Smint45: Thank you, thank you. A little different of a start from the other story. Glad to see you on board for this one, too. Enjoy!Relmara: Thank you, thank you! Would you believe I haven’t watched this in years? Except for the occasional rare episode playing on tv. Oh, I have always been known for my cliffhangers. I love to leave my readers guessing and wishing (and sometimes begging Ha Ha). I’m able to do more right now because of being on holiday break.Author’s Note: Enjoy the new chapter, everyone!CHAPTER TWOSeto glanced out the bullet-proofed window of his SUV. His step-father had liked to use the company limo, but Seto much preferred the shorter, bulkier vehicle. It allowed his security team, when present, to get him to safety more quickly. Only on special occasions did the limo come out.Plus the damn long thing made him an easier target for paparazzi and enemies. Seto smirked. His favorite vehicle was a sleek navy blue and dark gray Bugatti Veyron that sat in his garage at the mansion. He often drove that to school while Roland remained with his brother during the course of the day.Right now he was crossing the city to reach Domino General. He had been on his way home when he had gotten the call from Yami. He detested the former pharaoh, but he had been searching for the lost card for several months now. But why would the male be at the hospital? Despite the late hour, he had expected to have the other male tell him to meet at the Game Shop. The dumb pharaoh probably twisted an ankle stepping off a curb or something, Seto thought. He turned his attention back down to his PDA. He needed to finalize his schedule for tomorrow. The young CEO was pushing everything back so he could get a decent amount of sleep when he finally arrived at home. He had promised his brother he would get at least five hours of sleep each night; six on the weekends. Thinking of his brother, Seto glanced over his shoulder.Mokuba was sitting in the center but was laid out across all three seats fast asleep. The younger boy had spent all day beta testing some new games Kaiba Corp was developing. He had fallen asleep a couple of hours ago on the couch in Seto’s office. When they left the office, Seto had carried him down to the car.Seto turned his gaze back around and caught the time on the dashboard. 11:13 PM.“Mr. Kaiba, we should be there in five minutes. What is it you wish me to do?” Roland asked.Seto dropped his gaze back down to his PDA and moved things around with his stylus.“Stay in the car with Mokuba, Roland. I shouldn’t be long. I’ll be in and out in less than ten minutes,” Seto replied.Roland nodded silently as he pulled up to the front entrance of the hospital. Seto took off his seat belt and stepped out of the SUV while pocketing his PDA. After Seto disappeared inside, Roland pulled away to go park the vehicle.Seto walked through the quiet lobby and to the elevators. Someone was walking off it so he slipped right in and pressed the third floor button. The doors closed without a fuss and the elevator started moving. There was a directory in the elevator, indicating that the third floor was pediatrics. It didn’t surprise Seto in the least. If Yami was injured, he would be found on pediatrics. Youth were still considered pediatric until age eighteen. The elevator let out a quiet ding before the doors slid open and he stepped off. A quick glance at the sign posted told him where to go. He walked down the halls, looking up at each of the room numbers as he went past. At a t-intersection, Seto continued straight until he reached room 305.As he approached the doorway, Yami was stepping out and left the door cracked open behind him. A cursory glance over the tall tri-colored youth yielded no visible sight of injuries.“Where is it?” Seto demanded.Yami chuckled.“Wonderful as always to see you, too, cousin. I need to explain something first,” Yami told him.Seto glared.“I don’t want an explanation. I want my card back,” Seto growled angrily at him.Yami held up his hand when he sensed the taller male about to take a step towards him.“There are things you don’t know and need to know. Aren’t you curious as to why I asked you to come here?” Yami asked.Seto wouldn’t admit it out loud, but he was a tiny bit curious. Seeing as Yami wasn’t injured, another option was Yugi was in the room. If it was Yugi’s grandfather, they would have been in the geriatrics wing.“Is Yugi okay?”Both males nearly jumped out of their shoes. Their heads snapped over behind Seto where Mokuba was walking up to them with Roland behind him. He stopped beside his brother while looking at Yami. Seto put his arm around his shoulders and lowered his head.“Mokie, go back to the car. I’ll be down in a minute,” Seto told him.Mokuba ignored his brother’s suggestion and repeated his question. Yami smiled at him.“Yugi’s fine, Mokuba,” Yami said.Mokuba frowned, before glancing up at his brother and then back at Yami.“Then why are you here? Roland said you found Seto’s card,” Mokuba replied.Seto’s hand tightened into a fist before releasing. He hadn’t wanted to tell his younger brother, but he had had to make sure the young boy hadn’t taken it for whatever reason.Yami shook his head.