Duke wondered around the halls of the castle, unable to sleep. It had to be a mixture of today and those smelly stables! He had to remember to ask Tristan WHY he didn’t ask for a proper room like a normal person! Only HE would sleep in a freakin’ stable attic!! There were still a few dead bodies littering the floor, but he tried to ignore them. If he was going to live here with Tristan and all these Vikings, this was a sight he had to get used to. He paused in his walk as a figure caught the corner of his eye.
The door to Seto’s room was open so Duke stopped in front of it. Seto sat beside his bed, sword still in hand. Duke saw that Jou and Mokuba were sound asleep in the bed already. Quietly, he knocked on the open door, startling Seto.
“I didn’t mean to frighten you.” Duke said in apolo. Se. Seto sighed and lowered his sword.
“It’s alright...what are you doing up so late?” Seto asked, staring at the blade of his sword. Duke entered the room and sat down in a nearby chair.
“I can’t sleep at all. The images of today keep flashing in my mind...not to mention the smell of the stables.” Seto chuckled.
“Where’s Tristan?”
“Asleep. I had to practically PRY his arms off of me!! Both him AND the horses smell!” Seto raised an amused eyebrow at him.
“You sure are mean to him.” Duke scoffed.
“I know he smells of hard work and labor, and I try to overlook it. But, it’s so hard when you’re right next to the person!” Seto just shook his head.
“Poor Tristan.” Duke looked over at Jou and Mokuba on the bed.
“How are they taking it?”
“Jou was raped, you know.” Duke gasped.
“No one told me, is he alright?” Seto nodded.
“He seems to be handling it well, but I can’t be sure. He might just be hiding his feelings from me so I don’t have to worry. Mokuba on the other hand came out just fine. When he found me, he had Annar and Beowulf with him, but he was safe. They all were.” Seto reached over and stroked his brother’s cheek. “They both mean so much to me that I can only thank the gods for their survival. Recently, my faith in the gods have been diminishing, but I think it’s coming back. Odin guided us to victory in this fight.”
“Why aren’t you asleep?” Duke asked
“Like you, I just can’t sleep. I’m worried about someone coming into my room and trying to do them harm. I want to be ready to protect them, should it come to that.” Seto bowed his head. “I couldn’t protect them today...”
“This was a disaster, Seto. There was nothing anyone could do, so don’t feel bad. You did what you could.”
“But it wasn’t enough.” He sighed. “Anyway, you should get back to bed. Tristan might get worried if he wakes up and you’re not there.”
“An earthquake couldn’t wake that guy up! Besides, I told you already, the events from today are keeping me awake. Can I stay here and keep you company? I could use some of it too.” Seto just nodded.
“Sure.”
The next morning, Yami called a meeting to discuss the events of the previous day. He only allowed his brothers, Seto, and Davin. Yugi wanted to join the meeting, but Yami wouldn’t let him. He didn’t want Yugi to get upset if they all started arguing or something. Yami figured it was best if their lovers didn’t know ALL the details about what’s going on, so he ordered them to stay in his room with Yugi. The five men gathered in the room and took a seat at the table, with Yami at the head. Yami noticed that everyone looked a bit sleep deprived, but that wasn’t an important matter at the moment.
“Seto,” Yami started “Did you record our loses?” Seto nodded and slid a single piece of paper over to Yami. Yami picked it up and started to look over it.
“As you can see, our loses were minor.” Seto stated. “Only five of our men and some of your grandfather’s pottery. We had more men wounded, but nothing fatal. Their loses were far more devastating than ours, even with the fact that we were ill-prepared for this sudden attack. We put up an excellent fight, Yami. Almost all of Keith’s men have been slain.” Yami placed the paper down in front of him.
“I trust that you have arranged for the removal of those slain? My castle is already swarming with flies and heavy with the thick smell of dead blood.”
“I’ve had men on it since late last night, Yami. The castle should be clean within a couple of days.” Yami nodded silently and turned his attention to Marik who was sitting at the opposite end of the table.
“Marik, what has been done about Keith? I assume you’ve already gone down to the dungeon to interrogate him?” Marik sneered and crossed his arms angrily.
“I didn’t get a chance too! That backstabbing fuck was still out cold when I got down there! He’s obviously guilty, Yami, so lets just kill him!”
“Calm down, Marik.” Yami said, holding up his hand. “I fully agree with you, but we should approach that matter last.” Marik slammed his fist on the table, startling the others.
“No, lets discuss minor matters first, then move on to more important ones. So, assuming no one has any objections,” He gave everyone the evil eye “Are there any suggestions for an execution?” Bakura was the first to speak up.
“I say we yank his intestines out, throw him in the middle of the market place, and let the stray dogs and cats go at him! It’s a nice slow torture process! He’ll have a couple of hours to live and suffer before he dies!” Bakura chuckled evilly at his own suggestion, a dark aurora glowing around him. Everyone ignored Bakura’s insane chuckling and turned back to Yami.
