Nowhere Chapter 1 – The Stray Lambs Summary: Ryou and his friends are enjoying a holiday in Egypt, when their car breaks down, stranded for miles. They quickly learn they are not alone and one by one they are hunted and taken captive by a madman that lives under the sand YMxR “Quick, Honda! Take a picture!” Jou grinned childishly as he posed next to a statue of an ancient Mummy, imitating its open mouthed expression and crossed arms like a zombie. “Haven’t even left the airport and already he’s causing a scene.” Kaiba muttered under his breath, as he picked up another suitcase from the conveyor belt. “Well this is the first time any of us have left the country.” Yami laughed as he watched his two friends wrestle over the disposable camera, readying to exchange fists. Yami Mutou and Seto Kaiba were both students at Domino University and by the end of summer will be official third years, on their final year and not far away from taking their final exams and graduating, ready to face the adult world. However, the two tourists did not first meet in class, but at a Duel Monster tournament; a popular game in America but immensely popular in Japan. Kaiba was the renowned Champion and given the title “King of Games by Maximillion Pegasus himself, the creator of the card game. Yami, however was a new player that appeared out of nowhere at a local tournament, breezed through each rounds and faced Kaiba in the final round for the title. To everyone’s shock, the Novice won by a mere string and Yami was given the Title. Since that day, Kaiba challenged Yami time and again but no matter how much he improved, Yami was just one card ahead of him. Kaiba hated Mutou with all his fibre but once he passed his school exams with the highest mark in Japan, Kaiba put all leisure activities aside when he went into University to study business. Kaiba even locked his deck away so that he would not be tempted, but he never expecting to run into his arch rival at the exact same learning institution. A bond was formed and even though Yami called the stubborn brunette his friend, Kaiba did not. They hung out and spent large amounts of their time together, the two were still not real friends but there was no denying that a bond of mutual respect and understanding had been formed since they gave up gaming. It wasn’t much but Yami understood from the very beginning what an honour it was to have Kaiba view him on such a level, so he accepted it with a smile and respecting Kaiba’s grounds. “Yami!” A childish voice called out in distress, causing both men to turn their heads at the sceptical The voice belonged to Yami’s little brother, Yugi Mutou, who currently was having difficulty getting his dark blue bag off the circling conveyor belt, bumping into other anxious tourists and businessmen who did not care for a “kid” messing around and causing a scene. “I’ve got it.” Two pales hands brushed against Yugi’s and together the other person gave Yugi enough lift to force his bag off the belt. “Thanks, Ryou.” Yugi smiled happily once his bag was safely on the ground. “I don’t see why the bags always get separate even though they went in at the exact same time.” He laughed, still quite embarrassed by how he must have looked only seconds ago. “Must be the staff trying to pass the time, to see how long they can make us wait.” Ryou smiled back and both boys laughed at their own little joke. Yugi Mutou and Ryou Bakura were both first years in university and roommates at that. Much like Yami and Seto, both were very different in many ways but at the same time so similar that they were just drawn to one another. Appearance wise they were very much opposites at first glance. Yugi was short for a normal boy his age. His hair was the most bizarre, spiked up with three different colours mixed to it, mainly black with a tinge of magenta in the right light, with blonde hair that formed his fringe (I refuse to say bangs, I’m not American). Ryou’s usual attire would normally be much different, with his simple jeans, an everyday t-shirt or buttoned shirt with a jacket or jumper. In short, Ryou dressed respectively in the way that was required of him by his father. The only part of his body that broke this rule was Ryou’s long lavender hair. Almost white in appearance his thick, untamed hair almost blocked his eye sight and feel comfortably over his shoulder blades. Yugi and Ryou shared another common trait, other then their smiles that had the power to attract people to them. They were timid, shy and reserved, but loyal and would jump in to protect their friends even though they know they are outmatched. Despite their close interest, and the rumours that had spread about them behind closed doors, Ryou was not Yugi’s closest companion. The honour of best friend would forever belong to Jou. Outside of Anzu, who he had known since kindergarten, Jou was Yugi’s really first friend and had been the best of pals ever since. Yet, even then