Someone was
rapping on the door. Or was it the window? Yuugi rolled over in bed, making a
soft groaning noise and burying his face in the pillow. The insistent tapping
came again, and he gave another groan, and just shifted position. This new
position, however, had the Puzzle (trapped under his body) digging into his
ribs painfully. Grunting with annoyance, Yuugi opened his eyes.
The room
was bathed in darkness, and he didn’t even remember falling asleep. Sitting
back onto his knees, the boy looked down at his crumpled school uniform with
confusion.
Tap tap tap.
His attention was pulled to the window, and Yuugi blinked. Someone was
throwing small pebbles at his bedroom window. Moving to the side, he slid off
the bed. The digital clock on the table read 3:24am, and Yuugi found himself astounding
how he’d managed to fall asleep.
Tap!
Another, bigger stone this time. Yuugi felt himself glare at the window,
and started towards it. Reaching up, he rubbed the sleep from his eyes with the
back of one hand, pushing the window open with the other. Poking his head out,
he looking out into the street hazily.
The streets were dark and empty, for the most part. But, underneath Yuugi’s
window in the upstairs of the Game shop, a girl was standing there. As Yuugi
watched, she bent down to pick up another pebble, then
raised her arm as if to throw it. Seeing Yuugi at the window, she smiled
eagerly and called up to him. Her voice was soft, but carried unusually well.
“Aha, you are awake, little Yuugi! Come
down, I have something to show you!”
Yuugi stared at the girl, blankly, for a moment. Slowly, the veil of sleep
lifted, and it all came rushing back. Nenet, the girl from school. She knew
about the Puzzle. She knew about the-…
… Wait…
“How did you know where to find me?” Yuugi made sure to keep his voice low.
“What are you doing here so late anyway?”
“There is no time for that! Come,
you must come with me!” Nenet’s
tone rose in urgency, as she glanced up and down the street, as if scared. “I know a way to bring back the spirit of
the Pharaoh!”
Yuugi froze, at the window. Her words washed over him like a tide, numbing
the initial shock and confusion.
I know a way to bring back the spirit of
the Pharaoh!
Could it be true? Could it be… even possible? Reaching down, Yuugi’s fingers
tightened around the Puzzle. If there was a way to bring him back, if there was
even a chance… shouldn’t he take it?
… Mou hitori no boku…
“I-… I’ll be right down! Just wait!”
Jerking away from the window, Yuugi tore his school jacket off the back of the
chair. Pulling it on, he left it open, letting the Puzzle dangle freely around
his neck. Pushing open his bedroom door, he snuck across the hallway, past his
grandpa’s room. He picked up speed again only when he reached the hallway
downstairs. Snatching the spare key from a hook near the door, he shut the
front door of the Game shop, and looked around wildly.
Nenet was standing near the door. She was smiling, but it wasn’t a pleasant
smile. Her eyes were dark and eager, and her smile was predatory. Yuugi felt a
soft thrill of terror, but held it down.
“You can-… you can bring Yami back?”
The girl’s smile grew. “I know of a way to return his spirit. If it goes as I
assume it should go, his spirit will return to the Puzzle.” She gave a brisk
nod, “As it was before.”
Yuugi’s heart gave a leap. To have Yami in the Puzzle again… to have that
comforting presence in the back of his mind… to be able to have his dreams
inside the Puzzle again…
When he looked at Nenet again, his eyes were shining; face set with
determination. “Show me how.”
Nenet’s smile widened, and Yuugi barely noticed how
unpleasant it was. A dark smile; ambitious. Nothing openly sinister, just… a
hint. Her voice lowered, and her words changed. Speaking quiet Egyptian now,
she leaned a little closer.
“There are people that would seek to
interrupt a ritual like this. We must be secretive. I need you to come with me,
to a place where we I can bring back the Pharaoh. I will need you to hold the
Puzzle, and I will also need some of you…”
Yuugi blinked, slowly. Some of himself? He didn’t understand. His voice
dropped to a soft tone as he replied. Yuugi’s Egyptian was accented, and he
stumbled over the pronunciation of some words, but he was apparently
understandable.
“Lead the way. I want to bring Yami back.”
Wearing a secretive grin, Nenet turned around and began walking down the
street. Her steps were smooth, but fast. Stumbling a bit in his haste, Yuugi
followed her, and slowly, they drew farther and farther from the Game shop.
---
It seemed like they had been walking through Tokyo for hours, when Nenet finally
stopped. The building looked ordinary enough; an old, disused family home, of
sorts. Nenet urged him on, quickly, when Yuugi stopped to try and read the
family name on the sign, and in the end, he just resigned to following.