“It wasn’t me that found it, Mokuba,” Yami told him. Both older males noticed Mokuba’s eyes dart to the doorway behind Yami. He pulled away from his brother and tried to step around Yami. Yami’s arm darted out to block Mokuba and Seto’s hand snagged him by the opposite shoulder. Roland stood in the background waiting for a time he would need to intervene.Yami jerked his shoulder free so he could drop down to a knee in front of Mokuba. Seto watched as Yami cupped his hand around Mokuba’s ear and leaned in to whisper something. Because the hand was cupped pointing away from him, Seto wasn’t able to hear what Yami was telling him.He watched as his brother’s small smile faded and his eyes widened. Mokuba turned his head to look at him.“Can…can I see him?” Mokuba asked.Yami nodded.“Try not to make too much noise, okay? He really needs to rest,” Yami answered.Mokuba slowly nodded. He stepped around Yami and pushed the door open just enough to disappear inside. Seto glanced over his shoulder to shoot Roland a look. The security stepped around both young men and disappeared inside the room after Mokuba.Yami was hauled abruptly to his feet when the fuming CEO snagged him by the arm and yanked him up. There was no twisting out of the man’s grip this time.“What did you tell my brother?” Seto demanded.Yami’s gaze narrowed.“The same thing I’m about to tell you. I didn’t find it. The person who did find it is severely hurt. He risked his life to protect what’s precious to you. I’m telling you to keep that in mind before you step in that room,” Yami cautioned him.Seto turned his gaze back to the cracked door. He released his tough grip on Yami’s arm and stepped around him. The brunette placed his hand on the door and pushed.First, he noticed the room was a private room with a police officer standing quietly in the corner with Roland. Then he noticed Yugi scrunched up in a chair fast asleep. His eyes flickered around to locate his brother. To his surprise, Mokuba had climbed on to the patient’s bed and was curled into their side. His body was jerking to indicate his silent sobbing. As if sensing his brother’s presence, Mokuba looked over his shoulder. Upon seeing his brother, Mokuba carefully rolled off the bed and ran to his brother. Seto knelt down and caught him in his arms. Tears were rolling down his face as Seto put a hand to his face. His brother’s words were all jumbled together and made no sense. Seto stood up cradling his brother in his arms. The younger boy wrapped his arms around his brother’s neck and muffled his crying into Seto’s shirt. Yami slipped into the room behind him and closed the door with a quiet click.Seto walked quietly to the bedside. When he saw who the patient was, he nearly dropped his own brother. He had seen bruises and other injuries on Wheeler, but never to this extent. His face was a mess. The blonde had a large cut on his bottom lip and his face bruised up the left side. There were multiple cuts ranging in size and severity on his right cheek and down his jaw to his neck. Joey had a line of stitches covering his right eyebrow. There was a thick bandaging covering his right ear. He had an oxygen tube helping him breathe through his nose.A hospital gown and a thick, hot white blanket covered his body, not allowing Seto to see any injuries below his chest. Joey’s left hand had bandages and a brace covering the middle of his palm to halfway to his elbow. There were bruises, which looked suspiciously like handprints, just above both elbows. His right hand seemed to be lying flat on his chest and under the blanket; an IV was attached to it.He wasn’t sure what angered him more. That Wheeler was injured, that Wheeler was the one who had found his lost card, or that it wasn’t him that had caused the injuries. Of course Seto had never gone that far in their fights and he never intended to. In his eye, it looked like the blonde had gone on a short trip through Hell and back.Seto looked up when he heard Yami scoot a chair up to the bed. Seto then realized that his brother had cried himself to sleep in his arms. He shifted him in his arms before sitting down in the chair. Seto shifted his brother who seemed to naturally curl up in his brother’s lap. He pulled his legs to his chest with one arm around them while the other hand held his shirt in a tight grip.Mokuba curled his head into his brother’s chest, letting out an occasional sniffle in his sleep. Yami sunk down into another chair beside them. Seto shot a glance at Roland. The officer was speaking quietly to the man about something.“What happened to Wheeler?”To Yami, it sounded more like a demand than a question.“Yugi and I were with Joey at his apartment before we left around six. During that time, I guess his father came home. Somehow, Joey found your card in his father’s position and took it and hid it. That…” Yami paused. “That man did this to Joey. All because he wouldn’t give it to him.”Now Seto’s mind was swimming with even more questions. How did Wheeler’s father get his hands on his card? Why did Wheeler steal it back from his father?
Why did Wheeler’s father beat him so severely over a silly (but sentimental to him) card?
