Chapter Twenty-two
~~~~~~~~~~~~Seto’s~Dream~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jou steps up to Kaiba and
glares at him. “You wanted to see me?”
“Yes, as
a matter of fact, I did, Katsuya,” says Kaiba as he leans against the wall and
glares at the setting sun on the horizon.
“Why,
Seto?” asks Jou leaning against the wall beside Kaiba.
“Look
around you, Katsuya. What do you see?” asks Kaiba.
Jou
looks around. “The garden… the patio… the sunset…”
“And
don’t forget the moon,” says Kaiba, “and Venus.”
“Venus?”
Kaiba
points to the star, fairly low on the horizon but not within the sun’s blinding
rays.
Jou
slides closer to Kaiba and looks down the arm until he finds the star. “So
that’s Venus, huh? It looks so far away.”
“It is,
but then again, it’s not,” says Kaiba.
“So…
what came first, Mr. Smarty-pants?”
Kaiba
raises an eyebrow at the nickname and scowls.
“Venus
the planet, or Venus the Goddess?” asks Jou finishing his previous question.
“I don’t
remember which was actually first, but I do believe that the planets were named
after the divinity,” says Kaiba, “which makes the Gods coming first.”
Jou
nods. “Makes sense.”
Kaiba
smiles at Jou and wraps his arm around the other boy’s waist. He pulls Jou
closer to him.
Jou
rests his head on Kaiba’s shoulder.
“It’s so
peaceful out here,” says Kaiba with a gentle sigh. “I used to come out here
with Mokuba all the time, but lately neither of us have had the time.”
“So what
did you two do when you came out here? Just stare at the sun until your retinas
burned out?”
“No!
We’d wait for the stars to come out and we’d tell stories. I used to tell him
what little I could remember about our real parents. I only remember their
faces now. I don’t remember anything else,” says Kaiba, “It was so long ago
that it all happened.”
“Do you
want to talk about it?”
“Not if
I don’t have to.”
“Did you
ever talk Greek myths? I mean, so much about the night sky is Greek related, so
maybe…” Jou wraps his arms around Kaiba.
“No. I
never studied the myths, only the history,” says Kaiba.
Jou
looks up at Kaiba with a smirk.
“I do
not like that look, Katsuya!”
“Let me
tell you a few things about Greek mythology,” says Jou leaning up to whisper
into Kaiba’s ear. “A long time ago, before the stars had shapes, the Gods
walked the earth…”
Kaiba
closes his eyes and listens to Jou’s melodious voice.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I wanted
to see you, Katsuya… very much,” whispers Seto in his sleep. He rolls over and
feels a lump in his bed, which causes his mind to rush back from his
dream-state, and he opens his eyes.
A ruffled
blond head rests on the pillow next to Seto’s, with a pair of pale eyelids
covering the irises to conceal their color. A quiet whimper escapes the pink
lips.
Seto’s eyes
widen and he wraps his arms around Katsuya, pulling him slightly closer to
comfort him. He whispers, “It’s okay, Jou. It’s okay. Nothing will hurt you.”
Katsuya
yelps loudly and starts to quiver, but he remains asleep.
Seto pulls
Katsuya up tight against his body and inhales the sensuous scent of cherry
blossoms stemming from the golden tresses. “Jou… Katsuya, it’s me, Seto…”
Katsuya
stops shaking and snuggles up to Seto. He whimpers, “Seto…”
“Yes, Katsuya,”
whispers Seto taking a deep breath of the cherry blossoms and squeezing Katsuya
in his arms. “I like this… having you in my arms like this.”
Katsuya
gives Seto a small smile in his sleep.
Seto smiles
and closes his eyes. He doesn’t relinquish his hold on Katsuya even as he falls
into a deep sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~Seto’s~Dream~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jou smirks at Kaiba. “Yeah…
your newest duel disc sucks! It doesn’t even work!”
“Say
that again, mutt!” exclaims Kaiba scowling at Jou.
“Your
duel disc sucks, rich prick!” exclaims Jou. “It doesn’t even work! There are
supposed to be holograms… or have you forgotten that?”
Kaiba
meets Jou’s gaze and holds it fiercely. “You are pathetic! Or are you just too
stupid to remember how to work the disc?”
Jou
growls at Kaiba.
“Acting
like a dog again?” Kaiba smirks.