Yugi could not deny that they shared something that not even Yami could compete with. Yugi was happiest with the blond and found himself becoming more annoyed with Jou’s increasing obsession with Mai, another friend who lived in America. “Yugi, you ok?” Ryou asked his brown eyes full of concern and worry at Yugi’s change in facial features. “You don’t have sunstroke already do you?” He smiled brightly, brushing the back of his palm over Yugi’s forehead. Yugi shook his head and blushed at the sweet gesture. “No Ryou, I’m just fine. Thinking about Anzu and how her parents would not let her come, especially after how long we planned this trip and all..” Yugi mentally smiled at how easily he made up that lie on the spot and almost glowed with pride Ryou nodded in understanding “I’m not surprised; her parents wouldn’t like the idea of her tagging along with six boys over the summer holiday, especially in a dangerous country like Egypt. Speaking of which it’s best all of us stay close while we’re here. My father was told me several stories about people who wander off, only to be kidnapped and much worse.” Ryou explained his body clearly upset as he shifted his stance. Yugi nodded in understanding, while Egypt may be a wonderful tourist resort, it was easy to forget about the dangers outside the resorts if one just opens their eyes and looked around “Yes, well I’m sure Anzu would have preferred visiting Mai-chan in America then travel in a cramped jeep with the rest of us anyway.” Yugi laughed, breaking the tension. “Ryou, your luggage!” Yami called, finally locating the last of their belongings that had ben holding them up in the overheated airport for the last hour. “Domo Arigato, Atemu!” Ryou smiled and both boys ran towards their elders. Even though everyone knew the elder Mutou as Yami, it was only a nicknamed given to him after defeating the Blue Eyed Champion, Seto Kaiba. Yami in their language meant Darkness, obviously given from how Atemu would normally dress in all black and leather. Atemu adopted the name and everyone reffered to him as such, but Ryou was still uncomfortable calling an upperclassmen anything but his given name. In truth, despite living on campus ground for a whole year, Ryou had not been aware that Yugi had an older brother who was also studying at the same university. It didn’t help matters that Yami was currently living off campus, unlike Yugi and himself who had room accommodations for their first year. Despite knowing nothing about the elder Mutou, Ryou was very aware of who Seto Kaiba was, the single smartest student in their university and possibly all of Japan. Ryou was studying game designing, another class Kaiba was juggling in his endless list of degrees; Ryou saw him many times in the block where they attended class. The pale haired boy never once thought he could ever talk to Seto Kaiba but that all changed when Yugi casually went up to the child prodigy and started a conversation with him. Ryou was surprised to say the least, and when Yugi introduced him, Ryou thought he would faint from the shock alone, but somehow managed to bow to his sempai respectfully without stuttering like a fool. It was then Ryou learnt of Yugi’s older brother and how similar they looked in appearance. If Ryou had to pick a word to describe Yami in comparison to Yugi, it would be strong. Yami was quiet, reserved and only acted when needed. He was scary to say the least, with his hard stare, intimidating smile and dressing from head to toe in leather did not help matters. He had a way of appearing taller then he really was just from how he carried himself and walked with an air of confidence that made him tower of his fellow classmates, a trait Ryou wish he could master. The said teen passed Ryou’s bag to Kaiba who in turn placed it on the trolley with Yugi’s now rescued suitcase, meaning all six of them were now present and ready to leave. “Honda, Jounouchi! We’re ready to go!” Yugi shouted happily as his two friends appear to have gotten distracted and were now browsing around the shop for souvenirs or a quick bite to eat by the looks of it. “Didn’t we eat on the plane not long ago?” Ryou mumbled to himself, but loud enough for Kaiba to hear. “When has that ever stopped those worthless fools before?” Kaiba growled in annoyance, considering the two hadn’t helped with the loading of their possessions. “Be nice Seto.” Yami purred, brushing against the taller man as he walked by, causing Yugi and Ryou to raise an eyebrow at each other. “Find then, those two can push the trolley, considering they were the ones that held us up.” Kaiba smirked deviously. “WHAT?!” Both boys cried in union. “Get lost Bastard! You were the one that made us carry the stuff at the airport in the first place.” Jou growled, clearly expressing his detest for having Seto company them on this trip. “Well, you didn’t expect Yugi and Ryou to carry the bags did you? And besides, since I am the one