Sins of the Flesh
- 03 -
Bakura slammed the
door to the rather austere office as he entered. Kaiba was behind his desk, and
didn’t even look.
“Whatever you
want, you’re fired unless you give me a wonderful explanation.” His gaze stayed
focused on the computer screen.
Bakura slammed the
pregnancy test down on the desk and stood there, leaning on it, glaring at
Kaiba. The brunet flinched and looked up at him. “What the hell is this?” the
thief demanded.
“I think you
know…” Kaiba said quietly, looking away from him and back toward the computer.
His hands were trembling very slightly, Bakura noticed with satisfaction.
Apparently, he didn’t like the thought of being alone in his office with him…
Bakura himself, understandably, did like that idea. But no – he couldn’t
take advantage of the situation… Because Ryou would ‘never forgive him’…
Angrily, he grabbed Kaiba’s face and made him meet his eyes.
“I know perfectly
well what this is, you jackass, and I want to know what you think you’re pulling,
because it sure as hell sounds to me as though you’re trying to say you’re
going to have a kid.”
Kaiba pulled his
head away and looked back at the computer screen. “I am…”
Bakura hit him,
making him nearly fall to the floor. “You’re either out of your fucking mind,
or you’re the world’s biggest idiot!” Kaiba looked at him with his eyes rather
larger than normal. “I may have been living in a gold ring for three thousand
years, but even I know that guys don’t have kids – and last time I
checked, which was about two weeks ago, you were a guy. Believe me, it
would have been rather easier if you weren’t.” He glared coldly at him, daring
him to bullshit him some more. “So I think you’d better tell me exactly what’s
going on here.”
Kaiba looked at
him for a moment, then looked away. “I don’t have to tell you anything. If you
don’t believe me, fine. Like I fucking care. Just go away.”
Bakura grabbed his
hair and made him look at him again. “I want a fucking explanation, Kaiba.”
Kaiba grabbed his
arm and twisted to throw him to the floor. “Get out. Now. I never want to see
you again. I won’t be in school for about nine months, but you know where to
find me if you want me to kick you out again.” He pressed a button on his desk,
presumably to call security.
Bakura grabbed his
arm and wrenched him away from the desk, using his purely superior physical
strength to throw him to the floor against a wall. “Believe me, I’ll leave on
my own once I have an explanation. Give me one.” He crouched in front of Kaiba
as the latter sat up against the wall, trapped, and smirked coldly.
Kaiba watched the
smirk without expression. “You want to know?” he said quietly. “Fine. For the
first twelve years of my life, I was a girl.”
The white-haired spirit
growled and hit him. “Not only is that the stupidest lie I’ve ever heard anyone
tell, but it wouldn’t even explain anything if it were true!”
There was a bitter
laugh. “You’re the first person I’ve ever told that, and you don’t believe me…”
He shook his head slightly and looked back. “It’s the truth,” he said quietly.
“My stepfather adopted us because I forced his hand, and he must not have
looked at the papers too closely when he was signing them, because he didn’t
realize I was a girl until the night after we went home with him.” He didn’t
move, just sat there on the floor, and Bakura frowned.
“How the hell do
you expect me to believe that?” he demanded. “That’s not an easy thing to
miss.”
Kaiba suddenly
seemed to get his strength back and shoved him away, standing up and leaning on
the window. “There’s such a thing as a tomboy, baka. I was one. I dressed and
acted like a boy, and I was damned good at it. Believable.” He laughed again.
“Too believable. He never would have played that game of chess if he’d realized
his opponent was a twelve-year-old girl. I never wore a dress since I was
allowed to pick out my own clothes, but maybe I should have that day…”
He stood, looking
out the window, his hands cupping his elbows, apparently lost in the past.
Looking at his back, Bakura tried to detect any sign of effeminacy, anything at
all that told him he might once have been a little girl, and found none.
“Bullshit,” he said.
Kaiba turned
around and glared at him. “Why can’t you believe it?” he demanded.
“There’s no
fucking way you were ever a girl, Kaiba. It’s been, what, six years? You’d
still act like a girl, at least a little. Just some habits or something, how
you stood, your handwriting – anything. You don’t. I don’t know what you’re
playing at, but you are so full of shit…”
“Anything that
would have shown that I was a girl was trained out if me. If I stood wrong, I
was beaten. If I sat wrong, I was beaten. My handwriting naturally changed from
having to handle business documents – it has to be neat and concise, and that’s
how it is. I don’t write by hand much anyway. Using the wrong words or the
wrong tone of voice – most people wouldn’t have noticed, but he did, and that
was more cause for punishment. I have scars from the last time I giggled.” Kaiba
bored into him with his cold blue eyes, and Bakura snorted just to keep from
being forced to believe him.