Nothing seemed to be adding up. Then again nothing ever added up with Joey Wheeler in the equation. Then Yami slammed down something that threw all the math out the window.“Joey’s father has been abusing him. We think it’s been going on for more than a year.”Seto sat there stunned and speechless. The happy-go-lucky blonde who always had a smile on his face and a joke on the tip of his tongue…was abused. The same blonde who constantly challenged him and got into fights with him…was thrown around at home by his father. The bruises and cuts were not from fights with other guys…but from the hands that were supposed to protect him.Next to Motou and Yami, Wheeler was the last person he would have ever suspected of child abuse. Yami stood up and pulled the blanket down a little to reveal Joey’s hand covering the lost card. Speaking in a low tone, Yami spoke directly to Joey.“Joey? Joey, you can let go. Kaiba’s here now. You can give the card back,” Yami told him.Seto watched as Joey, in his unconscious state, took his uninjured hand away. His injured hand came up to gently pull the card down to the bed. His hand slid it towards them, almost as if sensing that’s where he was.Yami smiled as he took it from him and pulled the blanket back up.“Go back to sleep, Joey. Yugi and I aren’t going anywhere,” Yami whispered to him.Joey seemed to drift back to his more deepened state of sleep. Seto took the card from him when Yami held it out to him. Seto couldn’t suppress the small smile on his face. The picture was one of very few he owned. It was one of two he kept in his card locket. The one card currently in the locket was a recent photography of him and his brother, professionally done by his company’s head photographer. The card that was now back in his possession was much more precious. It was a photo of his parents, him and his brother. He was young and his baby brother only a year old. It was one of only three photos he had of the four of them together. Seto had thrown an absolute fit when he discovered a small break in his locket and the photo card missing.“What are his other injuries?” Seto asked, without looking up from the photo.“His ribs are bruised and the doctor says there’s some scarring on his back. We tried rolling him to his side to ease the pain on his back, but Joey keeps rolling back. His knee is bruised up and he’s going to be walking with a limp, but it’s not injured too badly.”At the clearing of his throat, Roland crossed the room to Seto. He carefully extracted Seto’s card locket from his pocket and replaced the photo card so that the two photos faced each other. At Seto’s shake of the head, he pocketed it and returned to the corner with the officer.Seto turned his head and saw there was a look of something in Yami’s eye.“That’s not the only reason you called me here. What is it?”/……/
The sun was starting to break over the horizon and light was filtering through the hospital windows. Joey’s room was still fairly dark, since Yugi had closed the curtains. Seto and a nurse were the only ones in the room. The nurse finished checking Joey’s IV and left without a word to the frustrated brunette.
The officer had left a moment ago to speak with his commanding officer. Yugi and Yami were downstairs in the cafeteria eating breakfast. With Seto’s permission, Mokuba had dragged Roland out the door an hour ago to go God knows where. He had kept it a secret from his big brother where he was going or what he was doing.Seto was currently leaning against the window with his arms crossed over his chest. He was staring across the hospital room at the unconscious blonde. After Yami said his final word, Seto had been unable to leave or even sleep.Wheeler was homeless. His father – as if he actually deserved that title – had indeed paid his bail and was already back at home. It obviously wasn’t safe for him to go there. None of his other friends knew about the abuse or could take him into their home. Yugi and Yami didn’t have enough space for Joey to rest properly. That left only one option. And it was an option he had stayed up all night mulling over. Seto felt he owed the blonde nothing. It was Wheeler Senior that had had his card; Joey had simply retrieved it from him. Plus, for all he knew, Wheeler could have been planning to keep it for himself. Last night didn’t provide him enough credible evidence to believe for a second that Wheeler had intended to give the card back to its rightful owner.Yami had seen it differently. He had told Seto that he did owe Joey. Because the former gang member had been busy trying to protect the card, it had left his body open to attack; which his monster of a father had taken advantage of.I shouldn’t have to let this mangy mutt into my house because the deluded pharaoh thinks I owe him some reward, Seto thought.A small stirring from the bed caused Seto to glance up. It seemed the blonde was waking up. Seto crossed the room and around the bed to his good side.Seto stood over the bedside and looked down at Joey. The blonde’s eyes were half-open and he slowly blinked. It looked like the blonde was still very out of it.Perfect.“Wheeler.”Joey’s eyes slowly shifted to the side to look up at him. There was a small flicker of recognition in those brown orbs. Joey’s braced hand came up to lightly touch the card locket now hanging down from around his neck.Seto’s hand pushed Joey’s hand away so he could pop it open. He turned the open locket towards Joey so he could see the retrieved card. Joey’s hand came up to touch the glass over the photo.