paying for the majority of this trip.” He stalked up to Jou, who in turn stood his ground as Kaiba pressed his face up close to the blondes, whispering in his ear, “I would be more careful who you insult, mutt.” “Yugi, Ryou, come. The car should be waiting for us outside by now.” Kaiba ordered as he happily passed Jou, snickering under his breath. The youngest boys both gulped at Jou’s face, eyes narrowed almost animal like, fist clenched tightly, his knuckles turning pure white. “Don’t worry man, I got it.” Honda said, placing a supporting arm on Jou’s shoulder, his eyes motioning for Ryou and Yugi to go on ahead. Yugi wanted to stay behind to cheer up his best friend, but knew at this stage, Honda was best prepared to handle the blonde if he burst into a violent rage. Reluctantly, Yugi nodded, bumping shoulders with Ryou, signalling for him to follow suit. “I know he brings it upon himself for being so short tempered, but I just wish Kaiba wouldn’t upset Jounouchi so much.” Ryou thought out loud as Honda left Jou to grab the trolley. “But why is he so upset over such a little remark anyway?” He continued, knowing full well Jou received worst from punks at school. “Jou’s life is complicated.” Yugi whispered eyes downcast. “He couldn’t actually afford to come along on this strip in the first place, but wouldn’t say why for the longest time.” Ryou shifted at the tone in Yugi’s voice, his eyes wide in confusion. “But Yugi, you said Jounouchi had a part-time job and surely he must have had work over the summer holidays.” “Yes, but that wasn’t where his money went to.” Yugi continued, increasingly upset by the second. “It’s not my place to say but there are a number of reasons. Mostly to do with his father and sister.” “Sister?” Ryou repeated unaware Jou had any siblings. “Ryou, do me a favour.” Yugi stared Ryou straight in the eye and held his hand tightly. “Don’t tell Jou I said anything and don’t bring it up, ok?” Ryou wasn’t sure why he should overlook Kaiba’s bullying towards Jou, but he could sense the seriousness of the situation and nodded his head. “Of course.” Yugi had known Jou since they went Domino High and had been best friends ever since as far as Ryou knew. Unbeknownst to him and everyone else, Jou picked on Yugi daily, almost in a bully fashion. Back then, Domino was not always the well-respected city it once was, schools gangs owned the streets, violence was common and if you didn’t stand up for yourself, then no one would. Jou and Honda were tough and could take care of themselves but Jou was always kind enough to help out younger kids back in middle school that were being bullied by the upper class men, even if they were part of his own gang. Once graduation finally arrived, Jou saw that nothing had changed since he first arrived, the weaker students would always be targeted by the stronger predators the moment they were separated from their protectors. Quickly realising nothing was gonna change, Jou decided to change his game plan for High school. Instead Jou set his sights on Yugi, the younger brother to the strong and confident, Yami Mutou. Jou vowed to make the short class man tougher and more of a man by pushing him just enough to push Jou right back. He never intended to get violent, just harmless mocking, and play keep away with his games. Just enough for Yugi to throw a punch and prove to Yugi and himself he didn’t need anyone to watch his back. Nothing change though, Yugi still took it, still kept quiet and remained as lonely and friendless as ever. It made Jou sick to see someone willing making themselves unhappy just to please others. He didn’t realise ‘till after why Yugi never thought back. Jou got himself and Honda into a tough situation and even though there was nothing Yugi could do, he still stood his ground and tried to protect them and after everything the two did to him, because in Yugi’s eyes, they were friends. “Jou?” Honda asked as he wheeled the trolley up to his best friend who in turn was glaring holes into the back of Kaiba’s skull “What?!” He growled viciously “You hung out with Ryou a few times right.” He mumbled, avoiding eye contact with the blonde. “Sure, he hangs out at the arcade with Yugi sometimes when he’s not studying. I don’t know much about him through, we’re not in the same class or anything.” Jou admitted, out of all of them Ryou was the most recent addition to their group, not counting Otogi, the American transfer student that study with them for one semester. “Yeah, well how close would you say he and Yugi are.” Honda coughed, cheeks red. “What you mean like best friends way? No way man! Yug’ knows very well who his best bud for life is.” Jou punched his chest proudly as he walked alongside Honda, troubles forgotten. “That’s not what I meant. They share a room and they see each other more then with you or me, even more so than Yami. Not to mention Yugi had no trouble convincing Ryou to go on holiday with us, even