“You bald-faced
lying motherfucker.” He glared back. “And, assuming you’re telling the truth,
it explains nothing. But that doesn’t matter, because there is no possible way
what you’re saying can be true. I don’t know what you hope to gain by lying,
but it’s not going to work.”
Kaiba stared at
him for a moment, then went back to his computer. “My name is Seto Tenshi
Kazesenshi,” he said as he typed and clicked, obviously searching for
something. “Or it was before I was made a Kaiba.” Bakura said nothing. ‘Tenshi’
was not generally the name one would give a boy… but he didn’t comment on it.
Damn him – he was almost believing this shit!
Kaiba stopped and
turned the computer monitor around. “Read that.”
Bakura scowled and
read it. It was a record of the birth of someone named, as Kaiba had said, Seto
Tenshi Kazesenshi, from the hospital in Domino where she had been born. Yes,
she – it said, very clearly, that the baby had been female.
“You did that just
now,” Bakura said dismissively. “You can do anything with a computer – you
won’t convince me that way.”
Kaiba scowled,
looking frustrated. “How can I convince you?”
Bakura laughed.
“Why the hell would you want to convince me that you used to be a girl, anyway?
So I feel bad about what I did, taking advantage of a poor innocent little girl
like that? So you feel better about having lost to me? Whatever, asshole.” He
smirked and turned away. “Maybe if you acted like a girl, I’d believe you… or
maybe I’m just saying that to humiliate you. Why don’t you try it to see
which?” He laughed aloud as he walked out of the room.
“Get out,” Ryou
said as his yami opened the door. “I told you to apologize, and I know you
didn’t. Until you tell him you’re sorry and make him believe it enough that he
forgives you, you’re not welcome here.”
Bakura growled.
“You have no authority over me, yadonushi, and I just spent the last hour
arguing with the world’s biggest idiot or most deluded person ever – I don’t
have to do a damn thing you tell me, and I’m not in the mood to listen right
now.” He sprawled in a chair across from Ryou.
“Bakura, get out,”
the normally gentle Brit said with ice in his voice. “I may or may not be able
to make you on my own, but I know Yami can, and I’ll call him if I have to. He
won’t be very happy when he hears what you did.”
Bakura sneered at
him. “What makes you think he gives a damn about what I do?”
“He feels very
protective of Kaiba-kun because of who he was in his past life,” Ryou said. “If
he finds out that you raped him like that…”
Bakura sneered,
but sat up. “Fine, I’m leaving. Give me money.”
“No.” Ryou shook
his head.
“Listen,
yadonushi… Give me money to stay someplace before I have to get it in one of
those illegal ways you care so much about. Or go back to your precious
Kaiba-kun and get it from him.”
“I can’t,” Ryou
said. “You already spent it all – we’re broke until the end of the month.”
Bakura scowled and
stood up. “Fine then. I’m sure Kaiba will be more than happy to give me money
in exchange for leaving him alone.” He slammed the door as he left.
Despite his
threats, however, he went nowhere near Kaiba – mostly because he had exactly no
wish to argue with the delusional weirdo anyway. He found himself standing
across the street from a long series of low buildings with a low wall around
them, watching a couple dozen kids play through the gateless entryway. The Domino City
Orphanage. Cheery place.
He stepped into
the yard, steering around a couple of brats who chased each other across his
path. He wandered for a little while, before he found some old guy looking
after the kids.
“Hey,” he said.
“You been working here for more than six years?”
The man put a
band-aid on a little girl’s skinned knee and looked up at him. “Yes I have.
Why? Are you looking for someone?”
“Yeah…” Bakura
said, struck by a sudden inspiration. “Yeah, I’m looking for a little girl
named Seto Tenshi Kazesenshi. Was she here? Would’ve been a while ago… had a
little kid with her, her brother. Seen ‘em?”
The man stood
warily and looked at him for a moment, then nodded and led him toward an
office. He shut the door behind Bakura and gestured for him to sit down; Bakura
chose to lean against the door instead.
“What do you
know?” the man asked. “And how do you know it?”
“I was talking
with a certain friend of mine – Seto Kaiba. He told me an interesting story and
I wanted to know if it was true.” He even managed to get the word friend out
without laughing or choking.
“What did… he tell
you?”
The tiny
hesitation before the word ‘he’ did not go unnoticed. “He said he used to be
different.”
The man sighed.
“All right, I think we can cut through all the double-talk… we’re obviously
speaking about the same person. Yes, when Seto came here as a ten year old, he
was a girl. She and her brother were adopted by Gozaburo Kaiba when she was
twelve, and the next time she reappeared, she was fourteen and a ‘he’.
