Chapter 2: A New Enemy Emerges
"So if you are serious about wanting no secrets, Kaiba, will you answer a question honestly?" Yami asked.
Kaiba looked at Yami for a moment before answering. "What is it?"
"Just how long have you had feelings for me?" Yami asked as he scooted closer to Kaiba.
"It started when we first dueled. As much as I hated the innocent chivalry you showed when you defended your grandfather, there was a small part of me that found it attractive. After you won, and you banished whatever that was inside of me to the Shadow Realm, I played that time back in my mind again and again. And the more I did, and the more I obsessed over beating you in a duel, the more attractive you became. Not just the chivalry I hated initially, but you."
"Later at Battle City, I watched you throw yourself in-between an Egyptian God and your friends. I didn't believe in any of this nonsense involving the Shadow Realm or Ancient Egypt, but there was no denying the wounds on your back." Kaiba was referring to the duel between Marik and Mai Valentine at Battle City.
"It was the same selflessness that I was attracted to all that time ago, and from there I knew; you could be trusted not to take advantage of my weaknesses for some angle that you might be working. I could let my guard down around you and relax, if only I could somehow win you over. But I just couldn't trust what your response would be, and I was afraid of getting hurt."
"What makes you think I would have hurt you?" Yami asked.
"You wouldn't have intended it, but a response like 'I'm not into men' or, 'I don't care about you that way' would've hurt. It would've told me that I'll never be able to have someone that I can truly get close to, besides Mokuba."
"So rejection was what you were afraid of." Yami said, matter-of-factly.
"Yeah."
"I started having feelings for you at Duelist Kingdom, when we dueled outside of Pegasus's castle. I knew you weren't as cold and selfish as you pretend to be, even when we first dueled. I saw that when I banished the darkness from you. I got a small glimpse of your heart in that moment. I saw the fear and paranoia that you live with, and how loyal you are to those you care about. Then at Duelist Kingdom, when you put yourself in harm's way in order to get a chance to save your brother from Pegasus, my glimpse became a full display." Kaiba smiled at the recounting.
"Had I known then what I know now, I wouldn't have acted that way. I would've tried to work with you. Instead I ended up becoming a liability, and I endangered the possibility that anyone could've been saved."
"Actually, you helped us more than you realized. Your duel with Pegasus gave me a glimpse at his most powerful deck, and it gave me time to try to formulate a strategy." Yami said, trying to comfort Kaiba.
"That still doesn't excuse what I did." was Kaiba's curt reply.
"No, it doesn't. But that's in the past. It's irrelevant now. What matters now is what we can build." Yami said as he cuddled up to Kaiba.
"And speaking of building, just how do you want to handle this going forward?" Kaiba looked down at Yami, mildly annoyed.
"Didn't I answer that already?"
"Yes, you did, but there are some particulars we need to cover. Like, for instance, do you care if anyone knows about us? Or do you want this to be our dirty little secret?" Yami said, once again turning on his seductive charm.
"My only motivation in trying to keep this secret would be to protect you from people who might try to use you to get to me. I couldn't care less what the homophobes have to say. And if you were anyone else, I'd absolutely want this to be a secret because of all the enemies I have. In your case, however..." Kaiba flashed the most wicked smile Yami had ever seen. "I hope that they're stupid enough to try to come for you. You'll annihilate them before I even have the chance to act."
Yami chuckled in response. "It's nice to know you have such faith in my abilities."
"I plan on having a lot more than faith in you before the night is out." Kaiba growled as his lust was starting to rekindle.
Yami rose to him and replied in a growl of his own. "I look forward to it."
They spent the rest of the trip making out. Until they arrived at Kaiba Corp. headquarters. The limousines pulled into the special V.I.P area that Kaiba prepared before the Expo., and chauffeurs proceeded to open the doors for the passengers. Kaiba and Yami stepped out, and were greeted by Kaiba Corp. employees.
"Whoa. Man, I never get used to this place." Joey said as he looked around, observing the extravagant building known as Kaiba Corp. Headquarters.
"That's because this isn't an animal shelter, mutt." Kaiba's icy voice cut in from behind.
"Yugi, I swear I'm gonna kill him!!" Joey said, seething.
"Kaiba, would it kill you to be nice for once?" Yami asked. Kaiba looked at Yami, softened his gaze, then instructed his employees to escort Yugi and his friends to the V.I.P. lounge.