Jou
leaps at Kaiba and knocks them both to the floor where they wrestle each other
for dominance until Jou manages to find himself in a strangle hold. “Let me go,
Seto!”
“Never,
Katsuya!” exclaims Kaiba.
Jou rubs
his fingers along Kaiba’s ribcage.
Kaiba
releases Jou quickly as he bursts out into a fit of laughter. He tries to shove
Jou away.
Jou
stops tickling Kaiba and lies on his side facing the brunet. He smiles.
“Ticklish much?”
“Not at
all,” says Kaiba with a smile as he calms his laughter and lies on his side to
face the blond.
“Really?”
asks Jou raising an eyebrow, “Should I try again?” He reaches his hand towards
Kaiba’s ribs.
Kaiba
catches Jou’s hand. “Don’t you dare!”
“Seto…”
“Katsuya?”
“Why do
you think I’m here? Like this?” asks Jou sliding closer to Kaiba.
Kaiba
sighs. “I don’t know. I’m sorry, Katsuya, but I have no idea what these dreams
mean. All the help that your real self has been giving me is only confusing me
more. They all seem to have so many different key points in them, and it
doesn’t make sense. What is the point of them? They have to be leading down
some ultimate path, but I can’t see it! I can’t see where it’s going and it’s
driving me crazy! I want to know! I want to know where these dreams are going!”
Jou
gently places his hand on Kaiba’s cheek. “You aren’t crazy.”
Kaiba
reaches up slowly and places his hand on Jou’s cheek.
Jou
closes his eyes for a moment before opening them again to look at Kaiba. He
smiles.
Kaiba
smiles as he stares into Jou’s eyes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seto wakes
up abruptly with an elbow to his ribs. “Oof!”
“Oh, gods,
Kaiba! I’m so sorry!” exclaims Katsuya pushing the brunet’s arms off his body
and rolling himself away from Seto so he can sit upright on the other side of
the bed.
Seto snarls
at Katsuya as he rubs his ribcage. “Stupid mutt! What the hell was that for?”
“I’m so
sorry! I’m sorry!” exclaims Katsuya hanging his head, “But you were holding me
so tight! I couldn’t move!”
“And you
needed to move so badly?”
Katsuya
blushes. “Right! Bathroom?”
Seto shakes
his head and sighs. He points to the door beside his dresser.
Katsuya
jumps off the bed and rushes into the bathroom.
Seto looks
towards his clock and sighs again.
Katsuya
emerges from the bathroom blushing a brilliant red.
“Feeling
better?” asks Seto.
“Yes. Much
better,” says Katsuya heading back over to the bed, “Listen, Kaiba. I’m really
sorry about hitting you.”
“Shut up
and get back in bed!” exclaims Seto closing his eyes.
Katsuya
climbs back into the bed and slides close to Seto. “Good night, Kaiba.”
“Good
night, Jou,” says Seto grabbing Katsuya by the waist and pulling him up taut
against his body, “In the morning, you can explain to me why you had to crawl
into my bed.”
“O-okay,”
says Katsuya.
“A
nightmare about your father?” whispers Seto.
“Not about
him,” whispers Katsuya closing his eyes.
“Then
what?” whispers Seto.
“Morning.”
Katsuya yawns and snuggles into Seto’s arms.
Seto
relaxes and lets sleep claim him as the blond boy falls asleep in the safety of
his arms.
* * *
Seto wakes
up with a yawn and looks at Katsuya.
Katsuya
smiles shyly. “Good morning, Kaiba.”
Seto
releases his death grip on the blond. He blushes as he rolls onto his back and
crosses his arms over his chest. “Morning, mutt.”
Katsuya
sits up and stretches his long limbs.
“How long
were you watching me sleep?” asks Seto.
“Not long…
just about twenty minutes I think,” says Katsuya.
Seto sits
up and grabs Katsuya’s hand from the bed. His blue eyes catch the gaze of the
honey-brown orbs. “What was your dream about?”
“…” Katsuya
lowers his gaze. He takes a deep breath. “It was about my mom. Ever since she
took Shizuka away from me, I’ve had this reoccurring dream where I see her
taking things away from me. She takes away the most important things in my
life. My dream always starts with her taking away Shizuka, but then she comes
back for more… my friends, my Duel Monsters deck, my…”
“Your
what?” asks Seto caressing Katsuya’s hand.
