Warnings: Boys in love with boys dead ahead(or more accurately below), turn back now if you
can't handle it. Also, beware of depressing rambling from the authoress at the end.
In like a lion, out like a lamb. Wasn't that the old saying about March? On the first day of the
month it snowed so hard the closed the school; looked like they'd have to wait till the end of the
month for pleasant weather. Not that the weather really mattered to Ryou at the moment. All he
could focus on was the man seated at table 17 over in the corner. The white-haired waiter was
peering around the corner from the safety of the kitchen, trying to get a good look at his newest
customer.
No doubt about it, he was one of them.
Ryou darted back into the kitchen and leaned against the far wall. Ever since he had gotten that
apology note they had been coming. Their looks varied, but they were easily identifiable by the
solid black bands they wore on the middle finger of their left hand. The ring's meaning was unclear
to the teen, but he knew it meant one thing...they were here to see him.
According to the hostesses, they specifically requested to be seated in Ryou's section, sometimes
even waiting over an hour when they were crowded. Once seated they would order a simple
appetizer and a drink (usually coffee or wine depending on the time of day) and when the bill
came they paid and always left Ryou a $25 tip and a business card for If Only, a local nightclub.
The first few times Ryou had pocketed the cash and tossed the business card, but as their visits
became more regular, much to the other poorly-tipped waiters' annoyance, he began to feel more
and more uncomfortable. What was the meaning of it all?
A tug on his hair stopped him from further pondering the thought.
"You're not being paid to hide in the kitchen Ryou. Now get out there and make yourself useful,"
a deep voice belonging to the shift manager Tony told him.
"I-I'm sorry. I'll get right on it." Ryou gave the man an apologetic smile before scampering out
into the dining area. As he approached table 17, he took a closer look at the man seated there.
Ryou didn't recognize him as one of the regular five that often came and he wondered what had
accounted for the change. The other five were so familiar to him that while he hadn't taken the
time to learn their names, or perhaps they hadn't offered them, he had given them little nicknames
based on their most distinctive feature. The regulars consisted of the mustache, baldy, the nose,
glasses, and nine fingers. This man had a full head of blond hair and sparkling blue eyes. His face
was very angular and his posture suggested he was someone rather important, or at least thought
he was.
He looked up from the menu he had been studying when he saw a flash of white out of the corner
of his eye. "Ryou, I was starting to think you were going to hide back in that kitchen all
afternoon."
So he had seen him. "I'm sorry, do I know you?" Ryou asked. "It's just that I haven't told you my
name yet." Handsome as the stranger was, there was something about this man that made him
very uncomfortable.
A sly smile. "No, I don't believe we have met. I have heard a lot about you though. 'He shines
brighter than anyone in the place, with hair as white as the clouds and the innocent eyes of a
child.'" The blond let his blue eyes travel over Ryou. "At least that's what I heard."
"Who told you that?" Ryou whispered. He had unconsciously taken a step back as the man spoke
as though he feared he would suddenly reach out and grab him.
"Who told me?" He repeated. "A very close friend of mine. He also told me you had a boyfriend.
Is that true?"
A chill passed through Ryou and he chided himself for being so easily spooked. "Yes."
The blond pouted slightly at Ryou's confirmation. Then he smiled.
"That's too bad...but things change." He brushed a few stray hairs behind his ear as he spoke.
"That won't." Ryou replied without even hesitating. He didn't know what this guy was up to, but
he wasn't going to let him plants s of of doubt. Jounouchi loved him and he loved Jounouchi,
end of story.
"Fair enough. I didn't mean to upset you Ryou," the blond put on a fake smile and raised his hands
in surrender.
Ryou stepped back up to the table, but remained out of the man's reach. "Now, what can I get
you to eat?"
The man ignored the obvious edge to Ryou's voice and glanced down at his menu.
"Actually, I don't think I'll be having anything today."
The man rose, pushed his seat back in and walked out of the restaurant. Ryou just stood there for
a moment before shrugging the whole incident off. As he picked up the menu to return to the
hostess, a small rectangular card fell out. Picking it up Ryou felt a familiar knot in his stomach.
It was a business card for If Only.