"I have some final preparations I have to make before the Expo officially starts. It won't be long. I'll catch up to you later." Kaiba said to Yami. As he turned to leave, Yami stopped him.
"Hey Kaiba. Aren't you forgetting something?"
"What's that?" Kaiba asked, only to have Yami wrap his arms around him and kiss him. Joey and everyone just stood there staring, like a deer in headlights.
"Good luck, Kaiba." Kaiba smiled. "Oh I won't need luck for this."
When Kaiba turned to leave, Yugi's friends all bumrushed him and proceeded to bombard him with questions. Yami then transformed into Yugi.
"Sorry about that, guys. I just wanting to see if I was right."
"So Kaiba really did want Yami here? Man. Who would've guessed Kaiba had it in him to have any sort of a crush." Tristian said.
"I know, right? Kaiba totally comes across as the kind of guy who'd just settle for buying a hooker for the night if he were going to do anything at all. Then to top it off, he's GAY!? Who could've seen this coming!? Although I should've suspected." said Mai in a conspiratorial tone.
Joey just laughed. "Why's that? 'Cause he shot you down every time you hit on him?"
"Well, why else would he turn down a beautiful woman like me!?" Mai exclaimed.
"Probably 'cause you come across as a golddigger." Joey quipped.
"What, so I like a man with money and I like him to spend it on me. That makes me a golddigger?" Mai asked indignantly.
"Yes." Joy, Tristian, and Tea replied in unison.
"Hmph! Well, I can't help it if I like the finer things in life." said Mai. The crew just laughed as they followed their escort.
In the V.I.P. lounge, Yugi and the crew couldn't help but be amazed at the decadent wealth and splendor they were surrounded by.
"Man, Kaiba sure does go all out." Joey exclaimed.
"Yeah. Leave it to Kaiba to throw together something like this." Tristian concurred.
"Hey, is that-" Before Mai could finish her question, Maximillion Pegasus walked over.
"Well, hello Yugi-boy." Pegasus said, greeting Yugi and his friends.
"Pegasus! You're here too!?" Joey asked in surprise.
"Well, it shouldn't surprise anyone that I'm here. After all, I am the CEO of Industrial Illusions, and my company partners with Kaiba Corp. on projects such as this frequently. Oh my, what a fine vintage!" Pegasus said as he took a sip of the glass of wine he picked up as he was walking over.
"I simply must know what vintage this is!"
"It's 'Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 1992', an American vintage that had a six liter bottle sell for $500,000 at auction just five years after its release." said Kaiba's icy voice as he walked up to check on Yugi and his friends.
"Kaiba! How are the preparations going?" Yugi asked.
"They're finished. The main attraction will start here soon." Kaiba replied.
"It's been far too long, Kaiba-boy." Pegasus said as he greeted Kaiba.
"Tsk. If you say so." said Kaiba, swiftly cutting off any attempt at casual conversation.
"By the way, Kaiba, what is the main attraction exactly?" Joey asked.
"It's a new line of kennels for mutts." was Kaiba's brutal reply. Before Joey could fly off the handle, Yugi cut him off at the pass.
"It's a new-and-improved duel disk. Kaiba Corp. partnered with Industrial Illusions to design and create it. And Kaiba will be demonstrating it today with a duel against an opponent the Kaiba Corp. Board of Directors handpicked."
"Wow. Any idea who it is?" Joey asked.
Kaiba, who received a stern look from Yugi, swallowed the pithy comment he was about to make and instead replied, "It's someone named 'Vex'. I have to get ready for the main attraction. I'll see you all there." Kaiba gave a courteous nod to the group, and then left.
"This may not be as easy for Kaiba as we might've thought." Pegasus mused aloud.
"What makes you say that? There's only two people in the world who've ever beaten Kaiba, and they're standing right here!" Mai exclaimed.
"There isn't much information on Vex, not factual information anyway, except that he duels in the underground scene. The rest is just rumors, and if even a fraction of them are true, Kaiba-boy may just be in for the duel of his life."
"What do you mean, Pegasus? This is Seto Kaiba we're talking about!" Tristian said. "Surely some underworld duelist can't pose a serious threat to him!"
"According to that logic, my good man, Yugi would never pose a threat to Kaiba because he's just a kid from a small town card shop. We of course know how that played out, now don't we? What's more surprising however is that the Kaiba Corp. Board of Directors would actually stoop so low as to consort with someone like Vex." Pegasus said.
"Is Vex really that bad?" Yugi asked. Pegasus looked at Yugi knowingly.
