesitated at the door of the most private room in the mansion - his hand on the doorknob. He bit his lip and considered the consequences of what he was about to do. If Seto found out, he'd likely make him shovel the whole driveway clear of snow... Not much of a punishment to some kids but the Kaiba driveway was almost as long as some city blocks! Not even thoughts of punishments like that could turn Mokuba's determination aside from its chosen course, though.
This was his last resort. His final option. The one place in the house where he normally didn't go.
The most likely place for him to find out what he was getting for Christmas!
Throughout the past week, Mokuba had searched through the entire mansion from top to bottom. He had done the guest bedrooms on Monday. The bathrooms and cupboards on the first floor on Tuesday. The same on the second floor on Wednesday - along with the ballroom and attic, since Seto had been away at a business meeting until late and Mokuba had been able to search for longer. The games rooms had been searched on Thursday - and Mokuba was still wondering why they had five billiard tables when Seto didn't even play billiards. He had then spent all of Friday afternoon carefully searching his brother's private sanctuary.
The room that would ensure Seto being labelled 'the boy with the weird obsession for the Blue Eyes White Dragon' if anyone from the press ever managed to get a photograph of it.
Even though Mokuba understood his brother's passion for his favourite card and Duel Monster, there were times he wondered if perhaps Seto didn't go a little far in his adoration of it. He'd thought that even before he'd seen his big brother's Blue Eyes White Dragon toothbrush. He'd known about the blue and white colour scheme and the posters and his brother had shown him the sculptured dragon lamps he'd had made especially for the room, but the painting had come as something of a shock to him.
He'd never known a Blue Eyes White Dragon could be painted to look so much like the Mona Lisa.
Mokuba had felt its blue eyes following him the entire time he'd been searching the room. It had been most distracting... and rather creepy.
Although not nearly as distracting and creepy as the secret stash of yaoi doujinshi Mokuba had found in the bottom drawer of Seto's bedside table.
He still didn't know what had shocked him more - the fact that they all featured a Blue Eyes White Dragon mating with a Red Eyes Black Dragon or his recognition of Seto's drawing style all throughout the books.
Of course... finding the Blue Eyes White Dragon vibrator in the same drawer had been more than a little disturbing too.
It was that experience that was causing Mokuba's hesitation - far more than any possibility of getting into trouble for what he was about to do. It was more than likely that this was the place where Seto drew his books and if that was the case... there were probably sketches and half-finished books there. The thought made Mokuba shudder, but he knew he had no choice. This was the only place it could possibly be, so he had to take a look.
Even at the risk of seeing more of his brother's horrendously out-of-proportion artwork.
As if a Blue Eyes White Dragon could be that well endowed... It would fall over every time it started to get aroused.
Taking a deep breath to calm his nerves, Mokuba opened the door to his big brother's home office.
A quick glance inside made him feel a little easier. There were no obvious signs of artwork or vibrators so Seto obviously had them put away somewhere, in case any of the maids came in to clean. Mokuba made sure the coast was clear before he slipped into the room and closed the door behind him. He grinned and started searching the room - beginning with his brother's filing cabinets and then moving on to the drawers of his desk.
It was the last room in the mansion he had to search, which made sense since it was also the most obvious place for Seto to put anything he didn't want Mokuba to see - like Christmas presents. Mokuba had deliberately left it for last due to that very fact. He'd been sure that his brother would have taken into consideration how obvious it was and so wouldn't have hidden anything there. But maybe Seto had been relying on his little brother thinking that!
Mokuba winced as his head began to hurt. Trying to think like Seto always gave him such a headache.
Mokuba frowned as his search turned up nothing. He was starting to worry. He'd searched everywhere else he could think of and the only thing he'd found - aside from his brother's very worrying collection of self-made gratification - had been an old, wrinkled, letter to Santa right at the back of the wardrobe in the room that had been Seto's while Gozobouro Kaiba had been alive.
As Mokuba began going through the bookshelves, testing each book to see if any were levers to secret drawers - Seto was paranoid enough to have had something like that installed - he thought about that letter.
He could remember the night he'd written it. He'd spent all day in his room waiting for Seto to come and play with him, but Seto had been kept busy at his lessons without even a half hour's break. When Seto hadn't even shown up to tuck him into bed, Mokuba had started to cry. But he'd remembered his big brother telling him to be brave and so he'd stopped. Determination to do something to help Seto had filled him and he'd slipped out of bed and found pen and paper. He'd written a letter to the one person he trusted almost as much as his big brother. The one person in the world who had never let him down.
'Dear Santa, I've been a very good boy this year and so has my big brother Seto. For Christmas, I don't want anything for myself but could you please give Seto some time to play. He really needs it. Thank you Santa! Love, Mokuba Kaiba.'