Something obviously happened. Maybe it was just Kaiba’s money that happened.”
Bakura said
nothing. So… Kaiba had been telling the truth…
“Thanks,” he said
shortly.
The man saw that
he was about to leave and stalled him. “You realize, you can’t tell anyone… I
only revealed this to you because you obviously already knew. It could hurt him
greatly if anyone else found out.”
“I know,” Bakura
said, and suppressed a smile – it would have just scared the guy. He pulled the
door open and vanished through it, winding his way through the kids playing and
back to the street. So… Kaiba was telling the truth. He really had been a girl
when he was younger… which, as far as he could tell, still had nothing
to do with that stupid-
He paused, as he
had just put his hand in his pocket, and realized what he still had there. Damn
it, there was no way Kaiba was pregnant! The very idea of it was pissing him
off again – what the hell was Kaiba trying to pull here? Was he just trying to
take advantage of it? So what, he used to be a girl, and now he obviously
wasn’t – whatever he was trying to do, it wasn’t going to work.
Seto was holding
his head in his hands, his eyes closed, actually crying a little. No one was
around – he never allowed anyone to see him cry. Not even Mokuba. He did it a
lot more than people would have guessed, however… and right now, he felt he had
a very good reason. Every time he thought of what that stupid test had told him
he was just overwhelmed with the enormity of his situation. There was no way
he’d be able to hide it for more than a few months, and then everything would
come out… Being gay was bad enough for business, and nobody even knew that yet…
being both gay and transgender… and some freak like he was… He’d go bankrupt in
a month. He didn’t know what he was going to do…
The door was
slammed open once again, and he was instantly on his feet, wiping his eyes with
his sleeve and yelling. “God damn you, knock!”
Bakura just shoved
him backward so that he sat down again and shoved some probably very important
papers out of the way so that he could sit on the desk. “Fine, you little
weirdo, you were a girl. That doesn’t explain any of this now, and I want an
explanation, before I get really pissed off.”
Seto just looked
at him a little angrily. “What made you decide to believe me now?”
“I went to your
orphanage, and the guy told me you were a girl when you were there.”
“I could have paid
him to say that.”
“But since you
just told me that, I don’t think you did. Now tell me what I want to know.”
Seto finally
looked away from him. “Which is what, exactly?”
“First off, how
did you end up being a guy? He trained you not to be a girl, and you just went
with it, or what?”
Seto glared at
him. “You really are incredibly dense, you know that? He didn’t just train me
to be a boy – he made me get the operations so that I was one.”
Bakura, for once,
was silent, frowning a little. For a moment, that just didn’t compute. He was
familiar with the idea of people choosing to do that to themselves, but forcing
it on someone else… he just couldn’t fit his mind around it for a little while.
Finally, he had to say something, because someone couldn’t tell you something
like that and then you just sit there staring at him. “You’re serious?” he
asked.
“Of course I’m
fucking serious!” Seto unexpectedly exploded. “What do you think, I’m making
this up to make myself sound good?”
“Why the hell did
you let him do that?”
“I was a twelve
year old girl, Bakura. I had no power. There was no ‘letting’ him do
anything – I had no choice. I find myself in that situation a
lot.”
Incredibly, that
made Bakura feel defensive. “Shove it, freak. I’m not here to apologize – I’m
here because I still don’t know what the hell you meant. Sex change – got
that part. That still doesn’t mean a guy can get pregnant.”
“It does if the
doctors are skilled enough and the person paying for it is sadistic enough,”
Seto muttered, holding his head again with his elbows on the desk.
“You mean you
can?”
Seto nodded
silently.
“You bullshitting
me again.”
“There were
several extra operations, and the hormone therapy wasn’t completed. You don’t
want to know the details, but suffice it to say that I have all the strictly
necessary parts to bear children…”
Bakura frowned
again. “How do you know that? He doesn’t sound like he’d’ve told you what he
did.”
Seto was silent
for a moment, staring down at his desk. Then he spoke up quietly – he had
nothing to hide anymore. If Bakura wanted the whole dirty story, he’d get it.
“It happened once before,” he nearly whispered.
“Shit…” Bakura
said. “You mean you’ve got some weird bastard kid running around out there?
Player, huh? Or just a whore?” He smirked.
Seto stood up and
punched him, making him fall off the desk and to the floor. “Don’t say that …”
he ground out. “Don’t you ever say that – only two people have ever had sex
with me, and they both raped me – I am not a whore!” Looking up at him, Bakura
could swear he saw tears in his eyes, and was certain that he was trembling.