"Try to imagine every power hungry psychopath that you've ever encountered, Yugi-boy. Kaiba himself years back, young Ryou's Yami, Marik, myself." Pegasus gave a slight smile at mentioning his own name.
"All of us at our worst couldn't compare to Vex, and thats if even a fraction of the rumors I've heard are true." Yugi and the others shuddered at the picture Pegasus was painting of this duelist known as Vex.
"Your attention, please! The Kaiba Corporation Duel Disk Expo will begin momentarily. Please proceed to the auditorium in an orderly fashion." A voice over an intercom said to the crowd. After everyone entered the auditorium and had taken their seats, Kaiba entered the stage and proceeded to elaborate on all the features of the newest duel disk. Some of those included higher definition holographics, easier deck loading, and even social media features that allowed you to record your duels in real time and share them with your friends. Once Kaiba had completed his presentation, which was met with roaring applause from the audience, Kaiba walked to the right-hand side of the stage while an emcee proceeded to guide the audience into the final part of the Expo; the duel between Kaiba and Vex. After Vex's introduction, he walked up on stage. He didn't appear unique in the least. Average height, male, lithe, dark hair, pale skin, and he didn't appear to be any older or younger than Kaiba or Yugi.
"So you're Vex. Well, you're certainly not much to look at." Kaiba said jeeringly.
"Neither are you, darlin'." Vex replied in a drawl that oozed confidence. Kaiba started getting annoyed.
"Let's see if you're duelist enough to back up that confidence, or if it's nothing but bluster." Kaiba said.
"Don't worry about that, darlin'. You just worry about lasting as long as possible, before I put you down in front of your adoring public." Kaiba loaded his deck into his duel disk.
"Just you try." Kaiba said, curtly.
"Heh. I'm going to enjoy this." Vex said, his voice seething with bloodlust. He loaded his deck into his duel disk.
Vex: 4000 LP Kaiba: 4000 LP
DUEL!!
"My move" Kaiba said after drawing. 'All right. Let's see how he deals with this.'
"I summon Vorse Raider in attack mode (Dark Beast-Warrior, Level 4,1900ATK/1200DEF). I'll place two cards face down and end my turn."
"Now darlin', I believe we're supposed to entertain our audience. Why do you have to play so boring? I draw! Hmm. All right then. First, I play the spell card Harpie's Feather Duster to destroy all of your spell and trap cards." The card quickly came to life and blew away both of Kaiba's facedowns.
"Next, I activate the effect of a monster in my hand called Dictator of D. With this effect, I send one Blue-Eyes White Dragon from my hand or deck to the graveyard in order to special summon him to the field. (Dark, Spellcaster, Level 4, 1200)"
Kaiba was stunned. Someone else had a Blue-Eyes White Dragon!? There were only supposed to be four in the entire world, three of which he has himself. The other one was in the possession of Yugi's grandfather.
"Don't look so surprised, darlin'. Did you really that you were the only one who could use a Blue-Eyes White Dragon? Oh but wait! It gets better. Next, I activate another one of Dictator of D.'s special effects. By discarding either a Blue-Eyes White Dragon or a card that specifically mentions it, I can special summon a Blue-Eyes monster from my graveyard. So I'll discard The White Stone of Legend from my hand to special summon that Blue-Eyes White Dragon that I sent to my graveyard before. (Light, Dragon, Level 8, 3000ATK/2500DEF). And now, the effect of The White Stone of Legend activates. When it is sent to my graveyard from anywhere, I can add one Blue-Eyes White Dragon from my deck to my hand. Next, I'll normal summon Maiden with Eyes of Blue in attack mode. (Light, Spellcaster, Level 1, 0ATK/0DEF)."
"Now my Blue-Eyes White Dragon, destroy his Vorse Raider! (Kaiba: 2900LP). Next up is my Dictator of D. Attack him directly! (Kaiba: 1700LP)." Kaiba was reeling. Not since his duel with Pegasus back at Duelist Kingdom had he ever been this helpless.
"Are you starting to feel it, Kaiba? The sweet despair of helplessness? If it's any consolation to you, I'm enjoying it immensely! HAHAHAHA!!" Vex said.
"Are you done yet, Vex!? Or are you going to continue boring the audience with this sadomasochistic drivel!?" Kaiba said.
"My my. Getting a little touchy aren't we, darlin'? Don't worry,. I'm almost done, and so are you!" Vex said.