Mokuba smiled - and not just because he'd finally found a secret drawer. When he'd woken up the morning after writing the letter, he'd been upset to find it had vanished. He'd started searching for it, but then Seto had come to play with him and he'd forgotten all about it. Now that he looked back, the boy could see what had happened. Seto must have gone to see him that night, after he'd fallen asleep, and found the letter. After that, he'd gone to Mokuba as often as he could to play with him - even though it had earned him a lot of punishment from their adopted father.
The boy's smile faded and he pouted at the pile of drawing books and pencils he'd just uncovered. He very quickly closed the drawer again and hesitated as his conscience poked him. Seto had kept the letter all this time. He had taken all that punishment just so he could make his little brother happy. Now here that same little brother was, searching through Seto's bookcases for hidden drawers in an attempt to find his Christmas presents. How wrong was that? He couldn't believe he was doing something so stupid.
Mokuba stood up and turned away from the bookcase.
Of course Seto wouldn't be careless enough to hide the presents in the mansion. He obviously had them ordered and scheduled to arrive there on Christmas Eve. Which meant that - knowing his 'plan everything in meticulous detail' brother - there had to be a master list of the presents somewhere.
Mokuba went over to the desk and booted up the computer.
The password screen came up and Mokuba thought for a moment before typing in 'BEWD'. He smiled when the welcome screen immediately came up.
His brother was so predictable. This was going to be easy.
@-->-->----
Half an hour later, Mokuba groaned and dropped his head onto the desk. Either his brother wasn't as predictable as he thought or he was going to take out that year's title of 'Best Christmas Present Hider'.
He'd searched through all his brother's files and had thought he'd found what he'd been looking for when he'd found three folders - 'Mokuba','Gifts' and 'Christmas'.
'Mokuba' had been a list of all the events Seto was going to over Christmas. He'd highlighted them all in red, green or blue - complete with the colour code legend at the end of the file. Blue - the most common colour - indicated the events Seto wasn't planning on going to. Green were the events he was going to alone. Red were the events he was going to try and talk Mokuba into going to as well. The events where there were sure to be women who would try and flirt with Seto - unless Mokuba was there to be used as a convenient distraction.
Mokuba had made a note of the red events and was already planning how to talk his way out of them.
'Gifts' had been a list Seto's secretary had emailed Seto, with the names of everyone who had sent him a Christmas gift the previous year and what they had sent him, as well as what he was giving them that year. Naturally, it was cross-referenced with the file containing the list from the year before. There would be no 'same gift two years in a row' from Kaiba Corp.! That was just too tacky.
Mokuba had been rather amused to read his brother's notes on some of the gifts. The best one had been about a pudding someone had sent him that had given him gas. Seto was planning to have his revenge that year by sending the CEO concerned a box of the smelliest gourmet cheese his secretary could find.
After those two had not been what he'd wanted, Mokuba had been sure the folder marked 'Christmas' would be it. Rather than the list of presents he had hoped for though, it had turned out to contain nothing but quotes from various decorators and interior design firms on the cost of decorating Kaiba Corp.'s offices for Christmas. There were also drawings of their envisioned Christmas themes.
Mokuba now understood why his brother had been in such a foul mood in the weeks leading up to the decoration of the offices. The designs were bad enough but the prices for them were outrageous.
If he'd known Seto was looking at spending that much, he would have offered to decorate the offices himself. Even with the cost of decorations, Mokuba was sure he would have been able to earn himself a tidy bit of Christmas spending money.
It was something to consider for next year.
But all that aside... Mokuba groaned again and slowly sat up. He scowled at the computer - the resemblance to his brother suddenly very striking. There had been nothing about presents for him at all! He was sure he hadn't missed anything. He'd searched every file - especially the ones labeled with odd words or numbers or random letters. Even the files he'd had to decrypt had turned out to be just business related. Wherever his brother had put the list - and knowing Seto as Mokuba did, he was certain there was a list - it was not on this computer.
As Mokuba was debating the possibility of getting a look at the computer in Seto's office at Kaiba Corp., the phone rang.
His heart beating in his ears and his mouth dry from the shock of the sudden sound, Mokuba picked up the phone. "Kaiba residence."
"Mokuba... how many times have I told you not to identify the phone number in that way?"
"Including just now? Sixty-two." Mokuba forced himself not to look around to see if Seto was watching him. He rarely called home so early, even if he was planning on staying at the office until late. Also, the irritated tone of his voice suggested that whatever his reason was for calling - he was not happy about it. Could he somehow know what was going on?
With Seto... it was a very unsettling possibility.
Mokuba tuned back in to catch the last of Seto's usual tirade against giving out the Kaiba name when answering the telephone. He waited expectantly for his brother to go on and say why he was calling and frowned when all he heard was someone talking in the background. It wasn't like Seto to call when there was someone with him. Even if he was in the middle of a meeting, he always excused himself so no one overheard anything personal. "Is someone there?"
"I... Yes. There is. Mokuba... I have some things to take care of, but I will be home in time for dinner. I... There will be someone coming with me."
