~~~ flashback
Silently, she watched them debate. She had known that they would do so; they were so alike when they talked about Egypt and so different when they talked about other things. Maybe much more important things.
She had asked them to allow her to take care of those sweet two boys, wanted to show them the miracles of her home . . . to teach them. She only hoped the men in front of her, arguing would not make matters more difficult than they already were.
With a slow turn of her head, she looked at her companions, locked their eyes and understood. She knew that she would take care of the boys even when those in charge were against it. Nevertheless she hoped to solve this without using her own magic; without the use of sneakiness and cunningness.
With a soft smile she turned back to the two, who were suddenly trying to raise her attention and watched them closely again.
They were so alike and so different. The one older, the other younger. The one calm and kind, the other easy to anger and stoic. So alike and than so different.
Her eyes twinkled delighted and her lips curved amused.
Solomon told her to take good care of them, to show them around when Mr. Nagazaki interrupted to reprove her to stay in Cairo for their safety.
Softly, she whispered her thanks and indicated a slight bow before she turned and moved out of their provisory office, her companions’ right behind her.
“I will not spend my entire time in this damn ancient hell hole!”
“You do not need to.” she said softly and looked over her shoulder shortly.
“Oh yes! You will! If only for punishment!”
“How so? I did nothing wrong and you know it damn well!”
She smiled lovingly and bent her head slightly to hide it while she listened to her companions banter. They were much alike either but not that different than and she shook her head, dearly amused by them. When she heard one of those two hiss an angered comment she actually had to touch her throat softly to prevent her happy laughter and stay out of their fight. She knew as soon as she would show signs of amusement they would try to tar and feather her.
“No, you two go and enjoy yourselves. I do not need your help here.” she alleged again and turned around a corner without waiting for their answer.
“But . . . you told us that you . . .” the younger one muttered at a loss of words for her sudden change of heart.
“Later. I do need you. Later.” she whispered and heard his soft sigh. She smiled softly and finally turned around to look at them. She could see her brother’s disappointment clearly and knew what he was muttering under his breath while his beloved smirked wickedly in a knowing kind of way.
Lovingly, she caressed his cheek and moved slightly in a sign for him to leave. For only a moment her brother looked at her and then sighed again in defeat. Slowly, he turned and trotted down the corridor they just passed once more.
There she stood just then and listened to her brother’s beloved evil laughter and his almost shouted replies of what exactly he thought of him and snickered softly until she went down the hallway and stepped through a door into the visitor’s aria. Slowly she wandered through different parts of the museum and thought about what she should teach them first. There were so many things they needed to know, needed to understand . . . needed to be able to do.
A short shimmer a bit afar raised her attention and she stopped shortly to watch those sweet boys in front of a grant painting talking and laughing. From time to time one of them would lift his hand and point at something and both would laugh and look at each other before they would talk again.
Her head bowed slightly but then she shook it instead. She would not bow without them seeing otherwise it would be pointless but it was too early to even think about that when there still was so much for them to learn and understand.
A shadow moved over her eyes and she had to take a calming breath before she could start her way towards them again.
###
They went through the museum again, did not know what else to do when they were not allowed anywhere else. They already had spent a week inside and still had not seen everything. The building and the exhibitions it held inside were arranged like a square and it was not easy to explore entirely.
However somehow they had drifted away from hordes of tourists and found themselves now in a little alcove where a picture in a strange arrangement was held.
It was a fragment of a papyrus scroll, enrolled and secured in a frame so temperature, light and humidity could not harm it too badly.
For a few moments both had stared at it and could not make out what it meant at all but strangely they thought it captivating, what made it impossible to look away let alone pass it. They could only stare and try to figure out what it was displaying.
“I still … this is really weird. I mean I can read that this is the history of Egypt’s creation but I still can’t grasp its meaning at all.” Yuugi sighed frustrated and pushed a hand through his strands.
“I guess you need to know the story to understand the picture.” his white haired friend mumbled deep in thought, trying to remember if he had ever heard it from his father or his co-workers.
“Would you like to know about Egypt’s creation?” a dark voice asked softly behind them startled both so they turned with a surprised expression.
The woman bent her head in greeting averted her eyes modestly while both boys scrutinized her slowly.
Her skin had the dark tan of most people in this country, covered in a tight beige traditional dress. She had a golden belt, which held two thin wraps with two diminutive tokens on it, around her waist and an ample golden neckline with a petite emerald on it, holding her dress shortly on her shoulders. Her wrists and top arms were covered in golden bracelets.
An alluring golden necklace in the shape of an eye decorated her throat.
Her hair the same black as most people had too, was smoothly flowing down her back only with one strand of hair behind each ear, wounded with a tight golden band.
Another emerald, embedded in small golden wings lay directly on her forehead and was held by another golden ribbon around her head, accentuating her cobalt blue eyes which shone with old wisdom and intelligence, which they probably should not have.