“Any other suggestions?” Yami asked, looking around the table. Marik started waving his hand around eagerly.
“Pick me! Pick me!!” Yami roll his eyes and sighed.
“Yes, Marik?”
“Lets tie ropes to each of his limbs and have some horses pull him apart!!” Everyone fell silent except for Bakura, who was still chuckling manically in his seat. Seto was the first to speak.
“Since this is going to cause controversy, how about we move on to more important matters. Keith’s not going anywhere anytime soon, so there’s no need to rush his punishment.” Yami nodded with a smile.
“Ah, the only voice of reason here.” Seto smirked.
“I know. Now, what can we do about Pegasus’s army? No doubt he will attack again when we least expect it.”
“But, we cut down his army by defeating Keith’s.” Bakura pointed out, but Seto shook his head.
“We can’t count on that, Bakura. It’s obvious Pegasus is the mastermind behind this, and Keith had the perfect motive to join forces with him. It shouldn’t be hard for Pegasus to ally with another force against us. We’re not exactly the most popular family around, as some tend to think.”
“How about Uncle Herrick?” Everyone turned to Davin, who had finally spoken something.
“Who?” Yami asked, not familiar with the name at all.
“Herrick Bolverk, or more known to outsides of the family as the “forgotten Bolverk”. He was adopted around the age of seven into the family by your grandfather. Not much is known about him, hence the title. That’s who I’ve been living with for quite some time now. He’s a very companionate man, Yami, who loved your father as a true brother. Those are the words from his mouth. I’m sure we can count on him to help us.”
“But, why haven’t we heard about him before?” Marik asked. “I haven’t heard anyone mention his name, not even father. You would think you’d hear his name at least once??” Davin crossed his arms and leaned back against the wall.
“I’m not sure about that, Marik. I’ve wondered that for quite some time now. When I asked him about it, he always made up an excuse. It’s obviously something secret.”
“Where does he live?” Yami asked, curious as to know more about this new “uncle”.
“South of here, close to the shore. It’s about a three days ride.” Yami turned to Seto.
“Whayouryour take on this?” Seto placed his elbows on the table and threaded his fingers.
“I think we should go with Davin’s plaHe tHe turned to Davin. “Can you guide us there?” Davin nodded. “Then I say we go with it, Yami. We have no other options.” Yami looked at his brothers.
“What are your opinions?” He asked them.
“I’m game.” Marik replied.
“Ditto.” Bakura followed after.
“Then it’s settled.” Yami said, standing up from his seat. “Seto, I would like you to stay here with Marik and Bakura, just in case we’re attacked again.” Marik and Bakura’s cheeks puffed out in anger.
“Why do we have to stay?!” They shouted in unison.
“If we do get attacked, you two are more needed here. You’re job is to defend the castle. Also, Seto, I want you to remain here in my absence. I need someone with a level head organizing and commanding. You are the only voice of reason here I can trust.” Seto smirked and nodded.
“I accept, Yami.”
“Yami,” Davin started “Who else are we going to take with us if not your brothers or advisor? We need someone else with knowledge of what’s going on.” Yami sat back down and crossed his arms, thinking.
“How about Duke?” Seto offered a name. “He lived among Pegasus and Keith for a bit and knew about the attack.” Yami gave a curt nod.
“It’s settled” Yami said “We’ll take Duke with us. Seto, have Tristan ready our best horses. We leave in two days, dismissed.” Everyone got up from their chairs silently, except Bakura who had stormed out of the room. Yami figured he was mad about beingt hot home, but there might have been more to it. He followed Bakura half way down the hall until he caught up with him. “Bakura, hold up!” Bakura stopped and turned to him.
“What is it?”
“Are you mad about not being able to come with us?” Bakura snorted and crossed his arms.
“Of course I am, I’m pissed off!!”
“Well, I’m sorry, Bakura, but my orders are for you to remain here. Also, I’ve been meaning to ask you, are you sure you’re alright? You seem to be taking your...well, you’re taking it very well. That’s surprising for a person to overlook something drastic like that.”
“I AM overlooking it. I think of it this way, there’s no sense in dwelling on it, since there’s nothing I can do about it. The only thing I can do is push it from my mind and focus on all the good things.” Yami just blinked his eyes, not sure if he should believe Bakura’s words. Bakura was very good at hiding his true feelings, that much Yami knew. Howeverkurakura was never one to care about things that happen to him, and just got on with his life. But, this was more than a normal y day day occurrence in Bakura’s life, so.... “Earth to Yami!!”
“What? Oh, sorry. *ahem* So, you sure you’re alright? I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable coming to talk to me if you need to.” Bakura shook his head.
“Nah, I’m fine. I’m off to drink and gamble, see ya later.” Bakura turned from him and continued down the hall.
“Later.”
