SUMMARY: Mokuba makes an effort to combine his public and
private love lives and help his brother at the same time, while trying to keep
two boyfriends under one roof… A recipe for disaster? Perhaps.
Otogi grinned and pulled his
young lover close, attacking his neck playfully. Mokuba giggled and gently
pushed him away. “Come on,” he said, laughing. “Gah, you’re insatiable.”
Otogi grinned. “I like living
here with you, Moki,” he said, pulling him closer again. Mokuba smiled as he
went on. “It’s just about like living alone with you… If you didn’t go check up
on your brother every couple of days, I’d almost forget he was here.” He tried
to kiss him again, but Mokuba frowned.
“You would?”
He shrugged. “Yeah, probably. I haven’t
seen him in over a week, and that was just in passing when he was going back to
his room. He’s kind of like a cat in a big house, when you know you have one
but you never see it unless it comes out for food…”
Mokuba sighed and pulled away,
sinking down in a chair, and Otogi let him go. “You’re still worried about
him?”
He nodded. “I hadn’t realized
until you said that, but he’s getting worse. I thought you moving in would help
him… instead, he barely leaves his room anymore, to let us be alone…”
Otogi put his hands on his
shoulders and squeezed gently. “I’m sure he’ll be okay. Maybe if we just talk
to him…”
“Let me try first,” Mokuba said.
“He’ll probably just get all defensive and tight-lipped if you’re there…” He
sighed again and pushed himself out of the chair, and leaned over to kiss
Otogi. “Thank you.”
He just smiled a little and
watched Mokuba walk away, sitting down in front of the TV to wait.
Mokuba knocked lightly on Seto’s
door and went in without waiting for a response. Seto was sitting stiffly at
his desk, fingers flying over the keys on his laptop, the only light in the
room coming from the computer screen. Mokuba smiled a little and closed the
curtains on the dark window, placing one arm around his brother’s shoulders and
flicking on the lamp beside the computer, earning nothing more than a slight,
startled wince.
“You’re going to hurt your eyes
further,” he chided gently. “Where are your glasses? You know you’re supposed
to wear them when you’re staring at the computer.”
“I don’t need them,” Seto said.
Mokuba just smiled slightly and dug around on the desk until he found them, a
slim, black-rimmed pair of indifferently cared for spectacles, and slid them
onto his face. Seto paused his typing and shook his head slightly, repositioning
them with one hand.
“That’ll teach you not to turn a
light on,” Mokuba commented, and kissed him lightly. Seto rolled his eyes a
little and went back to his computer.
Mokuba stood there and watched
him for a moment. “Have you been working all day?” he finally asked. Seto just
nodded, and he patted his shoulders. “Time for a break, Seto.”
Seto glanced up and raised an
eyebrow. Mokuba smiled slightly at him. “Ryuu and I are both downstairs. Why
don’t you join us?”
Seto sighed, only barely, and
turned his eyes back to the computer. “You still haven’t told him…” He didn’t
sound at all surprised, or even resigned; it was just the facts. It was just
how it was.
“No,” Mokuba admitted. “I’m
sorry… I’m trying. It’s just so hard…”
“It’s been a month,” Seto noted
absently. Mokuba nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine,” Seto told him. “It’s
up to you. I really don’t care… I was just commenting.”
They were silent for a while,
save for the quiet clicking of the keys as Seto’s hands deftly moved over them.
Mokuba kept his arm wrapped around Seto’s shoulders, just watching not the
screen but him, unnoticed. He sighed slightly for the umpteenth time and began
to run his fingers through Seto’s much shorter hair. He did care, it was
obvious. And he wanted to tell Otogi, he just couldn’t bring it up… It wasn’t
an easy subject to bring up. He loved Seto, though, and he felt like he had
been neglecting him… but he couldn’t pay the kind of attention to him he needed
to without neglecting Otogi…
“Seto?” he said finally.
“Hm?”
“What happens if I can’t ever
tell him?”
“Nothing, I suppose,” Seto said
absently. “Things will just continue how they are now.”
Mokuba frowned. He couldn’t let
that happen… He kissed Seto lightly. “I’ll tell him,” he promised. “Soon.”
Seto just nodded without overtly
revealing any of his feelings on the matter. Mokuba knew he was relieved,
though, and probably hopeful… He would do it. He couldn’t let Seto keep living
like this while he lived it up with Otogi… and he wouldn’t pay attention to
Seto and ignore his other lover, either. He had to try to make this work, and
damn the consequences.
He kissed Seto’s cheek lightly
and squeezed his shoulders once before he left. Seto’s quiet typing followed
him to the hall, where it faded away as he shut the door and he entered the
world he shared with Otogi instead.