“Can you talk?” Seto asked.Yami hadn’t mentioned any injuries that would have prevented the blonde from being able to speak. He would make the blonde talk, even if he had to get a pencil and paper.“…yes.”The voice had been nowhere near its usually loud volume, but Seto had still heard it. Seto noticed the blonde’s gaze remained on the framed picture. With a roll of his eyes, Seto clipped the necklace off and allowed the blonde to hold it. He leaned in close so he would be able to better hear the blonde.“How did you know this was mine?” Seto asked in a neutral tone.He knew from past experiences in the medical environment that it was better to speak in soft and neutral tones. Otherwise, the patient might be spooked or reluctant to speak.“Yami……told me…photo…missing. Dad…said it was…belong to……someone rich,” Joey murmured. His voice was slightly slurred, either by his accent or his weakened state.“And you figured out it was mine. Without even looking at it?” Seto commented.Joey’s head nodded ever so slowly.“How did your father get a hold of it?”This time, Joey shook his head. So his father hadn’t told him how the card had come to be in his possession. That would leave the question unanswered for now.Seto thought of walking away and locking the door. The two lovers, Yugi and Yami, would be upset he was questioning the blonde, when he should be allowing him to rest. But Seto wanted his answers and he was going to do everything in his power to get those answers.“Wheeler, why would you bother taking it from him? Yami could have told me and I would have retrieved it myself. Or you could have called the mansion and told Roland. He would have given me the message.”His tone changed to a low, disapproving tone. He only noticed the change in his voice when Joey blinked hard and turned his head slightly away. For a moment, Seto thought Wheeler was going to refuse to answer. But then Wheeler opened his mouth and proved him wrong.“Didn’t……didn’t want…burn. Dad…”Seto frowned.“What burning, Wheeler? You don’t have any burns,” Seto told him.Joey shook his head. Holding the locket in his injured hand, Joey lifted his other hand to tap twice on the picture with his middle finger. Suddenly, Seto realized what Joey was trying to tell him.He hadn’t wanted his father to burn the picture.Seto was fuming now. If he ever crossed paths with the senior, he would rip the man to shreds.“Burned……photos…Ren. Knew……had to…get. Trick…ed……him. ‘m…sorry,” Joey mumbled.Seto ignored the apology. The blonde had no right to apologize for something his father had tried to do. And he couldn’t believe that the man had burned photos of Joey’s sister; he had heard the blonde refer to his sister as “Ren” on several occasions.“Why did he hit you?”Seto reared back slightly when a small smile licked at the corner of Joey’s mouth. This time, his eyes shifted up to look at Seto.“ ‘m a…curse. Dad……says ‘m……a mutt.”Wheeler’s words hit him hard. Harder than he cared to admit even to himself. He would have never guessed that his favored term for Wheeler was also used by the man who abused him. He experienced a moment of guilt for bothering the blonde while he should be resting.Especially when Joey closed his eyes and a lone tear fell down his bruised cheek. As much as he disliked the blonde, Seto knew he couldn’t turn the younger man away in this great time of need. The blonde opened his eyes again, but they were misty-eyed. Seto could tell he was fighting off going back to sleep. He shook a little bit, as if he were in pain. When he saw another tear run down Wheeler’s cheek, he realized the youth was holding back a sob.Seto was at a complete lost. He had only ever offered comfort to his younger brother. He had never laid a gentle hand or word on the blonde. Hearing the blonde sniffle, Seto knew if he didn’t do something to calm him, it would block up the air tube. He reacted without thinking.Joey shuddered when a large hand clamped over his hand in the brace and laid it down on his stomach. However, he closed his eyes with a small sigh when another hand slid smoothly into his hair. Joey let out a small, inaudible whimper as the hand ran smoothly through his hair in a soothing manner. It started at his hairline, swept through the hair to the base of his skull, and pulled out to sweep back up to start the cycle again.“Go back to sleep, Wheeler.”Joey wanted to listen to the voice, but he wanted to talk more. He wanted to make sure Kaiba understood he had meant no harm. He had tried. He had tried so hard to protect the picture.“ ‘m sorry……sorry…didn’t……call.”Seto shook his head. Great. Now he had put that thought in the boy’s head. He leaned his head down to whisper in Joey’s ear while stilling the hand in the blonde’s hair.“You listen here, Wheeler. It is not your fault that man is a moron. You did a good thing. We’ll talk about this later. Now go back to sleep,” Seto ordered.Shifting a little so he could lie on his side without yanking out his IV, Joey slowly drifted off to sleep. Sitting partially on the bed, Seto continued running his hand through the soft golden tresses until he was sure the blonde had gone back to sleep. Even then, he only paused his hand over by the injured ear. He ran a light thumb over the bandaging. There was no going back now. Once they went through this door, it wasn’t going to be possible for him to consider Joey “Annoy-the-Hell-out-of-me” Wheeler as his rival. Seto smirked down at the sleeping blonde.“I suppose you as my house guest is an early Halloween gift.” Pause. Chuckle. “Never did like that holiday.”END OF CHAPTER TWOA/N: This is a note to all the readers/reviewers of any and all my fan fics. I won’t be updating for a few days due to the holiday season.