“Recently,
she’s also been taking away the guy I want to be my boyfriend,” says Katsuya
turning away from Seto.
Seto pulls
Katsuya up to his chest again and holds him there. “She can’t hurt you. No one
can hurt you.”
“She can…
She already has…”
“I won’t
let her anymore…”
“Why? Why
would you protect me, Kaiba?” asks Katsuya shoving himself away from Seto and
climbing from the bed, “Why would it even matter to you? I’m just a filthy mutt
in your eyes! Why wouldn’t you let her and my father hurt me, beat me… rape me,
kill me?”
“You are a
stupid mutt!” exclaims Seto narrowing his eyes, “But even a dog deserves better
than what those people who call themselves your family are giving you!”
“You are a
bastard!” exclaims Katsuya walking to the door.
“Katsuya…”
Katsuya
freezes with his hand reaching for the knob. He turns towards Seto with wide
eyes. “What did you just say?”
“I said…
Don’t go,” says Seto.
“I’m not
going anywhere… not really. I’m just heading to my room to get ready for school,”
says Katsuya smiling, “I’ll see you downstairs for breakfast.”
Seto
smiles. “All right.”
Katsuya
turns and heads out of the bedroom.
Seto
watches the door close silently. He whispers quietly to himself, “Let me
protect you, Katsuya… I need you.”
The door
opens again, and Mokuba, eyes closed and yawning, stumbles inside. “Big
brother?”
“Hello,
Mokuba, why are you up already?” asks Seto.
Mokuba
walks towards the bed and collapses onto the foot of it. He shakes from lack of
heat.
Seto rushes
to Mokuba’s side and places his hand on his little brother’s forehead.
“Big
brother… I feel tired,” whispers Mokuba opening his eyes just enough to see
Seto.
“You’re
burning up! You have a fever, Mokuba!” exclaims Seto pulling Mokuba up into the
center of the bed and covering him with the blankets. He climbs from bed and
heads into his bathroom, returning after just a moment with a thermometer and
some various medicines. He places the thermometer into Mokuba’s mouth.
“Mmm nod
tick,” mumbles Mokuba.
Seto removes
the thermometer from Mokuba’s mouth. “Hundred two.”
“I’m not
sick,” repeats Mokuba, speaking louder and clearer not that the thermometer
isn’t in his way.
“Yes you
are,” says Seto, “Does anything else hurt?”
Mokuba
shakes his head. “No… I’m just tired.”
“What’s
going on at school today?” asks Seto selecting a liquid medicine and pouring
the required dosage into the plastic cup that comes with the bottle. He passes
it to Mokuba.
“Hmm…”
Mokuba takes the cup and swallows down the strawberry flavored syrup. He licks
his lips once he’s done and passes the cup back to Seto. “No trips or projects.
No tests. I guess the only thing special is it’s dodge ball day in Phys Ed.”
“So if
wouldn’t be that bad if you missed the day. I want you to stay here and sleep,
Mokuba,” says Seto tucking his younger brother into the bed, “I’ll have the
doctor come by to check on you.”
Mokuba nods
and closes his eyes with a yawn.
Seto gets
up and starts his daily routine to get ready for school. He meets Katsuya in
the kitchen and hurriedly drags him to the limo with an explanation that
Mokuba’s sick and they need to get to school.
* * *
Seto crawls
into bed early that night because the storm raging outside causes the
electricity to go out, and while the mansion’s generator will bring on the
lights and a few of the appliances like the stove and refrigerator, it doesn’t
put out enough power to keep his complex computer running for very long. So
instead of working, he climbs into bed and falls asleep to the sound of the rain
and the thunder.
~~~~~~~~~~~~Seto’s~Dream~~~~~~~~~~~~
A whimper breaks the
silence of the night, followed by the rumble of thunder.
Kaiba
bolts up in bed and his cat-like ears twitch. His blue eyes, with the long slit
pupils, scan the room quickly. He doesn’t see anything unusual except for the
fact that he can see quite clearly in the darkness.
A flash
of light illuminates the room to show nothing out of order.
Another
whimper resounds in the otherwise silent house.
Kaiba’s
head jerks towards the door to the bedroom adjacent to his, and he scrambles
from bed as the thunder booms loudly overhead. His ears twitch as he hears the
whimpering growing louder with every step. He swings the door open.