Jounouchi pocketed his lighter and exhaled a puff of smoke. He was standing out on the back
porch staring up at the sky. The stars were out, but with all the lights from the city just off in the
distance and the numerous street lights from the surrounding neighborhoods, they weren't as
visible as they might have been. As he stared at the small specks of light, he tried to remember the
stories about the constellations he had learned during his childhood trips to the planetarium.
He came up blank. All he could remember was never being able to make out the pictures. He
figured the alcoholic beverages must have been awfully strong back when they were coming up
with the constellations. There was no way a W was a queen sitting in her throne. He almost
laughed, remembering Honda's desperate attempts to memorize the different patterns and stories,
swearing that they would come in handy on future dates. Apparently girls found that crap
romantic...he wouldn't know.
Flicking some ash into the yard he pulled his jacket closer. Ryou insisted that if he had to smoke
he do it outside. So here he was, outside freezing his ass off trying to ignore thoughts of the warm
bed that was waiting for him back inside the house.
Growing tired of star gazing, he shifted his gaze to the expanse of snow covering the yard. The
moonlight was reflecting off it's surface making it glow. In the corner of the yard were two
snowmen, remnants of Jounouchi and Ryou's earlier snowy excursion. Jounouchi had been
pushing for a snowball fight but Ryou had felt that was too violent and opted for building
snowmen. Jounouchi of course had given in to his lover's wishes.
Ryou's was the taller of the two, proof of his years of practice, and qualified as a typical
snowman. Two coal eyes, black hat, broomstick in hand, licorice rope lips, and a carrot nose.
Jounouchi's was less typical. Oversized black sunglasses, licorice mouth shaped in an O, coal
nose, playboy in hand, and a carrot placed strategically lower on his snowy body. Although he had
given Jounouchi a stern word or two on "proper conduct when building snowmen", he knew
Ryou had been amused by the creative stunt. Even now Jounouchi laughed looking at the horny
snowman.
Jounouchi put out his cigarette and headed back into the house. He quickly shed himself of his
boots and jacket. He stripped down to his boxers in the hallway outside of their bedroom and,
clothes in hand, crept into the room. He dropped the clothes in the corner, reasoning he could put
them in the hamper tomorrow. Taking just a moment to admire the sleeping form in the bed,
Jounouchi slid under the covers.
Ryou stirred slightly as he felt the bed shift, but was quick to roll over and drift back towards
sleep. He would have made it to, had he not been touched by two ice cold hands under the covers.
His eyes shot open and he heard himself emit a small yelp.
"What?" Jounouchi asked as he felt Ryou push him away. That wasn't the greeting as has hoping
for.
"You're hands are freezing!" Ryou had scooted all the way to the other side of the queen sized
bed and had pulled the covers up to his chin.
Jounouchi rolled his eyes. "Is that all?"
"'Is that all,'" Ryou parroted. "Just keep your hands to yourself until they warm up."
"If I didn't know they were cold how am I supposed to know when they're warm again?"
Ryou opened his mouth to speak, but found he didn't have an answer. He felt Jounouchi's hands
reaching for him again and made a quick scramble to the foot of the bed to avoid them.
Jounouchi pouted at Ryou's escape. "Oh come on, don't be so cold."
"Funny."
"I thought so," Jounouchi smirked. Then he had an idea. Reaching along the side of the bed he
found what he was looking for and slipped them over his hands. "Ok Ryou, it's safe now." He
looked Ryou in the eyes and let him see his sincerity. "I promise."
Ryou moved back up to lay beside Jounouchi. He felt hands covered in a soft fabric pull him
close and he snuggled up to the firm chest out of habit. He felt the soft fabric stroke his back and
he racked his brain to place the feel. What on earth had Jounouchi put over his hands? As the
fabric covered hands began to stroke his hair an unpleasant scent hit him. Ryou crinkled his nose
as he tried to deduce what was going on. Then it dawned on him.
He flew out of his lover's embrace. "Socks, Jounouchi? Used socks!?"
Jounouchi raised two sock covered hands in surrender. "No good?"
Ryou silently shook his head. "Take them off please."
Jounouchi slowly slid the white cotton socks off his hands and dropped them back on the floor.
He lay back down, excepting the fact that they would be sleeping on opposite sides of the bed
tonight. So, he was completely surprised to feel Ryou once again curl up against him.
"What about my icy hands?"
Ryou placed his boyfriend's hands around him and placed a kiss on his chest.
