C is for Coma
“Big brother, I’m so sorry. If I hadn’t asked him to come over, maybe this wouldn’t have happened.”Serenity looked up from where she was sitting quietly.“Mokuba, I don’t think either one of them would be happy to hear you say that,” Serenity gently told him.Mokuba sniffled. He nodded his head.“I know. But I can’t help it.”Serenity nodded sadly.“I understand. But the others will be coming soon.”Mokuba stood up, rubbing his hands across his tear-streaked face. Serenity stood up to walk him to the bathroom to help him clean his face. Lying on separate beds, unconscious with injuries, were Seto and Joey. Unknown to the two siblings, they weren’t the only ones in the room. Invisible to all but each other, the spirits of the two young men stood in a corner of the room.“This is completely fucked up,” Joey mumbled.“For once, Mutt, I agree,” Seto said. The two spirits had been beside their bodies ever since the truck had slammed into Seto’s car. According to the doctors, it was a miracle they were still alive. Joey had been knocked unconsciously almost instantly due to it being his side the truck slammed into; Seto had held on for about five seconds longer. They had been there when their siblings had come rushing in; when Yugi and the gang arrived to lend their support; when the doctors had told them they were in comas; when the doctors delivered the news that it was unlikely they would ever wake. What the two of them couldn’t understand was why they were seeing all this. Seto had thought it was all a dream or something until Joey had reached over and pinched him hard. He was a little embarrassed by the squeak he had made, but it felt good to punch the blonde’s shoulder hard in retaliation.Suddenly, the two males found themselves in a courtyard with a large, running fountain in the center. A short man stood in front of the fountain with a big smile on his face. Joey spoke first.“Where the devil are we now?!” Joey exclaimed. The short man chuckled.“You stand here on one of the many paths to Heaven,” the man explained.Joey was too stunned to reply to that. Seto, however, had no such problem.“Why are we here? And who are you?” Seto demanded.“My name is Gabriel and I’m an angel. You’re here to make a choice. You see…both of you stand at the abyss of death and life.” Sad smile. “Only one of you can live.”Both stared at him with wide-eyed stares. The angel – Gabriel – explained that the choice was up to them. He told them that the fountain behind him would allow them to see how their future would look if they were the one to live.“You won’t see each other’s future. Only your own.”Joey glanced over at Seto who stared at nothing but the fountain. The two males slowly walked towards Gabriel. He instructed them to gaze down into the water and watch the future play out. Joey leaned over the fountain and stared down at himself./……/
A many years older Joey Wheeler was putting a bunch of school balls away into a large basket.
“Mr. J! Mr. J!”Joey turned and smiled as a group of mixed-ages kids came running to greet him. They were all wearing shirts that looked like camp shirts. The camp read as Joey’s Haven.“Hey, kids. Where are you all heading?” Joey asked, smiling a big smile.“We’re going to the Aquarium, sir,” answered one of the older kids.“Great! I’m sure you’re all going to have a blast. But you better hurry before the bus leaves you here,” Joey teased. The children gave him various hugs and high fives before running off. Joey went back to putting the equipment away before standing up with a small wince. He put a hand to his back with a small, sad smile.“Getting old sucks,” a familiar voice said.Joey turned and smiled when he saw Serenity. An obviously very pregnant Serenity. Joey walked a few steps and pulled his sister into a gentle hug. When he stepped back, he brought a hand down on her stomach.“How’s he doing?” Joey asked.“The doctor says he’s doing well. He’s growing at a normal rate.” Sad smile. “I just hope we make it all the way.”Joey returned the sad smile.“I’m sure he will, Ren.”/……/
He was working at his desk. Seto hadn’t seemed to change in much time. His door opened and then closed with supposedly no one coming in. He finished signing his document, carefully sliding his chair back. He counted slowly to ten.
