Summary: Jou manages to defeat Yami who, in a fit of anger, hits him
with a mind-crush and refuses to undo its effects. This leaves Seto as the only
one who can help him, but in order to do it, Seto has to acknowledge the
memories of his ancient past that have now fully returned and that he's
refusing to accept as real.
Author’s note: Plot bunny
adopted from Storms, Memory acceptance bunny.
Though I have veered somewhat from the original concept, it was that
wonderful bunny that spawned this story.

Wide eyes darted
left and right, amazed at the opulence laid out before him. The rich, warm atmosphere of the entranceway
was a vast contrast to the cold, barren land that they had left behind. Never in his life had he seen such richness.
The furnishings were very formal, and obviously of the best quality
available. The floors were marble, as
was the wide, sweeping staircase that was the focal point of the front
hallway. As he followed Seto’s Penguin
Soldier servant up the stairs, he tried to piece together what little more he
had learned concerning his current situation.
He had thought his name was Katebet, because that’s what Seto had called
him. But, Seto’s jerk of a brother acted like he knew him as well, and he had
called him Jounouchi.
He was puzzled
about Seto, too. He could hear him, but
couldn’t see him, and yet he could feel the other’s presence as if he were
very, very close. The protective embrace that he had felt earlier had
intensified tenfold once he had taken possession of the golden rod. And, what of him? What was his relationship
with the unknown, unseen, man? He would not be at all surprised to learn that
they were very close, maybe even lovers. He certainly felt bound to Seto.
Then there was
Seto’s brother. When he had first laid eyes on him, he had felt the same rush
of emotion that he had for Seto, the same sense of well-being. He had been
~certain~ that the person standing at the top of the stairs would help him, no
questions asked. It had come as quite a
shock when not only did the brunet refuse to help, but he seemed to dislike him
very much as well, if the way that he spat out that name had meant anything.
Nor could he explain away the sense of betrayal that he had felt when the other
teen had shown no outward sign of remorse after he had almost shoved him down
the staircase. And that was another thing; he was positive that it had been
Seto that had prevented him from falling, but how could he have if Seto hadn’t
been there? It was all so confusing; he just wished that he could remember
something, anything of who he was.
His thoughts
continued on in this circular vein as the little penguin showed him into the
most lavish bedroom he was sure he’d ever been in. Jounouchi stood in the middle of the room, watching the servant
as he waddled about turning down the bed and drawing the curtains, all the
while babbling in a language that the blond did not understand. The room, though not excessively large, was
richly appointed, with a traditional styled mahogany bed and end tables
situated between two narrow floor to ceiling windows. There was a wine coloured wingback chair nestled in the left hand
corner of the room with a table and reading lamp. The only other piece of
furniture in the earth-toned room was a dresser just to the right of the
entrance to the room. Further along to
the right, on the wall opposite of the chair, were two doors; one was a closet,
the other led to a private bathroom. Jounouchi perched himself on the edge of
the bed while the penguin disappeared for a moment and then returned with a
pair of dark blue silk pyjamas—that reminded him of Seto’s stupid brother’s
eyes—for him to wear. The servant began
to prattle on again, but for the life of him Jounouchi could not understand a
word he was saying.
“He says that
you can get cleaned up and ready for bed in the bathroom. Go through the door that he is pointing at,
Katebet.”
“Oh ok… thanks
Seto,” he said, completely missing the servant’s confused look in his
direction.
“And tell him
thank you, that he can go now, and that you can manage on your own.”
Once he was
alone in the room, Jounouchi put voice to some of his questions. Where was Seto? Could Seto see him? And how
come, when Jounouchi held the rod, it actually felt as if Seto was embracing
him? Seto’s response of “I’m in the
rod” completely threw the blond for a loop.
“You’re in the rod? How do you
fit?” Jounouchi asked incredulously.
Jounouchi could
almost hear the other roll his eyes before he answered that his soul was locked
inside of it, and the only way he could get out would be for his brother to set
him free. “Your brother locked you in?”
“No, but he has
the power to get me out.”
“I knew he was a
jerk. Why won’t he help you, or
me? He doesn’t like either of us very
much, does he?”
“There are just
some things that he has to come to terms with before he can help either one of
us,” Seto chuckled wryly. “But you’re
safe at the moment, and a few more days in here won’t make much of a difference
to me. I’m sure he’ll come around soon. Why don’t you go get ready for bed?”