She was a perfect example of beauty and Yuugi himself felt slightly uneasy watching her so close when he was sure that no one was allowed to do so freely. He felt as if he had offended against a rule and could finally lower his eyes from her face and form. He blinked shortly in the direction of his new friend and knew immediately that the boy felt the same as he did.
A mystifying smile formed on her face when she noticed their reactions towards her looks and she stepped closer to them now standing behind them, facing the papyrus fragment.
Both teens tried to step backwards away from her but found themselves almost hitting the wall then, giving them no other option but to stay in their position.
Silently all three looked at the displayed piece of history for a moment until the woman spoke again.
“ ‘[These are] the words which the god Neb-er-tcher(1) spoke after he had come into being: ‘I am he who came into being in the form of the god Khepera(2), and I am the creator of that which came into being, that is to say, I am the creator of everything which came into being.’ (3)” the woman started to tell them in mysterious words, her voice suddenly so much deeper and more pure that both boys twitched in startlement, their eyes big and transfixed on the fragment on the wall.
“ ‘Now the things which I created, and which came forth out of my mouth after that I had come into being myself were exceedingly many. The sky had not come into being, the earth did not exist, and the children of the earth, and the creeping things had not been made at that time. I myself raised them up from out of Nun, from a state of helpless inertness.’ (4)
Nun is the primordial water which existed before creation, when the world was still formless.” she explained silently and motioned towards it carefully to not fully point at it. Of course, the tiny boys would notice her reaction; she smirked secretively when she became aware of their eyes on her for only a second.
“ ‘I found no place whereon I could stand. I worked a charm upon my own heart. I laid the foundation of things by Maat, and I made everything which had form.
[ … ] I had union with my closed hand, and I embraced my shadow as a wife, and I poured seed into my own mouth, and I sent forth from myself issue in the form of the gods Shu and Tefnut.’(5)
Maat is the form with her arms and hands held up. She wears the feather of truth on her head which is laid on her scale when a human dies.
Shu is the name of the god of air and Tefnut is his wife and the goddess of the moisture. Both can not be seen on this bit of papyrus.”
She closed her eyes shortly, feeling shining but confused gazes on her while she seemed to make a little prayer.
Yuugi bit his lip softly. He was not sure what he should do now when the woman spoke in a different tongue, in words which seemed to be older than her and he looked carefully at Ryou to be confirmed that he felt the same.
He wanted her to stop because he needed to ask Ryou if he could translate what she said when she spoke English and he needed to think about everything she told them already but he did not know how to form his words when he did not want to be rude while his mouth would not work anyway.
“This was actually translated from ancient hieroglyphics. Back then men found the stele and it was translated. Years later they had found this little piece of papyrus, which you can see now hanging here.” the woman explained with a kind smile and shining eyes.
Ryou wanted to ask, how do you know all this, but he felt slightly uncertain and knew that his mouth would not form his words when he was in a state like this. “Would you continue the … the story, please?” the shy boy asked instead and pushed a lock of hair, which hindered his sight behind his ear.
“As you wish.” she whispered with a smile. With a slight bent of her head the Egyptian woman started to talk in that dark voice again. “ ‘[…] I restored what had been taken away from them, and I appeared from out of the plant-like clouds. I created creeping things of every kind, and everything which came into being from them. Shu and Tefnut brought forth Geb and Nut; and Geb and Nut brought forth Osiris, and Heru-khent-an-maati, and Set, and Isis, and Nephthys at one birth, one after the other, and they produced their multitudinous offspring in this earth.’ (6)
Geb and Nut is the second male/female pair in our history. They present the earth and the sky. As you can see is Nut pictured as a beautiful woman, bent over her husband who offers his erect phallus to her in honour.” she ended in a respectful murmur and bowed in front of the fragment hanging upon the wall, her jewellery and tokens ringing softly, and surprising both boys at the same time.
“… Is this, what is called the novelty?” the white haired teen asked in a hushed tone and averted his eyes nervously.
“What is … eru-hent-an-maat?” the tri-colour haired boy asked confused simultaneously, repeating the words slowly and looking perplexed back and forth at the still bowed woman and his friend. He sighed with relieve when she seemed to gain her composure back.
“I apologies. I must have upset you.” she hummed softly and then looked at the two boys again, who still watched her wide eyed.
“Heru-khent-an-maati is the blind Horus and yes this is the novelty which is still admired in our country by a few. But its time is almost over I have to admit.” the beautiful woman ended with a smile and a soft shake of her head, what seemed to be in dejection.
Yuugi carefully looked at the bewildered Ryou and silently asked the question of what to do or what to say but it seemed his friend did not know the answer to that either. So both just stood there, looking baffled at the Egyptian woman and feeling stupid for it.
“I must apologize again. My time flies today and I have to leave you in your own companionship again. It was an honour to make your acquaintance.” she slightly bowed again and turned to leave. However, when she heard both sweet boys stumble over their words she just could not stop herself from teasing at least one of them.
“Akifa would like to see you like this.” she smiled at the white haired boy whose eyes widened even more and then hurriedly she swirled around and left with silent laughter when said boy stuttered his bewilderment after her.
