Chapter Twenty-one
Seto holds
Katsuya tighter into his embrace.
Katsuya
closes his eyes and relaxes. “You’re warm.”
“Are you
getting hot?” asks Seto softly.
“No… I just
expected you to be cold. You act so cold, snapping at people for the smallest
things… I just expected your body to be as cold as your heart seems to be, but
you’re warm,” says Katsuya smiling, “You’re comfortably warm.”
“Would you
feel better if I held you while you slept?” whispers Seto.
“Yes…
please, will you?”
“Of
course.”
Katsuya
pushes Seto down, and they quickly get themselves situated so that they both
lie on the couch together. Katsuya sets his blond head on Seto’s chest and
takes a deep breath. “Thank you, for everything.”
“Don’t… I’m
tired too.” Seto closes his eyes and holds onto Katsuya as they both fall
asleep again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~Seto’s~Dream~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kaiba looks at Jou and
their eyes meet.
“Is
something wrong, Seto?” asks Jou, “Huh, Master?”
“I think
there might be,” says Kaiba, “I… There’s something that I want, and normally
when I want something, I take it.”
“So why
don’t you this time?” asks Jou.
“This
something has to be given. I can’t take it,” says Kaiba.
“Tell me
what it is,” says Jou, “And if it is something I can give, then I gladly will.”
“I don’t
know if you could give it.”
“Then
tell me what it is and let me decide.”
“Are you
ready maybe,” sings Kaiba, “Are you willing to run? Are you ready to let
yourself drown? Are you holding your breath? Are you ready or not?”
Jou’s
jaw drops as he listens to Kaiba’s beautiful voice.
“Are you
ready maybe? Do you long to confess? Do you feel that you’re already known? Are
you sure of yourself? Would you lie if you’re not?” sings Kaiba, “You tire me
out. Don’t wanna let that happen. A secret screamed so loud. Why did you let
that happen?”
Jou
steps towards Kaiba and places his hand on the brunet’s shoulder.
“So put
your arms around me… You let me believe that you are someone else,” sings Kaiba
as a tear escapes his pure blue eyes and slides down his cheek.
Jou
quickly brushes the tear aside and pulls Kaiba into a warm embrace.
“Cause
only time can take you… so let me believe that I am someone else.” Kaiba rests
his head on Jou’s shoulder. “Maybe, are you ready to break. Do you think that I
push you too far? Would you open yourself? Are you reckless or not?”
“Seto,”
whispers Jou pulling Kaiba even tighter into his embrace.
“You
tire me out. Don’t wanna let that happen,” sings Kaiba wrapping his arms around
Jou, “A secret screamed so loud. Why did you let that happen? So put your arms
around me. You let me believe that you are someone else. Cause only time can
take you. So let me believe that I am somewhere else. Let me believe that I am
somewhere else.”
For a
long moment, Jou and Kaiba stand in each other’s arms with Kaiba’s head resting
against Jou’s shoulder.
“So put
your arms around me… So put your arms around me,” sings Kaiba, “Make me
believe… Take me, take me, somewhere… somewhere. Let me believe. Cause only time
can take you. So stop.”
“That
was beautiful, Seto,” whispers Jou in awe, “I can’t believe you can sing like
that. It was so beautiful. What was all that about?”
“That
was about me needing to be held in your arms, Katsuya,” whispers Kaiba, “So I
told you the only way I truly knew how. I sang a song.”
“What
song was it?”
“Put
Your Arms Around Me… it’s sung by Texas,” whispers Kaiba as a few more
tears fall from his eyes.
“Seto…
next time you need held… when you need to feel loved, all you need to do is
ask, although I really did enjoy this method. It was so beautiful,” says Jou.
Seto wakes
up to the sound of quiet chuckles coming from the doorway. He cocks his head to
the side to look at his younger brother. “What?”
“You two
make a cute couple! How long have you been dating?” asks Mokuba.
“We’re not.
He just had a nightmare, and I was tired so we went to sleep together,” says
Seto.
“Oh.”
Mokuba slouches where he stands.
“Is it time
for dinner?” asks Seto.
“No. I was
just looking for Jou so he could play with me a little before dinner,” says
Mokuba, “But he does look comfortable, so I don’t think we should bother him.”
Seto nods.
“Have a
nice nap,” says Mokuba ducking out of the room again.
