Title: Our Dark Secrets
Author: Reyn
Disclaimer: I do not own YuGiOh. If I did, there
would be a lot more romance and a lot less dueling. And Anzu
would be totally crushed in the manga cuz Yami would only have eyes for
Yugi! HA! Take that Anzu!!
Author’s Note: I’m not sure where I pulled this from…I think it all
developed from the idea of Joey falling from a window three stories up, which I
thought was pretty funny.

Summary: Be careful when you try to trick your heart and focus
your desires on something else, because your heart might just come around and
bite you in the butt.
Pairing: Seto/Joey
Warnings: Unrequited feelings, and I have a tendency to
crossover English names and Japanese names…
PRESS CONFERENCE
CONFESSIONS
While fixing his tie in the mirror, Seto Kaiba mentally went over
the main points he wanted to make in today’s press conference. Unfortunately,
due to the importance of today’s public address, the CEO had to leave time open
at the end for the reporters to ask questions.
Questions that
could easily be the downfall of Kaiba Corp if answered wrongly.
“Mr. Kaiba.”
Seto turned, indicating to the
Security Officer to continue.
“We have a disturbance at the
front door, sir.”
“Seto!” Mokuba burst in the room. “You won’t believe who’s outside
demanding to be let in!”
“Is it that Flab Snooper woman?”
Seto sneered, his obvious disdain for the reporter creeping through his voice.
“You mean Fran Schooner?” Mokuba
clarified.
“Whatever.”
The younger Kaiba rolled his
eyes. “No, it’s not her. We took care of her a while ago. It’s-”
“Good,” Seto interrupted, glancing
once more in the mirror to make sure his appearance was in order. “I made the
rules perfectly clear, earlier. No ticket, no entry, no exceptions.”
“But Big
Brother!”
“No
exceptions, Mokuba. Tonight needs
to run as smoothly as possible.” With that, Seto left the room.
Mokuba groaned as he watched his
older brother leave, knowing that tonight would probably be anything
but smooth.
Doodle-eh-doo! Doodle-eh-doo! Doodle-eh-doo!
“-I will
personally secure this latest line against all types of virus attacks, as well as double checking the
mainframe every week to make sure no outside attacks have been attempted. This
will help to guarantee the safety of all users who log on to Kaiba Corp’s VR world.
On top of that, I will have several teams on the inside 24/7 to take care of
any technical difficulties that…may…” Seto trailed off as his attention was
distracted by a sudden movement.
High above the crowd, a good
thirty feet or so up, a window was being pulled open. Frowning, Seto wondered
why the hell Security wasn’t watching the ground below the windows when
a figure suddenly fell from the opening,
crash landing in the back of the
room with a loud ‘oof!’
Seto couldn’t be too sure, but
he thought he saw a mop of golden hair on the person.
Noticing several reporters
turning their heads to see what was holding the CEO’s attention, Seto cleared
his throat. “Are there any questions?”
Instantly, the room filled with
shouts of “Mr. Kaiba!”, “Sacho!”, and “Kaiba-sama!” Suddenly one reporter stood up above the rest.
“Kaiba, is it true that you’re
finally willin’ ta admit da greatness of several
contending duelists? Like one Joseph Wheeler, for example?”
Seto mentally groaned. If the
obviously fake, oversized mustache and glasses didn’t give him away, the accent
certainly did.
“What are you doing here,
Wheeler?” Seto asked in a tired voice, his eyes closing in annoyance as a finely manicured hand rested on the podium,
his other hand’s fingers coming to pinch the bridge of his nose.
The man sweat dropped. “I don’t
know what you’re talking about. My name is Mr.…Smith!
But I’ll retract my question anyway.”
The man disappeared back into
the mob and the crowd started firing questions at him once again.
“Mr. Kaiba, is it true that an
anonymous group attempted to sabotage your VR world? Is that the reason for all
these extra security measures? And who’s to say they won’t attack again?”