“Wait! Why would they … like to see me like … this? What’s … what’s so special about … Who are they?” Ryou almost shouted after her but then could only shake his head. This was a strange … mysterious woman; she was gone as fast as she had arrived.
Sceptically he looked down at himself. He could not find anything special about his appearance; green T-shirt, blue jeans-shorts and his favourite pair of green slippers; really nothing special. He admitted that his shorts were rather … short and almost clang to his body but it was a nice temperature inside the museum to wear them and it would be hot outside when they would leave again.
Interrogative, he looked up at his friend again but Yuugi could not help him either and just shrugged puzzled himself.
Who was Akifa anyway?
“Yuugi, Nagazaki-san let me introduce you to Miss Ishizu Ishtar, her brother Malik and his … and to Marik Ishtar.” Solomon Mouto started but found himself stumbling over his words because he did not know who exactly this Marik Ishtar was. “They will be your guidance and company while you are allowed at the excavation. But before that …” and here the old man hesitated. “Before that we have to travel to West-Thebes.” the old man mumbled and looked at the Egyptian woman again.
The man standing next to his grandfather, Ryou’s father lifted a brow but then cleared his throat slightly and Yuugi was surprised that his friend suddenly sprang into action.
“It’s nice to meet you madam, sir and … sir.” the white haired boy mumbled and bent down deeply to show his respect. He did not know how to call them seeing that they seemed to be so different persons but having the same name.
Ishizu smiled fondly at the both of them and bet down herself. “It is a pleasure to meet you again.” she said and smiled.
“It’s nice to meet you too … again.” the amethyst eyed boy stuttered and bowed himself, looking sheepishly.
“As I said they will be your guidance. I will ride with Nagazaki-kun.” the old man said stoically and marched away, his companion right behind him, and smiled to himself. This would be an embossing experience for his grandson and his newfound friend, he could not wait to see their faces and aching bodies in the evening. Then it would show who the old of them was, he thought and almost let slip a soft giggle.
A confused look could be seen on little Yuugi’s face before he turned towards the Egyptian woman and her, now his companions too.
“Should we go then?” mentioned woman asked softly and turned around, guiding the way through a part of the museum the two boys would never get in by themselves. She smiled softly when she heard her brother laugh softly while she fastened beige coloured cloak around her, which covered her head.
“Who dressed you little one?” one of the men asked in his deep baritone voice and slung a jaunty arm around Ryou, pressing him effectively against the strong side of the man and hindering his walking substantially.
Shocked, the white haired teen looked up at the man and stared into dark violet eyes, outlined by coal and a little outwards swung reaching his cheek on both sides. Both had those framed eyes but the other one’s were softer and lilac not violet; they looked more the flower than a … carpet.
His hair was much spikier then his … companion’s ones, which actually seemed to flow down his neck, luxuriously lying on his shoulders but both had a sandy colour to it.
His stature was more muscular build and he looked like fighter while the other one was more well-defined and elegant, looking a bit more like he and Yuugi did though he was taller than them.
Both wear khaki coloured, baggy-looking trousers with lots of pockets and a black belt, while the fighter one wear a black tight top and the other a lilac coloured, sleeveless shirt, ending above his stomach, with a hood and two golden chains loosely attached to the front. Both had golden earrings (in both ears) with long sharp looking tokens on them and both sported golden armbands around their upper arms while only the elegant one had one at each wrists too, which almost reached his elbows.
“Are you going to answer little one or do I have to spank you before you do so?” the male snickered and seemed to like his idea very much when his eyes darkened a bit more.
Gasping, the shy boy looked away, his cheeks colouring hotly and his eyes swimming mortified. He had not noticed that he had stared at the man for so long when he just wanted to take in his attire.
“Marik stop teasing shy little boys and walk a bit faster, will you! Ishizu has already entered the car while you still stroll around here, holding kind but embarrassed boys back.” the elegant one said snidely and looked shortly over his shoulder.
The other man shook Ryou with his laughter, clutching his shoulder and made walking much more difficult for him.
Helplessly he looked at Yuugi but the teen had his eyes downcast and as red cheeks as he boasted himself.
“What do you think you’re doing right now?” the Marik one sniggered maliciously and held the little boy in his arm a bit tighter, accidentally making him squirm weakly.
“Malik would you please sit at the back with the boys?” the Egyptian woman asked softly, hiding her amused grin carefully.
“Of course.” the male, her brother replied in a sweet tone, broadcasting his venomous grin towards his lover and shaking his head.
“But I wanted to sit with them! Both are so sweet! Don’t you think lover?” the Marik one argued and blinked sadly. “By the way, your eyes betray you Ishizu!”
“By the way, your sad blinking is false.” she mocked right back and smiled kindly at the male beside him.
“You two really love each other.” the Malik one snorted and looked into the front mirror.
Two shy boys looked wide-eyed at each other and tried to tell the other that they were afraid because these people were insane, while one of them sat between them.