Seto
brushes a strand of blond hair away from Katsuya’s face and looks at the soft
features that movement revealed. He smiles before returning to sleep even
though he knows another dream of the golden haired beauty will be the result.
~~~~~~~~~~~~Seto’s~Dream~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jou rests his head on
Kaiba’s shoulder and yawns. “I’m tired.”
“You’re
always tired, Katsuya,” says Kaiba wrapping one arm around Jou’s back and
keeping his other hand holding his book open.
“It’s
not my fault, Seto,” says Jou, “I haven’t gotten much rest since moving in with
you and Mokuba. He always wants to play with me! I swear. I’d need a sugar I.V.
to keep up with that kid!”
Kaiba
chuckles. “I feel that way sometimes too.”
“Are you
still reading Two Towers?” asks Jou.
“No… I
just started Return of the King,” says Kaiba.
“Nice…”
“Would
you like to go to sleep?” asks Kaiba.
“I would
like a lot of things at the moment,” says Jou.
Kaiba
passes his book to Jou and pulls the blond into his lap so that Jou’s head
rests against his chest and shoulder.
Jou
cuddles up to Kaiba’s chest and passes the book back to him.
Kaiba
continues to read as Jou nestles up to him for a quick nap.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Katsuya
shakes Seto awake. “Hey, it’s dinner time.”
Seto yawns.
“How did you sleep?”
“Like the
dead,” says Katsuya helping Seto to his feet. “What about you?”
“It wasn’t
all that bad,” says Seto honestly, “I could get used to sleeping like that if I
had to.”
“Oh? You
want to sleep with me lying on top of you all the time?” asks Katsuya blushing
at his own words as he walks with Seto to the dining room.
Seto
blushes a deep red. “That isn’t what I meant!”
Katsuya
laughs. “I know!”
“You are
incorrigible!” exclaims Seto taking his seat and keeping his eyes far from the
image of the smaller teenager.
Katsuya
laughs even harder as he takes his seat.
Mokuba, who
already sits at the table, smiles behind his drinking glass at the two older
boys. “You two bicker like an old married couple!”
“What?”
gasps Katsuya with wide eyes.
Seto’s eyes
also widen for a moment before he hides his surprise behind a mask of
indifference. “Why do you say that?”
“Just look
at you!” exclaims Mokuba setting his glass down, “If I didn’t know any better
from the way you two act around each other, I would say that you’re in love!”
He lowers his eyes to his plate as he mumbles, “I think it might be good for
you both to have someone to love.”
Seto opens
his mouth to speak, but after a second, when no words come out, he closes his
mouth again.
The cook brings
in the dishes of food and sets them down on the table so the small family can
serve themselves. Then she leaves quietly to go about the rest of her work.
“I don’t
love Jou!” exclaims Seto staring at his empty plate as Katsuya starts to dish
up some food for himself.
Katsuya
sets the spoon back into the mashed potatoes and pushes the bowl towards Mokuba
with a despondent look on his face.
Mokuba sees
the look on Katsuya’s face and looks towards Seto only to see his older brother
completely missing the other’s despair. He glares at his brother before turning
back to Katsuya. “Would you like some chicken, Jou? You can have the biggest
breast!”
“No thanks,
Mokuba. I’m not very hungry,” says Katsuya putting on a happy smile, “I’ll just
eat this.”
Seto looks
up at Katsuya and sees the spoonful of mashed potatoes on his plate. His eyes
narrow. “You can’t be serious about only eating that! You’ll starve to death if
you don’t eat more!”
Katsuya
glares at Seto. “What do you care? You hate me, so why shouldn’t I die?”
“Jou! You
know I don’t hate you! Honestly! How many times have we had this conversation?”
replies Seto quickly, “Now eat!”
“I think
I’ve just lost my appetite,” says Katsuya standing up, “Enjoy your dinner,
Mokuba!” He turns and hurries from the dining room as fast as his feet will
take him.
Seto sighs.
“Obstinate mutt!”
Mokuba
glares at Seto. “Go after him! This is all your fault!”
“My fault?”
“Yes! Are
you blind or what, Seto? Jou, he’s…”
“He’s
what?” presses Seto.
“And I
thought you were supposed to be a genius!” snaps Mokuba angrily. He hits the
table with his small fist.
“What?”
“He’s
developing feelings for you,” whispers Mokuba sadly, “And you still hate him,
don’t you?”
Seto’s eyes
widen in shock. “I don’t hate him! I don’t!”