Seto’s eyes narrowed. “The group
wasn’t anonymous. I know exactly who each and every one of those people were and I have dealt with them all accordingly. The extra
security measures are to ensure nothing like that will ever happen again. To
help further dissuade any bored hackers out there, if the system ever is
broached, I will be the one in charge of tracking them down, and not only will
they be facing a hefty fine, but they will be facing a minimum of eight years
of jail time as well.”
Flashes momentarily blinded him
as cameras went off and more questions were fired.
“Mr. Kaiba, what about the
dangers of being ‘inside’ if your pod shuts-?”
“Kaiba!” this time it was a
dress and one of the worst wigs Seto ever had the misfortune of laying eyes upon. “Why don’t ya give us all some insight on your love life, if ya even have one, dat is. Are you
really looking for love, or are ya jest a
cold-hearted bastard who enjoys breaking young girls’ hearts?!”
The crowd remained silent,
eagerly awaiting the response.
“Wheeler, I really don’t have
time for your antics right now,” Seto sighed. “Will someone get her-him out of here?”
“Say what?!” the ‘lady’
exclaimed as Security began rushing over, before ‘she’ disappeared back into
the crowd.
Two seconds later a
frazzled-looking Joey Wheeler (in his regular street attire) jumped on the
stage. “Now listen here, you asshole! What’s so hard about answering da question!”
“Wheeler, in case you haven’t
noticed, this is a news media press conference about the latest attraction from
Kaiba Corp, not some teeny bopper magazine interview about my personal life.”
“Well I think it’s high time you
gave da world some insight on your personal life and
signed up for some of those magazine interviews!” Joey demanded.
Seto could see where this was going.
“This is neither the time nor the place to-”
“If this isn’t then when is?!
You’ve been avoiding me, Kaiba, and I ain’t gonna sit
back and take it anymore!” Joey shouted as he rushed forward and grabbed the
CEO by the front of his suit. “What da hell have you
got against love, huh?!”
The sound of microphone feedback
caused Joey to freeze before slowly turning his head to see the room packed
with the faces of anxious and shocked reporters. Suddenly the cameras started
flashing crazier than before as nearly everyone whipped out their cell phones,
demanding a change in the headlines.
“Err…whoops?”
Seto sighed and reached under
the pandemonium to switch off the power to the numerous microphones sitting on
the stand. He then grabbed Wheeler by the back of the collar and hauled him off
stage, telling Mokuba to take over and fix whatever damage he could.
Seto then stormed off, refusing
to relinquish his hold on the mutt until they were back in the prep room, door
firmly shut behind him.
“Alright mutt, what the hell do
you think you’re doing?”
“‘What da
hell do I think I’m doin’? Whaddya
mean, 'What da hell do I think I’m doin’?! I’m tryin’ ta get your attention, dat’s what
da hell I think I’m doin’!”
Joey shouted.
“Well you’ve got it,” Seto said in
a dead panned voice. “You’ve also successfully ruined today’s press conference
and have quite possibly thrown my reputation away to the tabloid hounds who
won’t have to try very hard to rip my image to shreds using your outburst.”
“Grr,
don’t you dare try ta change da
subject on me, Kaiba!” Joey said, pointing an accusing finger.
Seto could already feel a
headache coming on. He now remembered why he avoided holding conversations with
the blond. His lack of intellect was staggering.
And yet…
“What do you want, Wheeler?”
“I wanna
know what’s wrong wit’ my sister! Why da hell did ya dump her, ya prick?”
“You mean besides the fact that
she’s related to you?”
Oops. Judging from the look of
hurt in his eyes and the way his whole body screamed ‘RAGE!’, that had definitely been the wrong thing to say.
Unfortunately, it was also the truth.
“You bastard! Even tho’ I didn’t like da fact dat you two were
together, I stayed outta da
picture so she could be happy! So there’s no way you can use dat excuse!”
Seto simply
stared, bored frown remaining firmly in place.
He figured the less he said the less likely Wheeler would confuse himself, so
he remained silent.
“I don’t get it. You two shoulda
been perfect together. Shizuka’s patient, sweet,
thoughtful, lovin', everything I’m not!”