***
Yuugi could not believe it. Why had his grandfather left Ryou and him in the care of these people? It had taken him a while to tell both males apart because they looked so much alike and even had similar names. But he was happy that Malik sat with them and not the other one; Marik was outright scary and dangerous.
He had corrected himself a while ago. Malik and Marik were indeed quiet insane, Marik more … very much more than Malik.
Ishizu was not, she was just playful and very intelligent while she bantered with both (insane) males. However, she was downright terrifying when she handled the steering wheel of a car.
He already had countless bruises and his head felt dizzy because it was jerked around so much without his intention at all. Carefully he tried to look at his friend who did not look much better than him. Actually Ryou looked slightly green around his nose and he worried shortly for his friend until Ishizu sharply hit a sand dune again and the jeep went practically flying over the road.
A terrorised noise left his throat, almost a squeak and he shut his eyes tightly when his head took a flying tour again.
The Egyptian woman had mentioned that they would rest in Assiut for their lunch and little Yuugi could only hope that it was not so far away anymore when he had lost his sense of time out in the desert completely.
***
He had sighed in relieve.
Right then he still could not grasp his luck that they finally had reached the west of Thebes, ancient capital of united Kemet, Egypt.
Ishtar-san and her brothers … at least he thought both of them were her brothers … had joked about them never riding the school bus on the last kilometres of their journey and mutely he had considered his time in England, where he needed to ride the school bus every day indeed. But his rides than had been a blessing compared to that rally-racing, sand dune-crashing woman.
Yuugi had been shaky when they left the car and he had to admit his knees were kind of wobbly either. Both had taken a hold of their friend to support their weight while they tried their best to keep up with the speed of their guidance paces.
Mutou-kun had been laughing at them when they met again and had hugged the both of them like the grandfather he was but Yuugi had told him silently that the old man had his fun watching them as weak as babies. He had asked them if they wanted to eat something but both had to denied and took a leave to their rooms. Yuugi shared a room with his grandfather and him with his father.
Rest had been everything on their minds while their stomachs still produced an ill feeling inside their whole body.
The bed had been surprisingly soft when the entire hotel was decorated sparingly, almost like in ancient times with lots of pillars and less furniture.
Sleep had overpowered him immediately while he heard a soft yearning chime.
He had been quiet surprised when he woke and found Ishtar-san in his room, waiting for him too wake up.
“The other little one is already awake and waiting for you downstairs in the hall for your breakfast.” she smiled and went out of the room again.
Blinking, still sleepy eyes he did his morning routine and finally met his friend and everyone else sitting on a great table, eating toast.
Yuugi and him had looked at each other often, wanting to talk but could not. Ishtar-san, Sugoroku-kun and his father had been talking about the excavation the entire time, planning and scheming and even when he wanted to talk to his friend he thought their conversation really interesting too.
However, as soon as their breakfast had been finished they all broke out in a hurry leaving Yuugi and him completely confused by the sudden rush until Malik-kun stopped by and practically amassed them to stuff them into the jeep again. His friend and him had shared a short worried look before the car suddenly sprang into action and roared off and away.
The ride had been short and he thanked what ever god was listening for that but not less dangerous and maybe a bit … sickening. Ishtar-san said they would get used to it soon and he had to wonder how often he may be forced to ride a car with her again.
“ ‘For a period of nearly 500 years from the 16th to 11th century BC, tombs were constructed for the Pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom, which is the Eighteenth to the Twentieth Dynasties of Ancient Egypt.’ (7)” Ishtar-san explained in that dark voice of her’s again and Ryou really tried to understand everything while his brain was smashed against his cranium because he really wanted to know all that.
“ ‘The valley stands on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Thebes[,] modern Luxor[…], within the heart of the Theban Necropolis. The valley is known to contain 63 tombs and chambers[,] ranging in size from a simple pit to a complex tomb with over 120 chambers […] and was the principal burial place of the major royal figures of the Egyptian New Kingdom, together with those of a number of privileged nobles.’ (8)” she said with an alarming swirl of the steering wheel when she slightly turned her head back to them and Ryou had to close his eyes in fear that was suddenly shaking his full stomach to its limits.
“Ryou.” Yuugi whimpered and hoped his friend found it in him to look at him shortly. He did and with an distressed smile she pointed to the end of their trip almost right in front of them. And it seemed his friend had the same feeling he just had when seeing it, the holy land … and no more car rides … at least for a little period of time.
After a frightening cove into a parking slot both boys needed to take a deep breath until they could force their bodies to move out of the car. Ryou shortly looked at his friend and saw tears glittering in his eyes.
“You would not believe how glad I am that we finally arrived or I would have embarrassed myself deeply.” the tri-colour haired boy whispered so only he could hear it.
“Me too.” he mumbled compassionate and hugged him for a little moment to express that he felt the same.
“Look aren’t those two sweeties sweet?” Marik snickered and bent down towards them to see their eyes widen and their cheeks redden.
