Chapter 2

Kaiba frowned as he glanced over at the blonde teen working his way through his lunch and laughing along with his friends. Not for the first time that day, he gave serious consideration to studying his tracking program's code, line by line, to check it for malfunctions. There was no way Katsuya Jounouchi could possibly be the daring cat burglar known throughout Domino City as The Cat. Yet, according to his computer, that was indeed the case.
He absent-mindedly took a bite of his own lunch and continued to watch Jounouchi out of the corner of his eye, studying him so closely that the delicious taste of his specially catered meal was lost on him. Kaiba could have been eating stale bread and he wouldn't have noticed. He was too focused on the enigma that was before him.
If he hadn't been watching so closely, Kaiba would have missed it. For just a minute, there was a lull in the conversation and a look of sadness flickered across Jounouchi's face. It was immediately followed by a look of grim determination that made him seem somehow older and more than a little dangerous. Kaiba found himself holding his breath at the sight. He released it slowly, irritation at his overreaction flooding through him. But then something happened that wiped all other thoughts from his mind.
Jounouchi was laughing at something Yugi had said when an odd change came over him. He went quiet, leaning back in his chair with his head turned in a way that suggested he was listening to something very closely. His friends didn't seem to notice anything amiss, but Kaiba's attention was caught. He watched avidly as the blonde teen first frowned, and then looked uneasy. When the same look of determination that Jounouchi had worn earlier reappeared on his face, Kaiba was certain that something was up. Then Jounouchi leaned forward again, his expression easing as he rejoined the conversation, and Kaiba was free to study the situation as a whole.
It took him barely a second to realise who Jounouchi had been eavesdropping on. There was only one group anywhere near him. A group of girls from one of the younger grades. But what made this group particularly interesting to Kaiba was the fact that one of the girls was someone he recognised.
Sakari Kazaku was a small girl with the strange habit of dying her hair bright blue. But that wasn't what made her stand out in Kaiba's mind. The diminutive fourteen-year-old was the daughter of Nariko Kazaku, the CEO of Kazaku Industries and one of the few men in Domino who held power that rivalled Kaiba's own. He was also one of even fewer men who had earned Kaiba's respect over the years, for the way he conducted both his business and his life.
Kaiba's eyes narrowed as he thought. The Kazaku estate was a wealthy one, with security almost as tight as his own estate's. Since The Cat had apparently managed to bypass his security with ease however, a fact that continued to irritate Kaiba, he'd no doubt have just as easy a time with intruding on the Kazaku estate. But there was something else tugging at the brunette teen's memory.
He frowned and distractedly ate the remainder of his meal as he tried to recall the snippet of information that he knew he had heard, or read, about the Kazaku estate recently. The memory proved frustratingly elusive though.
Kaiba finished his meal, with no memory of exactly what he had just eaten, just as the bell for class rang. He was about to stand, when Sakari and her friends chanced to walk past him on their way to class. They were laughing and chatting and he thought nothing of it, until one of the other girls piped up. "I still can't believe your father's allowing us to sleep over after your birthday ball. That will be so cool!" The other girls giggled and nodded and then they all headed out of the room, leaving Kaiba dazed as the memory he'd been trying to summon finally deigned to make an appearance in his mind.
That weekend, Kazaku was having a ball in honour of his daughter's birthday. Kaiba vaguely recalled being invited to it during a business luncheon he'd attended a few weeks earlier. He'd politely declined, stating a previous engagement for that evening, but he could still recall the details. The ball was to start that Saturday night at six o'clock.
As Kaiba strode along the hallway to his first class of the afternoon, he suddenly realised something that made him stop in his tracks. Seeing the odd looks he was getting, he scowled at the nosy students and continued on his way, forcing himself to concentrate on where he was going. Only when he was sitting at his usual desk in the mathematics class, right up the back where he could work on his own projects without anyone bothering him, did Kaiba finally allow himself to dwell on the thought that had struck him in the hallway with all the force of a runaway train.
From past experience, he knew how difficult it was to maintain a high level of security during a private function. It was one of the reasons why he never hosted any event at his estate. Keeping an eye on every guest from the moment they arrived to the moment they left was a logistical nightmare of monumental proportions. Not to mention the fact that it was all too easy for someone to claim to be a guest and get onto the grounds, only to 'disappear' before they had to show their invitation to anyone. Kaiba had lost track of the number of times he'd heard of journalists getting information, and even photographs, in such a way.
Which made an event such as the Kazaku ball a perfect opportunity for a daring criminal, such as The Cat, to strike.
The Kazaku's were a well-known, wealthy family who lived in a mansion only slightly smaller than his own home. This ball wouldn't be a big enough event to warrant them going to extremes over the security. It would most likely simply stretch the existing arrangements. If there was anything additional, it would probably come in the form of hired guards or extra security measures, such as locking rooms that would not be in use during the night. That would stop any wayward guests, but it would be useless against a determined thief.
The more Kaiba thought about it, the more certain he became that The Cat would make an appearance at the ball.
It also explained Jounouchi's interest in the conversation at lunchtime. Since it was fairly obvious that the group had been talking about the ball, there was no telling what sort of useful information he might have gained.
Although... Kaiba still didn't want to believe that the blonde teen he had bickered with since their first meeting several months earlier and The Cat were one and the same. If they were... It would mean that all of his preconceptions about Katsuya Jounouchi had been completely wrong.
Seto Kaiba was *never* wrong.
Scowling at the thought, Kaiba set up his laptop and began working on finding out for certain, one way or the other.

Saturday night brought clear skies lit by a three-quarter moon.
By ten o'clock, Sakari Kazaku's birthday ball was in full swing and the sound of music could be heard all the way to the high wall that bordered the estate on all sides. It could also be heard in the little alley that ran behind the estate, giving the servants and delivery drivers access to the rear entrance of the mansion.
A shadow moved at the end of the alleyway. It was the merest flicker of movement, easily missed unless it was expected and watched for. It came again, further along the alley, and then a third time, this time accompanied by the sound of a soft footfall as it moved swiftly across the alley to the small door that was the rear entrance of the Kazaku Estate. Then came a series of soft sounds, followed by a click that sounded overly loud in the silent alleyway. The rear door began to open.
The sudden brightness of the flashlight's beam caused the figure at the door to tense before whirling around with a gasp. The eyes, wide with shock, immediately squinted as the figure's hand rose to shield them. But the momentary glance was enough to confirm that the eyes were the deep brown of maple syrup, just as Mokuba had said.
Kaiba moved from the shadows where he'd been waiting patiently for this moment for the past three hours. His cold sapphire eyes narrowed and he frowned as he took in the figure standing before him, cringing from the light.
Scuffed black sneakers, black sweatpants and a black hooded sweatshirt combined with a simple black cardboard mask to render the figure invisible against the shadows in the night. With the concealing shadows stripped away by the powerful flashlight in Kaiba's hand though, the figure was revealed in full detail. Those details looked rather shabby.
Judging from the way he was trembling, the figure was also very afraid.
Kaiba moved quickly, striding forward while the figure was still too stunned by his sudden capture to move. With a quick grab and tug, the hood of the sweatshirt was pulled aside. The mass of tousled hair revealed was the colour of honey-glazed corn, just as he had known it would be. Scowling, Kaiba snatched off the mask, revealing a face that was as familiar to him as his own, although he'd never before seen it with such a frightened, almost timid expression. His lip curled in contempt.
"Katsuya Jounouchi. So The Cat has finally been unmasked."