"I'll live."
Snuggling in closer to each other they drifted off to sleep.
The annoying beeping of an alarm clock roused the two boys from their dreams. Jounouchi
reached out to hit the snooze button, but Ryou beat him to it and switched it over to the radio
instead. Some eighties hair band filled the room with noise. Ryou got out of the bed and, grabbing
his school uniform, headed down the hall to the bathroom. Hearing the sound of running water,
Jounouchi turned the radio off and went back to sleep.
The feel of something wet on his forehead and cheek roused him fifteen minutes later. He slowly
opened one eye and saw Ryou leaning over him, damp hair dangling down in Jounouchi's face.
Jounouchi closed his eye and attempted to ignore the fact that it was Monday morning and he was
expected to get up and attend school.
"Time to get up Katsuya," Ryou's sweet voice whispered in his ear.
Jounouchi chose to ignore him.
"Please?" Ryou asked, slightly louder this time.
Jounouchi faked snoring.
'So that's how it's gonna be,' Ryou thought before getting a firm grip on the covers and yanking
them back.
Jounouchi's boxer-clad body instinctively curled in on itself as a rush of cold air beset it. He
stubbornly managed to keep his eyes closed though, much to Ryou's annoyance. Time to move to
plan B.
"Fine, I'll just tell everyone that you weren't feeling well." Ryou kissed Jounouchi's cheek and left
the room.
Jounouchi smiled to himself and snuggled under the covers once again. He was just getting comfy
again when herd ard a crash and a yell come from the kitchen. Jounouchi was on his feet in an
instant and racing down the hall.
"Ryou are you alright!?" Jounouchi asked as he stumbled into the kitchen. What he saw sickened
him. Ryou was sitting on the counter smirking at him and a metal bowl lay on the floor. He'd been
had. Ryou jumped down off the counter and approached him.
"Why you sneaky little-" Jounouchi was cut off by Rs ins index finger on his lips.
"Language Katsuya." Ryou warned, amusement sparkling in his soft brown eyes. "Besides you did
the same thing to me last week when I wanted to go to bed early. Where do you think I got the
idea from?"
It was true, he had pulled the stunt on Ryou just last week. Remembering that, he was rather
embarrassed that he had fallen for it. Still, he'd rather be slightly embarrassed than have anything
bad happen to Ryou. Brushing aside the fear that had been clenching his heart since he heard the
yell, he crushed his lips to Ryou's.
Pulling back for air, Ryou smiled at him. "Anyway, now that you're up you really should go get
ready for school."
Jounouchi groaned in protest, but did so anyway. Twenty minutes later, the two boys were pulling
into the student parking lot.
That Monday, like all school days, went by torturously slow, and by the time Ryou got to work he
felt like he had accidently stepped into some sort of hell dimension. He changed into his work
uniform in the bathroom and then went to punch in. On his way to do so, he bumped into Brenda.
"Sorry Brenda," Ryou apologized blushing slightly in embarrassment.
"Don't worry about it hun, I was looking for you anyway."
"Why?" Ryou asked.
"Because you have a phone call. I told him you weren't here yet, but he insisted that you had just
walked in. Guess he was right," Brenda explained.
Ryou felt a sudden chill shoot through him. How did this person know he just got here? Perhaps it
was just a coincidence, but still...
"Did you happen to catch their name?"
Brenda's smile widened. "He claims to be Leland Markus, but I highly doubt THE Leland Markus
is calling you." The rudeness of her comment seemed to dawn on her, and she added, "No
offense."
Ryou just smiled politely.
"Anyway, he's on line 3. Don't talk long; we're pretty busy today for some reason."
That said, Brenda turned on her heel and left. Ryou took a deep breath and cautiously headed
over to the phone.
"Hello?"
"Why hello Ryou, it's so good to hear your voice again." The voice on the other line sounded
deep, older.
"Who is this?"Ryou didn't even try to hide the discomfort in his voice.
"Didn't that women tell you?" An exasperated sigh. "It's Leland, Leland Markus."
The name still meant nothing to Ryou, who had never been that good with names.
"Do I know you, because I can't really see why you're calling me at work." Something about this
whole thing made Ryou want to hang up the phone and just head home. Suppressing the urge, he
waited for a response.