“Didn’t I tell you just yesterday to not tease little boys?” his lover asked and shook his head almost disappointed.
“Yes but it is such a fun! You should try it some days!” spiky-hair laughed and went over to him to wind an arm around his waist.
“You’re hopeless! I swear, you’re completely and utterly hopeless! Besides … I have enough at hands with you as my companion, don’t I?”
“Scaredy-cat.” Marik mocked and pressed his face into the bend of his neck shortly but his lover only scoffed and turned to their little companions. “Come on you two! There’s a lot to see and learn.”
Silently the boys followed them, looking around in wonder. The valley carried its name for good reason they noticed immediately when their eyes caught site of lots of guarded openings in the sand while a cliff top overlooked the scenery.
***
It felt so strange to be there. The chime he knew since his birth was the loudest and hurt badly today. It had never felt like this; what ever it was that he felt.
He had known this feeling before but today his mind could not grasp the slightest bit of it.
When they had left the car he had felt the chilly wind and it seemed to be stronger than before and briefly he had asked himself if it would be stormy by noon or if it was normal out there. After all it was his first time in this part of Egypt.
However he had thought about the wind then he could not feel it anymore. Everything around him seemed so far away while it was still so close.
The question if Ryou felt the same while he listened intensely to Malik-kun entered his mind but was lost before he could react to it.
“ ‘The Theban Hills are dominated by the peak of al-Qurn, known to the Ancient Egyptians as ta dehent, or 'The Peak'. It has a pyramid shaped appearance, and it is probable that this echoed the pyramids of the Old Kingdom, more than a thousand years prior to the first royal burials carved here. Its isolated position also resulted in reduced access, and special tomb police[,] the Medjay[,] were able to guard the necropolis.’ (9) ” Malik said and stopped shortly for them to enjoy the view. However Yuugi did not notice it.
He felt a strange pull towards … he did not know to what but he knew that he had no chance to go there and have a look for himself while he was with both Ishtars and Ryou. He had to get away from them. At the same time he knew that it was foolish to wander around by him, he would be lost in no time. His grandfather had forbidden him … them but the trembling of his body was telling him different.
He wanted to run and wanted to lie down. He wanted to laugh and he wanted to cry. He wanted to scream in anger and he wanted to howl in joy.
The conflicts his body held, made him feel dizzy and insensitive to his surroundings.
“Ryou …” he whispered almost inaudible asking for help but knowing that it was useless because his friend could not have heard him. And a short moment he felt surprised when his friend did turn around to look at him and seemed to pale instantly.
With foggy sight he watched exhaustedly as his friend tugged on the sleeve of … what was his name again?
Helplessly he tried to shake his head to clear his sight and could only watch defenceless as the other look-alike rushed towards him while he tumbled welcomingly toward the heated sand.
He did not feel Marik pick him up and carry him towards a rest-tent of some workers.
He did not hear Ryou cry his name in fright and worry.
He did not see Malik looking at him with a strange light in his eyes.
He did not know what happened around him in frantic.
Although he knew … he was lost.
###
Solomon Mutou tried his best while his old body protested against the movement he currently used it for. He definitely was getting too old for such excursions and silently he told himself that this would be the last time he would crawl into a tight hole in the ground and press himself through narrow shafts, made as a hallway in ancient times.
Right now he felt stupid and wiped the sweat from his face.
He definitely was too old for that.
Their guides said something but of course they uses Arabic so how was he supposed to understand them? Softly muttering under his breath he followed them anyway.
He knew that they wanted him inside the new found tomb because they were frightened and he knew Nagazaki-kun wanted him inside because he was known for his sensibility for traps and games. It was not less important that he himself knew a lot of ancient Kemet too he thought but knew his colleague thought different about that.
Both workers, their current guides, had told them about a high hall in between the passage shafts and that they were frightened to go on before checking out for dangerous traps.
His body trembled slightly in anticipation while he tried to calm his joyous mind carefully and he wondered briefly how he had livid so long without this feeling bubbling and overflowing his body.
He took a breath of relieve when they finally tumbled into the hall and he closed his eyes shortly. The air was still suffocating but at least he could breathe freely here other than in a tight hallway.
He noticed the greedy eyes of their workers but could sense their fright as well when he followed their eyes.
Two giant snakes with slightly bent heads and open maws seemed to watched them trough their equally giant ruby eyes.
In the dim light he suspected the stones to be false but was proven wrong when one of his companions shifted the torch in their hands.
All four large rubies, two for each snake shone and sparkled tempting and fastened the eyes of their watchers on them immediately.
“This one is easy.” Nagazaki-kun muttered annoyed and turned his head around. To Solomon it seemed that the man did not want to have him with them and he could only suspect that it was because of the later coming fame.
But he knew that the both of them were different in so much aspects of live, so he only watched when Nagazaki-kun picked a stone out of his pocket and threw it into the room.
Solomon could not even blink when suddenly sharp poisoned needles flew through the air and startled cries of fright out of their companions, who almost let the torch slip.