Reaching the front door, Nenet reached out and slid it open. Beckoning for
Yuugi to go first, she slid the door shut behind them, and plunged the pair
into darkness.
For a moment, a slight terror made Yuugi’s pulse race. He couldn’t make out
anything beyond hazy, dark walls. To his left, there was the sound of
footsteps, and he turned towards them. Nenet was walking around the room with
practised ease, as if she’d been here before, many times, in the dark.
There was a soft click, and the
lights went on. Yuugi felt himself gasp, as he looked around.
The walls of the room were covered in crude drawings of Millennium Items. He
could see the Eye, the Rod, the Key, the Scales and the Tauk…
but some were missing. For a moment, his desperation regarding Yami subsided,
and he glanced at Nenet, curious.
“Where are the Puzzle and the Ring?”
Nenet looked at him, curiously. Her eyes were gleaming; “… Ring?”
Yuugi nodded, gesturing with one hand at the drawings along the wall. “They’re
all here, except the Puzzle, and the Ring. Why were those ones left out?”
Nenet turned her attention to the wall, scanning the drawings and frowning very
gently, “I do not know, little Yuugi.
But, come. We have no time to look at drawings.”
Yuugi opened his mouth to protest, then went quiet. She was right. Turning
to follow the girl, she led him to the only door in the room. Pushing it open,
Yuugi followed her into the room and gasped, quietly.
The contents of an Egyptian temple seemed to have been forced into this small
Japanese room. An altar set at the back of the room, set with gold. Steps led
up to it, and the room was decorated with drawings, and more complex
hieroglyphs. His steps slowed as Yuugi walked into the room, then
stopped. Nenet had turned, and was staring at him. As he noticed her, she
smiled her dangerous smile.
“This is very ancient magic I am going to
use, Yuugi. It could feel…” She smiled a little wider, shaking her head, “… Different, to the magic you are used to
feeling. If all goes as planned, the Pharaoh’s spirit will be returned to your
Puzzle, and it will be as it was before.”
Yuugi was shaking. His hands fumbled for the Puzzle, and he stroked it
soothingly. Yami coming back. Yami coming back, would
be… would be…
Swallowing around the lump in his throat, the small duelist
could do nothing else but nod. Watching, as Nenet walked up to the elaborate
altar, he paused just before the steps. Slowly, as he watched, she drew out a
long, vicious-looking knife. Alarmed, Yuugi took a short step back, and his
voice came out nervous.
“What… what are you going to do with that?”
Turning towards him, the girl gave a soft smirk. Transferring the blade to her
left hand, she held out her right towards him. Still speaking in quiet
Egyptian, she beckoned him towards the altar.
“The Pharaoh’s spirit has touched yours.
I need a part of your essence to call back the…” She shook her head a bit,
as if thinking of the word, “… The
memory, for the Pharaoh to follow. Come, come. I will not cut too deep.”
Yuugi was shaking, properly, now. Physical pain had never been his strong
point. Two baby steps took him to the steps, and he went up them slowly. Just
short of the altar now, he hesitated, then held out
his arm.
Nenet’s fingers wrapped around his wrist almost
immediately. The knife came down, and Yuugi braced himself, but she just cut
through his sleeve. Somewhere in the back of his mind, Yuugi thought to himself
Grandpa’s gonna be angry…, but that
didn’t last long.
Releasing his arm, Nenet grabbed the chain that was attached to the Puzzle, and
jerked it forward. Reacting immediately, Yuugi’s hands tightened around the
Puzzle, and he jerked it back. His eyes were wide. “Wh-what are you doing!?”
The Egyptian girl gave him a levelled stare. “I need to use the Puzzle’s power to call back the spirit. I doubt you
will know how to do it. Be calm, I won’t take it from around your neck, I just
need to move it closer.”
Ever so slowly, inch-by-inch, Yuugi relinquished his hold on the Puzzle.
Jerked forward, he found himself standing right in front of the altar, as Nenet
set the puzzle down on it. Grabbing at his arm again, she pulled back his torn
sleeve and readied the knife. He could hear her chanting, in Egyptian. Or, he
assumed it was Egyptian. He wasn’t paying too much attention; all he could
think of was the huge knife about to cut open his forearm.
Don’t think about it. You’re doing this
for Yami. Think of Yami. Think of him… don’t think abou-…
The pain was sharp and immediate, and Yuugi bit back a cry. Tears welled up
in his eyes against his will, and he watched as a dark thread of blood ran down
his wrist. It was a deep cut, and it stung. Blood was running freely down his
arm. Some of it dripped onto the altar, but some hit the Puzzle.
Suddenly, pain tore through his body. Yuugi let out a shocked noise, followed
by a painful whimper. The urge to pull away was overpowering, but Nenet’s fingers around his wrist were surprisingly
unbreakable. Pain was threading through his veins like fire, and it wasn’t long
until his knees buckled. Nenet kept the small boy over the altar, while he
scrunched his eyes tight.