"I suppose I didn't make as much of an impression as I had hoped. We met at the restaurant a few
weeks ago, you were just leaving with your boyfriend, I sent you an apology note, any of this
ringing a bell?" Leland asked.
Ryou silently nodded before remembering he was on the phone. "Yes, I remember now. Was
there something you wanted Mr. Markus?"
"I'd prefer you call me Leland, but there will be time for that later. I suppose I just wanted to hear
your voice. You see, I've been too busy to stop by and see you and you keep declining my
invitation, so I thought I'd call. I didn't want to bother you at home, so I called you at work."
Leland's voice seemed to become darker as he spoke, as though his woreld eld some sort of
hidden threat.
Ryou paled. "You know my phone number?"
Leland's rich laugh sounded over the line. "Don't sound so shocked Ryou, I know lots of things
about you."
Ryou was silent, his eyes darting around looking for someone to ask for help. Who was this
Leland Ma and and what did he want from him?
"Anyway, I suppose I should let you get to work, you can't afford to get fired after all. I'll see you
around Ryou." Leland drew out the teen's name, as though he were savoring not just the name,
but the boy himself.
Ryou heard a click signaling that Leland had hung up but he just stood there with the phone to his
ear. The call had scared him. That deep voice still echoed clearly in his head.
/...there will be time for that later./
/...I know lots of things about you./
/I'll see you around Ryou./
Ryou felt sick to his stomach and just as his knees gave out, he felt a pair of strong arms encircle
him. Dropping the receiver, Ryou struggled against the embrace. Sensing the boy's fear, the arms
quickly released him. Ryou whirled around to meet a familiar pair of honey eyes.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you Ryou," Jounouchi apologized. "It just looked like you were
about to fall. Are you ok?" Jounouchi could see the tears forming in Ryou's eyes and felt
extremely guilty for startling the poor boy. He should have remembered how jumpy Ryou could
be.
In a flash, Ryou was back in Jounouchi's arms, clinging to him desperately. He felt Jounouchi's
hand rubbing circles on his back and he let out a shaky breath.
"K-Katsuya."
"I don't know what's wrong Ryou, but I'm here now. It's alright." Jounouchi continued to whisper
soothing things to Ryou, all the while trying to figure out what had Ryou so upset. Ryou had left
his keys in the car and he'd need them since Jounouchi was going to be at work when he got
home, so he had dropped by to give them to him. Now his boyfriend was trembling in his arms. It
wasn't just that he had startled him, something else had happened.
Jounouchi's eyes fell on the still dangling receiver and it clicked.
"Who was on the phone Ryou?" Jounouchi's voice was extremely serious, especially for the
normally carefree blond.
Ryou tensed. He didn't want to tell Jounouchi what had happened, didn't want the older boy to
worry about him. He could handle this himself...somehow.
"No one." Ryou slowly pushed out of his embrace and put on a smile. "You just really scared me
is all."
Jounouchi eyed him skeptically. Ryou seemed to be ok now, but just moments ago he had been
scared. Jounouchi wanted to question him further, but knew that if Ryou wanted him to know, he
would tell him.
"Alright then. Here, you forgot these," Jounouchi said, holding out Ryou's keys.
Ryou had to fight to keep his hand from shaking as he took the keys. "Thanks."
"Not a problem. Don't forget, Honda's picking you up tonight. Don't let him talk you into
anything stupid on the way home." Jounouchi flashed him a smile and was turning to leave when
he heard Ryou's teasing response.
"Don't worry, he saves all his stupid ideas for when you're around. You're the only one he can
ever talk into going along with them."
Jounouchi stuck his tongue out at Ryou over his shoulder and was delighted to hear his familiar
laugh. It wasn't like he and Honda always did stupid things, they would have made it over that
electric fence if they had just a little bit more speed after all.
Once Jounouchi was gone, Ryou finally hung up the phone and headed out to start his shift. His
composure left him though as he spotted a familiar blond at table 17, black band prominently
displayed on his left middle finger. Ryou froze.
It was the handsome man from the other day. Why was he back? Wasn't it enough that he'd had to
deal with that phone call, why this guy too? Ryou thoughts became panicky as he realized that the
man was smiling suggestively at him. The whole situation was unnerving.
A flash of red on the other side of the dining area caught his attention. Perfect.