Only slightly bemused Solomon looked at the ground, fastening his eyes on the bottom hatch on which the just thrown pawns lay.
He stared silently at it for quite a while Nagazaki-kun tried to persuade the workers to follow him on.
They could see the end of the hall passing into a narrow shaft again but they did not dare to move. They knew as well as everyone that no one was as skilled as Solomon Mutou when traps and ancient games were on task.
With a little sound of thought the old man crouched down to have a better look and noticed almost invisible differences of all those basement slabs.
“Ah. As you see there are different slabs here. I guess there are quite a few more needles coming to fly our way if we step on them. Try to only step on the immerse ones.” he said with a clear voice and a little bit of joy in it when he heard Nagazaki-kun mutter under his breath again.
His mind was still working well it seemed and not at a wrong time at all.
“Lead the way.” one of the workers finally said in broken English and looked almost relieved at him. Nodding, he gazed at the ground again and carefully stepped on one dip bottom hatch.
A gust of cool air rushed past them when they finally after many calculated steps reached the next hallway.
By now fire of anticipation and adrenaline coursed through his veins even when he thought that he did not want to creep through those tight dusty shafts of hallways again. He really had missed the adventure of excavation. Maybe Yuugi would step in his feet one day … at least that he hoped at the moment because he wished him to feel all the richness of those courageous emotions.
The hallway was narrow as all passages in tombs were but not as long as the first one and Solomon guessed that they did not need to dig around anymore because from now on the passage would be free … only tricky and testing.
The next large hall awaited them in complete darkness and he noticed the distressed whimper of the workers in minor amusement.
“Hold up the torch would you?” he asked kind and calm in hope to soothe their nerves a bit. He could not hold that against them because this was an ancient holy temple for them after all.
Amazement flew through his entire body when his eyes fell of a giant golden Horus statue which held an empty tablet when the torch lit the room fully.
Wonder entered his mind when he noticed the blank slab and he tried to figure out what the secret of this stony thing was.
Carefully he stepped forward awaiting the next trap until he stood directly in front of the giant statue without finding any.
He had to admit that he was not actually a tall man but he was not the smallest either however beside the tablet, which was a bit larger than he was he looked really tiny he guessed.
Amazed he touched the tablet gently trying to take in the texture and every ripple on it while Nagazaki-kun watched him like a hawk as the statue was.
“Oh.” he almost laughed when he noticed the little groove at the bottom of the stony block under one of Horus’ claws.
“Give me the torch, please.” He mumbled and held out his hand not bothering to look behind him when his mind was fixed at the situation at hands. With a deep breath he held the fire against the strangely black rut and snickered joyously.
The tight channel was tar of course, which lit up the entire stone tablet as soon as fire touched it and made ancient writing visible.
Of course he should have thought of that earlier he guessed and almost shook his head. Though he chuckled when he heard the awed hush of Nagazaki-kun and the workers. He new the stoic man and father of Yuugi’s newest friend loved the writing of the Ancient as much as loved to decipher it.
“ ‘Beyond here lies the resting Place of a great Pharaoh. Only those who show respect may enter, all others will be engulphed by the pit of Shadows!’ (10)” the man read aloud in awe.
“Mhm.” Solomon mumbled and titled his head slightly. “It could be translated like this either: ‘Ahead is the sleeping place of a great Pharaoh. Trespassers’ bodies will be eaten and their souls will be thrown into the darkness.' (11) I think that is possible too.” the old man said and bent forward a bit while he tried not to burn himself on the lit fire in the groove.
He could practically feel that Nagazaki-kun thoughts when he compared the hieroglyphs to each other. Other the Egyptian men which had wanted them inside because of their fright. They were still frightened but now it seemed as if they would bolt every second while they fought against their greed.
“I guess you’re right. These hieroglyphics have more than one meaning to them. See this one? It’s exactly as I thought …” Nagazaki-kun explained and pointed at different symbols imprinted on the tablet.
Solomon could only smile, while trying to decipher the writing the man was quiet pleasant to be around. He could only muse at why the man changed like that when he was reading the earliest writings.
However, their musing over the tablet was interrupted when one of the workers suddenly screeched loudly when a door opened under him and swallowed him completely.
Shocked they listened to his cry of pain when he fell and landed it seemed when his Egyptian companion bent down and hollowed something into the tight shaft, probably asking his friend if he was okay at least Solomon hoped so.
They took a relieved breath when from bellow came an angered grunt and suddenly the Arabic man lit the narrow shaft up, which turned out to be a stair case.
Slowly and with careful steps they followed their companion, who went down there rather hastily and Solomon could barely suppress a soft chuckle when he saw the man rubbing his back grunting and miffing in annoyance and slight pain.
He came to an abrupt halt when he laid eyes on the trap room they had entered through he stair case and could only nod when Nagazaki-kun whistled quietly in wonder.
It was dark except for the two torches their workers held and that probably made the maze, which had surprised them with it sudden appearance look more dangerous.