At ten, he suddenly threw his arms up and suddenly had a lapful of giggling children. It was a pair of twins, a girl and boy, with black hair. He leaned down over those backs, pressing them down gently with a chuckle.“What are you two monkeys doing here?” Seto asked.“We’re on our way to the airport. Papa said we could stop and say goodbye,” the little girl answered.Seto smiled sadly. “Speaking of your Papa, where is he?”“He’s outside in the hall, Uncle Seto!” exclaimed the little boy.Seto leaned back and the two kids scrambled to their feet. When he pushed himself to his feet, both snatched a hold of a hand and dragged him around to his door. They came out to the hallway where Seto found Mokuba helping the secretary clean up a mess. Mokuba finished helping her and stood up when he saw his big brother.“Hey,” Mokuba said.“Hey,” Seto said back. The secretary suddenly sprung up and asked the kids if they were thirsty. They immediately unlatched from their uncle and latched onto her. Seto waited until the trio disappeared down the hall and around the corner.“I wish you could have stayed longer,” Seto said.Mokuba’s smile didn’t quite reach his eyes.“You know I can’t do that, Seto. The kids…the kids and I have made a home for ourselves in New York. I can’t take them from their school and their friends. And I can’t ask you to leave the company, big brother,” Mokuba told him.Seto nodded.“It doesn’t make it any easier every time I say goodbye to you. Or Cayla and Torin,” Seto confessed.“I know. But we call. We Skype. And the kids like writing you letters. Even if it does take an eternity for letters to get here.”They were both thinking the same thing. It wasn’t the same./……/
“You have a choice to make. I’ll give you both time to think this over.”
Gabriel had moved them to a room that had a few small amenities, including a large window, a couch and even a bed. Seto currently sat on the couch with his head laid back and eyes shut. Joey stood over by the window with one arm pressing against the wall and his forehead leaning on that arm. Unknown to either male, their thoughts were running along the same thought.[It was a nice future. I was making a difference in those kids’ lives. But it felt like something was missing and there was no tan line on my ring finger. How badly did Kaiba dying affect me?][I was still CEO. Mokuba made me an uncle and gave me a wonderful niece and nephew. But they don’t live anywhere near me. I was alone and lonely. How did I react after I woke up and Wheeler didn’t?]Seto opened his eyes. He knew if he passed away that Yugi, Joey and the others would look after his brother. He was ready to accept death.“Wheeler,” he called.“What?” Joey growled in a mumbling tone.“You should be the one to live, but I won’t force my choice on you. So the choice is yours,” Seto said in a clear, strong voice. He saw Joey visibly stiffen before lowering his arm and partially turning his head towards him.“What?”“I’m leaving the decision to you, Wheeler.”“No.”Seto’s head snapped up in surprise.“Wheeler-,” Seto started.Joey whipped around with a beyond pissed off look on his face.“Hell no! I don’t want to die, but I’m not putting your kid brother through the pain of you dying! I won’t do it. This isn’t right!”By this point, tears were freely falling down Joey’s face. He squeezed his eyes shut and turned his head away. It was the first time Seto had ever seen the blonde so open about his emotions. The tears cascaded down the blonde’s cheeks and his body started shaking with a small, barely audible sob.“Joey.”Joey was so startled by the use of his given name that he turned his head back around. He could see the sorrow echoing in the brunette’s eyes. Seto held out his hand in offering. Joey didn’t even bother to think about questioning the other male’s actions. He crossed the room and put his hand in Seto’s.Seto gently pulled him down onto his lap and hugged him close to his body. Joey buried his face in his shirt and continued to sob quietly. Seto laid his cheek down on top of Joey’s head and sunk a hand in his hair. The other hand gripped his lower back as he held the blonde close. He didn’t shush him or tell him he understood. They were literally in the same boat; there was no question about it.At some point, they moved from the couch to the bed. Their anguish transformed into a burning passion between the two of them. Seto lay underneath Joey with his hands up the inside of the blonde’s backing of his shirt. His hands roamed the near smooth skin. Joey had unbuttoned Seto’s shirt with one hand and that hand now held his bare side tightly as he nipped at the brunette’s ear.Seto slipped his knee up to press against the prominent erection pressing against the seam of the blonde’s jeans. Joey moaned at the pressure, allowing for Seto to smoothly roll them over. He removed the blonde’s shirt easily and attacked the blonde’s throat. He licked, nipped, and sucked on the succulent neck. Joey slipped his fingers through Seto’s remarkably soft hair, whimpering at the sensations trembling through his body. The next thing to go was the jeans and pants. They fit together like a puzzle piece when Joey spread his legs and Seto lay down between them. He gently thrust his hips against the blonde’s, earning more whimpers and a frustrated groan. Joey used his grip on the brunette’s hair to yank him off his neck and up into a kiss. The kiss was just as slow and soft as their movements.Joey moaned, opening his mouth wider for Seto to conquer, when one of Seto’s hands cupped him through his boxers. Seto gently pumped the rapidly growing member. Joey’s hands slipped down to his shoulders where his shaky hands dug his nails in. Seto didn’t mind; Joey should see the mark he left on his neck.Neither male knew when Gabriel would be back so they used every second they had to come together./……/
When Gabriel returned, each male was back in their respective place; Joey by the window, Seto by the couch. The bed was made and didn’t look as though anyone had even sat on it.