As he listened to his big brother's oddly hesitant speech, hope bloomed in Mokuba's heart. "Big brother... Did you finally ask Joey out?"
"How did you know...?" Seto's voice trailed off as Mokuba laughed. He groaned. "Why you cunning creature. I walked right into that."
"You sure did!" Mokuba was almost crowing with delight at having his suspicions confirmed. "I've known for a while now that you liked him, but I was starting to think you were never going to admit it to him."
"Mokuba..."
Hearing the warning in his big brother's voice, Mokuba knew he'd pushed his luck far enough. "So do you want me to be out of the way tonight then?" Well... maybe a little more pushing wouldn't hurt.
"No, there is no need for that. I am sure you will not be going into my bedroom tonight. Especially since you searched it quite thoroughly yesterday afternoon." Seto's voice was more than a little smug.
Mokuba winced, although his being caught didn't stop him from noticing his brother's admission about what he and Joey would be doing that night. "Uh... Would it make any difference if I denied all knowledge of it?"
"No."
"I didn't think so." Mokuba sighed. "So what got me? Hidden camera in your bathroom?"
"Hardly. That would be far too risky. Imagine the public relations nightmare if photographs of me coming out of the shower were to begin surfacing. I would never hear the end of it from agencies looking for underwear models. No... I put a hair in the top of one of my drawers each time I close it. I noticed last night that it was gone, meaning that someone had opened it. The maids only go in there to clean on Tuesdays. Considering the time of year..."
Mokuba stared at the phone in disbelief. "You put a hair... Seto... you're starting to scare me."
"What is so scary about trying to protect my privacy?" Seto sounded rather irritated.
In the background, Mokuba heard Joey laughing right before his voice came over the phone. Considering how loud it was, he must have been leaning in and talking right into Seto's ear. A mental image that was somewhat distracting, but not distracting enough to stop Mokuba from shamelessly listening in.
"The kid's got a point, Kaiba. Puttin' a hair in a drawer really is scary. I can't believe ya did that." Joey was still laughing.
"When you see what I have in that drawer, I believe you will understand." Had Seto's voice always been that husky?
"Oh? So when am I gettin to look?" Was Joey... purring?
"Later tonight, right after we..."
"Seto! I'm still here!" Mokuba barely managed to squeak the words out before Seto said anything that would permanently sear an image into his mind that he really didn't want there.
"Oh. Sorry, Mokuba."
"So you should be. I really like Joey and I'm happy you've finally talked him into dating you, but that doesn't mean I want to know the details! It's going to be bad enough if you both turn out to be screamers." Fingers crossed he'd said that last bit too softly for Seto to make out over the phone or else he'd be doing more than shoveling the driveway next week.
"What? Mokuba... did you just say...?"
Mokuba breathed a mental sigh of relief. "I was just wondering if I should order in some balloons and streamers. You know... to celebrate you finally getting a boyfriend."
"I believe I am beginning to see why some people refer to you as being a brat." Seto chuckled.
"Who? Me? No, I'm a perfect angel." Mokuba grinned. "Speaking of, it's time for me to go polish my halo. Did you want me to put another frozen dinner in the microwave for Joey? Or should I make it two, since it's Joey." It was Saturday night - the chef's weekly night off and the night the Kaiba brothers always had a simple, normal, meal together. That night was supposed to be microwave lamb with gravy, beans, carrots and potatoes - since it had been Seto's turn to choose the meal.
"Ah. No. I called to tell you not to get anything ready. Joey and I will bring something with us."
Mokuba grinned. "Pizza? I vote for pizza!"
"While I was thinking of Italian cuisine, I was thinking more along the lines of lasagna and pasta..." Seto trailed off as Joey's voice came faintly over the phoneline again.
"Pizza sounds pretty good to me, too, Kaiba." Was he purring again?
"Oh... very well. Pizza it is." Seto sounded both resigned and rather distracted.
Mokuba had always known there was a reason why he liked Joey - although he had a feeling he didn't want to know how the blonde teen was distracting Seto. He grinned. "Okay Seto. See you soon then?"
"Yes. We should be there in about an hour and a half. Oh and Mokuba... please remember to turn the computer off after you finish looking for your list of presents."
As the dial tone sounded in his ear, Mokuba stared at the phone in surprise. Then he sighed. "I should have known he'd be on to me. No wonder I couldn't find anything! He must have hidden them somewhere else as soon as he knew I was looking! But how did he find out? Someone must have told him I've been looking around the house. Probably that butler... I've been seeing him around an awful lot this last week and he's always had that disapproving look on his face. He hasn't liked me ever since I congratulated him on his new wig. How was I supposed to know he'd had hair implants? " He put the phone down and shut down the computer before heading for the door - still muttering to himself. "There's just one thing left to do..."
Mokuba left his brother's office and headed for his room, already making plans on how he was going to get a hold of Seto's wallet, chequebook and latest credit card receipts.
After all... Seto had to pay for the presents somehow.