though we don’t him that well. You think something might be going on between them?” Jou nearly tripped over his own two feet at the assumption, but that may have been due to his untied shoelaces. “Are you kidding?! If Yugi was in a relationship I would know! Besides even if Yugi was into guys, he’d be blind to it with Anzu and all. Poor guy, she’s clearly into Yami.” Jou sighed unhappily. Honda had since gone quiet and Jou suddenly became wise to his real question. His blushed face, sweaty palms holding on tightly to the metal bar and stiff posture. Going over their conversation very carefully it suddenly became clear why Ryou and Honda never hung out much. “But this isn’t about Yugi is it.” Jou grinned mischievously, wrapping his arm around the brunette’s shoulder. “Someone has a crush on Ryou!” He sang loudly for may passbyers to hear wandering what the loud Japanese boys was saying. “Quiet you jerk, people are looking.” Honda growl, elbowing Jou in his unprotected rib “So, what? I could spouting it’s the end of the world and no one would be the wiser.” He chuckled. “Honda and Ryou sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-“ Jou never finished as a metal trolley was jabbed into his already bruised rib, pushing him to the ground. “Asshole!” Jou lunged and tackled the taller male just as they passed through the electric doors and into the hot, dry air of Egypt. “Too hot.” Jou panted retreating back under the air-conditioning. “Baby.” Honda chuckled, regaining his footing and control of the cart. “Guys, over hear!” Yami’s familiar voice called out to them. The rest of the gang was standing beside a greyish green jeep, built for off country road with plenty of room for six passengers and plenty of legroom to spare. Kaiba must have been the one the man handed the keys to as he was already getting himself familiar with the controls, whilst Yugi turned up the air-conditioning to full blast and was already overheating despite the cotton shorts, t-shirt and thin jacket he was wearing. Ryou however, was shuffling around his travel bag for the sun lotion, already applying it to his bare arms and exposed legs under his three-quarter combats. Honda blushed bright red, causing Jou to laugh uncontrollably at the very sight, quickly running off towards Yami before Honda had a chance to hit him again. “Awesome ride, looks like rich boy’s good from something after all.” Jou glared hatefully despite his smile, but Kaiba pretended not to hear as he warned Yugi to stop messing with the controls before he broke something. Kaiba wasn’t rich by proper standards, but out of all of them it was no secret that Kaiba’s family was well supported unlike many of them who were going into debt just being at university. “Would you stop lagging behind and hurry up and get the bags in the boot before we all melt to death.” The oldest growled, snatching the sun lotion off Ryou to apply to his own face. “Yeah, yeah, hold ya horses. It’s not like we’re in a hurry, we got all week to enjoy ourselves.” Jou mumbled as he lifted up one of the cases while Yami grabbed the second. “Yami where you sitting?” Jou asked, curiously as no one had decided on a sitting format before they got the vehicle. “I’ll be sitting next to Seto with the map, giving directions.” Yami heaved as he sat the heavy luggage into the boot. “I don’t need directions.” Kaiba glared behind his sunglasses, as Ryou and Yugi giggled behind their hands, knowing full well how Yami had a way of dealing with Seto’s stubbornness. “Then that means the rest of us are lumped in the back.” Jou thought out loud as he stroked his imaginary beard, an idea forming “Honda, who do you wanna sit next to?” The blonde smiled evilly, patiently waiting for an answer. Honda’s eyes instantly went to Ryou who was now leaning over the driver seat window, listening intently to whatever it was Kaiba was telling him on the map. The very idea of Ryou’s eyes sparkling and taking in every word Kaiba had to say like a lost puppy made Honda’s insides churn and he quickly turned his head away. “Doesn’t make a difference to me.” He mumbled, trying to act cool and mature, but the evident stain on his cheeks betrayed him. “Ok, then you don’t mind if Ryou and I sit in the back while you and Yugi take the middle.” Jou grinned, skipping over to Ryou to tell him the great news. “I just hope these cold nights aren’t true otherwise Ryou and I will have to huddle under the blankets together to keep warm!” Honda’s eyebrow twitched in hurry and Yami watched with bemused smirk, giving up on the luggage and instead twirling his golden locks as he focussed on watching the show unfold. “Ryou, I think I’m burning up already, would you put some lotion on my back.” Jou whined like a puppy as he turned his back to Ryou, his tank top and skin already glistening with sweat. “Of course, Jounouchi.” Ryou smiled happily as he took the tube back from Yugi and coated his hands in the white