Jounouchi set
the rod on the bed beside him, and then got up to go to the bathroom. “Katebet, take me with you.”
“Nah, you just
want to look at me while I change,” Jounouchi said as he set the rod on the
bed, totally ignoring the priest’s panicked shouts for him to come back. The
further away from the bed that he moved the darker the room appeared, and it
was too late when he realized that Seto’s demand that he take the rod with him
was not because he wanted to spy on him in the bathroom, but because it was his
proximity to it that kept him safe. The walls of the room had melted away and
suddenly he was back where he had started. Spread out in front of him was the
very familiar, dull grey, hard cracked ground.
Frantically he searched the dark sky, hoping for any sign of Seto or his
dragons, or the luxurious room he had just been in. But, however far out on the
horizon he cast his eye, he was met with only barren land, billowing storm
clouds and that one lonely mountain far off in the distance. As the whip of the
wind stung at his eyes, his every nerve ending thrummed in trepidation, knowing
what he would find when he looked behind him. Wasting no time on cowardice, he
took a deep breath, and then spun around.
Disappointment overwhelmed him; what he had feared was a reality. Instead of Seto’s palace as he had so
desperately hoped for, eating up the landscape behind him was the great black
chasm that was the Red Eyes’ home. His eyes widened as he looked on in horrified
fascination as the truth of what he was seeing caught up with his brain. The
bits and pieces of what was left of Seto’s dragons littered the ground at the
edge of the ravine. The carnage was
fresh, the metallic scent of newly spilt blood, as opposed to the stench of
rotting flesh, assaulted his senses and great pools of sticky, wet blood had
yet to seep into the ground.
A great roar
from deep within the bowels of the ravine announced the presence of the black
dragon. With his protectors out of the
way Jounouchi was an easy target, and the great dragon emerged from his home to
once again blow fire at the blond. He was so broken up by the death of the
magnificent beasts that he barely noticed the firestorm that rained down all
around him. Jounouchi collapsed to his knees on the hard cracked ground, and
cradled the head of the dragon that had flown him to the cave in his
arms. He rocked back and forth clutching the dragon’s head to his chest,
muttering over and over, “I’m so sorry, Seto”.
As the minutes
passed, his sorrow gradually changed into a slow burn of anger, until wave
after wave of helpless rage coursed through him, bringing him to his feet.
Jounouchi reverently laid the Blue Eyes’ head on the ground, picked up a rock,
and with a roar as fierce as any dragon’s, hurled it at the attacking
beast. The rock hit its target right
between the eyes, but had no affect on the rampaging creature. As he dodged the dragon’s fire, he’d scoop
up one rock after another and hurl it skyward at the Red Eyes, screaming “you
son of a bitch” or “bastard” with each one that he threw.
Ten minutes
after he had left the sitting room, Honda and Haruka found Seto clinging to the
open door at the entrance to Jounouchi’s room.
From the bed, the rod emitted a golden arc of light out toward Jounouchi, but it couldn’t reach the blond – who
was screaming obscenities and appeared to be throwing something into the
air. He’d actually come within inches of the protection that the priest
could offer him, but had never quite made it.
By this time he was panting heavily, and exhaustion seemed to be taking
its toll. Suddenly, he screamed in pain and clutched at his shoulder. His eyes
were screwed tight, and “fuck it hurts,” leaked out of his mouth in a steady
stream between gasping breaths.
“Damn it, Kaiba,
would you do something?” Honda yelled as he shoved past the brunet to go to the
aid of his friend. He was less than a
foot away from Jounouchi and was just reaching out to grasp him by the arm when
the blond finally took notice of him. Jounouchi flailed out with his uninjured
arm, catching the unsuspecting Honda hard under the chin for the second time
that night. The force of the blow set
the brunet hard on his behind. His gaze focused on something up near the
ceiling, Jounouchi then began to yell something about how the Red Eyes’
henchman might be scary looking, but that he was a pansy and then, with a
muttered “oh fuck”, he began dodging something again.
While Jounouchi
was knocking Honda on his ass, Kaiba had made the suggestion to the priest
that, since he was unnecessarily draining energy from him, he could stop trying
to protect Jounouchi for the time being.
He was utterly taken aback when, without any argument whatsoever, the
priest did as he was bid and the brunet was rather annoyed to hear himself
utter a quiet, heartfelt thanks.