He could see a few dead ends but mostly his eyes were fastened on the dangerous and armed looking statues, which blocked some other ways out of the labyrinth.
One of their workers took a step to the side and another while he stared at the statues in fright. Although his voice was strong and laden with greed when he ordered them to guide his companion and him through the maze. He must know that there was not a long way to go anymore when he had to face such dangerous traps now.
What he had not noticed however was that his foot pushed a little, very sensitive pressure-button.
All four of them were quiet surprised when the spiked walls on their left and right sides sudden sprang into movement, which was directed towards the centre of the tight space they currently occupied.
Angered and in slight panic Solomon was pushed toward the maze and felt Nagazaki-kun stumble against him in anger either.
He could hear the blood fire through his veins and felt his heart beat heavily in his thorax when he took the first step unto the labyrinth and watched in shock when the statues sudden moved towards them threatening either.
His mind was in a rampage while he watched one armed statue moved closer towards him with every ticking second.
Nevertheless his mind had not enough time to think of a way out when their workers, suddenly were their captors and pushed them forward again with hasty commands and rough voices.
“Their feet.” Nagazaki-kun muttered into his ear when he was pushed against the old man again.
Both archaeologists looked at the statues feet at same time and suddenly Solomon knew their secret.
“Aim your left foot forward, never the right.” he mumbled softly so only his colleague could hear him.
“The respect towards the pharaoh …” the younger man whispered again and knew he did not need to word it farer when his old companion nodded assumingly.
Now they only needed to find their way through the dangerous passage while the statues did not move further.
“Were did they take the revolver from?” Nagazaki-kun asked softly while they decided to each try another way but Solomon could only shake his head, not knowing the answer to that either.
However he signalled his partner the right way through when he could suddenly see it clearly in front of his eyes as if he was watching a movie.
Nagazaki-kun nodded and hurried towards his old colleague while a statue behind him suddenly sprang into movement again and one of their captors screamed in pain when a scimitar took him down, his friend howling in anger with the loss.
But the man seemed to be blended with greed because after a moment he only shrugged his shoulders and nodded. “More for me.” was all they could understand out of his mouth.
Solomon bowed in front of the last statue and hopped over a tiny projecting part, closely followed by his younger companion and sadly the remaining one of their captors.
With a deep breath he watched the spiked walls touching and ending their way out for ever.
“You passed the maze across the pit of shadows.” Nagazaki-kun mumbled already deep in thoughts again and pointed beside the last passage way where a few hieroglyphs lit up when the light of the torch hit it.
Slowly and with heavy breaths they looked back at the maze not able to see the fallen captor anymore but know that hungry shadows had swallowed him greedily. Both had a strange feeling touching them while both tried to persuade themselves that the shadows were not alive.
“Move on!” the Arabic captor said and pushed the old man forward again and watching in delight when he fell because he had not been thinking of him anymore.
“ ‘Ye will be judged by the creatures of the stone. Only the pure of heart are permitted to pass, all others will lose their souls to the darkness.’ (12)” Solomon spoke softly surprising his companion and captor slightly before Nagazaki-kun could see the writings imprinted in the wall to his left either.
“ ‘The Ka residing in the tablets will judge you. Cowards’ souls will be eaten. Warriors will be shown the way.’ (13)” Nagazaki-kun read on and confused their captor shortly.
He did not understand why they always stopped at writings warning them of tormented death coming upon them when everything clearly said the same to him.
“Move on!” the Egyptian said again this time more forceful than before, pushing them again. Carefully they stepped unto the narrow space before a single narrow bridge with imprinted monsters on it. On each side of the tightened crossing a deep and dark precipice showed itself and howled in greedy voices capturing their imagination and pushing them towards it with no end.
“You go!” the dark coloured man shouted thinking to overtone the howling below them and pointing at Solomon Mutou aggressively.
The old man took a deep breath and touched Nagazaki’s arm shortly before he stepped unto the tight passing, strictly looking ahead of him, trying his best to not sweep his eyes to the left and right gaping abyss.
A loud scream behind him disturbed his concentration and he turned around to see Nagasaki and the man wrestle with each other, the torch lying forgotten on the ground a few feet away from them. The pistol was pointed at him though and he could not take his eyes of it when the Egyptian man suddenly pressed the trigger and a bullet shot noisily out of it straight towards him.
Pain exploded in his shoulder and he felt himself fall, thinking his life would end here and angered that it had to end the way he had not chosen it to.
His surprise overtook him slightly when he looked up and saw his fingers cramped on the stony crossing, letting him dangle dangerously close to death above the shadows.
“Malik! Hurry up and help!” Ishizu shouted while the wind ripped at her dressing and hair, hindering her to see her brother clearly.
Ryou watched forlorn when his guide and his companion stormed off leaving him distressed behind with the still unconscious Yuugi lying in a hammock. Silently he whispered a prayer to which ever god wanted to listen to him and hoped to not freak out in surprise and fright.
Had Yuugi not said something about the wind before?