And therein was the problem.
“Why’d ya
dump her? She actually saw ya as a person and
(although I can’t see why) loved ya for who ya were. Personally, all I can see ya
as is a cold, heartless dickhead, and you dumpin’ my
sister proves me right!”
Ouch. Honesty could be a real
bitch. It also told Seto that Wheeler wasn’t ready to hear the truth.
Seto turned his head away. It
looked like he was stuck playing the ‘cold heartless dickhead’ a while longer.
“What do you wantfrom me, Wheeler?”
“I want an explanation. Why’d ya break my sister’s heart? You two seemed so happy
together. And ya better have a really good reason or
I’ll punch your face in.”
For some reason, Seto doubted
any excuse he gave would be good enough to save him from a punch in the face from
the irate blond.
“I really thought she would end
up being da one for you. I mean, I swear I’ve almost
seen ya
smile when she was around.”
That was only half true. Joey
had been there as well, and those small cracks in his façade occurred when the
mutt had actually said something funny. But then, Shizuka’s
undying worship that shone through her eyes, even while laughing at her big
brother, might have played some small factor.
“Would you really have wanted your
sister in a loveless marriage?” Seto asked, turning his cold eyes to the blond.
“Eh?”
And here he was hoping for an
actual answer.
“I don’t care for Shizuka,” Seto
explained bluntly.
“You bastard!”
Okay, perhaps he was a little
too blunt, seeing as how Wheeler now had him by the front of his shirt, fist
formed and drawn back.
“Damn it,
mutt!” Seto batted the punch away and
forced Joey back by hitting him hard on the shoulder. “You of all people should
be glad we’re not together anymore!”
Despite the fact that he was
looking away, the flinch in Wheeler’s glare intrigued Seto.
“I might not like ya, Kaiba, but I do respect ya,
which I know is more than you would say for me. If there was anyone I trusted ta take good care of my baby
sister, it was you.”
Suddenly it all became clear to
Seto. The mutt was disappointed in him.
Despite his hard-driven will to
make a name for himself, Wheeler was harboring doubts that he might not
succeed. He wanted someone there to look after Shizuka in case he couldn’t.
Seto scowled, unsure of how to
react to his feelings concerning this new revelation. He wanted to laugh at
such a ridiculous thought. He wanted to yell, to demand who gave Wheeler the
right to lay such unwanted responsibilities on him. He wanted to apologize and
ask how he could make amends. He wanted to hold Joey in his arms and convince
the spirited blond of ways the two of them together could look out for
Shizuka throughout life.
Instead, Seto stood glaring at the
mutt, both boys locked in a battle of will. Not even the knock at the door was
able to break the tension.
“Err…Mr. Kaiba? Sir?” the guard
nervously asked, peeking in when he received no reply.
“Mr. Wheeler’s friends are
waiting at the front doors to uhm…escort him off the
premises.”
Seto had a feeling the guard was
terming the group’s actual words to be much nicer.
“Let them in,” Seto ordered,
refusing to end the staring contest.
The guard bowed respectfully.
“Yes, sir,” he said before leaving.
Silence reigned for a moment
longer before the CEO grew tired of the mutt’s stubbornness.
“Did you really interrupt my
press conference just to yell at me?”
“Eh…”
Seto sighed. Apparently he had.
The stupid mutt really needed to learn how to think things through before
acting.
“So, my sister’s not your type?
Well then, what exactly is your type, Mr. CEO Seto Kaiba?” Joey asked in a
sassy tone of voice that caused all traces of the earlier tension to vanish.
“What is this? A teeny bopper magazine interview?” Kaiba growled.
“Hey, I promised my baby sister dat I’d get to da bottom of this,
and I have no intention of leaving until I do. So, ya
better start dishin’ out the facts, Kaiba!”
“I’m busy running a large
corporation. I don’t have time for a ‘type’,” Kaiba answered disdainfully.
“But ya
had time for my sister,” Joey pointed out, putting a leash on his anger to let
the brunette explain.