The other dark-haired young man
looked up as he came back into the room, his hand automatically hitting the
button to turn off the television as he stood. “How’d it go?”
“I tried to get him to come
downstairs. He’d rather work.” He shrugged slightly. He took a deep breath – he
had to tell him.
But then Otogi kissed him
lightly, and it just seemed too hard.
Mokuba sat quietly in the chair, his
long legs straight out in front of him and crossed at the ankles, his arms
loosely crossed over his chest, while his head hung down as though he were deep
in thought. His hair fell in a thick curtain around his face, shielding him
from the rest of the world while he argued with himself.
He had to tell Ryuu. Now. He
wouldn’t wait any longer… no more excuses. No more ‘I’ll wait until he’s
settled’, no more ‘I’ll just give them some time to get used to each other’.
They were already as used to each other as they were going to get. And Seto
hadn’t even left his room, to Mokuba’s knowledge, in a week. He had to do it.
But what if Ryuu didn’t take it
well? What if he demanded that Mokuba stop it? He couldn’t do that… not to
Seto, or himself. He would rather give up Ryuu than Seto. But he so desperately
didn’t want to give up either of them… and he was losing Seto already. He
wouldn’t let this happen. He couldn’t.
He still didn’t know how he was
going to tell him, though…
There was a light touch on his
shoulder, and he looked up quickly. Ryuu. He was here…
“Hey,” Otogi said with a smile.
“Contemplating your navel?”
Mokuba sighed a little and barely
even noticed the joke. “Can you sit down for a minute, Ryuu? I have something I
need to tell you…”
Otogi warily sat half-turned in
the chair beside him, watching him. Mokuba turned to face him, resting his
elbows on his knees and clasping his hands together between them. “What’s this
about?” Otogi asked warily.
He just shook his head a little,
not in negation but to clear it. He still had no idea what he was going to say
when he opened his mouth.
“Ryuu…” he started. “I love my
brother…”
Otogi frowned. “I now that,” he
said. “That’s only natural…”
Well, there was an opening. He
shook his head. “That’s just it, though… it isn’t. I mean…” Otogi just looked
confused, and he looked away again. “I don’t mean fraternal love, though I love
him like that too… I mean, love like you and I have. Romantic love.”
Otogi seemed frozen for a moment.
Mokuba didn’t look at him still, almost afraid to see whatever was on his face.
“I was hoping, Ryuu… that maybe you’d be with Seto as well…”
“Mokuba…” He looked up, to see
shock still written over his lover’s features. “You… and… You think you’re in love
with your brother? You have sex with him…?” Mokuba just nodded, dropping his
eyes back to his hands. “How long?”
“Almost five years,” Mokuba told
him.
“That long…”
“Don’t worry,” Mokuba said,
somewhat quietly. “It’s not like I was cheating on you with him… it’s more like
the other way around, except that he knew and he didn’t mind…”
“That’s not the point!” Otogi
said, apparently finding his emotions again, his voice filled shock and
disgust. “You can’t love you brother like that, Mokuba! It’s wrong! And
you want me to join you in this…?”
Mokuba just nodded blankly,
letting Otogi have his say.
He shook his head. “I can’t…
Gods, Moki, I love you, but this has to stop… You have to stop this with him.”
Mokuba sighed and nodded,
standing up. “I thought you might feel this way.”
Otogi watched him, still sitting.
“What are you going to do?”
“I’m sorry, Ryuuji. I can’t leave
him. I love him.”
“Then I have to leave.”
Mokuba nodded. “I know… I’m
sorry. I don’t want you to go. I love you. I love Seto too, though, and Seto
needs me… I truly am sorry it had to happen like this, Ryuu.”
Otogi was still sitting there
when he left the room.
Seto was sitting idly on his bed
with his computer when Mokuba came into the room. He stopped and looked up,
perhaps sensing something different.
“What is it?”
“I told him,” Mokuba said
blankly. He sat on the side of the bed and looked at his hands again.
Seto set the computer aside and
slid over next to him, gently putting an arm around his waist so that Mokuba could
lean his head on his shoulder. “And he rejected us utterly,” he said, not
unsympathetically, but as though he had known it was going to happen.
Mokuba just nodded, enjoying the
clean smell of his brother. “He did… he told me I’d have to stop being with you
to be with him. I told him I never would…”
Seto rubbed his hand gently down
his side. “I can’t fault you for being idealistic… but it was going to happen
this way. It couldn’t happen any other… there’s no one who’ll accept us.”
“I guess not…” Mokuba said with a
sigh. “I had to try…”
Seto kissed his forehead gently.
