A/N: Ugh, sorry for the long wait for such a short update. My last day of work is coming soon and it’s almost time for me to head to Florida again, so I’ve been concentrating on that. Plus, my stupid computer decided to crap out on me for a week. I really did want to make this chapter longer, but I lost my train of thought.
------------------------------------------------------
The ride gave Yugi time to think about everything and nothing at the same time. Thoughts buzzed around the edges and flickered briefly to the front before fading back into the constant swirl. All his life he had know that he was not born into his tribe, but he never had reason to think his birth was of some divine miracle from the gods. He never once wondered too deeply to why his identity was kept so secret from anyone not in his clan and was never to tell of his mark. That mark angered him when he was young because the younger girls would tease him about it. Their preferred joke, until he was almost ten, was to flip up his loincloth or tunic in back so they could sneak a peek of it and laugh at his reaction of having his bottom exposed. Recalling the memory was bittersweet.
Yugi thought of his future as well and remembered that kiss from the pharaoh all too well. He quickly stopped thinking about that when he felt his cheeks grow warm. But would the pharaoh really welcome him back after only a day's departure? Yugi had not given him any indications, that he was aware of, that he was more inclined to stay at the palace than back with his tribe, so would this make Atemu appear like a fool for his kind gesture?
He lifted his head as he heard shouting and realized that the other palace guards were announcing their return while they rode through the gates. A feeling of nervous anticipation flowed through his veins and he could not deny that he took a quick survey of their surroundings in hopes of spotting the pharaoh. Unfortunately, he was nowhere to be seen.
Yugi helped Saa and Jahi unload his belongings, sticking close to them in these final moments. Seto sent fresh guards to fetch the supplies and gold as were agreed upon. Yugi helped as much as he could to allow the men to rest before setting off again. The boy tended to the horses too, stroking their snouts and feeding them grain. While he paid attention to the horses, he also said his goodbyes to them as well. Tik-tik, Yugi's favorite because he had named him, whickered gently and chewed at his clothes like he would always do. This time, however, he seemed to understand they would soon part.
A hand upon his shoulder startled him some, but he saw it was Saa. The last of their goods had been gathered and packed and now it was time for the men to return. Fresh tears welled in Yugi's eyes as the pain in his heart from leaving came back. Saa pat the boy's back while Yugi hugged him tightly. Jahi approached and was embraced next. He, however, knelt down so he could hug Yugi back.
Jahi spoke with a tone of sadness, "We shall all miss you, litter runt." He pulled back to grin lightheartedly at the nickname he had often called the boy.
Yugi chuckled sadly between his tears. He sniffled and wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, "I will miss you all as well. Know that I will always keep you in my thoughts."
It was hard seeing the two men leave. Yugi stood identical to how Atemu had watched them riding away. A sob choked in his throat now that everything had sunk in.
"Pharaoh Atemu does not know you have arrived, Yugi," Seto spoke from behind him.
The smaller teen turned and wiped his eyes again.
"I am returning inside the palace to see Jono..." A small smirk appeared on his face, "I believe it would please my cousin if you made an appearance. Our partners long for our presence after all, do they not?"
With a soft blush, Yugi followed behind the priest and into the palace.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Atemu sat upon his throne, brokenhearted. He allowed his priests to deal with any matters that came to him since his mind was elsewhere at the moment. Jono stood near him to offer what comfort he could, but knew it would not take the pain away completely.
A guard appeared and bowed respectfully, "My king, High Priest Seto has returned."
"Thank you.. You are dismissed," he replied half-heartedly and the guard exited.
Jono still felt badly for Atemu, but he was still excited deep down about his lover's arrival. He would have to speak with Seto about planning something to help cheer the pharaoh up.
Again, the doors to the throne room opened, this time with the priest emerging with a cloaked figure following. He bowed to his cousin, but not before casting a glance to his golden haired love.
"It has been done, cousin, just as you commanded. We found their camp and returned Yugi safely. They allowed us to rest before our journey home."
Atemu let his eyes clench shut briefly with sadness, "And you granted their request?"
"Yes, my pharaoh. They requested supplies and gold for their travels...."
The young ruler stood, "Thank you, dear cousin.. I am sure you wish to see Jono now.... I am going to walk through the gardens."
He made to leave, but Seto's voice interrupted him, "I intend to see Jono, yes, but there was a second request made that I also granted."
"I only gave my word for one request, Seto. Why did you go against my direct orders?"
The priest bowed his head, "I informed them as well, but I believe you will be grateful for this second request. They asked me to give something to you and gave their blessings that you should keep it here."
Atemu's curiosity grew as a brow rose, "And what is this gift?"
Seto gave one last bow of his head before turning and calling forth the figure hidden behind him. After removing the hood, Yugi tried to keep his head down humbly, but kept stealing glances to see if the pharaoh would be upset. Atemu was stunned into silence and was vaguely aware that he was descending the throne stairs to reach them.
He stood before the boy, "Yugi?.. You have returned?"
Yugi dropped to his knees and bowed at his feet, "My pharaoh, please do not be angry!"
To everyone's surprise, Atemu dropped down as well to pull the other back to his knees. He held Yugi's chin in his hand lovingly and gazed with confusion into the violet orbs.
"I am not angry in the least, little one.. But why did you not stay with your tribe?"