Seto frowned. Of
all the times for the blond to be growing a brain…
There was a reason he approached
Shizuka and asked her out, but he wasn’t about to admit it to Joey. Admitting
it would require saying his true feelings out loud, and doing so would cause
them to be real, with no chance of denial, and a very large chance of rejection –
none of which Seto was ready for.
“Consider Shizuka to be an
experiment. I thought things had reached a point where I could start leading a
social life and perhaps settle down, but apparently that wasn’t the case.”
“What? You used my baby
sister?!”
“I didn’t use her, I experimented
with her.”
“You EXPERIMENTED with my BABY
sister?!?”
Oops. Bad
choice of words.
“It’s not like we did anything
like that, we just-”
“You bastard!! I wouldn’t even let Tristan OR Duke try anything wit’ her,
and you’re off EXPERIMENTING!” Joey took off his jacket and began rolling up
his sleeves. “When I’m done with you, not even Mokuba will be able to recognize
ya.”
Thankfully, Lady Luck was on
Seto’s side as the door suddenly burst open to admit Tristan and Duke who
rushed forward to restrain the blond. “Joey, what the hell has gotten into
you?”
“Let me go! Don’t you think I’m lettin’ ya get away with this,
Kaiba!! Next time I see you, your ass is mine!!” Joey hollered as he was
dragged out the door.
“One could only hope,” Seto
muttered under his breath, glaring at Yugi when the small boy looked at him
suspiciously.
“Mr. Kaiba,
would you like a restraining order to be placed on Mr. Wheeler?” the guard
asked.
Seto frowned, knowing it would
probably be the wisest thing to do for the sake of his company if nothing else,
but…
“No. He should be fine once he
cools down,” Kaiba said, watching as the struggling blond got his leg caught in
the closing elevator doors.
“Kaiba?” Yugi asked tentatively.
Seto barely spared his rival a glance. “I
don’t have time for this.”
“Oh, so you can walk out in the
middle of a press conference for Joey, but you can’t spare two minutes for
anyone else?” Yugi asked cockily.
Exactly.
“What do you want?” Seto
growled.
“If you were to at least show a
little bit of respect to Joey, or maybe sort of acknowledge his existence in a nice sort of way…he might
start coming around.”
Seto’s eyes widened as icy fear
gripped his heart at the knowledge of someone else knowing his most closely guarded
secret. But as quickly as the feeling came, it was gone; replaced by the mask
Seto was so used to wearing.
“Hn,”
was all the CEO said as he brushed past Yugi. He would have loved to deny
it, to utter the words ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about’, but they
both knew that such a denial would only make it more real, and would be just as
bad as admitting the truth.
“Hey, Seto!” Mokuba greeted as he came jogging up the hall to his older
brother. “I kind of had to tell everyone the truth about you and Shizuka. While
that did squash any tabloid-worthy rumors, it has the reporters all focused on
your love life instead of Kaiba Corp. But luckily there’s only five minutes
left, just enough time for a closing statement and not much else…”
Seto tuned his brother out as
they made their way back to the stage area. A part of him wished he hadn’t
ordered Mokuba to take over, allowing the tabloids to run away with Wheeler’s
outburst. Perhaps then, when the irate blond approached him with a fistful of
false headlines proclaiming a torrid romance between the two, he would stand a
chance…but that was just crazy talk.
Shoving such thoughts out of his
head, Seto forced away his feelings of hope and stepped back into the role of
the cold, heartless dickhead. At least with this role, he was guaranteed to
know what would happen and where life would take him. There was no need for
worry of fear or uncertainty.
Yes, the cold, heartless
dickhead would have to do for now.

End Note: Well, my beta hates (Demitria: Try
loathes, despises...) me for this, but that’s it folks! The end of this little oneshot.
I’m actually pretty proud of this one and the way it ended, simply because it
has a sort of canon feel to it overall. Plus it leaves things open in case
anyone wants to expand on it! ^_^ Remember to review if you liked it, or have
any ideas for future oneshots for me to write.
