3.
He awoke to
the soft calling of his name, and groggily blinked his eyes open.
Pale-green
dove eybrimbrimmed with tears, looked down on him in concern and wary.
“Nii-san,
you’re awake! Oh, thank kami, we were all worried about you!” exclaimed his
younger sister, right before she threw her arms around his neck and sobbed into
his chest.
Katsuya
grit his teeth, sweat forming on his brow, as he felt a jolt of red-hot pain
flash through his left shoulder, but managed to croak out:
“Shi..zuka?
You here? And who’s ‘we’?”
“’We’ as in
‘us’, you crazy, amnesiac, tough-as-nails life-saver, you!” bellowed a familiar
voice, and Honda appeared in Jou’s sight, followed immediately by Yugi. Both
shared the same half-worried, half-alert look as Shizuka, only that theirs
intermingled with a lot of relief. Katsuya smirked weakly.
“Great,
when I first awoke, I thought, I’m in heaven, seeing, as an angel smiled down
at me,” he winked at Shizuka, who gave a half giggle, “but now, seeing the two
of you-“
“We’re here
also!” yelled Anzu and Otogi, pushing Honda and Yugi aside, both loaded with
presents and flowers.
Moaning,
Katsuya plopped his head back on the pillow.
“Ok, now I definitely
know, that I’m in hell!” he declared, causing the others to laugh.
That was, until
Yugi broke out in tears and, grabbing him by his shoulders, shook his best
friend vividly, what caused Jou’s eyes to bulge out from pain.
“Oh,
Katsuya, we were so worried about you, you have no idea, how much you scared
us! Please don’t ever do something like that again!” cried the tri-color
haired duelist.
Meanwhile,
Katsuya, in a world of pain, tried to escape Yugi’s death grip, until he
couldn’t take it anymore, and screamed:
“Mouto!
Shoulder! Bullet! PAIN!!!”
Immediately,
Yugi let go of him, and Katsuya fell back on the bed, where he cringed and
whimpered several moments, until the hurting dimmed into a dull ache. Finally,
the tension left his body, and he eased into a more confortable position.
Once the
others saw his face relax, Honda cleared his throat, and asked in a serious
tone:
“You know,
there’s just one thing that boggles our minds: What exactly happened back
there?”
“That’s
precisely, what I would like to know aswell, young man!” came a deep, friendly
voice from the door.
The
teenagers swerved, and stared at the assembled group gathered in the entrance, consisting
of as nurse, a doctor, two police officers and-
“Seto
Kaiba?!?” gasped the others in unison. The CEO half shrugged, half nodded,
before replying calmly:
“I’m merely
here as witness, seeing as I could convince Inspector Sakagami-san here,” he
nodded towards the elder of the policemen, “that you did, what you did, because
you felt the need to protect...us from harm.”
He
reflexively brushed his short hairs back, revealing a small, flesh-colored
strip of band-aid adorning his ear.
Inspector
Sakagami huffed, and, pulling out a block and pen, continued:
“Still,
there are some details, which remain a little..foggy. Care to tell us, what
happened, Jounouchi-kun?”
Tilting his
head back, so he could stare at the ceiling, Katsuya replied:
“You now,
I’m not quiet sure of that myself.”
Everything
happened so fast, he recalled Seto looking back at him
over his shoulder, and then his blue eyes widened, when he saw the bullet pass through Katsuya’s shoulder. He threw himself on the ground, even as the blond was carried past
him and then crushed upon the
street.
Several
moments he lay there, dazed, until he heard Shizuka’s and the other’s
voices, and then-another shot.
His
sister’s gasp jolted him awake; slowly rising his head, he took in the
situation with frightening clarity:
Yugi and
the others, too far away to be of any good, but close enough, to be
in danger.
Seto, being
held in check by the hitman, and Mokuba rushing towards
his brother, only to be caught
in a steel-like grip. The assassin was too busy retelling his story and keeping an eye on the gang and both Kaiba brothers, than to keep check with him.
And then
Katsuya saw the Ruger, which had made the attacker’s coat so
suspiciously stiff and heavy.
His left
arm and shoulder were numb and useless, the blood loss made him
light-headed, but the rest of his body was functioning perfectly.
Stealthily sliding the knife from where it was hidden underneath his
pant leg, he crawled out of Tokunaga’s sight, and
positioned himself behind him, before rising to full height.
His right
hand snaked above Hitoshi’s shoulder, knife pointed at his arm, as this
one cocked the gun, and Katsuya knew, this was his only chance.
And then, all of a sudden, the blade in
his hand shifted, and, with a quick, almost expert flick of his wrist, neatly
cut through skin, meat and sinews, tore open the addam’s apple, severed the
main veins and arterias, and destroyed Hitoshi’s trachea.
He saw the
blood spraying from the wound, Seto’s horrified look, but nothing was as bad as
the feeling of arousal and utter satisfaction, of having killed someone.
That’s when the void started laughing.
Sakagami-san
tilted a brow, but continued writing along. Finally, he rested the clipboard on
his knees, pen tapping impatently against the scribbled sheets of paper.
“There’s a
few things about your story, that don’t quiet...click. For instance: how did
you know, the man carried a gun?”
Golden eyes
stared numbly into grey ones.
“As I said,
I live in the bad part of town. Knowing if a guy’s armed is rather vital in a
place, where drive-by shootings are a regular happening. We had two cases of
armed robbery and four burglaries alone this month.”
A smug grin
tilted his lips.
“Funny, how
you guys only show up, when someone get’s killed, ne?”
The
inspector chose to ignore that last sentence, but nodded instead.
“Hmm, that
explains, why you could react so swiftly. And why you’re carring a knife
around with you.”
Again, he
locked eyes with Katsuya, who remained astonishingly calm.
Letting his
gaze drift over the report in his lap again, he paused on the second or third
page, before grunting:
“There is
one more thing: the-“ he shot a look at Anzu and Shizuka, “cutting, how..how
did you manage to do that? I mean, our coroner almost hopped sideways, when he
saw the bo-wound. Where did you pick up that way of..handling a blade? And don’t
tell me, you picked it up on the street, because I cross-checked with my
colleagues from the other stations, and no known gang or solo ripper in the
whole district uses a technique even remotely similar to yours. So, again,
where or whom did you get it from?”
Katsuya
again looked skywards, before closing his eyes and answering in full honesty:
“I really
have no idea.”

Hmm, let’s
just say: Katsuya’s holding back a few tiny details…c ya round!^^