"Next, I play the spell card Bingo Machine, Go!!! Now I choose three cards from my deck that are either Blue-Eyes monsters, or are spell or trap cards that specifically mention either Blue-Eyes White Dragon or Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon. Then you choose one at random to add to my hand. The rest are shuffled back into my deck." After Kaiba chose the card, the others were shuffled into the deck.
"That does it for me, darlin'. Your turn." Vex said with a sneer.
"Oh man... Kaiba's getting his rear end kicked out there!" Joey said, shocked as everyone else in the audience.
"Hang in there, Kaiba! Don't give up!" Tristian yelled.
"Yeah, take this lowlife down!" Mai chimed in. Yugi was notably silent.
"Tsk! I draw! Perfect! I activate the spell card Dark Hole. Now all monsters on the field are destroyed." Dark Hole proceeded to suck all monsters on the field into a black hole.
"Next, I'll lay a monster face-down in defense, and end my turn." Kaiba said.
"YEAH!! Way to go, Kaiba!!" Tristian yelled.
"No kidding! I never thought I'd be rooting for Kaiba, but I definitely don't want him losing to this creep!" Joey said.
"Kaiba isn't out of danger yet. If anything, looking at Vex, I'd say we haven't seen anything close to what he's capable of." Yugi said, musing aloud. Vex drew his card, and then proceeded to laugh the most psychotic laugh that anyone had ever heard.
"Oh darlin'! You were fun while you lasted, but now it's time to put you out of your misery!! I activate the ritual spell Chaos Form! Now by sending this Blue-Eyes White Dragon in my hand to the graveyard, I can ritual summon Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon!! (Dark, Dragon, Level 8, 4000ATK/0DEF). Now darlin', there's something you should know about this beast. For starters, you can't target him with any card effects, and he can't be destroyed by any card effects my opponents control. Also, if he attacks a monster that's in defense, and his attack is higher than that monster's defense, he inflicts double the piercing damage!!"
"WHAT!!?" Kaiba said in disbelief.
"Oh man, Kaiba's toast!" Joey said.
"No! Kaiba!!" Mai said.
"Now my dragon, END THIS!!! Attack his face-down monster!!" The monster was a Giant Germ (Dark, Fiend, Level 2, 1000ATK/100DEF). Piercing damage would be 3900 normally, but because of Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon's double piercing effect, the damage was 7800, more than enough to finish Kaiba off.
Kaiba fell to his knees, completely devastated. The auditorium was dead silent in utter disbelief that one of the best duelists in the world just got destroyed inside of three turns. Vex walked towards Kaiba, laughing that same laugh. When he stood in front of Kaiba, his voice was dripping with a venom that would've made denizens of the Shadow Realm shudder.
"You're supposed to be one of the best duelists in the world? Pathetic!" Vex leaned down and yanked Kaiba by his hair so that he was face-to-face with him.
"Darlin', you're lucky that I don't have more time with you."
"That's enough!" Vex turned around to see Yugi standing behind him on stage.
"My my. Everyone's so touchy around here. It makes a man wonder what they're putting in the water." Vex said. Suddenly the symbol for the Millennium Items started to glow on Yugi's forehead.
"Let Kaiba go. Now." Yugi, who had shifted to Yami, said in a voice filled with the potential for violence that the words themselves didn't show. Vex stared for a moment, then unceremoniously tossed Kaiba aside.
"You shouldn't go butting into other people's business, boy. One day, it'll get you hurt." Vex said, menacingly.
"Now leave. You've done what you came to do." Yami said.
"Oh have I, now? Boy, you don't have a clue. But don't worry. I'll be seeing you again real soon." Vex gave a condescending wave as he left the stage. Yami ran over to check on Kaiba. "
Kaiba, are you ok?" Yami asked as he tried to help Kaiba up.
"Don't touch me!!" Kaiba said, forcefully knocking Yami's hand back as he stood up and stormed off stage. The auditorium was still in shock at the scene that had just transpired before their very eyes.
"Oh man. What did we just watch!?"
"That was brutal!"
"Yeah, even Yugi and Pegasus couldn't beat Kaiba this badly."
"Kaiba's finished!"
"Kaiba might even lose his position as CEO of Kaiba Corp. over this!" the crowd began to mutter when they did finally speak.
Yami surveyed the crowd, heard the noise, and just knew that sooner or later that he was going to have to confront this monster who just annihilated the world's second or third best duelist like it was nothing.
But first, he needed to check on Kaiba.