It’s for Yami, it’s for Yami, it’s for Yami-…!!
Distantly, he heard the girl stop chanting. But it didn’t matter; nothing
mattered. It hurt so bad. Then, abruptly, the pain stopped. His body felt oddly
empty without it. He could still feel the blood running down his wrist, and the
cut stung, in a distant sort of way, but the pain was gone.
Then, slowly, as he raised his head, Yuugi felt it.
There, on the edge of his consciousness. A presence. A feeling. His heart
almost ached with the familiarity of it. Before he could stop to think, or even
question it, he sent thought.
… Yami?
Nothing.
Yuugi’s heart skipped, for just a moment, then…
‘Aibou?’
Shock and joy and a dozen undescribable emotions
tore through Yuugi’s senses. Reaching forward, he jerked the Puzzle off the
altar. His arm felt heavy, and oddly numb, but it didn’t matter. Clutching the
Puzzle close to him, nevermind it was covered in
blood, he held the awkward pyramid to his chest.
Yami! YAMI! You’re there! You aren’t
gone! You’re there! Oh gods, I missed you, Yami, I missed you…!
He send thoughts in a torrent of noise. As he did, he felt a quiet
confusion unfold from the other side of the link. A soft misunderstanding.
‘… Aibou, what
is going on? I can feel you, little one, but… this is…’
Yuugi’s
heart sank. He was afraid to even thing what was going on. Looking down at the
Puzzle, he realised with a jolt, that something was wrong. Atemu’s presence was
with him, yes, but it wasn’t coming from the Puzzle. It was…
Slowly, from Atemu’s side of the link, a stream of images came to Yuugi’s mind.
Where Atemu was right now. A single bed sat against a wall. There was a desk to
one side, scattered with Duel Monsters cards, and a bag resting messily on top
of it all. The window was open, and a light breeze was filling the room.
Something welled up in Yuugi’s heart, and he didn’t even have to send the
thought.
‘Little one… why am I in your room, while
you are still awake?’
“…id it work? Little Yuugi, answer me!”
Slowly,
hazily, Yuugi raised his eyes. He’d completely forgotten about Nenet. The girl
was panting; gazing at him with hungry eyes. She must have been talking to him
the whole time, but he couldn’t hear her. So many more important things.
“N-nenet…” Yuugi’s voice came out shaky. “He’s-… you-…
he’s back. He’s back!”
Nenet’s eyes shone. Her eyes flicked down to the
Puzzle, then back up to him, but then her smile faltered as Yuugi spoke.
“No! He’s not-… he’s real! I have to
go home!”
Turning, Yuugi dashed back towards the door. Pausing in the doorway, he turned
to look back at Nenet, and his smile was perfect and joyful.
“Thank you! Thank you, so much, for bringing Yami back to me!”
The door shut with a snap, and he was
gone. The last he saw of Nenet, she was staring dumbly at her hands; her
expression unreadable. But Yuugi had no time to think of Nenet.
Dashing through the streets of Tokyo, he barely registered that he didn’t
know where he was. He wasn’t following road signs; he was following a feeling.
A presence he didn’t need any map to find. He wasn’t even surprised when he
turned into his own street. Slowly, the Game shop came into view, and Yuugi
felt his heart jump into his throat.
Standing just outside the door, was a dark figure. Dressed in a
slightly-refitted version of Yuugi’s own uniform, the man’s dark hair rose in
many thick spikes; streaked with gold-blonde. As Yuugi drew closer, the man
turned to look at him. Yuugi felt yet another hard jerk at his heart.
Yami. YAMI. It’s YAMI. He’s BACK.
Atemu saw what he was going to do the second Yuugi thought of it. Bringing
his arms around, he barely jerked back as Yuugi hugged him, tightly. Small arms
curled around his waist, and Atemu held Yuugi against him just as tightly. The
smaller duelist was crying, and laughing, and crying
all at once. As they held each other, Atemu’s voice came smooth and soft.
‘I’m back, Aibou.
Under what miracle, I do not know, but I’m back.’
Yami… mou hitori no boku… my Yami… I thought you were gone. I was so scared,
because you were gone…
The Millennium Puzzle was trapped between their bodies, and Yuugi felt
Atemu laugh, across the link.
‘You never stopped wearing the Puzzle,
even though it had lost it’s power?’
I… it’s… your Puzzle. I couldn’t stop wearing it.
The arms around Yuugi paused, then tensed. Holding
him even tighter, Atemu gave a slow nod.
‘… It is good to be back, Aibou. Very good, indeed.’