Honda rubbed his
jaw, complaining about taking a hit there for the second time that night, and
grousing about how lucky he was that the damn thing wasn’t broken. “What are we
going to do, Kaiba? Look at him,” he said as he stood and backed away from
Jounouchi. “Don’t tell me it doesn’t
bother you see him like that. Just accept that you’re going to be playing host
to the priest, and take the damn thing!” Honda gestured toward the rod.
“Not yet.”
“What do you
mean, not yet? You can’t be serious
about waiting to see if Yugi can get Yami to undo the curse?”
Sighing deeply
and running his fingers through his hair, Kaiba replied that that was exactly
what he was planning to do.
“Fuck you,
Kaiba; if you won’t do it, then maybe I will. How bad can it be?” Honda said as he strode toward the bed.
“He says you’ll
die if you pick it up, Honda.” Honda’s
hand hovered over the golden object. Seto could see the gears turning in the
other’s head and he really hoped that Honda would believe his ruse. At the same time the priest was yelling
furiously in his mind, wanting to know why he would stop the other from helping
his Katebet. ‘That’s easy, Priest. I
doubt he could handle you, and unfortunately, I’ve seen too many instances were
you spirits run wild. Even though you
don’t exist.’
‘I don’t like
you. You’re stubborn and a nuisance.’
‘I’m
heartbroken,’ Kaiba deadpanned.
“That’s what was
written in Pegasus’s journal.” Honda’s musings interrupted the squabbling in
Kaiba’s head. “But, I think it was only for the eye, since nothing happened to
Marik when he used that.” He pointed to the rod, “And, you’re the one who seems
to be its destined keeper.”
‘He’s got you
there! Come on, pick it up, pick it up, I won’t hurt you, I promise,’ the
priest urged.
‘Would you be
quiet? He can’t hear you, and I find you annoying.’ Seto barked.
‘The feeling is
mutual,’ the priest quipped back.
Turning his
attention to Honda, Kaiba replied, “Yes, well, according to Isis, their family
are the caretakers of the golden hunks of junk, and that probably has something
to do with it. Are you willing to risk
your life?”
“Jounouchi would
in a heartbeat, and you know it, Kaiba.”
“Yes, but
Jounouchi is an idiot. He rushes into things without thinking, and often ends
up in a huge mess.”
“You have a
point there. So, what are we going to do? We can’t leave him like that.” Honda
said plaintively, looking over to his friend – who had fallen to the floor and
was now curled up in a ball and rocking back and forth, his arms covering his
head.
“Oh, I don’t
know; I find him rather amusing at the moment.
Oh damn, I was joking you idiot,” Kaiba yelled out loud as he was
slammed with another dizzy spell. He sent
a withering glare Honda’s way at the other’s outburst of laughter and not so
muffled ‘serves you right, dick wad.’ “We need to get him closer to the rod,”
Kaiba said, choosing not to respond to the other brunet.
“OK… Hey, hold
on a sec. If Jounouchi can pick it up, then why can’t I? And another thing; if he can protect
Jounouchi from the rod, then why doesn’t he just fix the curse? Are you two keeping him like this deliberately?”
Honda accused.
Both human and
spirit were outraged at that suggestion. Even though he had joked about it just
moments ago, Kaiba was very disturbed by Jounouchi’s current state of
being. His rationale for waiting for
Yami to reverse the curse was very sound to him, and he was insulted that Honda
would dare to suggest such a thing again after he had already stated his case
to Yugi earlier. But he wasn’t so sure about the priest. He could think of one
very good reason why he wouldn’t free Jounouchi right away. ‘That is a good
question, Priest; why don’t you? Is it
because you want to get out of that thing?’
‘Hn… I have more
honour than that. I tried to break the curse, but it didn’t work. I don’t have
enough strength on my own, I need to channel through a living being, and they
need to be holding the rod when I do.’
‘I don’t believe
you, Priest, I know everything that you’ve been doing, and I’ve not felt you
try to change this.’
‘And you dare
call ~her~ an idiot?’ The priest sneered, ‘Seto dear, what do you think I was
doing when this first happened?’
‘So you can’t even
guarantee that, if I do channel you, you’ll be able to break the curse’ Kaiba
said, admitting for the first time that he might actually do something to help
the blond.
‘Oh I’ll break
it, don’t you worry. And then, once I’ve freed my Katebet, I’ll take care of
the pharaoh.’
‘And it’s talk
like that that is going to keep you locked in there.’
“Kaiba, Kaiba…
damn it, you’re worse than Yugi, zoning out like that all the time.”