“Have you come to a decision?” Gabriel asked.“I wanna ask ya a question,” Joey said, suddenly. He slowly turned around with a frown on his face. Gabriel nodded in understanding.“If Kaiba dies, where’s he going?” Joey asked.Gabriel raised an eyebrow. He glanced at Seto before looking back at Joey.“You mean…”“Downstairs or up. Where would he go?” Joey demanded.Gabriel gave him a soft smile.“Seto Kaiba will be the same as you, Joey Wheeler. He has a place in Heaven,” Gabriel assured him.Joey chuckled with a small grin before crossing over to sit beside Seto on the couch. Gabriel’s gaze landed on their hands as Joey slipped his into Seto’s. Seto squeezed his hand.“Then our answer hasn’t changed,” Seto said, looking at Joey instead of the angel.“And what choice is that?” Gabriel asked, cheerfully.Joey smiled at Seto as he spoke.“We choose…both of us.”Gabriel frowned. Then he shook his head.“I told you before, Joey Wheeler. Only one may live,” Gabriel explained.“You misunderstood him,” Seto said, finally turning his head to regard the angel. The angel raised his eyebrows.“Oh? Enlighten me, then, Seto Kaiba.”Seto smirked.“Neither one of us wish to die. Nor do we wish to live while the other dies. Kill us both.”Surprisingly, Gabriel did not appear to be shocked by this decision. If anything else, he seemed happy about the decision.“That…was the answer I was hoping for. Destined souls are so difficult to bring together, especially with ones as stubborn as you two," Gabriel remarked. They exchanged a look before staring confused at Gabriel.“In this world, there are people who are meant to meet. We call them destined souls. You two proved to be an anomaly. A disturbance in the norm, if you will. We had hoped the car accident would allow the two of you to talk on an even level where no one could disturb you. You were both heading down a dark, lonely path.”Both males took time to try and process this information. It was Joey who finally broke the silence.“What kind of messed up system ya got goin’ on up here?!” he exclaimed.Seto snorted. Gabriel crossed his arms and smirked.“Oh, we’re not any more messed up than your neck, Wheeler.”Joey frowned. He brought a hand up to his neck and felt nothing. Then he moved over to the other side where he felt the deep, large mark Seto had left there. His eyebrows shot down and Joey glared at an entirely too smug Seto.“How do we return to our bodies?” Seto asked, smirking.Gabriel walked over and tapped a finger to Seto’s forehead. His eyes fell shut and he disappeared. Joey, however, snagged his wrist before he could touch him. They had a few more things to talk about./……/
Joey groaned as he attempted to pull his shirt on. Seto chuckled, but gritted his teeth as he pulled his arms through the sleeves of his own shirt. He finished with his and turned around to walk over to Joey who stood with his back to him. The hospital room door was closed so the two males could have privacy to dress.
Seto reached up and snagged Joey’s flailing limb. Joey froze and allowed Seto to gently pull his arm carefully through the sleeve. Seto pressed up against his back as he smoothed his hands down the front of his shirt. Joey chuckled when he felt a nip at his ear. Seto smoothed a thumb over the scratches on his neck.Joey turned his head around a little when Seto pressed a kiss to his jaw.“Ready to go home?” Joey murmured.Seto made an affirmative sound as he rolled his shoulders.“I’m ready to go to sleep on a bed that doesn’t feel like bricks.” Smile. “And with a little blonde puppy I just acquired.”Joey turned his head around to nip at Seto’s ear.“Don’t forget that puppies bite,” Joey whispered.Seto caught his mouth with his. They shared a small kiss until a knock knock came to the door. They separated with equal grins on their faces.“Think we should let our sibs in,” Joey commented.“They can wait,” Seto murmured.Joey chuckled as Seto pulled him into another kiss. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