That was more than just a normal insult – that had touched a nerve, it was
obvious. Bakura took a stab in the dark and guessed that once upon a time his
stepfather had called him the same thing – probably as or after he raped him.
“Fine,” he said,
getting off the floor. “You’re not a whore – just an innocent victim of the
world.” He sat on the desk again, and Seto ground his teeth slightly and sat as
well, taking his head back in his hands as the anger faded as abruptly as it
had come. “But you didn’t answer my question – did you have a kid already?”
“No,” he said, not
looking up. “I think he wanted the kid, but he wouldn’t stop… beating me…
raping me… eventually I miscarried…”
“So I was right –
it was him,” Bakura said inappropriately triumphantly. “Did he do it just so
he’d have a little boy to fuck?”
Seto shook his
head. “He hated gays…” he said quietly. “It didn’t count if they were kids,
though… or maybe if they used to be girls… I don’t know. It just didn’t count
with me. He’d still tell you he wasn’t gay, and you’d believe him… I’d believe
him. I think he just hated me, and he had to punish me every way he knew how…”
“Somehow, I don’t
think he hated you. People don’t hate little girls.”
“I beat him – of course
he hated me. He couldn’t stand the sight of me. I forced his hand, beat him at
his own game – literally – and then I fooled him when he thought I was a boy.
He wanted to ruin me… God, he did ruin me…” His hands tightened on his
head.
“So, you’re being
absolutely serious,” Bakura said, for the most part ignoring Seto’s
semi-breakdown. “You’re pregnant. With my kid.”
“No one else has
raped me in the last four years.”
“Jackass.”
He glared at Seto. “I had no idea this was going to happen, and I think I might
have been more careful if I did, so lay off.”
“What,”
Seto asked sneeringly, though his face retained its blank expression, “you
would’ve used a condom as you raped me?”
Bakura
resisted the urge to hit him – resisted, for once, instead of gave in to.
“Probably,” he sneered in return. “I don’t want any more little bastard Kaibas
running around than necessary.”
“I’m sure the
world agrees,” Seto said. “Too bad for you all.”
“Yeah,” Bakura
said dryly. “Poor us.” He picked up a paperweight and looked inside the clear
glass. Strange, he hadn’t noticed last time… It was a flower. It looked like a
half-bloomed rose.
“Will you go now?”
Seto asked quietly. “Now that you know every single one of my dirty little
secrets?”
“I don’t think
so,” Bakura said, and settled comfortably on the desk. “Ryou said I couldn’t
come home until you forgave me, and I’m broke, so I think I’ll just hang out
here for a while.”
“God damn you, get
out!” Seto yelled. “You already ruined my life – I don’t want you here!”
The thief snorted.
“Don’t be so dramatic, Kaiba. Just get an abortion and get on with your
wonderful little life.”
“I can’t,”
Seto said, and dropped his head again. “The doctors who did this to me told me…
No one’s ever tried anything like this… I’d probably die if they did. And as
much as my life sucks right now… I don’t want to die at some doctor’s
hands…”
Bakura just looked
at him. “Guess you’re stuck with it, then. Sure, it’s a little inconvenient,
but how, precisely, does this ruin your life? Most people don’t think as having
a baby in such a negative light.”
“Most people are
not eighteen-year-old men with multi-billion-dollar companies to run and
a media that pries incessantly into their personal lives…” He shook his head.
“I’m ruined. Utterly. Being gay – or being seen as gay, because of you, even if
I’m not – would be bad enough… but they’ll have to find out that I was born a
girl, and then my business will go down the drains… and when they learn about
the baby…” He clenched his head in his hands, and began shaking slightly.
Bakura frowned.
“Kaiba… are you crying?”
Seto looked up at
him, and he was indeed. “Yes,” he said angrily. “Yes, I’m crying, and why
shouldn’t I? My life is ruined. I’m going to lose my business, my money,
my house… maybe even my brother. Because of you.” He turned his face
back to the desk, no longer willing to look at Bakura. “I think I’ll be crying
a lot for the next few months…”
Bakura stood up,
disconcerted but hiding it well. “Whatever. If it helps, I never meant to ruin
your life. Just teach you not to be such an ass.” He shrugged. “Looks like that
got through, so I’m not going to bother you again.” Seto said nothing, and
Bakura turned his back. He paused as he reached the door, though, and turned
back.
“So… are you?” he
asked. Kaiba only sat there crying silently, and he left, trying to get that
picture out of his mind.
“Before you say
anything, Ryou, no, I didn’t apologize, and he didn’t forgive me, but I don’t
think that’s much of an issue right now, with what he told me.” He sprawled in
a chair and scowled at the wall. Ryou said nothing and let him stay.