“But you
don’t feel anything for him either,” says Mokuba standing up, “I’m not very
hungry. I’m going to go take my bath and go to bed.”
“Does he
really have feelings for me?” asks Seto, “Could this be what the dreams I’ve
been having with him really mean?”
Mokuba
doesn’t say a word as he starts walking to the door.
“Mokuba…
come back and eat. I’ll go talk to Jou and get him to come eat as well,” says
Seto standing.
Mokuba
smiles back at Seto. “Okay, big brother.”
Seto heads
out of the dining room and begins his search of the house, surprisingly enough
to find Katsuya in the library behind a large stack of books. “Jou, I’m sorry.”
“Sorry?”
asks Katsuya sarcastically, “What for?”
“For what I
said,” says Seto, “I don’t hate you. I don’t love you, but I certainly don’t
hate you. I like you… Perhaps my feelings for you could one day grow into love.
But for right now they are merely like.”
“Why would
you need to apologize for that? It’s not like I want you to love me!” exclaims
Katsuya hiding behind the pages of a book.
“I think
you do…” Seto takes a deep breath and continues rapidly. “I think you want
someone to love you. You don’t want anyone to hate you, and I think that’s why
it hurt you when I said I didn’t love you. I’m sorry for that. Will you come have
dinner with me?”
Katsuya
lowers his book. He takes a deep breath and stands. He nods.
Seto smiles
and holds out his hand for Katsuya.
Katsuya
reaches out hesitantly and takes Seto’s hand. He allows the taller boy to lead
him back to the dining room where they have dinner with Mokuba in comfortable
silence.
Seto climbs
into bed later that night and thoughts of a blond puppy fill his head even
before he starts to drift to sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~Seto’s~Dream~~~~~~~~~~~~
“What do you want,
moneybags?” asks Jou glaring at Kaiba angrily.
“I
suppose nothing, mutt. I just thought…”
“That’s
your problem! You think too much!” exclaims Jou swinging his fist and punching
the wall beside Kaiba.
“Lousy
aim!” exclaims Kaiba.
“Who
said I missed?”
Kaiba
raises an eyebrow. “You meant to break your fist?”
Jou
shakes his hand and looks at it, seeing the blood and feeling the pain that
usually means something’s not quite right. “Heh… wouldn’t be the first time…”
“What is
up with you today?” asks Kaiba.
“I don’t
know, Seto.” Jou turns away from Kaiba. “I just… things aren’t going right for
me at the moment. I don’t know what is going on anymore.”
“Would
you like to talk about it, Katsuya?” Kaiba walks around Jou so that he’s facing
the blond again.
“I got
into a fight with my old gang today. It was worse than the fights we normally
have… Hell, they normally leave me alone now that I’m out,” says Jou hanging
his head, “But today… they really let me have it. They caught me by myself. I’m
surprised that they didn’t leave any visible marks on me… maybe they’re all
covered by my clothes. I’ll have to check that out when I get home. But they
really worked me over.”
“Are you
all right?” Kaiba’s voice quivers slightly with concern.
“Yeah… I
think so,” says Jou, “But I am getting really tired. I think I might skip the
rest of the classes for today and go home to sleep. You don’t have a problem
with that, do you, Seto?”
“Not at
all, Katsuya. If you really need the extra rest,” says Kaiba.
Jou nods
and his eyes roll back into his head. His body starts to fall.
Kaiba’s
eyes widen as he grabs Jou and lifts him into his arms. “Katsuya! Katsuya!”
Kaiba
rushes Jou into the school and straight to the nurse’s office. “Help!”
The
nurse quickly examines Jou. “Oh, dear! He has a concussion. Have you two been
fighting again?”
“No! He
got into a gang fight this morning!” exclaims Kaiba, “I didn’t do this!”
“Well…
he should be fine,” says the nurse.
“I’ll
have my private doctor come by to check him out,” says Kaiba whipping out his
cell phone quickly and hitting the speed dial.
“If you
insist,” says the nurse turning back to her other duties.
Kaiba
growls at her unprofessional mannerism and talks to his doctor.

Seto snaps
awake and breathes deeply. He places a hand over his heart, and a single tear
rolls down his cheek. “He can never know how I truly feel about him… Never…
never… never… He would hate me if he knew… I don’t want him to hate me. I
couldn’t live with myself if the only person I … hated me…”