Jou
cowers in a corner of the room far away from the windows. His dog ears hang
close to his head with his front paws covering them, and his tail, which would
normally be wagging happily, droops low to the floor. He whimpers like a
frightened puppy.
“Meow!”
exclaims Kaiba running to the corner and wrapping his arms and paws around Jou.
He blinks at his own words, quite sure that he had said ‘Don’t be scared.’ He
looks at himself in the mirror on the wall and sees his cat-ears, cat paws
instead of hands and feet, and cat tail poking out of his pajama pants. He
doesn’t take the time to ponder this change however because in his arms shakes
another more important concern. “Katsuya?”
Jou
looks up into Kaiba’s eyes as the roll of thunder echoes through the room.
Tears shimmer in his eyes from the light given off by the lightning. “Seto!
Woof, woof, woof! Arf!”
Kaiba
smiles as he listens to Jou’s words. He hears the dog language, but his mind,
or maybe it was his heart, translates the meaning for him ‘Seto! I was so
scared! Thank you!’
Jou
cuddles into Kaiba’s chest.
“Meow,
meow, meow, Katsuya,” says Kaiba. ‘Everything will be all right.’ He holds Jou
in a protective embrace. He thinks he hears a muffled whimper against his
chest. ‘Shouldn’t we be fighting like cats and dogs?’
‘I’m a
cat, and you’re a dog, but we don’t have to fight.’
Jou
cries into Kaiba’s chest as the lightning and thunder rain fire around the
mansion.
Kaiba
rubs Jou until the puppy falls asleep. He cuddles close to Jou and falls asleep
leaning against the wall.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seto snaps
awake and listens intently.
Rain
patters against the mansion windows. A boom of thunder echoes in the night. A
quiet whimper sounds from the room next door.
Seto
scrambles from his bed and races into Katsuya’s room.
A flash of
lightning outside illuminates the room, and a whimper accompanying the
thunderous boom draws Seto’s attention to the corner where Katsuya sits curled
up in a ball with his hands covering his ears.
Katsuya
whimpers as the thunder continues.
Seto rushes
over to Katsuya and pulls the scared teen into his arms. “It’s okay, Jou! Don’t
be afraid!”
“I’m not
afraid,” mumbles Katsuya before a roar of thunder-crashes that continue for
minutes on end forces him deeper into Seto’s arms and shaking far worse than
ever before.
“Don’t give
me that. I know you’re afraid of the storm,” whispers Seto smoothly, “Mokuba’s
afraid of the storms too.” He clutches tightly to Katsuya. “Come to my room,
puppy.”
“I don’t
want to bother you…”
“Then let’s
go into Mokuba’s room to keep him company and keep the storm from bothering
him,” whispers Seto, “He need never know that you are just as afraid as he is
and you won’t have to be alone.”
Katsuya
nods his head. “Okay, Kaiba.”
Seto stands
and pulls Katsuya up with him. He guides the blond into Mokuba’s room and over
to the younger teen’s Queen-sized bed.
Mokuba
jumps up as the thunder rolls outside. He looks at Seto and Katsuya with tears
in his eyes. He jumps towards them and hugs them both.
“We thought
we could all sleep in here,” says Seto smiling at Mokuba.
Mokuba nods
his head briskly.
Seto helps
Mokuba lie down in the bed again and he climbs in beside him. He looks at
Katsuya as he covers himself and Mokuba with the blanket. “Come on, Jou. Come
to bed.”
Mokuba
smiles slyly. “You can sleep beside Seto! We’ll move over!”
Katsuya
blushes slightly.
Mokuba
scoots over in bed and tugs on Seto’s shirt until he moves over as well so that
he’s lying in the middle of the bed.
Katsuya
walks up and gets into bed beside Seto. He pulls the blanket over himself.
Seto lies
on his back and uses one arm around each of the boys in bed with him to pull
them up against his chest.
Mokuba
rests his head on Seto’s chest while Katsuya’s head lies on the brunet’s
shoulder. “Good night, Jou, Seto.”
“Good
night, Mokuba,” whispers Katsuya.
“Good
night,” says Seto stroking Katsuya’s back and arm.
Katsuya and
Mokuba cling onto Seto as they all try to go back to sleep.