Brenda was flirting shamelessly with a table of rich looking businessmen when Ryou tapped her
on the shoulder. She spun around and didn't even try to hide the resentment in her eyes when she
saw that it was Ryou who was bothering her.
"What?" she asked, clearly annoyed.
"I, I was just wondering, um, if you'd cover table 17 for me?"
Brenda looked over at the table in question, then back at Ryou.
"What's wrong, I thought you liked blonds?"
Ryou felt his cheeks heat up at her not so subtle comment.
"It's not that Brenda," Ryou mumbled, eyes locked on the floor. "He's one of the big tippers, and I
just thought you might like the chance to wait on him is all."
Brenda seemed to light up at this news. "Sure sweety, I'd be happy to take him for you."
Ryou smiled at her and felt immensely relieved. Thanking Brenda profusely, he headed over to
another table in his section.
The rest of his shift went without incident, and as he went to punch out. He was almost out the
door, when he heard Brenda's shrill voice calling out to him.
"Ryou!"
He turned just as she caught up with him.
"Got busy earlier, forgot to give you this," she gasped. Apparently the short run was too much for
her. Then again, Ryou did notice she took a fair share of cigarette breaks every shift.
Ryou took the business card she held out to him and didn't need to look down at it to know what
is was and where she'd gotten it from.
Brenda was smiling at him dumbly. "I guess maybe that really was Leland Markus on the phone
earlier."
Ryou started. "Why do you say that?"
"Well honey, that's a business card for If Only, Leland Markus' nightclub. They say it's nearly
impossible to get in. Don't tell me you don't recognize the name Leland Markus?" Brenda
explained all thi if if was common knowledge and Ryou was some sort of idiot for not knowing.
"What else do you know about him?"Ryou asked. If that really had been Leland on the phone
earlier, Ryou wanted to know more about him. It didn't seem fair that Leland claimed to know so
much about him, but Ryou didn't know a damn thing.
Brenda shifted her weight. "He's a pretty mysterious guy. No one really knows what he looks like.
What is known, is that he owns the half of Domino that Kaiba Corp doesn't. He's also rumored to
be involved in some pretty shady business. Nothing's ever been proven; witns als always seem to
disappear or stop cooperating. Recently people have been saying he has some sort of personal
connection with the new chief of police. He's very rich, very powerful, and very secretive,"
Brenda finished with a smug look or far face.
"Oh." Ryou really couldn't think of anything else to say.
"Anyway, it seems doubtful he would be calling you if you don't even know who he is. It was
probably just one of your friends playing a stupid joke," Brenda said shaking her head in
disapproval. She then abruptly left without so much as saying goodbye to Ryou.
Ryou filed away the information Brenda had given him for later consideration, and headed out to
the parking lot behind Hannah's. As expected, Honda was waiting for him on his motorcycle and
spotting the white-haired teen, waved him over.
"Here put this on," Honda instructed handing him a helmet. "Jounouchi would kill me if I didn't
get you home in one piece."
Ryou smiled politely and put the helmet on. He climbed on behind Honda and gripped him tightly
as they took off. He never did feel very sturdy on motorcycles. Still, he was grateful that Honda
was generous enough to drive him home when Jounouchi couldn't. Walking home in the dark was
not something Ryou even considered an option.
Pulling out of the lot, neither boy noticed the blond seated in a black Mercedes. The man watched
the boys leave before putting down the video camera he had been filming them with. He started
the car and headed across town intending to deliver the footage to his boss. After all, Mr. Markus
would want a glimpse of his white-haired beauty as soon as possible.
Notes from Jade: Boy, I was kinda slow about getting this out huh? It's just that I had to fly into
NYC for a 9/11 memorial and then mom almost got held for contempt of court and while she was
still pissed off at the judge, she went out and bought me yet another cat. This time it was a
beautiful calico named Natalie. I've been busy trying to get her to adjust to all the other cats and
dogs I have. I had a bit of writers block about midway through this one, but I can't sleep so
instead I sat my procrastinating butt down and finished writing this. Anyway, the 18th will mark
the three year anniversary of my boyfriends murder(between losing two cousins in 9/11 and then
my Michael a week later 2001 was a hard year, hence why I still spend the month of September
heavy medicated) so I might be a little slow on the next update too.