substance. “Don’t even think about it!” Honda cried, lunging after Jounouchi with enough force to send them tumbling to the ground. Practically strangling the poor blonde as he laid defencelessly under his taller compansion “Hey Yug’!” sit with me behind Yami, Honda and Ryou can sit in the back ok?” Jou’s smiled spread as he grinned at Honda’s bewildered face who’s grip sudden grew weak at the change of heart. “You too behave now and remember we promised Ryou’s father his lovely son would come back in the same way he left, so no funny business.” He waged his finger, scolding Honda like a teacher who just caught their student passing notes in class. Jou ducked just enough time to dodge Honda’s attack and leg it for the car door, jumping in and locking himself inside, teasing Honda from behind the glass. “Guys, I’m still covered in this stuff.” Rou whined, the lotion coating his fingers but it became clear he was all but forgotten. “Here.” Yami said suddenly standing next to the first year before Honda had time to speak. Yami lifted Ryou’s hands delicately and brought up his sticky coated digits and practically guided them down his cheeks, running them along his neck and finally his collarbone. Everyone’s eyes were suddenly focussed on Yami and Ryou, as the elder continued to guide the paler boy’s hands up and down his exposed skin, before practically linking his digits with Ryou’s own, running them up and down his exposed, tanned arms as the grease grew more faint until it firmly coated his skin flawlessly. Ryou seemed unaffected by this, but it was clear Kaiba did not find Yami’s teasing amusing and neither did Honda. Yugi however was upset for a completely different reason as he felt a sting in his chest as Jou glared hatefully at Ryou whose fingers were still intertwined with that of Yami’s. “If you want me to put some on you could have asked, or at least taken the majority off my fingers if you were going to do it yourself.” Ryou scolded and he wiped the excess off long his own exposed arms. Yami did not respond but smiled mischievously; patting Ryou on the head before walking past Jou and Honda who Ryou had just realised had stopped bickering and now were looking anywhere but directly at him or Yami. Tilting his head to the side Ryou couldn’t help but noticed Yugi was no longer interested in the car’s gadgets and sat quietly next to Kaiba, who in Ryou’s opinion didn’t look any different form how he usually looked. “What’s wrong with them?” Ryou titled his head cutely as Yugi, Honda and Jou turned away, clearly distressed by something that he did or say. “And to think you’re meant to be the smartest student of your year.” Kaiba snorted, becoming increasingly annoyed with the amount of ignorance in their circle of friends. Ryou wanted to ask Kaiba to elaborate, but the slam of the car boot signalled Honda was finished packing the bags and everyone made their way to their seats. Yugi actually climbed over the front seat to get to his beside Jou, while Honda opened the car door for Ryou, who smiled happily as he hopped in behind Yugi, which seemed to lift Honda’s spirits. Yami was the last to get in and went through his mental checklist before nodding to Kaiba that everything was ready. Kaiba stepped on the pedal and drove down the long road until reached the end of the airport and hit Egyptian soft sand. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that this was going to be the best holiday the teens had ever had and the most memorable time they spent together before Yami and Kaiba left University forever. As the six happily watched the sights fly by, instantly forgetting their problems, the mere thought that their perfect holiday would turn out for the worst farthest form their minds. As did the very suggestion that none of them would ever return alive… I love prologues, they really help you set the scene you’ve created for these characters, as well as establish their personalities, relationship with other characters and really just tell the viewer what they’re in for and why they should care about these six, especially once chapter 2 kicks >:D I really can’t wait and it’s very clear you’re not here to read their fun PG holiday in Egypt. No, you’re here for the good stuff!!! ^^ and I promise I will deliver; the gore of this story kicks in next chapter. For those of you that feel out of the loop of who has the hots for who, allow me to fill you in:- Honda likes Ryou Yugi likes Jounouchi Jounouchi likes Yami Yami and Kaiba may or may not be in a relationship. They’re complicated as friends and worse in this case. It’s hinted that they are in fact an item but there is no solid evidence. If they are then they’re keeping it a secret because I’m guessing it’s no one’s business. But make of it what you will. And as for Ryou? That’s a good question. Who does Ryou like? Assuming he has feelings for anyone in this group other than friendship. You’ll just have to sit and find out ;p