Weakly he watched as guards and workers alike hurried around trying to protect ancient tombs and openings in the Valley of Kings.
“Sand … coming soon!” he heard someone shout while the wind seemed to pick up around them even more. Slowly the white haired boy took a step forward, he wanted to help too, wanted to have a task he could think about.
He hated it to watch helplessly.
He had done this before when his mother and sister … when his father …
He wanted something to focus his mind on and work for it to happen!
The soft song he normally heard all day long suddenly was gone and he felt even more vulnerable without it soothing his ruffled nerves. Where was it gone to all of the sudden? Why was it gone at all?
But he knew that he would not be able to find answers to his questions and dejected he could do no other than watch over his friend while hell broke out around them.
Carefully he gripped Yuugi’s hand and tried to calm himself with the thought that he was not alone and that he had to protect his friend … but of what?
“Nagazaki-san! Come here and help me bind this leash!” he heard and his head whipped around to lock eyes with Ishtar-kun, the softer one, crying out for his help.
With a deep breath and a short fight for control over his body he let the hand of his friend lose and ran towards his guide as fast has he could while he felt the lashing of the wind full force for the first time.
His mind stopped his work at all and left him to react on instincts while his frightened emotions seemed to whirl around his form, terrifying him to no end. Why the soothing chime was gone when he broke in panic, when he needed it the most? Why?
His hands hurt where the leash Ishtar-kun and he tired to secure cut into his flesh and eyes watered heavily while the stormy wind tried to pick the both of them up and fling him away to let him pass to what had been his for centuries but had suddenly been ripped away from it again.
“Come on!” he heard the young man at his side shout out again and tried his best to be not swapped away while he followed him to one specific opening in the sand which was not worked on. No one tried to secure the opening and no one seemed intent to do so.
“Why …?” Ryou started broken when his voice suddenly was swallowed by the rough texture of the sand.
“They need to get out of there … soon all they’d die down there!” Ishtar-kun screamed against the loud voice of the wind itself.
They? Who were they?
“Mutou-kun … with … Nagazaki … workers … frightened!” the blonde Egyptian tried to tell him and the soft boy actually was frightened when he could only hear pieces of what the man was saying when he stood directly beside him.
Suddenly however it strung him like a slap into his face.
His father and Yuugi’s grandfather were down there! Had Yuugi not told him that his grandfather was needed because of the deadly traps lying deep below the sand?
He had always been at home, alone when his father went to an excavation. He had always thought of the wonders his father was able to see. He had always been awed with the histories his father was able to learn about and to understand when he sat at home alone only wishing for him to come back and tell him of all the wonders and fates he had met; to come home to his only son and …
This was the first time his lonely spirit was aware of the danger his father was in every time he went into an ancient tomb.
Another enraged scream reached his ears while he tried his best to not let loose of the crossing. He really was not ready to die here when Yuugi was waiting far above him for him to return so they could go home together. What would his little grandson do when he lost him either, the last remaining of his relatives?
Dying via falling from a stony passing was not an option here!
If only his body strength would not leave him so fast, if only his body would not be so old already! As a young man he would be back on the top of the bridge easily even with a shot shoulder but now … in his age it was not that easy at all.
Even if dying here was not an option he feared the moment his grip on the stone would lessen and leave him falling into roaring shadows.
A pained grunt reached his ears and he tried not to think of his chance of rescue being knocked out cold while his captor was well and would either leave him hanging here until he fell or would help that deadly fall himself.
Another strange sound he had never heard before touched his strained ears and he thought to imagine a slight golden light flickering shortly above him while he tightened his grip even more.
However when he looked up he looked directly into deep dark crimson eyes in a face so similar to his beloved grandson’s but so different at the same time.
Solomon’s eyes widened in fright and shock, his grip lost its strength and he felt his fingers desperately trying to find a new spot to hold on while he new that he would fall any moment now.
Where only was Nagazaki? Why did he not hear anything from him anymore?
The tall and muscular figure above him suddenly bent down and touched his hand, reached his wrist and held it in a secure grip.
“n-m šsp tw r ?w Š??mwn ?” (14)
Solomon was sure that his imagination took its toll now because this could not be true. An ancient person kneeling above him, holding him secure and talking to him. He was so sure that he must have lost enough blood through his wound that he started to imagine things. How could that happen in a moment like this?
Though the ancient figure above him turned that boring blood-red eyes away just then, looking at only god knew what and suddenly his grip on the stony crossing was secure again but the figure was gone. At least he hoped it was gone when another golden light flashed above him and was swallowed by dark shadows.
He could hear another pained and than panicked scream torn from a rough throat but as fast as it had come it was gone again and suddenly it was deathly silent while he tried to figure out how they had manoeuvred themselves into this strange situation.
Steps followed the silence and he thought for a short minute that Nagazaki was on his feet again when this ancient figure was back, looking down at him again with such determination and …
What was the other thing he could see in those dangerous ruby eyes? Shortly he remembered the snakes in the very first room but his thoughts were interrupted when the figure above him spoke again.