“Hn…” was all
Kaiba responded to that. “He says he
tried to fix the curse, but can’t.” Not
really wanting to, but seeing no way out of his earlier lie, he conceded that
yes, Honda probably could pick up the rod without any tragic results “But think
about it for a minute, Honda. Do you really want to?”
“Why not? How
bad could it be?” Honda pondered, his hand reaching out towards the rod once
again.
Seto was
panicked and his mind was racing. Knowing full well that the other could not
control the priest, it was imperative that he stop Honda from picking up the
Millennium rod. Grabbing at the only halfway convincing argument he could come
up with he blurted out, “How would you feel about the priest using your body to
reacquaint himself with his Katebet, never mind the fit that Otogi would throw
if that happened.”
“Oh, I hadn’t
thought of that …”
“And what of
Jounouchi? We don’t even know if he
will welcome the advances of the priest, and if he didn’t, how would you feel
to have your body used to what could amount to rape?”
‘I, um…”
Capitalizing on
Honda’s uncertainty, and ignoring the furious ranting of the priest that he
would never have to force his Katebet, Kaiba cautiously approached the curled
up blond. His hope was to try and lure Jounouchi closer to the bed and back
inside the protective shield of the rod. Unnoticed even as he stood right over
top of the blond, Kaiba reached out with his foot and nudged the other’s hip in
an attempt to get his attention.
Jounouchi’s eyes flew open and Kaiba braced himself for the attack that
he knew would come. He was taken totally
by surprise when Jounouchi jumped to his feet, and with a huge smile plastered
on his face, wrapped Kaiba in a joyous bear hug.
“Blues eyes!
You’re alive! He didn’t get all of you!” he said as he nuzzled his face into
Kaiba’s neck. “I thought you were all
dead, and Seto too.” Panic crept into
his voice.“ He’s not, is he?”
It was nice to
hear concern for his well-being coming from Jounouchi’s mouth instead of the
usual sentiments of the other wanting him to drop dead, and Seto couldn’t help
but pull the blond close in order to comfort him and whisper in his ear, “No
I’m still alive.” As soon as Seto said
those words he tensed up, realizing that it was the priest that Jounouchi was
concerned about, not himself.
“I don’t know
what you said, but he’s still alive, isn’t he?” Pulling away from Seto and looking up into his eyes, Jounouchi
frowned when he saw the guarded, hostile look.
“Is something the matter, Blue Eyes? Is there something you can’t tell
me?” the blond asked. “Will you take me to him?” When Seto nodded, Jounouchi cracked a smile and said, “Great! I
get to fly on you again.” Before Seto
could stop him, Jounouchi had hopped onto his back, and by some miracle,
without knocking them both to the ground.
As Seto regained
his balance, he was annoyed to be assaulted by riotous laughter both inside and
outside of his head.
“I’m glad you
both find this funny, idiots,” he said out loud. To the priest he added, ‘I
thought you said that without your magic, he would see everyone as an enemy?’
‘This is very,
very, curious. I wonder if it has
something to do with your feelings for each other?’
‘Don’t be
ridiculous,’ Seto denied, ignoring the pleasurable shivers running up and down
his spine from the blond pressing into him, not to mention the warm puffs of
breath that tickled his ear. When he
got to the bed and back inside the protective arc of the rod, Jounouchi hopped
off of Seto’s back. His ‘thanks, Blue Eyes’ was cut short when he saw that it
was Kaiba who had carried him and not the dragon.
“Oh? Well,
thanks, I guess,” he said, sounding a bit surlier than he had just seconds
ago. He plopped himself down on the bed
and hugged the rod to his chest. He then babbled on and on to the priest about
how he was so sorry, but the Red Eyes had killed all of his dragons. He went on
to tell him how he had thought that one had escaped, but that it had turned out
only to be Seto’s brother. The endless
prattle continued without allowing anyone to get a word in edgewise. Finally, when he stopped to take a breath,
the priest was able to reassure Jounouchi that all three dragons were fine. He
then explained that he could only protect the blond from the effects of the
curse if he was within a few feet of the rod, and that ~that~ was why he had to
keep it close to him at all times.
“Oh, okay.
Sorry, Seto; I won’t let it out of my grasp again, I promise.”
Seeing that
things had calmed down and that he was no longer needed, Seto quietly slipped
out of the room, allowing a slight grin to curl the corners of his mouth when
Jounouchi blurted out, “That doesn’t mean that you’re allowed to look at me
while I change, though.”