Seto spoke up, "It was his tribe that convinced me to bring him. He has the mark of the gods upon his body and was found in a holy temple. The gods have taken pity on you, beloved cousin, and have sent you what your heart desires most."
The teen king stood, helping Yugi to his feet as well. Atemu knew well that as High Priest, Seto would be honest in any matters of the gods. Did this mean the gods had really answered his heart's prayers and sent this boy to him? But.. why a male? Atemu's heart did not mind, but a pharaoh was to have a queen that could produce an heir. What plans did the gods have for him if being with Yugi was fated? However, those questions did not have answers since Atemu did not know how Yugi felt in return.
"Cousin, I know you wish to reacquaint yourself with Yugi, as I too wish to reacquaint myself with Jono. Let Yugi accompany you to the gardens. You were headed there, were you not?" Seto had a pleased smile curling the edge of his mouth.
"Y-yes.. Go to Jono, Seto and I will walk with Yugi..."
The smile grew a bit more as the priest bowed and was dismissed to see his lover. Atemu, still focused upon his younger look-alike, bowed his head slightly to the boy and offered his hand.
"It would please me if you were to join me in the palace gardens, Yugi. Will you accept my invitation?"
Yugi's cheeks were aflame once again, but he gave a curt nod and placed his hand timidly into the other's. The pharaoh wanted privacy while he spoke, so he led them to a quiet spot beneath a fig tree. Yugi was still troubled that he went against Atemu's wishes and returned, while Atemu was thinking silently to himself about the dancer. The boy’s shyness kept him from speaking first, so Atemu began instead.
"I did not think I would ever see you again, beautiful one... You do not know how truly happy I am to have you back, Yugi."
"Ph-pharaoh..."
"Seto spoke the truth before, Yugi.. I have long wished for someone to be by my side as I rule, but there has never been anyone that made me feel as whole as I do when I am near you. Even from the first moment I saw you, I at last felt complete and my restless soul was peaceful. You say you do not know of your origins, little one, but perhaps the gods meant it to be so... Yugi, may I see your mark?"
The short-statured youth moved his position so he could do as asked and exposed his birthmark for the pharaoh's inspection. Atemu ran a finger over the edges gently while he studied it. Realization dawned upon him at last and he gave his eternal thanks to the gods for this gift they had bestowed upon him.
"Thank you, precious one.. I have seen enough."
Yugi fixed his clothes before seating himself comfortably again, ".. My pharaoh, why do you smile so?"
Atemu's smile grew warm with his understanding. "Yugi, how well do you know the tales of the gods?"
"Only what I have heard from the elders' stories, pharaoh. What is it that you wish to know?"
"The god, Horus.. As you can see, those that are blessed by the gods are watched by the eye of Horus," he held up the sacred pendant that hung around his neck to point out the eye. "Horus represents the sky. His eyes shine both in the day and at night. When Horus battled with Set, his right eye was gouged out. This is why his right eye is so much weaker, the night, than his left, the day."
Yugi listened and nodded, knowing of the battle. "But what is the cause of your smile, pharaoh? The blinding of a god is not something to smile about."
The taller blinked, then let out a deep chuckle at the childlike innocence. "No, little one, that is not why I am smiling."
"Oh! Forgive me, pharaoh. I did not mean--"
"Do not worry yourself, Yugi. But let me continue... You also know that a pharaoh is known to be descended from Ra. Because of that, the eyes of Horus that watch over us are of his left eye to represent Ra and the day... Your mark, little one, is an eye of Horus as well.. But, you see, it is of his right eye."
Amethyst eyes grew wider as the pieces began coming together for the boy as well.
"It is not coincidence Yugi. Our similar appearances and your mark that directly compliments my symbol.. It is proof that you were sent by the gods."
All of this was a bit much to comprehend for Yugi. He held his head in both hands, feeling as if his head might roll away from all this new information. While he tried to gather his thoughts together, he looked warily at the young ruler.
".. My pharaoh.. Does this mean that I belong to you then?"
Atemu shook his head in a gentle negative, "No, Yugi, it doesn't. That is because I am giving you the choice.. You are now a part of the palace, much like Jono, but you belong to no one. I will not use my power as pharaoh to make you mine. I want you to make the decision on your own."
Yugi's mouth gaped a few times when he tried to form a reply, but a tanned finger hushed him.
"Do you still have the ring I gave you, little one?"
"Yes." He dug into a small satchel that was tucked into the waistband of his tunic wrap to produce the item, "Here, my pharaoh."
The ruby-eyed youth took the golden ring in one hand and Yugi's in the other. With loving care, he slipped the ring onto the boy's delicate finger.
"The decision is yours.. However, from this moment on, I am going to try to woo you in my favor, my precious one. You will be free to roam the palace and may leave into the village whenever your heart desires, you will not be a servant, nor will you be a slave. My only rule is that you will return to me every night to share my bedchambers, but I will not force myself upon you at all. I have merely been alone for so long that I wish to share my bed with someone I love."
"M-m-my pharaoh.. You must surely jest!" Yugi protested.
"You should only address me so when we are not alone. When it is just the two of us, you may call me 'Atemu'."
Yugi flushed brightly with shock. To address a pharaoh so casually?! That was sheer blasphemy! Again, the smallest teen did a remarkable impression of a fish out of water, causing Atemu to smile.
"I hope you are prepared, Yugi. The courting has already begun."
